ENLIST IN THE WAR OF THE LANCE
March to war against the Dragon Armies in this adventure for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.
Takhisis the Dragon Queen has returned to the world of Krynn. Across the land, her armies of fanatical draconians wage a brutal war of conquest. As the Dragon Armies march on the unprepared nation of Solamnia, only the defenders of the city of Kalaman stand in their way. But the Dragon Armies want more than just to crush their foes. An ancient evil in the Dragon Queen’s service seeks a magical weapon that could dominate Krynn for all time.
Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen is a tale of conflict and defiance set during the legendary War of the Lance. Create characters from Krynn, the world of the Dragonlance setting, then march them to the front lines of battle against the terrifying Dragon Armies.
Optionally, use the Dragonlance: Warriors of Krynn board game to bring this adventure’s massive battles to your Dungeons & Dragons game.
World at War: Introduces war as a genre of play to fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons.
Dragonlance: Introduces the Dragonlance setting with a focus on the War of the Lance and an overview of what players and DMs need to run adventures during this world spanning conflict.
Heroes of War: Provides character creation rules highlighting core elements of the Dragonlance setting, including the kender race and new backgrounds for the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery magic-users. Also introduces the Lunar Sorcery sorcerer subclass with new spells that bind your character to Krynn's three mystical moons and imbues you with lunar magic.
Villains: Pits heroes against the infamous death knight Lord Soth and his army of draconians.

Dragonlance is what brought me to D&D. I own over 50 of the books. My favorite book series ever.
Could you point me in the direction of these books? I'm currently playing a Devotion paladin of Bahamut who uses a lance (dragon+lance) right now and am interested in the setting
@@crownlexicon5225 I've had most of them for over a decade. I know Barnes and Nobles will have some.
@@crownlexicon5225read the 1st 3 chronicles. and be thankful... margret weis and tracey hickman.. dragons of autumn twilight (book 1), dragons of winter night (book 2), dragons of spring dawning (book 3).. then read all the rest..but start there

Dragonlance has a very rich and unique story. I hope they do it justice.
Well they have Soth working as a dragon highlord fo tahkisis whom he absolutely hated and they didn't get any input from Weis or Hickman....Soooo....My hopes arent high.
I love dragonlance and have a lot of memories with the setting and novels but... I'm worry that WotC do not understand the setting and characters.
If they have magic system that does drain life force of the user like with Raistlin then they've failed.
Definitely not preordering this. Learned my lesson with Spelljammer. Going to wait and see how it is on release.

Yup, but to be honest I'm more excited for the boardgame.
Smart.
i mean hey.. once i got my copy of 5e spelljammer at least the people on ebay that i bought the 2e version from so i can convert them got to make money lol.... i had my game group all hyped to play spelljammer.. got the crap they put out and was like ok yall give me a few weeks to get some real spelljammer shipped in and we will do this lol..so i definatly feel you..
This might be controversial, but original Dragonlance actually was the end of the Old School D&D that the OSR was based on. It enshrined melodramatic characterization, a narrative plot, in-your-face morality plays, and more that made the game completely different from, say, Keep on the Borderlands.
Not controversial. It is True that Dragonlance marks the end of Old School play. After it, most adventures became railroads preocupied with telling a story rather than making interesting sandboxes. Case and point: Almost every 2e module.
@@JohnCavalcante.Oficial I just got hte 5e version onf Isle of dread and was thinking how awsome that must have been to play back in the day. Exploration and random tables. more or less do what you want

I’m one of the longtime fans of Dragonlance - read the Chronicles in the mid-‘80s, and it’s my favorite old school D&D setting. I’m VERY excited for this book to come out. I hope it does the series justice - we’ve been waiting a long time for 5e Dragonlance!!
Could you point me in the direction of these chronicles?
I’ve also loved Dragonlance since the 80s, though I recognize certain aspects of the setting haven’t aged well. Put me in the cautiously-optimistic category for this one.
@@crownlexicon5225 Chronicles are the first core trilogy also known as the Annotated Chronicles, It is Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, Dragons of Spring Dawning. They then went back and made inbetween books known as Dragons of the Dwarven Depths, Dragons of Highlord Skies, Dragons of the Hourglass Mage.
They are all fantastic reads. Enjoy!

