Ironically, in the '80s, I found a Johan Superbird model kit, built it, and painted it black. Also somewhat ironic, this kit didn't have a vinyl roof. It turned out smooth and shiny just like this one, and I used the rally wheels so it really did look like this car, right down to the decals on the 1/4s.

You’re enthusiasm for winged cars is awesome. Thanks for sharing the stories of the cars. My buddy had a white super bird back in the late 80’s that he bought off a used car lot in Seattle area. 440, 4bbl, AT if I remember right he paid like 7k for it. Which was a lot of money in the 80’s for a 18 year old car. Those were the days

That Plymouth Road Runner Superbird should have come in black with a Grabber hood from the factory in 1970 it could have been a hit in that era and the tick tock tack could have been another option as well but those mods were built after the 70’s as a custom

I was one of the original founders of the Winged Warriors Club in Cerritos California. The president of our club owned a 69 Daytona. It was the most beautiful Winged car I have ever seen. He leaded in the front end so it flowed smoothly back to front, no
rubber weather striping at the nose. Beautiful free flowing silver with black interior. 440 with a cross ram 2 ...4 barrel carb set up. Believe it or not one could eat an egg off the battery without worry he kept it that clean. We also started the Winged Warriors magazine just a few pages . Nothing special. The way Richard Petty became involved I believe( please forgive me if I am wrong, it was a long time ago and my memory is not hitting on all eight cylinders) was through an STP representative. She wrote an article about us.
Very long time ago but this article brought back a lot of memories. If I had only known what the future held
I would have had a garage full of them today. Oh well. We did run down where most of them were and who owned them. Ha no computers, not even beepers.

Mr. Bob Jennings you have an absolutely amazing collection!!! A collection that most anyone would be envious of!!! In reality, most all of us can only dream of owning a stable, with an inventory of the pure thoroughbreds, such as yours!!! This over-the-top “triple black” specimen that you have right here is absolutely INSANE!!! It is just as BEAUTIFUL as it is AWESOME!!! I can’t help but to wonder as to why CD&P never offered these 2 cars in a “triple black” option!!! I have an interesting, or at least I think it is, question for you about the paint. At the 3:45 mark of the video the camera begins to come around the rear of the car on the driver side and then proceeds down towards the driver door while giving us a great shot of the fantastic body work and that elegant and gorgeous black paint. However, something caught my eye!!! As he went down the rear quarter panel where the “BLACK ICE” band logo was once painted. The paint looked somewhat funny, almost wavy and I thought to myself, “hold up, Bob just said that he had a friend who was a great body man go all over the exterior paint and what not and I know that there is absolutely NO WAY that someone left that “BLACK ICE” logo on the side of the car and just painted over it. NO FREAKING WAY!!!”. So, me being me, I rewound the video and played it a few times over at 1/4 speed and it was ONLY then when I realized that what I saw was, in fact, NOT what I originally thought it was. It was, however, the word “PLYMOUTH” that I saw. It was the old stylized “Plymouth” font of that era that was laid down on the rear quarter of this beauty. It is the same “Plymouth” logo that was originally on some of, if not all, the Superbirds. I did not see it anywhere else in the video, nor did I hear you mention anything about that cool feature on this “one-off” beast. But to me, it looks like “ghost” letters, if you will. You know the ones that you can see at a certain angle or when the light is hitting it just right and then at other times, or even at night, they are mostly, if not completely, invisible. Since I just have to know, my interesting question is this… “are you aware of this really cool feature that resides on the rear of this car???” or is it just my mind playing tricks on me and it is something else, all together different, that I am seeing???”. Either way, “ghost” letters or something else, could you provide a little bit more information on this part of the car??? Thanks in advance and thank you for sharing this amazing beauty with us!!!

What a awesome car!! Too bad your don't trailer one or two of your birds north to the Woodward Dream Cruise on Saturday August 20th 2022. We'll over 1.5 million spectators, with approximately 45 thousand vintage, classic, muscle car event. The Cruise is up and down Woodward Avenue, from 9 mile rd to Pontiac and back to 9 mile. All the parking lots along Woodward by now are spoken for, but I'm sure you could find a area on any cross street to un load and set up camp!!! Woodward & 14 mile Duggans Irish pub great place to eat with liquid refreshments. Pro tip, Cruise Woodward on Sunday is still good for die hard stragglers and enthusiasts. Enjoy!! PS: If your looking for a car you haven't seen on years--- you'll find and see it at Dream Cruise.

I was hoping there was a special order black superbird made... my brother and I own the only early 70's Corvette LT1 built in black. We have 20 letters back and forth with GM and the original owner in regards to the black paint.

I was in Portland Oregon in 1988 and saw a Black Superbird for sale at the swap meet. The guy wanted 11,000 for it and I walked right by because that might as well have been 100k to me at the time. Wonder if it’s the same car?🤔

Did this black bird have silver paint on the nose too?

    • @studedude56
      @studedude56 2 года назад

@@bassthis I honestly can’t remember. I remember the primary color being black and I remember the price. Still a lot of money at the time but in retrospect a pittance. And if I would’ve bought it for 11 I would’ve sold it a year later for 15 and thought I made a killing. And then have to live with that. Lol

There used to be a black Superbird in South Texas that every now and then would go out and play with the highway patrol just because he could outrun them I don't know if this is the car or not only saw it once and I only saw it for a couple seconds before it was gone

    #FavoriteCarEver 1970 Plymouth Superbird!
I've built a Revell model of every color Superbird. I've included 3 colors they should have added, plum crazy, panther pink, and lastly black. It engulfs my heart to know I can see all these wonderful machines at this upcoming show. When I was 3 years old I got to ride in a yellow one with a black top but white interior. A friend of my aunts. I've never seen one at a show since 😢😨

Beautiful car, and insane winged car collection! In 1986 I had a chance to buy one for $3000 but my buddies laughed at the nose and huge wing so I gave into peer pressure and bought a 1969 Camaro. Oh how I regret that decision.

Standby...just prior to 9/11 a black superbird popped up on ebay.
I want to say it was an original 6 bbl 4 speed car. There were pics of the car sitting in the banked nascar track and it had a front chin spoiler.
I wanted to buy the car and I think 35 or 36k was the number.
Now it was advertised as having paced Talladega nascar race before and petty had something to do with the car?
I ended up not getting the car and for the life of me I don't know why?
I think I had finally just found the Mr 5 and 50 hemi superbird at the same time as a lot happened just before 9/11.
    Was that car not authentic?

Doug, there are/were a number of clones painted black. There were none that came from the factory black. This is not a clone, it is a real 'Bird. I can't answer for the one you remember though.

The black is awesome. Beautiful! Is "Plymouth" on the quarter panel? Lettering being black it would be hard to see.
