@@Doracake Sometimes being added to Smash revitalizes the franchises. Like after Mac's inclusion as an Assist Trophy in Brawl we got Punch-Out for Wii, and after his inclusion in Brawl Pit finally got a new game with Uprising.

finally got around to playing SMRPG last week, finished last night. geno confirmed badass.
With the way Sakurai is knocking down character requests left and right, it'll be extremely surprising if Geno isn't in the game especially considering he's one of the most requested by far.
especially with the possibility of dlc so he basically gets two chances to be in the game.
That and sakurai wants him in smash bros

I first played SMRPG in 2010 on the Wii, and like you, I was blown away. I had no idea how much lore and world building the Mario series could have and it was tons of fun to play!

Having played Super Mario RPG, I really see why people hope for this little guy now. So many reasons:
1) He has an interesting color palette and design.
2) He was interesting in his original game, a real glass cannon with lots of situational abilities.
3) His story is that of a TOY come to LIFE, not only perfect for a fighter built on this premise, but a great amiibo tie-in!
4) He's a poster child for major game crossovers. Lots of people have spent time trying to figure out whether he's more a Nintendo or Square character, because he's the best of both.
5) He's a character based on unlikely wishes coming true. The perfect underdog, and his staying power has been insane.

This is honestly the best Geno video out there. While I love the speculation videos, this video took the time to break down exactly why the hype is there as well as mention the overall reason as to why it feels more likely. I rarely like videos on RUclips, and I'm clearly a fan of Geno, but this was a very well done video and I hope to revel in the excitement or, begrudgingly, huddle in the defeat of what we'll know in the coming months,

Pretty high and a lot of the people above him are already in.

Another cool fact is that Super Mario RPG also had a plush set in Japan, and they could only be obtained through UFO catchers (crane machines). It featured Mario, Boshi, a mushroom, a star, and there have only been 2 sales of a Mallow plush which is possibly a prototype plush. These have become some of the rarest and most mysterious pieces of video game merchandise ever, to the point where there's hardly any images of the toys, and sales for them barely happen (and usually when they do, they get sold for over thousands of dollars). What makes it even more interesting is that there's a rumored GENO plush in the set which might be so rare that there's no documentation of it, or pictures. It could even be a prototype just like Mallow.

As someone who didn't grow up with Mario RPG, but did play it twice much later I have to agree that Geno would be an amazing addition to the roster.
They could really give him an interesting timing-based moveset (like he has in his battles in Mario RPG) and an unique / interesting final smash.
The fact that we got Geno's costume in Smash 4 makes me think that he has a damn good chance this time. A lot of Mii costumes are playable characters now...
The problem should be that Mallow and Geno were only one-time character and now are totally out of existence. If they could keep appearances in more games, they would not just be old fans childhood memories that most people don't know well while others like Yoshi, Toad and Daisy can just keep getting more attentions. There are tons of chances but Nintendo never give even one to them.
Also Mallow would totally get in instead of Geno, he's the first party member you get and he actually has an arc instead of just piggyback from the rest of the plot. Heck Bowser and arguably Peach have an arc unlike Geno.

I'm younger, so I didn't discover Mario RPG until I heard that "Rawest Forest" song on RUclips. I bought it and fell in love with it. Been a Geno supporter ever since.

I went into this video as a person who has never played this game, knew nothing about Geno and honestly completely apathetic. Ending it, Geno is my number 1 pick going forward.

I don't think that's a correct thought. The problem is more that they only stick to one game so of course common people don't know them as much as Toad or Yoshi. Nintendo should be the one that helps them, not us.

Honestly, it's up to Square at this point. We don't know how much they are willing to support Smash Ultimate, thus we only got two songs from FF7.

