Totally agree!!! I’m still fighting and praying for justice for the couple who drugged and brutally raped and assaulted me! I knew them and never seen that side of these sick evil predators. I survived and I’m not letting them get away with it!
This! Unfortunately him getting out 19.5 years was him serving his whole sentence. When given time you serve about 75 to 80% ish. He definitely needed a much longer sentence based on his lengthy list of priors.
We need to understand repercussions of the defund the police era means it's only going to get worse. Reality, every women's top five essentials should be: air, water, food, shelter, self-defense…
They should get life if it’s incredibly violent or involving a child after their first conviction. And any sexual crime if proven beyond a reasonable doubt 100% should get half or more of a life sentence. Zero tolerance should be the way. But it’s the opposite actually, I know people who get more time for a possession charge than people who hurt and abuse woman and children. It’s disgusting.
@@tiffanyglatt7548 yes i agree 100%, but as someone who’s tried to go through the justice system and report something as a young adult woman… our justice system would never :-(
Agree! So tired of sex crimes having such low priority and short sentencing. It puts into perspective where women are placed in society. Still in modern times we are less than. I know there are sometimes other victims types but women are the primary victim.
Also, there should be NO STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS on sexual assault cases. It's not like the victims forget about it and get over it after the statute of limitations runs.
I will say this...Tennessee recently adopted the new "Truth In Sentencing" law. That means that violent offenders will serve 100% of their sentence, PERIOD! Thank God for that! I hope and pray that this goes into effect for this violent monster who took Eliza from her loved ones!
Tennessee needs so much more improvement. I have family living there and I temporarily lived there to take care of one of my uncle's and his wife due to health issues. She ( the wife) has lived there all her 70 years there. There is so much they cam do better for older people and crimes it ain't even funny.
My six year old told me he loved me, and I asked him what he loves about me. He thought for a second and said “because you’re always home. It made me tear up. I’m not always home, I work and go to school, but his perception is that I’m available when he needs me. So often I think we feel guilt and pressure that we aren’t doing enough, but in the end making them feel secure in your love is all they really need.
The article was not about telling people to not do anything to protect themselves. There's a push to teach people (men and women) that women are not free for your harassment, satisfaction, or even just OBSERVATION. Leave women alone. Change the culture. Take sexual assault and harassment more seriously. Full stop.
The 2 are not mutually exclusive: you can work on the societal problem that are facilitating all this violence AND teach women to defend themselves. Both have a place. Because even in the most civilized society, bad people and evil still exist and there's nothing wrong with being prepared
Yes that's totally amazing! I don't know what her husband does but without Googling it he also has some bla bla bla the third name so I assume he's also from a wealthy family. Yet she seemed to absolutely love teaching. That video at the beginning was so cute
And it also tells you it could happen to anyone! Some women might feel it couldn't happen to them because X, Y or Z but everyone should be more vigilant.
I was just thinking about that. I can't imagine being the person telling a group of tiny children their teacher isn't coming back. I know they won't tell them the details for the sake of keeping it age appropriate, but it's still so hard.
The saddest part is, after all of that, the questioning, the exam, the terror... more often than not, nothing is done. It makes it that much more scary to come forward!
I was assaulted by a friend’s little brother during a party. Like a neighborhood after church cookout, families, and kids kind of scene. He attacked me while I was napping in the house. I was good friends with his brother we had classes together all through college. I was traveling visiting friends and decided to crash there a few nights. There were no red flags ever this kid had a sterling reputation in the community. I knew I wasn’t a match strength wise so I went limp and started scanning the room. His keys had fallen out of his pocket. He was infuriated that I had stopped fighting back and trying to scream (loud music and he kept a hand around my neck or over my mouth) Stupid bastard was so busy smacking me around he let go of one of my hands for a moment. I grabbed the keys and started slashing on autopilot. I’d never had to physically fight for my life like that before. He’d already told me I wasn’t making it out of that room alive. I’m pretty sure the lack of fight and being able to take a punch saved my life. He wanted me to fight and try to scream he said he liked it, so I didn’t give him what he wanted to buy time. I managed to land his truck key in a thigh after slashing his face. He screamed louder than I ever could have. His brother and some friends came running. I guess I blacked out for a moment once he was off me. One of the friends took him off the property. They were probably planning on hiding him from the cops. Everyone was asking me if I was OK, what was I going to do? I just wanted to get my backpack and walk out of there but I was still afraid for my life. I agreed to a payoff bc I had no other way of assuring them I’d stay silent in the moment. I went to the hospital and reported the attempted rape, went through having a rape kit performed even though there was no DNA inside me. In the end, they brought in a lady cop to talk to me. She told me with my history of mental illness and lack of any evidence that anything other than a beating occurred, that my best option was to take the money and run. Sadly, she wasn’t wrong. If we’d gone to court I probably would’ve ended up with assault charges. I do not blame other women for not coming forward one bit. It is absolutely insane What men can get away with in our society and I find it absolutely terrifying that you really never know what someone’s capable of until you find out 🥺
Love this. The message sent by leaving rape kits untested for years is "we don't value women". It's appalling that money isn't found for this- on either a local, state or federal level.