"Massive campiagn" - well, only levels 1-10 (again 😞 ), fingers crossed that means we're getting follow on adventures for the higher level parts of the war, but I'm not hopeful.
That's why I'm waiting for this before I run a 5e campaign for my group. I can easily add my own content to the campaign, there's tons of lore to pull from.
Don't forget to bring the Eloquence Bard, Oath of the Vengeance Paladin, Twilight Cleric, Divination Wizard, and Moon Druid.
I got into DragonLance in the mid 80s when I was 10 yrs old, and i’ve never stopped loving it. I’ve read my 200+ books multiple times!
I am cautiously optimistic for this. I feel as though a lot of the people behind this have simply read an article about the history of dragonlance as opposed to reading the books and loving them.
I mean that’s basically what they did for Spelljammer so I wouldn’t be at all surprised.
Rings of power comes to mind
@@adamkartchner3772 Yeah, Spelljammer is exactly what has me worried about Dragonlance. 😐
I already see an issue, just from the time point of the campaign, this isn't a few years later, this is year 2. Which means there is a big problem with a core race and it's compatibility with the setting. Dragonborn. If they had chosen a bit of time after previous events, then they could rebrand dragonborn as Free Draconians. But Year 2.... yikes.
If it gets them into the books, great. TTRPGs is still a valid way to find Dragonlance.
Them: "It is D&D's setting for war"
Birthright: Uh what?
(Lists off story elements that were covered in about a paragraph of DL1 back in the day) - "Okay, now we don't want to overwhelm everyone with all this lore..."
Dude, we could handle it fine as a cold open to the module back when I was 14, I'm pretty sure folks today won't be overwhelmed. I'm now worried that there's going to be a hundred pages of extraneous fluff padding out the book because WOTC doesn't trust people today to be able to say "the gods withdrew from the world, got it." I got news for you folks, the current generation are smarter and more genre aware than we were way back when, they'll handle it fine.
I'm not into Dragonlance at all, and I still don't understand what's different from Forgotten Realms, or what else is special about it.
I read dragonlance books from 1999 til now and only got into dnd in the last year. So excited for this!
Such hype! I’m very excited for my copy to arrive at my game store!
This will be my first D&D experience/purchase ever. I am here because of Dragonlance and the wonderful setting created by Margret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
The more WotC tries to revive old campaign settings the more I'm disappointed in their business model. I don't get the feeling they are going to invest the time into the campaign setting, one book and move onto the next. Rebooting an existing storyline instead of moving forward.
Krynn: We call it "The Catalysme"
Toril (Sword Coast): We call it , "a Tuesday"
Torril never saw anything like what happened to Krynn. Sure, Torril had it's upheavals with Gods mucking up magic but nothing that changed the actual geography. Krynn had a cateclysm that destroyed two continents, burying most of its landmass underwater, destroyed all of its ruling nations, leaving anarchy, famine, and continental war for 300 years.
Torril is the exact opposite, sure it has its wars, but they are small and nothing lasting and it usually ends with some 20+ level heroes winning the day before the war even gets started. The nations and politics never change on Torril.
Torril is a much more static setting, making it a lot more appealing to run games in. Krynn changes every 20 years or so, forcing DMs to keep up with it's history in other parts of the world.
The only thing that Toril had, that even compares to the Cataclysm, was the Gods being banished to Toril.....and that isn't even close.

I think calling Dragonlance a "war focused setting" is a bit misguided. It does often use war as a backdrop, but the hallmark of Dragonlance is that really introduced larger scope storytelling to D&D. I think it would be cool to embrace and celebrate that element of Dragonlance, since it has honestly become a hallmark of D&D as a whole, which we have Dragonlance to thank.
war of the lance, war of chaos, war of the dragonlords, war of souls.
""war focused setting" is a bit misguided"
LOL ok
@@docdirtymrclean3610 Compared to a setting like Birthright, Dragonlance has never been about the characters participating in a war.
Correct, but I also think that framing this as a war setting does a good job at weeding out the players who just wanna play their cross-breed owlin-lizardfolk bard who just wants to pet dogs and sing songs. A great character for something more setting-agnostic, but Dragonlance demands a level of buy-in regarding the spirit of the setting and I do think that marketing this as a grittier war setting is a smart tactic to those ends.
Hopefuly they add stuff about dragons people was hopping to get in Fizban's.
This new ravenloft book is going to take place in an area of ravenloft we briefly mentioned but haven't really seen before, and it won't be Strahd or Castle Ravenloft, its different..... who thought this was a good idea for Dragonlance as a pitch????
Descent into Avernus was a massive campaign that embroiled the characters in the largest conflict in dnd history - The Blood War.
The adventure's DM advice suggests it's suicidal to fight devils and demons in the blood war, so try to guide characters away from trying ... perhaps Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen provides similar opportunities.
I read Dragonlance in the 80s, the first two Trilogies and I have the first 12 adventures. How will they reconcile Dragonborn or Tieflings to this setting. Or even Half Orcs, when there are no orcs on Krynn.
The author's won't even know that stuff they'll never mention it
That's actually not that hard to address. Just RP a character from Toril or somewhere else who's been magically transported to Krynn against their will and is trying to get home or reconcile with having to live in a new world.
Another book that I'll buy and maybe manage to steal a couple of elements from and nothing else, but I love my collection of barely touched D&D books

