BUT WHY GENO? A History of Smash Bros Predictions

- With just a few spots remaining in the Fighters Pass 2 closing out the DLC of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Geno fans are as vocal as ever in voicing their support... but why DO so many people want a one-time character from a Mario spin-off to join Smash Bros? What does this puppet with no game appearances in 25 years have that makes him so important next to the other major fan requests like Crash, Sora and Waluigi? In this retrospective, I take a look at who Geno is, why he became popular, and when he started to be proposed as a candidate for Smash that would start to top the DLC popularity polls. This case runs a lot deeper than people being nostalgic for Super Mario RPG - there's actually a pretty unique reason dating all the way back to Brawl that wouldn't be obvious to players who started with Smash 4 and Ultimate!
Do you want Geno in Smash Ultimate, or do you think he doesn't deserve one of the four remaining places? I may be a Geno fan, but it's totally understandable why people just wouldn't get the appeal. All I want to do with this video is tell the story of how the trend started, something I've not been able to find in any of the other Geno videos on RUclips. Update: Well RIP, Sephiroth brought a pretty quick end to Geno's chances and the Mii Gunner costume has returned. But that's not too bad, Sephiroth is a marvellous addition to the game and I will absolutely take the Mii costume over no Geno at all. A deluxe costume with a Forest Maze track would've been ideal, but I can now play Geno in some form and this video still works as evidence of why the demand was there to begin with!

Minor correction: Snake actually wasn't seen as a hint to cloud being in smash because the original Metal Gear series was on NES before MGS existed

Nope Metal Gear first came out in a computer system before it came to the NES, and if you dont believe me, here's the link below:

He's saying the character should've been a hint because Snake hadn't been on a Nintendo system before which wasn't true.
@@baddragonite In regards though, Hideo Kojima considers the nes metal gear games as non canon. The original for the msx2 computer, and the sequel that he made, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake (Snake's revenge was an unofficial sequel according to him since he had nothing to do with it.) are considered official in the timeline.

15:55 I'm pretty sure Geno's Smash Tag profile icon had been in the base game for almost two years at this point. It wasn't a new thing when Min Min was added, it was already there from the beginning.
Honestly while I wouldn’t mind seeing Geno as a fighter, he looks neat and has some potential, I doubt it happens.
So far the only points for him are
1)Popular online fan request
2)Ultimate has so far included pretty much all the most highly demanded characters (Ridley, Banjo, K.Rool)
3)Sakurai considered him in the past
But the points against are
1)Tired argument, but yeah, a supporting character in one game from decades ago
2)Square Enix seem to be the most picky company on their characters, you really think they’d want to promote Geno over their other stuff?
3)Since DLC character choices were Nintendo picked, how high are the chances of a character like Geno? They’d likely be more interested in choices that are relevant to modern audiences or at least stuff that gets huge nostalgic kicks. I don’t think Geno captures that as much as some believe.
4)Mario had a dlc fighter join, yes Pirahna Plant wasn’t a fighters pass character but I doubt they give a single franchise two dlc spots
5)Even if they did, Nintendo would probably choose Paper Mario as the RPG Mario rep, or maybe Fawful or some other Mario and Luigi character as a little homage/send off to the recently closed studio.
Geno is possible but the chances of it happening are not so high I think, especially since despite the fan demand, a lot of it can be seen as less genuine, more like a meme people pretend to be serious about.

Square already promoted their biggest japan franchise: Dragon Quest and showed no issue handing over Geno's rights not once but twice.
@@nuibaba280 Still we are talking about a company that has been very picky about Smash thus far and while it’s easy to believe fan demand is enough, keep in mind that Geno’s fan demand is largely online and a huge chunk of it is meme-like (again how many people demanding him have ever played Mario RPG?) so I don’t know if Nintendo would put him that high on the priority list, let alone put him at all, remember Sakurai said all dlc were choices Nintendo made for him, he would just go with the ones he most favored. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but there’s a lot going against him. I think he’d be fun, but I’m not holding my breath for him.

Never played Mario RPG myself, so I personally don't have any strong feelings of my own about Geno. I would however love to see him get in just so this can be the game that finally collects all the "Impossible" characters. We got Ridley. We got K Rool. We got Banjo/Kazooie. All we need now is Geno.

Uh.... not sure why you say all the Smash 5 newcomers are impossible? They all seem very likely from the start of their own series, and none of them really help Geno's chance in the end. And if you mean there are more possible characters, wouldn't people complain that NIntendo didn't go with them?
Just regarding to Geno only, if you say he is impossible cause his is a minor character, in his series Mario games we had lots of minor characters like Goombario, Peasley, Lubba etc. If you mean Smash bros should fulfill all kinds of impossible possibilities, why only Geno counts but other characters don't? Not sure if I didn't get your point.
@@Doracake I mean they are all characters that have been viewed by a lot of people as impossible. Ridley had been rejected by Sakurai several times because he was too big. King K Rool hadn't appeared in a game in over a decade and was seemingly being phased out of the Donkey Kong series. Banjo/Kazooie are owned by Microsoft, a direct competitor of Nintendo. And Geno is a one off character from a 25 year old game, plus Square's ownership complicates things. While all have been popular choices for Smash for a long time, a lot of people didn't think there was really a chance for them to get in.