Another point not being mentioned here, if the previous rape victim was a black woman, racism also plays a part. A rich, white woman gets her rape kit tested immediately.
This case is so devastating, and as a woman, I can’t help but to feel hopeless. No one is looking out for us. It doesn’t matter how many of us are victims to the violent crimes of men. We can only protect and look out for each other and arm ourselves.
@ Teresa I totally agree. I've watched a lot videos like this one, and have just lost so much trust in the world. It feels like a woman is not safe at any time. May God protects us all.
Not just men but honestly women to, it's super embarrassing for men my partner was drugged in his birthday drink and raped I laughed at him at first because I honestly thought he just cheated on me but no that's not what happened
Not just men but honestly women to, it's super embarrassing for men my partner was drugged in his birthday drink and raped I laughed at him at first because I honestly thought he just cheated on me but no that's not what happened
Ladies, no one is coming to save you. You can't rely on the police, the justice system, bystanders, etc. Arm yourselves. Learn self defense. It's not right that we have to do those things, but this world is not right. Make yourself a difficult target and be hard to kill. Rest in peace to Eliza - she seemed like such a bright light in this world *Edited to add, since people want to claim I'm victim blaming: I'm not. Not even close. No woman deserves or is at fault for violence committed against her. Ever. But the sad reality is that it happens every single day. I will not stop encouraging women to be prepared, get training, and acquire the skills and tools to fight back. Hopefully you'll never need it but if someone does pick you as a target, make them regret it.
As a female practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu... I learned to fight off of my back which is where a SA'er wants a victim. I also have the equalizer. I beat the drum on my social media all the time of doing these things. Period... this guy should've never EVER been on the street. He should've been doing 25 - life. The escalation of crime was there since he was 14.
@@thesupportingcast6972 Brazilian Ju-Jitsu-I was introduced to it in a demonstration a decade or so ago, when it had a different name that was unpronounceable and unspellable. I didn’t know that it teaches you to fight off your back. That’s important.
@@DanieGirl-tt9xc HANDS UP AMEEENNN!! Whichever sport! As long as you learn, right?! 😁 Busted arms, knees, and going to sleep if I am on my back. Gotta fight back!
I was also shocked at how fast the internet started throwing stones at her husband with absolutely no evidence whatsoever...when a ex convict who'd just served 20 years for a violent crime abducted and killed her...as if he needed her husband to push him to do it or whatever. it made me so mad.
Love everything you say. I was talking to my husband the other night saying how I’d love to walk our dog at night since it’s finally cooling down, but I don’t feel comfortable and I always have to watch my surroundings. He said “why? Because Habu snakes are nocturnal?” His naivety hurt ngl, explained that no.. it’s men.. I’m scared of men lol
@@PaganPunk I'm guessing your) pup is rowdy? I was always told they were comparable to a border collie in size and temperment. That may be a breed I should pass on if they can or do get aggressive
@@willow_jayde Border Collies, in my experience, are always incredibly well-behaved and easy to train because they're so damn smart. when they're not stimulated and given a job they can tear up some shoes. never owned or met an aggressive border collie, they are amazing dogs. Most herding dogs are. I do get scared of Rhodesians though when they have neglectful owners....those dogs love their own space and their own people. Theyre seldom cuddly dogs in my experience but Ive never owned one.
@@willow_jayde and also border collies are MUCH smaller than Rhodesians. Ive had borders that are 26 pounds full grown, and others that are up to 45-50 pounds. Depends on if they were bred for agility or herding. Most borders bred strictly for herding are a bit more stocky while agility-herding dogs can be smaller and more lithe. Amazing dogs.
It's sad that this is the world we live in. As a older woman I don't go out after dark alone. I won't even answer my door if I'm not expecting someone. We have to always be aware of our surroundings.
As a man with many women I love in my life I get scared for them. I wish I could hit a switch so women could go out alone and feel safe. It breaks my heart that women go through this and I feel powerless to help them.
It’s so unfortunate that as women we never feel safe. Something as simple as being able to go outside when it’s dark has been taken away from half of humanity by the other half.
ditto and thank God I do not. Had I answered a door years ago I would have found a man with a ski mask and a weapon. I went upstairs to see who was there and out of the window and saw him. He fled when he saw me.
It has been mentioned that a group of women I think from the college often ran the same route as she did. It’s possible that she wasn’t the specific target, but he knew women ran there and was waiting to find one alone. I think it was a moment of opportunity, but it is possible he specifically targeted Eliza.
Yes apparently there were several complaints by the runners on the campus and a specific running group that women had been stalked in the early morning hours on that route, they apparently asked for e tea security - that somebody do something about it. It wasn’t taken seriously enough obviously. The complaints went nowhere and there was no request for investigation or to add security. WHY??? One action taken to put patrols out there and have a police presence could have stopped this attack and others like it!!! Such a senseless tragedy!!