As a lifelong DL fan I fully expect WoTC to go the way Amazon did with RoP from a lore standpoint. Both companies want new players/new content-users....requiring everyone to know the lore about any of these properties is asking too much (in their estimation). For that reason you get comments like this, that the new DL campaign is "baseline D&D", meaning they allow any class/race. If that bothers DMs running this (me, eventually), this is why session 0's are so important so we can set the ground rules for what race/classes are a no-go. For example, I know they mention "clerics" in the video but as someone who understands the setting and lore, especially during this time period of Krynn, by no means would I allow a cleric to be played. That's sorta one of the huges premises of the War of the Lance...the reintroduction of clerics/divine magic. What I do like - from what I've seen so far - is that they are spotlighing other events during the WotL.
I would be inclined to allow clerics but no spells or divinity until the old gods are rediscovered. So basically just a less powerful fighter worshiping a false god, like the seeker priests.
DragonLance was what hooked me from being a passive player, to a DM that also buys books!
Currently playing in the adventure as an Aurak Draconian Sorcerer. I was the only one in the group who was aware of the Dragonlance setting before (I hid it so well what with my small collection of books, Raistlin Majere as my discord icon, and my Goldmoon body pillow) thus the DM was comfy not having to do an introduction bit with me like the others. Other than that, we have only really done two sessions so far, so let's see how the world handles him.
Official Dragonrider class / subclass? Lots of that art makes me hopeful...
I highly doubt there will be one considering we haven’t seen a hint of playtest material
Unlikely, since despite the name there was very little actual riding of dragons with Dragonlances in the setting.
We did not get one in the playtest of Krynn material so it likely would only show up as enemy stat blocks not a player option.
Interesting. I was thinking about a homebrew campaign in Solamnia using vanilla DnD 5e myself, and now this
Dragonlance Chronicles were what brought me to D&D
I really wish it had a dedicated campaign setting book
The 3.5 books are still very useful, although all the character and monster descriptions need to be adjusted.
Is there any art of the Heroes of the Lance in the new book? (Specially Tanis, Kit, Raistlin and Laurana)
Hope they make more than one book cause I have to go back to 2e to do my ravenloft game cause the curse of strahd isn't long enough for my party right now they doing Vienna reborn.
All I can say is, I sincerely hope that they allow you to play the adventure.
As I own darn near the entire DL campaign modules, I know that the original series pretty much forced you to play in sequence and follow the storyline in order to complete the campaign. You couldn't go off script. Which soured the game for myself snd my players.
I'll check it out, when it is released. May get it just for completeness, if nothing else.
✌
I didn't like the way the original modules railroaded players and basically required the pre-generated characters, so I crafted my own games to occasionally intersect with the primary story. It worked out fairly well.
Please don’t mess this up like you did Spelljammer.
Still suggest reading the books! Or listen to some cool Dragonlance podcasts, such as Echoes of Krynn as an example.
**** Will we have access to the new Classes through DND Beyond character creation on 22 November???
When will the german version come out ?
Can't wait to play
Nice, I am reading the first book and I like this setup. Experiening it from the onset.
The magic system for Dragonlance has to have a life draining factor of the user like to Raistlin if not then I will have to homebrew that.
I don’t know anything about Dragonlance, but I haven’t messed with war since Heroes of Battle in 3.5! I’m excited!
Will this book be compatible with the forthcoming D&D One system?
They said One D&D will be compatible with all previously released 5e books.
From what we've seen of what they're planning. probably not