My point is that these characters are not directly relevant when it comes to roster competition, so saying that the newcomers directly relates to Geno's chance is farfetching.
It's like you and your classmate both failed the final exam. She passed the makeup exam doesn't automatically garuntee that you can do it too, because every single student need to study on their own. Only your own study matters to your test score, not others study.
That is applicable to the Smash fighter competition. Every single canddiates only works hard on their own to compete for the roster slot. They don't rely on another character's chance to get in. Even worse, other characters could just be their obstacles and rivals to compete for the rare chances. Such as Geno lost to Rosalina and Plant Piranha when Mario series was giving new fighters, they're not here to give Geno chances but rather managed to take the chance away from Geno.
If we really want Geno to suceed, the only best way is to give him everything he needs, like owning a new franchise or get some new stories like other fighters did. I think that would make better sense for you to compare him to other fighters.

Geno is probably the most bandwagon character with little merits the Smash die-hards have pushed to date. He has even less relevance/importance than Banjo & Kazooie, Dark Samus and King K. Rool! He is a one-off side character that had one major appearance in a spin-off game 24 years ago. I've played SMRPG and I loved the game a lot, Geno's pretty neat I guess, but I just don't get the Geno hype... I doubt I ever will...

@@m0j026 you can still represent that in his moveset, make him have really powerful moves but then he gets over his head, for example he could use a powerful kick that would send another player flying but then slip to the ground so if the attack misses he slips to the ground and lets over players get to him

That's a fact and it pisses me off that anyone just dismisses it as a small game that isn't important.
It was big enough to warrant a console themed after it.
And he wasn't just a mid-boss in the Olympus Coliseum (as many mid-bosses in the game only appear once and that's it), he also came with his own friend card, and with some of these added to your deck, he brought two really iconic moves with him: "Cross Slash" and "Omnislash"...
Don't these sound familiar to someone who knows Cloud only via Smash Ultimate...
I've had a fair few comments about this, I did add an on-screen caption about the Kingdom Hearts appearance while the FF Explorers footage was on screen, it's just subtle. This game definitely happened, speculation people just wrote it off as not having a Final Fantasy game on Nintendo (or at least a much lesser status than the games Snake and Sonic had in their own right on Nintendo), plus the existing restrictions behind Kingdom Hearts that still lead some to question Sora's chances today. I do think it's interesting that even Sakurai mentions that Cloud "had now" appeared on Nintendo during his presentation
After Cloud was revealed for Smash 4, they should've ported FF7 to 3DS. That would've been so cool, and perfect for the platform.

Cloud Strife was in Kingdom Hearts chain of memories for the Game Boy Advance published in 2004.
I don’t want Geno in Smash but I learn something new today with this video. I remember that some ppl were salty when Cloud was revealed as a fighter since that supposed killed Geno changes. But now that characters like Steve and Banjo are here, literally any video game character is possible
It be awesome if Geno was revealed that his trailer included Cloud and Mario in it, to represent SMRPG fusion of FF and Nintendo.
Also Pokemon trainer should have proven that generic avatars were possible. He is not Red or Ash, just a generic Pokemon trainer.
But I just someone who got into Smash speculation in the Smash 4 days, so what do I know.
I'm glad you enjoyed learning about the story! I'm certainly not here to make people want Geno, but I think knowing the context helps. Really good point on the Pokémon Trainer, I think it was just the similarity with Ash and Red that helped, all while playing as Charizard and friends directly. There's no doubt that the community was wrong about Hero (the unpopular in the west claim was also thrown around a lot), but I enjoy seeing how many of their own rules they bent while starting these trends

@@Doracake Square Enix, who made Final Fantasy (Cloud's series) also made Super Mario RPG, which Geno is from. I think the comment itself briefly explains this.

@@TaleOfTheToaster The problem would be for the character would be the same Square Enix, because if they gave him the availability to add another character it would be one from another of their franchise, not from a game from more than 20 years ago because they would see it as a waste, the The only way for Geno to be playable characters would be if Sakurai requested them.

Excellent video. My only concern is with the "Geno icon" being added recently. I'm pretty sure that it has been in the game from release because it's my icon and I haven't changed it from the beginning until now.
The arguments against Cloud and the Hero were always dumb. Cloud was part of a franchise that was a staple of Nintendo during the SNES days. 7 is still part of Final Fantasy. Hero being a nameless avatar was never a problem because Link, Red are barely different in that regard. And it was foolish to think Geno would be more likely than either of them when all of them are owned by Square. People forget that people are in charge of these companies, and they don't care about arbitrary rules like "has to be in a nintendo game" or "who has an official name." They will go for what is the financially beneficial.
Someone like Cloud being in Smash is more lucrative for both companies because Cloud can bring in an entire demo of people who don't play Smash while Smash fans would be interested in trying out Final Fantasy 7 and its later remake. That's actually the advantage of not having a large Nintendo legacy. You can create one.
The real reason Cloud was not considered an option was due to the fractured relationship between Nintendo and Square. You’re probably aware of the huge FF7 debacle, but simply put, Cloud stood in defiance of the very idea of Nintendo consoles, and was pretty much the poster boy of Nintendo’s and Square’s hatred of each other, especially since unlike Sonic there was no sign of any bonds being repaired. In short, Cloud was considered impossible because outside of his inclusion the two companies were at war with each other, and since then Final Fantasy has had much better Nintendo representation.
I’m with you on Hero though. There were templates for each of the protagonists, and Enix has a much better relationship with Nintendo, so him getting in was a no-brainer, and I’m honestly surprised it didn’t happen in Smash 4 or the base Ultimate game.