Yeah, I think it was Annie Elise from 10 to Life that mentioned this. Complicates the issue some. Or clarifies it, I guess. Depending on how you look at it.
Thank you for covering Eliza's case. I'm a lifelong Memphian, graduated from the same school she did. This city has been in a steady decline filled with violence which I experienced on a very personal level when my older daughter was shot by gang members in 2020 while she was driving down the expressway. They have never been caught. She survived. My beautiful girl survived. I cannot imagine the pain Eliza's family is experiencing. That bright smile and shining spirit obliterated by a garbage human. Memphis was once a great place to live. It will never be again. RIP, sweet Eliza 🥀💜
If you have a Democrat in ANY position in your city, VOTE THEM OUT. THIS MEANS THE ENTIRE ELECTABLE lot of them. VOTE IN THE MIDTERM. MAKE SURE YOU VOTE OUT EVERY SINGLE CORRUPT DEMONCRAT!
I think the difference between taking safety precautions and the victim blaming is the fact that these safety precautions are almost exclusively told to, understood, and utilized by women or other vulnerable groups. It's not something that's taught or spoken of across the board for everyone to do normally.
As always you hit the nail right on the head. It is not a isolated attack by a stranger, it is an attack by a man who has shown himself repeatedly to be a violent offender, with violent friends, and he committed violent crimes. Why isn't he in prison? Love you for long time, Stephanie and love Derek, and just heard you say Team Tupac. Same!
Clearly I haven't watched yet, so you may mention this, but in many places in AR groups of women went out to finish Eliza's run at 4AM to honor her and to show we won't be stopped from doing what we love. 💗
I hope you carry a knife. I listened to a psychology professor explain one time, how a predators mind sees a lone individual jogging. He was talking about women specifically, but said that predators don't focus exclusively on women, of course. He said that it has a similar effect on their minds that happens when, for example, a large predatory cat sees a prey animal running. Triggers their hunting/killing urge. I remember he cautioned that women who are out jogging should avoid wearing headphones, because that's just one more thing that a predator will notice, that the senses of their potential target are impaired. Edit- before anyone attacks me for suggesting carrying a knife, I am a male and I carry a knife everywhere I go, for the same reason. Bad people are out there and we can't change that. But we can take steps to increase the chances that those bad people will experience extreme regret, if they target us.
Oh Stephanie... how much you must bottle up! As a nurse, I've learned to share tears with my patients, their families, and my own family. It's NOT a sign of weakness. It's human. God bless you for telling the victims' stories. Take care of yourself. You're a truly amazing human.💕🙏
This is the first episode of yours that I've gotten teary eyed over. I really dislike humans 75% of the time but those people finishing her run.. man that got me.
Extremely touching that runners finished Eliza's run, hearing your words on women's safety touched home, it's almost ingrained in us to think about every scenario before venture anywhere. Here in the UK the high profile case of Sarah Everard highlighted this and 2 sisters Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman, murdered randomly, one walking in a busy street, the others enjoying a birthday celebration. Sad to say but I can't see it ever changing!
it is, but it probably would have been more productive for them to organize people in protest of policies that saw this man released to the streets despite his criminal record that shows that he is clearly a threat to people around him. he should have been locked up so he can't harm people like this woman or the other woman he raped. unless the runners used their run to bring awareness to the situation and rally people to fight the policies that led to this man being out on the street with access to harm more people then the run didn't do much more than make a touching story.
This one hit home for me…I’m a teacher, mother and runner. It could really happen to anyone and that terrifies me. Hope her family eventually gets some peace.
I admit I'm having a tough time personally but the darkness in the world is bothering me so much lately. I saw a comment saying Henderson is a rabid animal - but animals are kinder to each other sometimes than we are. It's sick how unkind and damaged so many people are 😢
Similar thing happened in Ireland a few months ago, a 23 year old teacher was stabbed as she went on her evening run which fatally killed her.. it was in broad daylight. Her name is Ashling Murphy.. its just so sad, may she rip.
I used to live in New Orleans; it's crime rate has now surpassed Chicago as far as violence goes and it breaks my heart. So many innocent people hurt/killed in cities like NOLA and Memphis. Especially now with two small children, I took a conceal carry course and began carrying everywhere I went. Even still, I don't go hiking/walking alone, I don't keep earbuds in. I'm always worried something could happen to me but my kids. Eliza deserved so much more and I feel for her family. I can't imagine what her last moments must have been like, and I hope the monster that killed her never sees daylight again.
When I was traveling with the carnival in 2009 we had stopped in New Orleans and while there me and one of the other carnival workers was walking down the street to the nearest bar when a white car full of black people was acting strange and kept driving back and forth all of a sudden swerved off the road and chased us and ran him over and then took off. I am very lucky to have escaped getting hit. I thought he was dead because he had over a dozen broken bones and his legs were completely bent backwards but he was just badly injured. It was extremely traumatizing. The police didn't seem to care and the people who did it were never found. I have hated New Orleans ever since.