They said it would be compatible with future systems, but I'm pretty sure that's just a marketing ploy to keep people buying current books already being produced. It will be close enough you can fake it, but I doubt it will be as simple as opening a current book but playing with the newest rules.
They'll probably hodge-podge together a conversion system, but its probably you could do yourself.
So don't let that hold you back if you want the book, just don't count on what comes out of the marketing department to be accurate.
WotC: Yes
Actual answer: No
This just sounds like what tyranny of dragons could have been. Should have been.
Rumours were that it was indeed meant to be, but for a last minute legal change to not pay the OG creators :(
I hope D&D continue to bring out Dragonlance Books, following the Shadow of the Dragon Queen 👑.
So this is important, as a DM does the book address certain race limitations from the lore, or is their an elegant way to allow all races. Say someone wants to play a Draagonborn... How do we approach this, as it seems you are starting at Year 2, so ... I guess you are not giving redefined Dragonborn as Draconians. Which was my guess until just now. And I 100% know that DMs and players will encounter issues with this.
My favorite is dark sun. And not sure if I would by a 5th Ed or one dnd book of it cause of past changed
Too me Dragonlance was the setting where the very gods themselves played chess, pushing their armies, their adventurers and their nations around the board vying for ultimate control. And it had Kender.
Oh gods no, Kender...
Doesn't explain what Dragon Lance is or where it came from.
Why don't they do world books any more?
so this is before the original trilogy? or concurrent?
I am curious if this is set during the time of the "One True God"...
Funny… I was just starting g to homebrew a dndwarsetting… So this will be interesting.
Wait why is the video titled "everything you need to know" about what you need to order to get it and this is titled "everything you need to play" and is actually about what you need to know?
sounds like the first Dragonlance book series
Dragonlance is more about the dramatic side of things more so than war I would say.
Don't know anything about this setting. Heard people talk about it, but never read the books or played this during the peak. Hopefully it is better that Spelljammer for those that enjoy this setting.
So this is set just before Hero's of the Lance?
This feels like _Tyranny of Dragons 2.0_
The War of the Lance itself predates Tyranny of Dragons so there's that.
So whats the difference between Draconians and Dragonborn exactly-
Almost all the types Draconians have wings to glide save for one. Different Draconians have different abilities instead of breath weapons. Their most unique ability is when they die, a certain type of Draconian may turn to stone, turn to a pool of acid, or straight up explode.
Draconians come from earlier editions of D&D. There are only 5 types and they were created from the corrupted eggs of metallic dragons (because they were idiots and gave them over to the followers of Takhisis/Tiamat). They have tails and wings, too. They also have some magical effect once they die (exploding, dissolving into acid, turning to stone, etc) depending on their type (which can be found in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons and presumably this book).
Dragonborn are relatively new in the history of D&D. They have 15ish types (Gem, Metallic, Chromatic), get breath weapons instead of tails/wings, don't explode when they die, and have a variety of different origin stories. Some Dragonborn were created from the blood of Io (the original Dragon God, who was split into Tiamat and Bahamut during the Dawn War), some used to be humans or other mortals that Bahamut transformed into Dragonborn, and some just hatched from any dragons eggs due to some magical mutation long ago.
one is really cool and full of flavor
the other is a character option.
@@levithompson478 they didn't GIVE the eggs to Takhisis, she stole them and demanded the Metallic Dragons not to fight in the war to ensure they wouldn't be harmed.
@@orangexlightning And they were idiots for believing that the followers of the GODDESS OF EVIL would keep their word.

