Late Prehistory in Sri Lanka: was there a continuum?

Synopsis
This presentation seeks to discuss the possible correlations between the environmental changes in the mid-Holocene and the changes/responses of the contemporary hunter-gatherer communities who occupied the mountainous landscape in Sri Lanka. Methodologically the investigations comprise an analysis of artifacts obtained from a series of regional scale reconnaissance surveys and several stratified excavations conducted in some selected natural caves that accorded the results of reconnaissance surveys. A systematic investigation may open avenues to understand the cultural dynamics of this unexplained time period that has evolutionary significance and also in understanding the formation of the Proto and Early Historic periods in the country. Most of the stratigraphy excavated in caves and alluvial plains suggest a ‘techno-cultural leap’ from Mesolithic to Iron Age or Early Historic periods. The terminal phase of the Mesolithic is archaeologically discernible in stratigraphic levels ascribed to the early second millennium BCE. The most recent reliable date assigned to the Mesolithic culture in Sri Lanka goes back to c.1800 BCE. This leaves a chronological hiatus highlighting of a period of nearly a millennium that remains culturally unexplained.