@@KandyKoRnKorpse This is heart breaking. I heard a 911 call from a woman in downtown NOLA saying that she was watching a woman get raped right out in the open in the street. She was balling her eyes out saying that an unconscious woman was being openly raped and that the man was violent too. She was afraid the woman would be killed. The 911 operator listed the rape as not immediately threatening and the police didn’t show for 12 hours or more. They have just given up on that city… and sadly, it mirrors a lot of other cities that share that demographic makeup. There is no excuse for the level of sheer crime and violence occurring in these places. It’s horrifying. Then we all sit around and wonder why the police interactions and prison stats look the way they do and no one wants to even touch the subject in fear of racism. I just don’t care anymore, it needs to be called out. People are dying, many of whom are also black.
@@persephonel2117 also your thinly-veiled prejudice is pretty unwarranted. Chicago and NOLA are nowhere at the highest for sexual assault.....the top cities with the highest reports of rape are majority white....Anchorage, Rapid City, St Joseph, Carson City....the majority population are white. Shit, Anchorage whites makes up 80 percent of the population. Your ideas are pretty invalid. You should also check for the cities with the highest violent crimes....theyre not what you often think they are.
I agree with you 100% on murderers, rapist and child abusers should be in prison for life. Too many violent prisoners are let out of jail and too many people who shouldn’t be in prison are. The system is broken. Mandatory prison sentencing should be reevaluated. They are not reflective of what many crimes deserve. Some are far too long and some are far too short.
I'm so glad you covered this case, I was so overwhelmed by EVERYONE trying to cover this case min by min, so I'm glad that you usually wait for the case to be solved so that we can hear everything at once and there is a clear picture. Great video as always!
Not to mention all the "theories" that so many irresponsible youtubers were discussing. For instance the theory that the husband hired the guy even though there wasn't a scrap of evidence to suggest it. It's definitely nice seeing this discussed in a normal responsible way
@@Mattdangoscheer oh my god the "theories" were killing me, there is a certain youtuber I had to stop watching because she would just go on livestreams and talk about why the husband looks suspicious, or why it was a hired hit, blah blah blah. It was WAY to much.
I'm not crying, you're crying! This video brought up so many feels. Ugh thank you for illuminating the back log issue. As a rape counselor, it is so frustrating to advocate for survivors when the system is so broken. So much respect, Stephanie.
I’m not trying to disrespect Stephanie what so ever because I absolutely adore her. However there’s another channel that is amazing! As long as you’re a critical thinker, don’t get offended easily and respect facts you should really check out Grey Hughes Investigates!!! He’s freaking amazing! Like I said It’s absolutely no disrespect to Stephanie she is amazing in her own right but Grey is just as amazing!
I live in Memphis. The week of her disappearance, we also had 2 young teens get kidnapped as well. One was found the other is still missing. And then the week of when the found Eliza's body we had a totally different guy (previously released from jail early) drive around the city randomly shoot people and caused the whole city on lockdown from 4pm to almost 11pm when they finally found him. I love my city but we have so many problems. Thus month alone has everyone in Memphis on edge.
lol wow one guy was shooting and you guys stayed inside an afternoon and evening. god forbid you ever get out of memphis and visit a city with real crime, you'll probably stroke out. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the young girl who is still missing.
My sister’s best friend had to work in Memphis for a month and absolutely hated it. The night he got back, he and my sister had a short sleepover and ig they were both relieved he was okay. We all know what Memphis is like further East, and I wouldn’t go back there even if my life was on the line. Safest place is near Graceland and that was the only place my family felt safe enough to go to. Now it’s the same as anywhere else in Memphis. Crazy how badly the city turned into chaos over the decades.
@@Fddlstxx I think two young girls going missing, one girl remaining missing, a kidnapping rape and murder, and a shooting all in a month is REAL crime. Are you just trying to be a jerk?
“The world doesn’t function for my benefit” Truest statement ever said and I couldn’t agree more with your entire take on this. We don’t live in a perfect world and sadly this IS our reality.
And we discussed this at work and I couldn’t believe how many women were saying “well she shouldn’t have been out there at 4AM dressed half naked running in Memphis” That is NOT THE PROBLEM! It’s the predator that attacks someone unprovoked fault It is heartbreaking as a mother knowing that probably the last thought through her mind were her children.. if she would be able to see them again.. and that is devastating
True, but people need to have some street smarts and not put themselves in situations where they can be victimized. Suburban men don't flash money and fancy watches in the hood, its a similar concept.
@@jenniferj5324 I think having the sense to not flash material things vs. simply existing as a woman and being targeted on that basis are two different things. I feel like there’s too much focus on “she should’ve had good sense” v. “Maybe he shouldn’t have been out on the street after having kidnapped someone”. Idk, it’s not even an argument for me. She was living her life and she was taken by a monster. Judicial and legal system at fault too but mainly this sick person.