34 Castlevania songs, yeah. Konami I guess is cooperative, which is a first. I'm happy enough we got Cloud, as impossible as it seemed, but having only 2 songs was kinda lame. At this point I'm sure Square could figure something out with Geno, given Sakurai's relationship with other third party reps. Geno is from a Mario spinoff, I'm SURE they could at least negotiate Geno somehow
Antonio Hernandez plus they don’t really get advertisement through Geno, as they don’t use him. Wish they would just give him back to Nintendo. If we get Geno, we could likely get someone else too from square so they also get advertisement. Who knows. Maybe Sakurai can work his magic

The reason people are so love struck for Geno is because SMEPG was fkn legend status. Listening to the soundtrack gives me the goosebumps and it’s been literally decades since I played the game.
By your logic, The Great Gatsby shouldn’t have been a movie because it’s “from some old book that nobody remembers” There are things in this world that come together and is simply a masterpiece. SMRPG is one of those things.
I feel like Geno is gonna be the next newcomer. And you know what? I'd be totally cool with that.

I remember back in the brawl hype days there was a beef between the Chrono and Geno fanbases. For Ultimate the Chrono fanbase is basically dead.

true! yup spaced on mentioning it. that was a big thing when we found it out... i think after the mii costume i sorta forgot that bit of info cause it used to be THE thing pointing to sakurai acknowledging geno but now we have so much more we now know for a fact sakurai knows fans want geno and he does too
This is not entirely true; the actual orchestral music piece we all know is a fan mockup. The translation is "Forest Mushrooms", and is believed to be the theme for Toadwood Forest from Partners in Time; it would've been used for the underground version of Mushroomy Kingdom.
If it was real, it wouldn't be some obscure piece of trivia everyone seems to forget about.
There's also something about the way it was positioned among the music (chronologically) which would lead us to believe it's a Partners in Time track.
Hopeful Me: I would love for Geno to be in the game.

I have a feeling that Geno will finally be in Smash Bros. In, a recent Famitsu magizne interview, Sakuri said that the Smash Ballot was a huge factor for finally adding King K. Rool to Ultimate's roster. Take the fact that Sakuri has stated that he wanted to have Geno in Smash all the way back during Brawl's development and that He, along with Ridely and K. Rool where the 3 most wanted newcommer during Melee. It seems the stars are finally aligned in Geno's favor.
That basically means he will get in I'm super confident with that

I love this video bro it takes me back i like the story and how you told it in the beginning because it reminds me of how i experienced it back then too. I was a huge mario fan, and what this game did for the lore, world building, and character development in the mario franchise as a whole is incredible. Also, lets not forget that its music was fantastic and had many hours of gameplay like back then this game took me longer to play beat and explore than any other mario game that was out at the time. Great vid bro! Heres hoping we can one day see a new Mario RPG. If you have seen Dragon quest and how amazing there games have been lately I would love that Square team to work on a Mario RPG sequel with Nintendo! Dragon Quest 11 switch is amazing imagine those devs made Mario RPG 2?
I come from the future. Past Papa, do not loose hope. There will be trying times ahead, and it would be all too easy to discount him. But have faith. One day, our boy will appear out of the Forest Maze, and show everyone he was MEANT to be in Smash.

18:40 I kinda wonder now. We know Sakurai said he wanted to add Geno in Brawl. But did he want Geno because HE wanted him, or because the FANS wanted him? Probably a little bit of both, but still that’s pretty cool. I really liked this video. You have a lot of knowledge on Nintendo’s history. You should do more of these with different characters/games (if you can of course), whether it’s for smash bros or not.
id think both, sakurai was a young gamer (while being a young game designer) during that era... honestly its one of the reasons HES the guy who thought to make a game with all the nintendo characters together...hes a fan! i feel like the older game designers never totally "got" why smash is so popular despite the idea of putting all the game characters together seeming so obviously "cool" to fans
I think it's both. Sakurai has stated he thinks Geno fits really well in Smash Bros so there's at least some personal desire there

are you sure it was Sakurai who thought of the idea of including Nintendo characters? I know for a fact that Smash Bros started out as a concept fighting game but when pitched to the Nintendo executives, nobody found it attractive enough to make it a fully fledged game until someone suggested including iconic Nintendo characters to set it apart.
Not sure if that someone was Sakurai, but if so, that's awesome. It takes a gamer to know how to make a great game. Thanks Sakurai, and also thanks Iwata (still remember him!).
Our_illumination I believe the story was, that Sakurai wanted to add Nintendo characters but kept that part quiet till he had a proper prototype he could show off
I think it's more Nintendo's attitude issue how they respond to fan request tho, since they are the ones to make Geno not returning in all Mario games so far. Sakurai is also kinda part of the fans as long as he is not in charge of Mario games.

