The question is about more than policy. It's also a metaphysical question about the essence of marriage. It's about what marriage is in itself. It's about what distinguishes marriage from everything else there is. It's about a property or properties that all and only marriages have.

I'm pro gay marriage, but I agree with Anderson on this one: the SCOTUS should step out of it. If traditional marriage is a position that is valid and rational, then the population will get there. There is nothing in the Constitution that indicates a traditional vision of marriage is discriminatory.

I wish the CNN anchor would just say what he really thinks. He is really saying that he thinks the American people are too stupid, racist, or homophobic to make the right choice, so we who know better, are smarter, and are morally superior should make the decision for them instead of relying on something like the democratic process where the outcome might not be what we want it to be.

Sticks and stones my friend. It's ok though. Being called a bigot doesn't bother me because anyone who knows me would know that it's not true. If we were next door neighbors we would probably be friends.

We should never use the democratic process to vote for or against the civil rights of our citizens. That would be mob rule. That's why we have a constitution. The majority has gotten it wrong many times historically speaking.

Who gives a shit about whether someone wants to transition gender?? It has nothing to do with me. More power to 'em. It;s their body. They can do whatever they want with it.

Ryan brings up SCOTUS case of Roe v. Wade when debating marriage equality; apples & oranges. An applicable case is Loving v. Virginia; marriage case & states. Anderson has a very flawed argument. Culture war on marriage? See states and nations with marriage equality; where's the ongoing culture war? Disappointed in Cuomo not bringing up the obvious difference.

Ryan Anderson's argument "we all support marriage equality" is asinine.
He knew #MarriageEquality was a pro-gay marriage slogan so he resorted to doublespeak, excised the meaning of the term (and all gays), and hoodwinked the audience by saying he supports marriage equality (but only for straight people).
Manipulative dishonesty adds nothing to civic discourse.
Speaking of which, transgender transitions and gay marriage are not political or philosophical topics to be debated, with perhaps opponents of LGBT rights "winning." LGBT people don't have "lifestyles" to and from which Anderson and other Christian supremacists can decide to approve or eliminate options. This is the tyranny of the majority's approach, and it's anathema to Americanism.
LGBT people have LIVES, not lifestyles. Even more, LGBT people have the same unalienable rights as Anderson: the right to live their lives, the right to choose how they live their lives free of government meddling, and the right to pursue their own happiness.
Anderson's claim that Americans need to discuss LGBT private decisions is condescending and immoral. He certainly would oppose "neighbors" discussing his life's most personal decisions, with an eye on telling him he can't do what the majority prohibits.
Anderson's insistence that gays should keep trying to convince their fellow voters to allow them to marry is shockingly ignorant. We don't live in a democracy. We have a constitutional democracy. When Americans are being denied their guaranteed rights, the Constitution is offended, and the harm must be corrected with haste by courts (separation of powers).
"The very purpose of a Bill of Rights was to WITHDRAW CERTAIN SUBJECTS from the vicissitudes of political CONTROVERSY, to place them BEYOND THE REACH OF MAJORITIES and officials and to establish them as legal principles to be APPLIED BY THE COURTS.
"One's RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY, and property, to free speech, a free press, freedom of worship, and assembly, and other fundamental rights MAY NOT BE SUBMITTED TO VOTE; THEY DEPEND ON THE OUTCOME OF NO ELECTIONS."
    - JACKSON, J., West Virginia Stale Board of Education v. Barnette

As of June 26, 2015 it's called MARRIAGE. You can partake in it or not, regardless of your race or gender. Where's the problem? Don't like it? Lump it! Nobody cares about the precious feelings of hateful bigots. End or argument. Go home.

Traditional marriage only got more inclusive. If your marriage is defined by the status of another couple's marriage, be it a neighbor or in another country. You may have more pressing issues.

I wonder how many times a week Ryan Anderson was beat up in high school. Also, I wonder when 33 year old unmarried Ryan Anderson will come out of the closet. His three older brothers aren't married either.