@@TheAbsol7448 It’s mainly because Geno getting into Smash is more likely and realistic than SMRPG getting a remake. And you could use that argument against Banjo by saying Banjo and Kazooie should have gotten a remake before becoming a fighter.
@@Masked_Mastermind While that's true, he's at _least_ the main character of his game, has multiple games, and got a physical rerelease recently. And he's solely owned by Microsoft, where Geno is owned by a company that only cares about their more relevant franchises.
When it comes to Geno in Smash Bros. the answer really does vary from person to person, and there are a number of reasons why he can or should be playable, even if nowadays he's a fairly obscure figure compared to, say, Steve from Minecraft. It's fair to say that, unless you played the game or are familiar with RPGs in general, you probably only know about Geno because of the following he has when it comes to Smash Bros. speculation. And really, it's surreal to think that a character who only appeared in one game (and cameoed in another) who isn't even the main character of that game (though is still one of the main playable characters of that game) could have the following he does.
Speaking only for myself, I feel like the fact that people have wanted him for so long and that there continues to be that possibility of Geno appearing as a playable character in the game that Nintendo and Masahiro Sakurai should just include him already. I know people who have wanted him since Melee, and back in those days it wasn't THAT much of a stretch to want him back then, since Super Mario RPG was still fairly recent, but the fact that he's still part of the conversation even 24 years after the fact is what's so impressive to me (and baffling to others).
Of course, that's not to say it WILL happen, that still hangs in the balance. But for what it's worth, I'd be happy to see him included.
But why him? Why do he deserve being in smash more than waluigi or paper mario? Why have him when we can have other cooler caracthers?

@@almadeoliveira2890 he has a cool story (but I understand you haven't played the game). He's a Star Warrior (Luma) that lived on Star Road before it was destroyed by Exor. He's mad his home got destroyed and he can't grant people's wishes anymore so he decides to follow Mario, go inside the most powerful doll Gaz the young Toad has and boom he joins the crew and beats up bad guys. Also fake fans *only* want Geno in Smash and they clearly only join because of popularity, the real goal is to just get him back in games period, stuff like Paper Mario, a new Mario RPG, maybe even a platformer but as long as Geno the Star man, Mallow the prince of clouds and Boshi the edgy Yoshi with sunglasses come back
As much as I wouldn't mind Geno, well...I do think people are going a little too crazy with their self-made hype over him. Like with a lot of characters. Deep down, though, I do feel like there are more unique, diverse, and interesting picks out there than some old one-time Mario character - hell even among Mario characters, I feel that some like Paper Mario or King Boo would stand out more.
I'd pick Mario&Luigi as an Ice Climbers style duo over him. It'd be way more interesting mechanically.

He only popular because he was in a mario game. If he was in another game that didn't have mario name on the title nobody wouldn't care.
That's the problem tho. Many Nintendo characters have bigger fanbase, which can explain why Geno lost to others in the end. After all Smash bros isn't really a popularity contest.
Just Geno hasn't appeared in any new Mario game by his popularity so we don't know if popularity really helps.

Super Mario RPG was an absolutely enchanting game for lil kid me, and Geno had a quality and presence that defined the magical experience of the entire game in one character.
Geno wasn't just 'cool' or 'cute', they were magical, emotionally complex, and with a visual presence that was strong enough to eclipse even that of Mario Bowser and Peach. By design, this character seemed intended to be the focus of obsession, Geno was in my childhood dreams as I'm sure as was with many others.
Mario RPG specifically was the first time a Mario Universe was made real, and it added depth and charm specifically to the now absolute icons Mario, Peach, and Bowser. The sprite work and dialogue in game was extremely expressive, especially within the context of this world they had created
the whole package created a deeper connection to these characters than possible before.
to go from a mario world made real with Geno, to likely over a hundred Mario games without Geno, at this point feels almost surreal. To see Mario, Peach, and Bowser in each Smash game they're in continue the legacy I truly believe started in Mario RPG, and to become more and more wonderfully realized, it is kinda sad that their friend from the stars hasn't been able to join them at all this whole time.
great video! you make a great case why it's taken as long as it has as well as why so many people have rallied around the character.
The problem is that NIntendo now seem to ignore the characters and settings intorduced in Mario RPGs, so that they just don't want to bring Mario's partners from those games into a new story. I agree that it's sad to see Geno as well as Goombella, Plum and some other old pals to return in more games.
Geno would definitely be a great pick for all the fans that have wanted him for so long. I've personally got my fingers crossed for Rex and Pyra or anyone else from Xenoblade 2, if characters from Fire Emblem Three Houses and ARMS can get in, I think it would be such a let down to see Xenoblade 2 not get the same treatment.
I like Pyra but, Xenoblade did get a rep so I don't think it'd had been an issue if NIntendo tried to push a new franchsie instead. Smash is more about franchises after all.
Geno’s too obscure. Nintendo would never pick him as a fighter, regardless of how vocal his fans are. There are way more recognizable Mario reps they can pick from. They put Piranha Plant before Geno.