I've heard this about the "naming of the characters in code" before and i
dont think it debunks it. it assumes a lot. it assumes pretty much the
same amount that needs to be assumed to believe the leak of course (in
other words theres assumptions on both fronts). it assumes the "smash
ultimate is a port" style of thinking, and the names of characters in
the code have to be the way they were in the past since they were ported
over. i'll admit its odd to change the way they name characters but we
simply dont know if they have been changed or not and with a very large
roster of characters they may have wanted a more japanese friendly
naming system to keep track of them all. theres nothing proving they
couldnt name them that way. as for richter without simon argument or
gothitelle being "too ridiculous" both those arguments are really more
opinion. again we really dont know enough, richter could be in the code
without simon and sakurai could pick gothitelle as an easy echo. im
standing strong with the leak unless something really solid comes out
and debunks it. but make your own assessment of course.
Nothing can be debunked until the game is released and even then, there's still the possibility of DLC characters. I agree with PapaGeno however, Gothitelle as an echo makes sense from a development point of view, but it does not make sense as a representative of the Pokemon series.
This is how I feel about wanting Isaac in smash
isaac fans, banjo fans, k rool fans (got theirs!). they are a special kind of character request where theres more riding on sakurai hearing the fan demand than just not being able to play as them in smash...
I cosplayed as Geno at a convention a couple of years ago, and while not a ton of people recognized me, the ones who did were ecstatic. I can't tell you how many "You were my childhood hero" and "I miss you, Geno" comments I got, and one girl even got kind of emotional.
If Geno has only had one major role in a game in 22 years and people are STILL requesting him so often to be in the game, what does that say about Geno and Super Mario RPG in general? You made an excellent point when you said that Super Mario RPG really was, for us older fans, the first deeper and wider look at the Mario universe, and for many of us it was the canon world for so long.
Also, as you said, Geno's inclusion is way more than just the character himself getting into Smash. It's an acknowledgement of that world, that game and that character that we all grew up with, and love so much. (To the point where so many people still haven't forgotten about it, and are keeping it alive.)
I think anybody that could support characters like K. Rool, Isaac or Banjo Kazooie can understand the significance of Geno's inclusion, and if anything I would argue that Geno's cause is even more meaningful, given how neglected he has been for so much longer.
Please Daddy Sakurai, make all of us Geno fan's wishes come true, and give us back our star warrior!

I see your intention but I would still disagree with you. The Mario series is still ongoing, Many other characters like Peach, Toad and Yoshi can still live with this series and star in the newest video game and show their existence. They are not just memories to old fans, but are also currently being played by kids and new fans today.
We should judge that why Geno is not having the same treat like Peach, Bowser or Daisy if he has the same popularity and love but is totally ignored by Nintendo. People have been requesting Geno for 22 years is because Nintendo never give him a chance. It's just simply NIntendo's bias and fault. There is no excuse for them to do so. Smash bros is not the place to justify or redeem their crime.
Sakurai isn't really in charge of that, since he is not a Mario game director or he wasn't the director of Geno. He is more like a ordinary fan like us. The question should be whether the current Mario directors want to bring him back to a new Mario RPG game.
I've never played mario rpg, but I've recently become a huge fan of his. He's such an interesting character and absolutely has the move potential to be a great smash fighter. I hope one day we get a remake of mario rpg, or even a sequel.
At first Geno appeared as portrait in the next RPG but removed due to copyright reason. Maybe he can still return in Paper games or different sport games.
Since the Brawl spec days I've always thought of Geno as one of those "oh, yeah, that would be cool I guess" characters, but after watching this I am 100% on the Geno hype bandwagon and I will go nuts if he is announced. Your videos are just getting better and better!