The way you spoke about her and her children brought me to tears. I had already thought about her last moments and her poor kids growing up without her. It's just sickening and heart wrenching.
OMGOSH, thank you for addressing "victim blaming"! I am Sooo sick of this narrative! It's not victim blaming to say that a woman shouldn't go out & get sloppy drunk & try to walk home alone at 2am. It's COMMON SENSE! And, I'm right there with you on prison sentences. If you rape someone, intentionally kill an innocent person, or physically/sexually harm a child-- you have forfeited your right to live in society! 🤬
One of the best episodes about the realism of the mistreatment of women, whether in leisure life, work, family, etc. Morally devastating in a world where we thought we can be safe and Independent. Everything after 40:00 is on point. Never stop speaking the truth Stephanie! I've been a victim in my own vehicle, let alone on a bike or run. It's a sad situation and world at times. You've become my new favorite channel, more so my favorite unhibited, real, & honest woman/mother. The legal system is most definitely broken
This is so terrible I feel so bad for Eliza and her hubby and kiddos. I work third shift so I'm out all night. One night I was sitting in my truck at my lunch period in the middle of the night. I'm always super cautious being female and working in the middle of the night so this caught me completely off guard and had me shook to the core. I was getting out of my truck to go back into work. Before I got out I looked around I saw no one so I gathered my stuff and got out and started walking around the back of my truck and when I got to the back of the bed of the truck I looked up and standing like five feet in front of me was this creepy @$$ older white guy and his hand was either in his pocket o his waist and because I couldn't see it. I immediately was startled and at that time I saw him glance towards the door of my work where a few of my co workers were going in....they noticed him approach me and started walking towards me and he saw them...looked back at me and stuttered out "uhhhhh u have any money" I told him sorry buddy I don't carry any money or anything on me at work and he legit turned and ran before I was finished my sentence. I ran towards my co workers shook to my core. He was behind a car and waiting for me to get out and he waited for me to start walking around my truck and approached in a way to make sure I didn't see him til last min. I think my co workers prob saved my life or saved me from being robbed idk but Im still shook and now I carry my weapon in my pocket on the way in and have my hand on it until I walk through the doors. The fact that he got that close to me even though I thought I was so safe and aware of my surroundings. ..it still has me phucked up two months later. Now someone would be stupid to approach me in the middle of the night in a parking lot cause I'm ready and waiting. It will be the last decision they make. RIP Eliza I cannot imagine the fear she felt in these last moments and Im just so heartbroken for her and her family. My deepest condolences. I hope this man suffers for the rest of his worthless life. PAINFULLY suffers.
Once, I surprisingly read that some people can't stand you because of your opinions or occasional rants💁.... I'm here for it. Always clapping for you. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you've said. You're a voice of reason.
She’s a real one. For some strange reason society takes offense to literally everything. Some one will ALWAYS get offended by ANYTHING you say. Might as well practice the 1st amendment while we still can and speak whats on your mind. If people don’t agree, ohh well. But I agree with her and you! I stay packing everywhere I go and I live in a rural area where the crime rate is almost nonexistent. Always be prepared for anything. And that’s just logically thinking.
As someone who lives in Memphis about 10 minutes from where this happened, Eliza's abduction shook up our entire neighborhood. I'm more and more of a shut in every day because people are NUTS and I'm not here for it.
Not to mention just shortly after this some dumb dude decided to randomly shoot people. I absolutely love our state but Memphis has gotten extremely scary. It's pretty sad.
no fr I'm in college in another state rn but I live in Memphis and my family/friends are there and everything going on has made me more anxious. I get scared every time I get a call thinking it might be bad news about someone I love
I can relate. Plus, I’m obsessed with true crime and horror movies, everything is fun and games until the sun goes down, and then I’m terrified when I walk my pup. Every story plays in my mind until I’m safely home with the windows and doors locked.
It's crazy to me how much money they are putting into the UofM area and the growth all up and down Highland, but crime is rampant. Also, it is tragic what happened to Eliza, but the countless victims who are still waiting for their kits to be processed (this has been an ongoing problem for years) and the families still waiting on answers and closure for their loved ones who were taken in cold blood is a problem. The monetary value of lineage should not determine how serious law enforcement is about a specific case. On a side note, anyone who claims that Memphis is not a shithole has become nose blind to the giant toilet that they reside in.
I used to love running around my local park but decided to stop because i choose to not leave this earth by the hands of a man, anything can happen to us girls
Stephanie! As a therapist I couldn’t agree more with everything you’ve said. My philosophy is that people will act in violent and egotistical ways when they are disconnected from their communities and other healthy people. When we feel included, important, and part of the world we care about others and understand the impact we have. When we’re disconnected from those things, we have no empathy or care. Such great points!
Its so frustrating to have to explain over and over to men that we, as women are in danger literally for just existing. And how that encompasses every aspect of my life and decision I make as a woman.