2009 I made it clear I was such a big nerd for smash to all my friends. Surely my profile picture and name alone can tell you how big.
I had a friend who was such a big nerd for the Dragon Quest series. Mainly playing it on his DS at the time one time suggested. "Hey, imagine if they add Dragon Quest to Smash bros."
I merely scoffed at him, telling him that trash ass game with no following would ever be in Smash.
I owe him an apology and likely he's got his boasting prepped for when I see him again.
I remember watching the Adamzone fan trailer on Steve in Smash Bros and thinking that it was just some pipe dream that’d never happen, then he became a popular request in Ultimate, then I got happy when he was revealed, I then also learned that Steve was considered for Smash 4 DLC which really made me happy because Smash 4 was when I started playing Smash Bros, so overall never lose sight of your Smash Bros dreams, even if they’re unlikely
Tbh there are better, new franchises that could be represented in smash. Rather than another Mario character (Yes, Geno is a Mario character just as Luigi, Peach, etc)

I didn't know most of what is said in the video, and I still think that he doesn't deserve to be in. He does represent the evolution of the smash fan base and the evolution of character speculation... Still, he only appeared in an RPG Mario Game from over 20 years ago, and Mario already has a lot of fighters, and realistically speaking, Waluigi, Captain Toad and Paper Mario specifically have higher chances on joining the roster. Also we already have Cloud and Hero from Square Enix, and I think that's all that we will get from Square for a while, both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest being two really big franchises, I don't think they will add Geno because he is not known for the majority of gamers, he is only popular in the smash community, and he doesn't serves as publicity to a game like Byleth and Min Min did.
This is only my opinion, don't hate me :).
I think the point is at this point he matters more to the fanbase than actual video games. Tho It'd be nice for NIntendo to do fanservice sometimes, just within popular and demanded characters there are still many competitors. In the end Smash is more about popular video games than satisfying the fanbase.
To me, it'd be nice for Geno to get into some new games that end up being topselling so that boost his fame to gaming.

Isn't Banjo the leading rep of his own series? i don't think he is the proper case for either Geno or Waluigi. Their current issue is more about how to be picked when NIntendo is deciding a new Mario fighter.

As well as covering the impact the character , and SMRPG, had on the world of Mario (and the future games to be inspired from it like Paper Mario). Yeah about his chances for this fighters pass.
I want to see him in the game solely due to how hype it would make a lot of people. Whether I personally wanted the fighter or not, I can admit that watching trailer reactions to fan favorites has always made me happy and feel everyone's sense of joy and passion through the screen.

Besides Geno is already frequently absent from other recent games. If Nintendo do want to treat fans they should also make Geno appear more frequently.
What I'm most hype about is that based on how the DLC fighters have been designed, Geno wouldn't just be a basic character. He'd incorporate mechanics from Mario RPG, like possibly Timed Hits, and the ABXY menu.
If Waluigi never made the cut after all these years, I just feel that Geno will be even harder to make it. Perhaps if they were to develop aNOTHER Mario RPG, it would then be likely that Geno could be announced to promote the new RPG game.

I had always wondered this myself. I think there are several more deserving characters for Smash, so I don’t really want him in. However, he should get into the game as a deluxe Mii fighter costume.
I'd honestly prefer waaaaay more characters over him, that have had more significant importance Like Zero, Shantae, or Doomguy (Which is now a possibility Thanks to Bayonetta.) as only a few examples. I just think, he doesn't bring much to the table. He's uninteresting to me and didn't play much of a role in SMRPG. You could've left him out and the game could've ended the same way. I'm sorry if I'm just hating to hate, but I'm just trying to say what's on my mind. I know alot of people were mad about Bylethe and Steve in Smash, but I was fine with both. (Less Steve, but still)

Geno I have been rooting for since yes pre brawl. I remember seeing an animation of an overly cocky Geno telling nintendo why he is so "bodaciously awesome" for brawl...pretty sure a thing with Bowser's Kingdom. A very old youtube sprite animation that introduced a sad mockery of mallow which was sadly accurate and yes an extremely overpowered, overly cocky Geno prepared to nuke everything at a moments notice. So OLD youtube. Days of youtube poops spamming people with going after the cdi games. Now I root for him as I actually think his moveset from the 1st Mario RPG would be freaking AMAZING for smash. Not just his old special moves (with either Geno Flash as final smash, or geno whirl due to it doing 9999 damage when done right) but his various weapon equips. Arm cannon, double punch, star gun, and others. (Also shame on you for not bringing up that both Mario and Luigi games AND Paper Mario branched from this game even though you brought up the cameo) He's just set right out the gate!
I would also personally vote for either Mallow or Smithy to come with him. Mallow to complete the original 5 party members, or Smithy...because smithy. Guy is a beast and weapon obsessed. Both are solid smash choices.
And while I am sad to surrender, I'm shelfing my desire for Waluigi to be upgraded along with Ghirahim as the only thing to remain constant is assist trophies haven't been upgraded in the same game they started as assist trophies even though they both DEFINITELY have enough to work with for solid movesets. (Waluigi would be a great Wii Fit Trainer Echo. Don't deny it. Dance of Destruction in Waluigi Pinball please) Also Demise even though Ganondorf is very unrepresented compared to Zelda and Link who both have at bare minimum 2 characters. But hope is still high for Mr. Sandman or King Hippo from Punch Out as a surprise.

