  • Solar panels as we know them are about to change. There has been a lot of talk about perovskite solar cells which will make solar more efficient and cheaper. What are they exactly, why is it important and when can we expect to see perovskite solar panels in action? In this video, Tanya will explore perovskite solar cells, their advantages and downsides.
Perovskites are defined by their structure. They are named after calcium titanium oxide (CaTiO₃) but are often made from different elements. Perovskite solar cell fabrication is easier than manufacturing of traditional solar cells and you don’t need extremely high temperatures for it. Besides, perovskite cells show an efficiency of up to 30%. The main downside of perovskite solar cells is instability: cells degrade quickly when exposed to elements, oxygen and sunlight.
So far, perovskite tandem solar cells show the most promise and deliver the best production. Several companies are involved in research. Hanwha Q CELLS, a German/Korean brand, set a 30% efficiency record in lab conditions for tandem perovskite solar cells in 2023. Still, there are many challenges to overcome and it’s going to be a while before we see perovskite solar panels for sale.
About A1 SolarStore: A1 SolarStore is a North American online store of solar equipment with the largest chain of fulfillment centers in the U.S. It was founded in 2018 in Miami, Florida by Alexey Kruglov and Sergey Fedorov. A1 SolarStore participates in RE+ events to cooperate and stay in touch with the leaders of the American solar industry on a regular basis. The company partnered with Solar Energy International (SEI), a non-profit organization from Colorado that educates and trains students, alumni and end-users of solar energy. A1 SolarStore Magazine and RUclips channel teach about the basics of solar energy and the impact that it brings.