I was talking about finding a roommate and I was telling my coworker how I wouldnt want to live alone with a man and he asked why and then I watched the gears turn in his head as he realized and quickly said "never mind that wasnt ok. I dont have to think about it as a man and its fucked up that you do"
You absolutely NAILED IT talking about the parenting issue becoming decay of culture! As a teacher, I see WAY TOO MANY kids that are growing up essentially neglected. If people only saw what we see everyday they’d be advocates for change! I cannot even begin to tell you some of the things I’ve seen… generational cycles of trauma is so real and so impactful on society. Thank you for speaking out!
It makes me so mad. I feel like it won't stop happening until we prove ourselves to be as dangerous if not more dangerous than the men who do this. I'm not a violent person but I gotta admit when I hear stories like this I get vigilante ideas.
Stephanie I think you hit the nail on the head. I agree completely with your views on solving a lot of society’s issues. Everything starts at home and parents have a huge responsibility. I spoke with my husband about this before having kids and told him that if I’m bringing kids into this earth I will be the one to raise them. I’m home caring for my children and doing my best to raise good people that will contribute something positive to society. It’s unfortunate that many families need two incomes or deal with issues like substance abuse and can’t be hands on with raising their kids.
Stephanie, have you heard about the new law going into effect in Illinois where cash bail doesn't have to be made for crimes even including 2nd degree murder? This country has gone insane. I've also noticed that abductions and murder have greatly increased in the past year or 2. Feeling like the 70's and 80's all over again when serial murderers were rampant.
From the perspective of a woman who's also Black, I say this: Memphis is a dangerous city. I have family there. When I visit, I'm armed with a minimum of 4 weapons (2 guns, a stun gun that's really a baton and will stop anyone in their tracks, and pepper spray that strong AF) just to go to the grocery store in the middle of the day. I'd NEVER go anywhere alone at night or early in the morning. Any time it's dark. U of M is a great school. But it's in the middle of the hood! There's a few block radius around the campus that's nice, but overall it's not a safe place for women to be alone. Knowing this, I say yes, this could've been prevented. I'm not victim blaming. But I am stating facts. And the fact is, it's not wise to be out alone at 4 am in Memphis. I understand she's athletic and she was just keeping herself in shape. But a treadmill does the same thing and you're safe at home. I absolutely hate that this is what the world's come to! We SHOULD be able to go for a run and still be alive to make it home. But sometimes you CAN'T because you aren't in a safe area and doing so can cost you your life. There's a two-fold situation here. She wasn't in a safe area to be running alone at 4 am. As well as the perpetrator shouldn't have even been on the streets because he got outta prison early! The justice system is responsible for the murder of this beautiful soul, as well as the rape of another woman. I don't think she truly understood how unsafe the city is and that she was in danger every time she left her home. Even though she lived there, I promise that she wasn't in the majority of the city and truly understood that she lived in such a dangerous place. The Memphis she lived in wasn't the same Memphis that I used to live in and left because it was so bad. My best advice is to get your license to carry a gun, and learn to use it properly. It doesn't guarantee that you won't be in a dangerous situation, but it does give you a great chance to survive that situation. I've experienced it myself. Pumping gas at 9 am, I was approached by two men. All I did was turn to the side where my holsters were and let them know that I was armed. They immediately turned around and left. This was Saturday morning so just a few days ago. I was in the city instead of the suburbs where I live. But I shouldn't have to worry about getting gas and being robbed, raped or worse, just getting gas for my car. Learn hand to hand combat as well. I used to rely on my boxing training to keep me safe, but I'm now disabled and can't fight anymore so I will shoot 1st, and call my sister who's a sheriff later. And shoot to kill. Empty the clip. You only want 1 side of the story...YOURS!!! And that's advice from all my family in law enforcement. It sucks. I feel awful for Eliza, and my heart breaks for her kids. They don't deserve to have this type of hurt for the rest of their lives. I pray for them especially, but for all of her family too. And I pray for all of our safety. We just want to live our lives without the fear of losing it violently. Stay safe loves.
I live in TN and have been to Memphis and all of this is true. We SHOULD be able to, but we just can’t do some things because we share the planet with psychopaths and our justice system is broken.
Giving women tips on how to stay safe, and taking those tips on board, is absolutely fine. I will always do everything I can to protect myself. The issue is that, the moment that an assault or murder happens, whether the victim took those precautions or not doesn't matter at all. The fault is the perpetrator's, because literally nothing gives anyone the right to hurt or kill anyone else. The rule isn't "You can't murder another human being, unless they aren't carrying pepper spray, or are wearing skin-tight shorts." It becomes victim shaming when you use those precautions, and whether the victim followed all of them, to blame them after the fact. No matter what she was wearing, where she was, who she was with, anything she said, what time it was, how well-lit it was, or what protection she was carrying with her, Eliza never deserved this, and cannot be blamed for someone hurting her. Such a tragic case. Thanks for covering it, Stephanie.