My problem with this point is that, weren't they already absent from all Mario's adventures in other games? Mario has other partners and friends in other games and other fans can claim the same thing and nominate different characters instead.
I feel like you should complain that why Mallow and Geno didn't accompoany Mario in more new adventures, like Odyssey and 3D World? It's not like Smash bros is the only place they should gather together.
As someone who honestly thought geno was a dumb pick for smash I always questioned why people wanted him too although this doesn’t make me want him it does make me feel like he wouldn’t be a bad choice either
While I have no issues if he does get announced... I honestly dont want in. Not because I dislike him or anything, but because... Mario is single handedly the most represented series in smash, it really doesnt need another character. And given the general emphasis on adding new series into the roster (minus byleth) Geno just feels boring to me. Yet another mario character compared to a completely new franchise just doesnt bring me any hype (and before anyone asks, this is how I felt about Byleth. I was cool with it, but still felt it didnt need to happen, even if the music is 10/10)
If Geno makes it in it's purley for the smash online community that knows he exists and has history with the community among the years, in a way Geno would be more a smash character than his original mario rpg character at this point, a character who embodies the original premise smash showed of video game toys coming to life and fighting ironic

When you see Nintendo’s current attitude towards original Mario RPG characters, you can lose hope for Geno to be on the roster. Nintendo even has mandates against having distinct Toad characters, so to believe that they’d incorporate an entire character that goes against their current mindset on the roster of their greatest crossover is beyond ludicrous
Sure, but NIntendo's attitude isn't correct as well. If they want to make more Mario RPGs then they should pay enough respect to the original characters, or just send Daisy and Toad to next Mario RPG and make them the main partners instead.

I really enjoyed watching this video! I'm always going back and forth on whether I'm more hopeful for Sora or Geno to get in, and I think seeing this has me rooting for the puppet again. I woulda also like to point out that Geno as an online player icon has always been there, even being spotted in the final Direct before the game's release, so there's no need to worry about that affecting his chances.

Hmmm honestly I'm skeptical about Geno being in Smash. Sure thanks to the history I can see why people thought Geno has potential to be in Smash. When you think about it..that'll mean he'll have to beat out characters like Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, and of course my requested Square Enix pic. 2b from Nier Automata. I'm just saying he may have a chance but it's a very slim chance to me. But if somehow this puppet made it into Smash..I'll apologize on this comment.
I don't think its about chance, it's more about whether he has what it takes if he is in. Just he'd be a new Mario series fighter, he wouldn't compete against other new series reps as they're never in the same qualification.

I assume the point is partnership of the companies. Like even if HALO isn't on Nintendo Switch, it can still be invited as long as Microsoft participates in Smash.
I wouldn't be surprised if Geno ends up being the last DLC fighter, and to be honest as much as I wouldn't want him in smash I would definitely understand why and would respect it.

Not a fan of geno. Reminds me of digimon, I’m all about Sora for smash personally from square. but only if they give us kairi/riku/axel/Mickey/Donald/goofy, or something of that mixture, or even organization 13 to an existent. If not paper mario 100% because game and watch is the only 2d character this far, i love the idea I don’t know why they didn’t capitalize on the recent released game. But whatever good video. The problem with these DLC characters is that the MOST exciting part of new characters what’s meeting new milestones to fight against them for them to join the roster. THAT was the magic. The “new challenger approaches” screen was such an adrenaline rush before I realized the internet would provide a way to unlock them as opposed to blindly playing and getting them that way.
I feel the need to add that smrpg’s plot heavily relies on Genos role. It’s HIS journey to fix the star road. If anything, Mario is assisting Geno. So yeah I think people downplay Geno by saying he’s a side character with no significant importance