Wish it was higher levels😪
Hope they do a better job than with the Spelljammer book.
It’s like eragon. But deadlier
Didn't get the story, is it just "the rise of tiamat" but in dragonlance setting?
If you're not familiar with Dragonlance, the answer is no. I think part of the problem is that rather than remaking the original War of the Lance storyline, they're instead making a new adventure set in the same timeframe.
There are similarities, but there are a LOT of differences that would take a while to explain to someone unfamiliar with the setting, which would be clearer if they just followed the original campaign instead essentially making a spinoff of it.
Gimme gimme gimme
Dragonlance has movies??
They had 1 animated feature of Dragons of Autumn Twilight. It wasn't terrible. It had some big names doing the voice acting. It wasn't great either.
Films?!

Not really. There have been a couple of lackluster animated films that really just left you wanting more or disappointed.
@@tonyneal910 Thanks. I appreciate it.
👍
I have high hopes for this one based on what I've seen so far, but realize I've been disappointed before...
I read the original books and played the original modules back in the mid 80's, but after DL14 dropped, honestly the rest of the first edition releases were... uneven in quality at best. The Dragonlance Adventures hardcover was disappointing and limiting in a lot of ways. DL15 and DL16 had moments, but felt like a blender more than anything... and the less said about the later SAGA system the better...
Same sort of goes for the novels, the first six books (chronicles / legends) were excellent - then it was hit or miss as novels were farmed out to other authors to complete the various series with my finally putting the whole series aside after Hederick the Theocrat - with the worst usage of deus ex machina I've ever seen, and sadly Dragons of Summer Flame was the final nail in the coffin... it just felt too much like an unnecessary reboot...
Glad it’s not the Chronicles again, I was a bit worried when I found out it’s the War of the Lance.
Anyone else getting Red Hand of Doom vibes?
Having had a chance to read the book, I have noticed that Wizards did something without realizing that makes Dragonlance THE MOST CONSEQUENTIAL D&D SETTING IN THE MULTIVERSE!!! In particular, It fails to specify the Krynn Pantheon as being distinct from the Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk Pantheons despite the similarities of some of the Deities...If anything, it goes out of its way to specifically state that Takhisis IS Tiamat and Paladine IS Bahamut...Those of you Familiar with the War of the Souls Trilogy can already see where I am going with this...
For those that aren't...Spoiler Warning for Dragons of a Vanished Moon (2002).
The last book of the War of the Souls ends with Paladine giving up his Godhood to take away the Godhood of Takhisis, maintaining Balance in Krynn's Cosmology. Takhisis is then promptly killed and Paladine wanders Krynn is his remaining life as a Mortal all during about 3.5 edition D&D...So by the wording used in Shadow of the Dragon Queen, Dragonlance is where Tiamat DIES and Bahamut chooses to spend his remaining days...technically meaning "Rise of Tiamat" and "Horde of the Dragon Queen" suddenly lack an antagonist too come to think of it...
...If only they gave the responsibility for the book to someone who actually knew the setting...
Pre war of the lance.
"Films"..? Shouldn't that be "film", only one, the animated Dragons of Autumn Twilight....? Or is there another film that I've missed?
There was only the animated one you mentioned

\The biggest war in d&d history...... I think world of Greyhawk has that honor for the last 4 decades......
It's funny how they want to bank on established names and settings with tons of lore and nostalgia value but not assume players know all about them already.
The original books that were printed nearly 30 years ago that is more than enough time to assume half your player base is not familiar with it. Especially since there have not been source books for in in DnD in nearly as long.
Wait so can Dragonborn and Draconins both exist
Nope, also no tieflings,no half-orcs,no drows, no halfling, no warlocks, no clerics, magic can kill you and is only for wizards. Also if you are high level the gods will kill you. Also knights of solamnia can only be humans or half-elfs.
@@sonic064 well your wrong about the classes cause he says in the video that all classes are playable but wow that a few races that I like to play just gone
@@NovelVanguard They changed some things lore to incorporate modern classes, other lore things are just straight up being ignored. Lorewise Clerics aren't "supposed" to be around at the start of the war because of the cataclysm, and there was a specific point that they return during the war.
Halflings do have a substitute in the form of Kender, which are similar but have their own share of quirks. Orcs and the others don't exist but if you have a DM willing to bend rules you could play one of those races with the excuse of multiverse travel.
Explaining these things would be clearer if this was a remake of the original campaign/novels instead of a spinoff that's not quite following lore perfectly.
There was a specific event early in the campaign that allowed clerics to be brought in, and non arcane magic to become accessible, but prior to it, only arcane magic was accessible. But since this isn't following the classic adventure and seemingly takes place before it, not every class "should" be playable or at least, have magic. If that makes sense.
Estoy leyendo La Reina de la Oscuridad 😈
Lord Soth is the goat
That is all
Will Dragonborn be a playable race? They step on the toes that Draconians do, so what would they be in that world?
There are a LOT of 5e races that won’t be canonically playable in dragonlance. It’s all low fantasy, so aaracockra and genasi and changelings and all that are definitely out. I would imagine a DM who wants loyalty to the setting won’t allow Dragonborn, or honestly most newer fantasy races.
Or your DM doesn’t give a damn and you can play whatever, but to me that feels like it would cheapen the experience of the setting, which is the only reason I’m interested in this book in the first place.
Est solarus oth mithas

Is this the one D&D setting that has one of the most infamously ridiculous opening settings, wherein a town is being beseiged by zombie hordes and for some reason the town guard is dead-set on arresting the PCs on some incomparably minor charge?
No undead hordes in the opening, but there are definitely corrupt guards trying to arrest PCs for minor offenses
After spelljammer I’m not excited