Henderson is a wild, rabid animal; the system set him free, and gave him free licence to murder an innocent school teacher. This is beyond awful; what a sweet lady. I'm glad she fought, and fought so hard that she fought him out of his shoes 👏 R.I.P Eliza 💐
Great image! Mother, kindergarten teacher, and beloved wife goes feral when attacked! Flip-flops left at the scene lead to the attacker. Go, Mama! I hope that when her kids are grown they understand that she took him off the playing field forever. Their Mom was a warrior for herself, other women, and for them. He won't ever be going home again. God bless Eliza, her children, their father, and you.
And this "animalistic" mindset is the reason why the violence against women is alive, well and kicking. Women are rarely raped by strangers, it's almost always someone they know and trust. Men rape because they can, because the blame will always fall on a victim regardless of circumstances. Henderson is not an animal, he's just a man, a product of our society and criminal justice system. He repeatedly assaulted and raped people because he knew he can get away with it. Sexual violence against women is not treated seriously or punished adequately, until someone dies.
Women have to worry about losing their bodies and their lives...such a powerful and pain staking statement. It's so sad that we can't go for a free walk at night without looking over our shoulders. As a Mother I worry more about my daughters than my son everyday and it breaks my heart. RIP to this beautiful woman/Mother 💓
As a mom of 3 and 2 being girls I agree it's such a scary world anymore. With our borders open it doesn't help makes it much more unsafe. I live in ohio so I'm a fan of concealed carrying. I have never had to use my weapon however it makes me feel a little safer for myself and other ppl around me. ❤ 😃

41 minutes in and I just want to say thank you! As a mother approaching 40 and someone who loves to run and walk outside, I completely agree with you. No it is not right for any woman to be attacked but there are measures you can do to help keep yourself stay safe. They may not always work but it is better to try then to think the world is just gonna keep you safe. The way things should be & the way things are will never be the same. We are the only ones who can control our plans and I certainly would rather be over cautious than to be so simple and think things that are bad should not happen and that means they won’t happen.
It's sickening that you can't feel safe in your own neighborhood or city, most definitely. As the details of the case unfolded, tho, I was left thinking how had anyone not talked to her about her reckless habits? Running >alone at 4 am< is something me and my male friends don't even do alone. We buddy up. Also, and this comes off victim blamey, but is it common for women to run in a bra and short shorts? It's for her comfort, I get that, but coupled with it being 4 am & this was her regular route, I'm just so confused. We all have sisters, mothers, aunts, many women in our lives we care about. Spread awareness and pair up anytime you engage in outdoor activities at dark, esp if you're not carrying any protection!
100% agree with you!!! Thanks for speaking up. Many people have never experienced assault and are extremely naive about predators. They need to be locked up!
THANK YOU for speaking about the society problems that are continuing to make the world an unsafe space for all! LOVE when you get on your soap box! Love you girl!
"The world doesn't function for my benefit" STEPH, thank you!! I often share the same sentiments on other RUclips videos about women's abductions, etc. and receive mean comments from people who call me a victim blamer and say women should be able to do anything they want any hours of the day. And yes, I agree, we should. But this world sucks and is scary and, like you said, doesn't function for our benefit. We MUST be smart and take precautions. It's just the way the world is. This is so so so important
No, we must start educating men. Women are rarely raped or killed by strangers, it's usually someone they know and trust. Number 1 cause of death of pregnant women is homicide. 1 in 3 women worldwide are not sexually assaulted by men jumping from bushes, but by intimate partners, family members, classmates, friends or work colleagues. Because men are raised to look at women as "objects od desires", not humans. The world doesn't work for the benefit of certain groups of people like women or POC because that's how we built the society. And it's not going to change by telling women "it is what it is" and "boys will be boys".
Right? Yes we SHOULD be able to live our lives without constantly be in fear, but men like this asshole prove time and time again that they cannot be trusted and we HAVE to be on constant alert. We shouldn’t have to, but unfortunately we DO have to. It sucks. It absolutely sucks.

I completely lost it when Stephanie read the letter from the women in Florida who gathered to finish Eliza’s run. Stephanie reading that letter is just one examples of how she goes above and beyond when researching her stories.
Stephanie, thank you for covering this story. I live in Memphis and we are all afraid. Afraid in and out of our homes. I don’t know what it will take to turn this city around. Politicians don’t care and the poverty in Memphis is very high. ❤️
44:18 I don't comment much on anything anymore so that's something. What I want to point out here that was left out is that the guy in question wasn't talking about fewer imprisonments BUT getting nonviolent crimes to be less severe. The state has a harsh approach to things like possession.