It's objectively correct to say the current main cast including Toad, Luigi and Rosalina are more important than Geno. If you don't like this fact, you should try to change it by adding him to the main cast, right?
Ive always disagreed with the demand for Geno, hes not really an impact character in gaming history. Even within super mario rpg there are a few other characters than can he kind of competes with. I feel like its just a loud minority wanting his inclusion. I think hes place as a mii costume of smash 4 was perfect, especially with mii gunner customizable moves. If we were getting more square enix content, I'd like to see Laura Croft or another gaming icon that represents different genres.
Imo this pass should only consider :
Crash - the third biggest platformer franchise after mario/sonic. With activision content too like Tracer, Captain Price, Spryo, diablo mii costumes and some wow sc2 spirits. Crash would be a good inclusion of a simple character that new smash players can understand instead of like gimmicky dlc characters.
Master Chief: FPS representation, he has a lot of diverse source material and in the more recent games, emotions which most fps characters lack. His new games halo 4/5 are rated T instead of M. However his movesets seems hard to put into a 2D fighter, but he has a lot of source material. With a sgt johnson, and arbiter mii costume.
Mishimas- tekken. The last big fgc game that should be crossover into smash, which can bring many tekken fans into smash and stick with it (unlike casuals). The character could be like hero with Heihachi/Jin/Kazuya/ and maybe Kazumi. With their mishima fighting style, they have plenty of source material to implement. I know sakurai said in smash 4 it would be difficult- but he went back on Ridley and Villager. Also bandai works on smash ult so it would be cool. If they go just the Heihachi route with a young/old version, it will make a villian on the character pass too.
Lastly I think Laura Croft would be a good fit, having one of the og girls of gaming in smash, the only issue is that its owned by square enix europe so SE japan is known to be resistant on putting their ips in other games. but it would be cool to represent 3rd person action games that are coming back with the late end of ps4 and early ps5. I think Laura would be the best rep of the genre over like Nathan Drake (series ended), Leon / Jill (2 capcom reps already), altair/ezio (mii costume, and hard to make low violence, inconsistent popularity in japan, and rayman is prob ubis rep)
I don't know why, but even before all the smash stuff, Geno was always very memorable for me. He looked cool, had powerful abilities, and even a memorable name. So the first time I saw someone proposing him for smash, I instantly latched on to the idea. Despite never even owning a super Nintendo nor even coming close to finishing the game.
If not for these shit rules, Alucard should've had the spots of the Belmonts. He's the most popular CV rep in the community anyways... Belmonts are iconic, sure. But Alucard would've been better. He got shafted in his convo in the Kid Icarus stage pretty hard.

Personally i don't think Geno would be a great pick. I feel he would get the same reception as Terry did. Most of the playerbase will have no clue who he is while a chunk of certain people will. Besides the kids that like to meme and jump on the Geno bandwagon without experiencing who he is, many other kids playing the game would just be confused and upset that this random puppet got in over their favourite characters
Well this was a high quality, very interesting video. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it, and it does make good sense now why he is so popular. I never have played Super Mario RPG, but I might give it a shot eventually, even if I've never been too hot on Final Fantasy. I really like his design and I think he has a good lot of unique traits from the little I've seen of the game, and hey, if we got Banjo Kazooie, maybe the December (?) reveal will be Nintendo's Merry Christmas gift for those awaiting for decades, it'd be great for them, and I am sure they'd make a fun fighter, which is all that matters, unless it's Megaman Zero -I really want more Megaman rep Tale. I believe I haven't noted anything else regarding the reasons on why so many people want Geno. Guess I was too distracted at the claim at 15:55 that Geno's Smash Tag profile icon had been added with Min Min's release even though it's been there for over two years and known about it since November 1st 2018.
Anyway, it's kinda funny to see now that most people wanted Geno in the Brawl days because they wanted a Square-Enix rep, believing that Final Fantasy would be impossible because the most iconic FF hero, Cloud Strife, was more connected to the PlayStation, and believing that Dragon Quest would be impossible because there's NO iconic enough DQ hero in the west; they unanimously agreed that Geno would make the most sense considering he's from a Square-made Nintendo game, which they assumed was the safest bet.
However, that whole argument kinda falls flat nowadays, considering we now have BOTH Cloud, AND _four_ Dragon Quest Heroes. If Geno was supposed to be a stand-in for either, then he'd be completely obsolete, as Square-Enix's most popular franchises are already in Smash for real. What's the point of adding a relatively obscure puppet character as the SE stand-in if you already got way more iconic SE heroes like Cloud or Erdrick in the game?
So the next logical assumption for why so many people want Geno is that they want a character representing Mario's RPG games - much like people want Waluigi to represent many other Mario spinoff games. Geno may not be THE main protagonist, but Min Min's inclusion proves that, as long as you're popular, you don't need to be the game's main mascot to get in Smash.
However, the problem here is that Geno has made only a single game appearance in 1996 - and a single small cameo since. The Super Mario series - which the Mario RPG games fall under - is one of Nintendo's most successful franchises for over 35 years, with hundreds of games, spinoffs and other appearances. Someone like Paper Mario, which has his own, still running RPG series for almost 20 years since 2001, would make more sense as a Mario RPG representative.
With shaky reasonings such as these, I believe that many people want Geno in Smash nowadays simply because _they want Geno in Smash._ Over the years, people have been demanding for the puppet to join the duke-out for so long and so often that aforementioned setbacks like Cloud already being in the game don't matter to them anymore. Geno has gained growing popularity out of archaic fan rules that have already been broken, and that popularity is now the most likely reason why Geno could pop up in Smash some day. Maybe not in Ultimate, but maybe in a much later game.
But frankly, it's very possible that Sakurai doesn't see the point in adding Geno anymore. Yes, back in the Brawl days, Sakurai said he'd loved to add in Geno some day because he has a gun arm. That point is kinda obsolete when Smash 4 added Mega Man, AND the customizable Mii Gunner, both of them wielding a gun arm and being about Geno's size. There's also that way more wellknown Square-Enix characters have been added nowadays: the aforementioned Cloud and DW heroes, but now also Sephiroth. Sakurai has also changed his mind on certain occasions: back in the Brawl days, he noted that Animal Crossing characters were too peaceful to be in a fighting game, but nowadays we have TWO Animal Crossing fighters. Ridley's size has been a major factor why this Metroid antagonist haven't been made playable, but Sakurai managed to make it work without sacrificing too much of his character, appearance or prowess. It is very possible that Sakurai could've changed his mind on Geno, too.