His chances of being in smash have been improving since after brawl. He's been heavily requested as much as King k. Rool and Ridley. On top of that, the man himself Sakurai Even wants him in. So not only is he requested but even Sakurai wants him in. As stated by many people including myself, with Cloud in smash again and square in the picture again there is no reason why Geno can't get in. I got Ridley and King k rool. Geno is my last big request for smash, and in my heart he will make it in. others character's I want to see is Issac from Golden sun, Banjo and kazooie and shantae
Except people know Cloud, nobody outside the Smash community, NOBODY has heard of Geno. Also k Rool and Ridley are more important characters to their series and are owned by Nintendo
He needs to be wanted by the Mario series directors, tho. If they don't volunteerly push him, they wouldn't ask Sakurai to pick him as the series rep.
It's unfortunate that Geno was so underutilized since SMRPG. That game really is a 'you had to be there' sort of thing, as it was a gateway RPG back during the golden age of JRPGs. Hell, SMRPG improved my reading and writing as a kid and had one of the first logic puzzles I'd ever encountered. I remember solving the minion puzzle in Bowser's castle and being so proud of myself when I got the answer right.
Geno, though, really resonated with me. He was a bit edgy for a Mario character, used guns and lasers, and was a complete enigma. I loved this character. Ever since 64 I'd hoped they might include him. I'd given up hope completely until they included his costume in Smash Wii U, but I really want to see him implemented completely. Hell, I'd settle for an Assist Trophy. It'd just put some closure on this character's journey and my relationship with him.

I wish they just straight up said the Ballot would be used for a new game, if they did Waluigi, Lyn, Ashley, and other characters who appeared in Non-Playable roles in Smash 4 would possibly be in Ultimate. I mean I guess they didn't plan for another game at the time.
To be honest I had never stopped to really think what was the appeal for Super Mario RPG besides being a beginners JRPG but you've nailed it. I can really relate to everything you said about the game bringing personalities to these cahracters and having such a vast world solidified what we used to do on notebooks and so on. I was about 7 when the game came out and it was definitely love at first sight. So much so that I wouldn't really get on the N64 train for a while, my SNES was still plugged and I was still palying this game. I played it for years and still occasionally do. Very good video.

Back in the Brawl days, I was a Simon/Castlevania and a Mega Man fan. It felt like if Geno got in, that would eliminate either of those other characters.
But times have changed, and since Wii U, I've come to better understand why Geno deserves to be in (at the very least) this iteration of Smash Bros. Honestly, I couldn't care less about the Pokemon rep, or another Fire Emblem character...but after Simon and Richter, I want other fans to feel the same satisfaction I did. Besides, Sakurai can't end on a subdued note...he'll have to close out the reveals with a bang. And Geno? There's a show-stopper if I ever saw one.
My only hope (and fear, I suppose) is that Square will attempt to shoehorn Sora into the game in Geno's place. But if Sakurai truly has the final say, I don't think he'd take Sora without Geno.
The issue for SquareEnix is that they dont really notice Geno and try to build him further role despite his high popularity. Like you say they still prefer their own original characters.
Maybe FE and Pokemon are overrepresented, but some like Zelda and Kirby are not really. Unless Geno could make debut in a separate franchise, he is unlikely considered a franchise of Mario which already has a steady main cast to begin with.
To be honest I want a another fire emblem character but not as a sword user like Hector he's a popular character and he's a Axe user I can see Axe and magic users probably making it in we need a viraite of them

was for waluigi... id like to see him in to represent the random mario sports games but he is an assist so i have no hope there. im ok with his absence though, it feels more fitting to his character to get shafted to npc/assist then to actually be playable. like he gets the short end in every game hes in and smash is no different lol

Nice. Great video Papa Geno! I completely understand. I was born in the 90's and my older brother had a SNES with Super Mario RPG. It was the first RPG I ever played and got me into RPGs wholeheartedly. I love Mallow and Geno, and would love to see one of them in smash!
same! i expect mallow in as well as geno if geno gets in, an assist or in his victory theme or in his moveset somehow (final smash maybe?) i expect both characters included in some way
I don't think that is a correct thought. Its nice they're remembered, but they should keep their existence in more games to have people know them, not just stick to one game since they cannot get more spotlights.

All these fan-favorite requests getting in, including Banjo-Kazooie, even if Geno isn't going to be part of the Fighter Pass, we can't let the momentum die down. We have to let Square Enix know we want this (because I think they're the bigger factor here, since Sakurai already seems to be onboard with the idea).
Personally I don't see Geno part of the DLC content too, but both Square and Nintendo should understand this character has the popularity and potential to be brought into to modern video games.