Cannot say it's false. Smash bros is indeed more about NIntendo history, so that if Nintendo did put Geno becasue of that, this is technically not a wrong decision.
But at the end of day Geno is competing against all other Mario characters for a Mario series rep title, so other Square Enix characters don't have too much to do with Geno. Even if Nintendo have a good partnership with Square, that still doesn't ensure that Geno's obstacle would be easily removed.

Min Min is the franchise lead rep of ARMS, Geno isn't. The fact Mario series already chose Mario, Bowser and Luigi in previous Smash already proves that Geno isn't NIntendo's prior pick for Mario series. That should be the point. If Geno cannot be in the same level with Mario and Luigi, he basically has no garuntee to be in Smash.

You already mention Min Min and you know that the original directors have more power in the roster than Sakurai himself. Even if Sakurai doesn't care about Geno, the Mario series producer Miyamoto and other directors can command him to add him if they do think Geno is necessary for Smash. Shouldn't the actual issue be that Miyamoto himself never said he also likes Geno?

Smash is about franchise crossover, not focusing on different games from the same franchise. Why shouldn't we use the effort to take care of more unused series like Rhythm Heaven and Golden Sun?
Then Mario is already the titular protagonsits of all these games. Shoudln't he himself be consdiered the rep of all the games? If people don't agree with this then every single game has to nominate a fighter in a Smash roster.
Besides as I said above, game origin diversity can be a point but it should be applied to Mario's own games first. Like, Mario Kart rosters should include several Mario RPG characters by this logic.
This video really changed my perspective on Geno support. In a way, Geno serves the same role as he did in his game. He's a symbol. A symbol that if enough people wish hard enough for some, then maybe, just maybe, that's enough to make it happen.

And problem should be that we cannot play Geno often in most games like how we usually play Toad, Yoshi and Daisy in Mario Kart, Mario Party, Super Mario Bros etc. If Geno can just go appear in more different games, we don't have to only play Super Mario RPG to know him. Fun video. I know I'm 2 years late but I do have some points I'd like to bring up.
1:there was also a poll before brawl was released held by Sakurai specifically for the first 100 or so people to write in. Geno only got a total of 4 votes but that's still 2nd place if I remember correctly.
2:ironically geno may have been competing with megaman seeing as the reason Sakurai wanted to add geno in brawl was his gun arm. So megaman and the mii gunner itself may be partially responsible for geno's absence.
3:The third parties in smash 4 were generally big requests. Obviously megaman and sonic were massive additions but pacman was also a rather large request. He just didn't garner massive reactions because we all knew he was coming.
4:Sakurai does have certain official rules when it comes to adding third parties. One of which being they should probably have been on a Nintendo platform at one point. That one was never a hard "they have to" but rather it'd make things easier. Ironically cloud was one of the easiest characters Sakurai ever had to get according to him.
5:chrom was the FE protag that was speculated the most because of the gematsu leak and not because of the protag rule(frankly I've never heard of that rule until this video). The gematsu leak was technically correct in that chrom was going to be playable in smash 4 when they said that but Sakurai changed his mind on chrom later.
6:Hero genuinely was impossible for a long time. The ownership of Dragon Quest is split between 3 companies(4 at the time of brawl and 4). Sakurai didn't even try to get hero until ultimate because of the possible legal hurdles.
7:this one is obvious now but comparing sora's ownership to Disney to an anime character getting into smash is pretty ridiculous. Disney is a company that want to make money and sora being put into smash is a surefire way of making money.
Speaking as someone who doesn't like geno (wether you're talking smash or his original game) this video was very well made.
All really good points, and yeah idk if the avatar protagonists thing was ever considered a "rule", but more just not considered as a possibility. Pokémon Trainer should've been a fairly immediate red flag, but Chrom if I recall correctly was also revealed for Fire Emblem Awakening long before Robin was ever showcased, so he had the feeling of the protagonist before the game even released

As much as I like SMRPG, Geno is in no way ever coming to smash ultimate.
Square Enix already has 3 reps, the geno mii costume's return, the profile icon are already deconfirmation flags. Not to mention a side character who isn't even the main character of his only ingame appearance that doesn't show up unti near the end of the 2nd primary boss fight has as much chance as goku at this point.
Well he is a side character, so what if he becomes a main character? I think fans should focus on that point first.
Geno makes sense as a Mario RPG rep, because he is literally the invisible force of the stars fighting to get things back on track, the real question is his stage would it be Forest Maze or Star Hill.

@@billychilly4740 For a character that has been requested for the longest time and made progress in Smash 4 by becoming a Mii Costume somehow became extremely low priority within the Smash Team. With the Mii Costume people were confident that Geno had a great chance in the next game, yet when they could only pick a handful of newcomer for Ultimate a Piranha Plant had way more priority than Geno, and all he became was a png spirit. Then in the first Fighters Pass that was gonna be the last thing added into Smash Bros and still didn't have enough of a priority to get included. Now we're two characters in and we got Steve who reportedly was in negotiations before Smash 4 was even over, we see where priority lies and no one cares enough to go and negotiate with Square for a long period of time to get Geno. At this point everyone who wants Geno is already buying the Fighters Pass so they don't need to appeal to them, instead they want to bring in new people and strength the IPs they already own like ARMS and Fire Emblem. All Geno has is fan request and the Smash Team has been slowing down on those types of characters to a point where they don't have any desire to continue adding more. Every single Mii Costume has been coming back and Geno is gonna follow suit just like the others.
And before you respond negotiating the rights to use a character as a Spirit or Mii Costume is less work when compare to negotiating to use the character as a playable fighter.

Probably because of timing of it and just reasonable logic. Square Enix just got ANOTHER DLC representative when they already had one in the form of the DQ HERO. Not only did we get Sephiroth with only 3 slots left, but we also got a Geno costume at the same reveal. A lot of people take that as Nintendo just outright confirming that Geno was considered but dropped for Sephiroth. Look at it this way, they went out of their way to kill the Geno hype for the game. Why would they do that if they were still going to use him?Unless this is an ultra omega bait on Nintendo's part then he's mostly likely not gonna be in Season Pass 2. MAYBE if they do a 3rd one but I still doubt it.
I have also played the game and didn't resonate with Geno that much either. I wouldn't hate almost any character they could decide to include and my hope is that they do them justice.

Also, if, supposedly, Geno _is_ planned to be a future DLC character, they would most preferably be releasing that costume _with_ him, or not at all, instead of having it be released before him. I mean, that's what I would do if I was Sakurai. Coupled with what was said.... alas, with this costume, Geno's chances for this game are now _severely_ dimished, if not straight up gone for good.

Uh..... Geno is from Mario series so why would he have to fight against other Square franchise characters? Isn't his opponent supposed to be like Rosalina and Captain Toad?
Also we're not thinking about DLC cause Mario just does'nt need more contents via DLC. If Geno indeed becomes a fighter, he'd definitely be in the base game.

Nostalgia aside, I seriously hope that Geno eventually makes it into the roster with this 2nd Fighter Pass. Generally for a few reasons:
1. It helped pave the way for the following Mario RPGs. Timed Hits in particular were practically a staple of those games, for both offense and defense. If part of the appeal for new fighters is to create interesting move-sets, I think this would be a good addition because it could push players to master the timing to get the most out of him, like Geno Whirl being his side B and pressing B again at the perfect time would deal high knockback.
2. Maybe he wasn't there from the start of the game, but I wouldn't say Geno is a "side character" in the sense of no relevance to the story. He's supposed to be a spirit from Star Road sent to take down Smithy and informs Mario and Mallow of just how dire it is that Star Road is torn apart. His existence and the existence of Star Road only added to the world feeling lived-in and gave the player an end goal for the game: taking down Smithy and his army. Sure, he's only in one game, but Min Min's only been in ARMS, Ice Climbers have only had one game in their main series, Kid Icarus only had three games that were several years apart(the original, Of Myths and Monsters and Uprising), not to mention Dark Pit getting in as a separate character/Echo Fighter for Smash 4 or Ultimate when he was only in one game, and Sheik's only been in Ocarina of Time for a main series Zelda game(I know she could represent the Sheikah tribe as a whole, which has been a staple for Zelda's universe, but why not just go with Impa then?).
3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this the first Mario game to have an overarching story? Going with what I said in Point 1, you could argue it helped pave the way for the early Paper Mario games with the overarching plots involving seven Star Spirits/Crystal Stars, especially considering that point that Paper Mario 64 was originally going to be Super Mario RPG 2.

4. I just really want to see him in because I'm so tired of seeing fans/trolls/griefers "flex" on those that want Geno in the game. Pretty much the first thing I saw after the announcements of Banjo & Kazooie/Hero and Steve was memes or other posts making fun of the fact that Geno still wasn't in the game outside of a spirit or an icon. I'd just find it really satisfying for those jerk-ass comments to age like milk. If other "impossible" characters got into the base game or as DLC("too big" Ridley, "irrelevant" King K. Rool, Banjo & Kazooie basically being dead as a franchise), I don't see why others are saying Geno has basically no chance of getting in.
This is the most stupidest post I read? Mario games always had plots before a dumb one time RPG. It did not pave the way for more mario RPG games. All three mario RPG series are made by different developers. Most people never play mario RPG due to it being released during the tail end of the snes lifecycle. Geno is and will always be a one time side character that only popular cause he was in a mario game.

@@aaronjones6299 I think the point is that Geno should had appeared in more Mario RPGs to prove that he still matters to Mario series? If he cannot keep a recurring roles, he'd end up being surpassed by other newly introduced main cast like BowserJr and Toadette. Saying that he was originally planned isn't really helpful.

Why are you grouping Sora with Goku!? Goku is a tv show character! There were rumors that Disney wouldn't let Sora in, but that certainly isn't confirmed, and Sora is a beloved VIDEO GAME character by many people owned by Square Enix.