My first understanding of Geno was when first went on the internet. This was back in around 2010 when I bought Brawl. I remember getting it from Toys R Us as a matter of fact. And when I started going online I discovered smash 64, and melee and the five characters cut from melee to brawl. This is when I started seeing people advocating for Little Mac, K Rool, Ridley, and Mega man. I knew about all of these characters. I knew about punch out and his assist trophy in brawl and I thought it would be cool to see an assist upgraded. Mega Man I remember people wanting Also because it was the time when legends 3 and a few other games was cancelled and the series was on a hiatus. DKCR was announced around this time and I knew about K Rool. And as for Ridley, I found out about Metroid’s history and I thought out of all the bosses in brawl he would be the coolest to play as
But then I found out the most wanted Mario character was Geno. I had no idea who he was and I was expecting a character like Toad, Bowser Jr., Waluigi, Daisy, Rosalina, or even Paper Mario or Dr. Mario’s return. He was a Mario character but he was an unknown. All I knew about him was that he was a fan favorite niche character who despite being a Mario character, he was owned by a third party. The combo was very odd and it didn’t seem possible. So even when in my earliest rosters I had him. I thought he was highly requested and would be cool way to represent all of the Mario RPGs as a whole. But even then, as someone born in 1999, it felt odd. It wasn’t until the mii costume was revealed that the talks for Geno came back up. And with ultimate having characters like Simon, K Rool, and Ridley finally in. I have a strong feeling that for your sake we will finally see Geno again. In fact for the sake of you, many other fans, and for a chance to see these characters again, not only do I think he will be playable, I want him in. Even as someone who has always wanted Toad playable in some capacity, and as someone who loves Waluigi and believes that die to the outcry, he has a high chance in my mind to come as DLC, I want to see Geno.

If they could keep appearances in more games, they would not just be old fans childhood memories that most people don't know well while others like Yoshi, Toad and Daisy can just keep getting more attentions like you say.

KingKRool is part of the main cast but Geno is only one-time character, that's different to begin with. If you're expressing dissapointment about KingKRool's longtime absence, sure he could have been in more recent Mario sport games instead.

This video was such a trip. I grew up during the 90s era and my Nintendo console was the 64. That era was amazing! Smash 64 knocked me out of my young mind. Hardly touched the NES; my parents had one but the only games were Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, and Castlevania. Flashforward, the Brawl hype train was an epic ride. Checking the Dojo daily and getting bummed out when the game got delayed twice (it hurt). Brawl may be lacking in what people say gameplay but I truly enjoyed that iteration of Smash. Oh and definitely, Brawl's E3 2006 trailer was mad hype. Everything you mentioned about Geno is close to what my friend told me about him and I hope he makes it in Smash Ultimate; Geno fans get their guy and people like me will get to see what makes him special. You knocked this video out of the park.

I always wondered why Geno was so popular for Smash, but this does make sense. I still feel like it’s weird for a side character from an old Mario spinoff to be in Smash, but now I’m more open to the idea. I would definitely love to see Geno in Mario Kart or something. (Also while we’re at it, let’s bring Vivian from Thousand Year Door back too)

Yea damn. I remember the Brawl days. I was part of the "Geno Alliance" on gamefaqs pre-Brawl, shit you not. We were basically just a collection of nobodies whining and arguing in every thread about why Geno should be playable in Smash, theorizing movesets all sorts of stuff. I think people kind of hated us but tbh I put a lot of my energy into it because I honestly looked at Brawl as Geno's last chance to be relevant again. When it didn't happen, I just let the dream die. I think now with Ultimate Geno might have a chance again, which is cool. I don't have that same fire for him these days, but it would still be satisfying if he finally made it in.

I need to watch my hype, this seems like the best chance we are going to get Geno but I can't lose my mind if he doesn't get it. We have so much already. However if Geno does get in, this game will be truly Ultimate in my eyes.
Nazzul I agree. I'm dying to see him in action but I'm worried that he actually doesn't make it in and I set myself up for disappointment. That being said the game is already pretty much perfect as it is and Geno is more of the icing on the cake for me
I dont think Ultimate means that, it mainly target at all past fighters. After all we cannot really include all Mario characters like Toad, Birdo or Dixie at once.
Geno should have returned in Mario games no matter it is labelled Ultimate or not. Even in Tennis Aces it is also perfect fanserve.

basically. but its established itself with lots of different "canon" and ways to look at it over the years...back then there was almost no "true" story and then "Boom" mario rpg gave us that story. and since it did it first it became the mario lore canon for a lot of the original mario fanbase... and then it got cast aside =(

I was there for the Brawl days... My earliest video were Smash movesets, and I'm even making a new one after over a decade. But I gotta be honest, I never understood the Geno hype. Keep in mind, all that stuff you said about Mario's world getting expanded I got from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, so wanting Geno was like wanting Vivian or Ms. Mowz to be playable.
This video really made realize the importance of the character and I'm totally all for Geno being in Smash for the fans. My only nitpick is that his moveset wouldn't be that game changing like other DLCs, but that doesn't stop me from loving the Bear and Bird.

And I only say that because KH3 is coming soon , sooner than FF7R. Cloud was only in there bc of the remake. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sora came in for KH3
The ceo of Disney of Japan said he's fine with Sora in smash it's up to Sakurai and Square to make the desicion and Cloud got in due to him being a iconic character of Final Fantasy and he made appearances on the GBA and DS
I never understood the push for Geno. To me, he was a side character who only made one appearance and that appearance being in a very old spin-off. He never appeared in the mainline games. I thought people wanted him just because they liked his design and because of some nostalgia. Now, I finally understand the push for Geno. The requests for Geno was no different than the requests for King K. Rool. People wanted King K. Rool because he was becoming forgotten to the DK franchise, obscure, a nobody. People who push for Geno just want to see him back after so many years of being in that one game. At first, I didn't care for Geno, but now I do. I hope Geno gets into Smash so he can make a return, as King K. Rool did.

What you said at first was rather correct. Geno deserves to return but should be in a Mario mainlie game. Samsh bros is technically not a Mario game, it would not ensure that Geno is back to the Mario canon as long as it is a seperate line.

Geno will never ever EVER happen. Square Enix knows they will get nothing out of it. They will insist on 20 other characters to promote their own games before they would let Sakurai touch Geno.

I would say not in Smash bros, but it's sad Square ignores Geno who is such a popular cgaracter. They don't even try to insert him in Octopath as a new character.
While this is a great chance for Geno, it's also a great chance for Sora. While the majority of Mario RPG fans loved Geno and kept him alive all these years, the two games from Square that have had a lot of games on the Nintendo platforms are Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. We already have Cloud repping FF, and maybe we'll get both Geno and Sora, especially Sora for the Kingdom Hearts 3 hype.
Or should say Geno only needs to compete against other Mario series characters as a Mario fighter. If we only talk about new franchises, of course Geno has no business here.
Seriously, I've never heard about Geno until people were meming about him in Smash 4. Your video helped me realize why: I live in Europe. The only game where Geno was in never was released where I live.
Honestly, I still don't really want him in the game, albeit I'm not opposed to him. I also still don't see why he would get into the game over other highly requested characters, but I don't want to criticise other people's genuine dream characters. I understand that many people who want him, genuinely want him, unlike what was with Waluigi.
14:38 you say that, but aside from providing some exposition and context to the star road thing so that there's a little more meaning to the macguffins you get while going on various adventures, Geno's really the one going along with the ride. Meanwhile you have Mario rescuing Peach from Booster, Bowser coming to terms to helping Mario cause he wants his castle back, Peach choosing to escape from her room to join Mario. Mallow actually has a real backstory (raised to think he's a frog, bit of a crybaby) and a full arc when he goes to the cloud kingdom and discovers his true family and all that.
You don't really get that much insight into Geno as a character. "I'm here to fix star road! here's why it needs to be fixed! Okay it's fixed now, bye!" What's his personality, what's his motive for fixing star road aside from some cosmic duty? He never really left that huge of an impression on me outside of his initial appearance at the forest. And you meet him *from* Mario's perspective. I think it's mostly his design and attacks that appeal to people over Mallow, and his overall lack of representation compared to Mario characters.