Reminds me of the time my alarm bells went off on a run. That was the last time I took a run too. I had a white work van pass me twice before I saw it stopped right in front of the path I was jogging. Thankfully the van parked right after a cut through. Idk what it was but my stomach and brain has serious alarm bells going off. So as soon as I got to the cut through I took it and sprinted down that path. It led to the main road where it was usually busy. I got away and about 2 minutes later that same van passed me again. I was 16 and alone, I had my headphones in but after the passed me a second time I turned my music off and just kept the head phones in. I always took note of faces, tattoos, and cars that passed me by. I always took different running paths at random and random times.
Was home when I heard about this young women and what happened to her. And I could feel my blood pressure rising. Im so sick of this. This just happens too damned often. I'm a runner, and I have also had a few strange encounters with creepy men. I pray they keep this fool in the freaking prison this time. So upsetting. Thinking of her sweet little babies and her husband and family. A good person taken from this world and far too many creeps free to rome. Thanks so much again Stephanie for bringing more light in this case and telling us what a wonderful caring woman she was. 🙌
I’m so happy you covered this case.. Mississippians usually travel to Memphis cause our capital is always under construction. Everyone here has been at war almost about whether she “should’ve known better” to run at 4:30 I’m so happy to hear someone speak more about what a monster this man is and not where she was or what she did she was doing a routine that had been safe for so long and something bad ended up happening it has nothing to do with what time she ran. I hope her family finds love in community that is grieving for her as well. Take a deep breath Stephanie your job is important but I know it takes a lot! So much love for this family and yours
Talking about Generational Trauma. This is something I am currently struggling with, because I don't want that to be my family's legacy. I have personally experienced horrible things that have made me completely and utterly unable to trust a man, even if I've known him my whole life and know he's a good person; I will still avoid being alone with men. Personally, it has become an automatic reaction for me to avoid men at all, and will have a literal panic attack if I find myself alone with one. I have a son. He is 8 years old. I love him to death and want nothing more than for him to be happy and healthy and have a good life. I KNOW that my personal issues with men could ruin him if I'm not careful. I am trying so hard not to allow my own trauma move onto my son. He himself will be a man one day, and I do NOT want him to feel worthless or hated because of my own trauma with men. I am working hard to make sure he knows he's loved, that he means the world to me, and to raise him to be decent human being. I will make him aware of things, though, and teach him to be a better man, to strive to be a better person every day, the way every one of us strive to be. I DO NOT want my personal trauma becoming a Generational Trauma. I will use my trauma to teach, but I will not allow it to become my family's identity. Sorry for the long rant. I got emotional...
Charla, you are so strong and as a fellow boy (now man) mom, what you are doing by deliberately making sure you raise your son to be a good and kind man is very important! Mad respect to you for doing what is hard, you are a great mama!

It's crazy how much safer the outskirts are. I lived in Bartlett in 2015 and decided after six months to go back to Indiana due to inner city crime. However, Indianapolis has turned into a mecca for crime, its everywhere now.
I heard Tennessee is hard to escape. The saying is, "If your car breaks down in Tennessee... You just moved to Tennessee". Which is funny cause that is exactly what happened to my uncle.
Amen to your PSA on society!!! My feelings exactly!! Kids need a parent with an ounce of energy to raise them and interact with them. As a former foster parent I have seen so much preventable harm to children simply because the parent is so overwhelmed and systematically poor and stressed and hopeless! It’s the biggest core societal problem in my opinion! Thank you for addressing this and for your excellent video and taking the opportunity to speak on these problem topics related to this case!!
I was devastated when I first heard about this case, and when she first went missing. My heart sank. This is exactly why I will always advocate for women learning self-defense in many forms. I will not go on walks or hikes without my sidearm. Eliza did not deserve this. No woman does. But it seems we have to be just as, if not more violent than these criminals if we want to survive an encounter with them, because no one is going to save us. I feel so awful for Eliza and her family, but it motivates me even harder to advocate for women learning how to defend themselves.
This is one of your best videos. Thank you for covering this heartbreaking case and speaking so candidly, giving us such important commentary on society, the justice system. ❤
After 20 plus years in working in human services as a SW for adults and aging I second your message on everything! Violent offenders should be ship out to sea in a raft if we aren't gonna address the crime and the nor give the penalty needed for violent crimes. The world is so sick. Giving hope/love does help.

I just want to thank you, Stephanie, for always putting the name of the victim in your title. Their faces in the thumbnail. It shows that you care about spreading THEIR story when they no longer have a voice to share it themselves. It shows to me that you’re doing this because it’s your passion and because you want to educate and spread awareness instead of just doing it for likes, views and as much money as possible. You’re the only true crime creator I still watch, because of your respect for the job. And yeah, the occasional sass is great. Keep going the way you’re going, and thank you again ❤

Especially now when DNA can be taken and stored for years
I will say this...Tennessee recently adopted the new "Truth In Sentencing" law. That means that violent offenders will serve 100% of their sentence, PERIOD! Thank God for that! I hope and pray that this goes into effect for this violent monster who took Eliza from her loved ones!

I think the real problem is that we live ins society that teaches women not to get raped versus teaching men not to rape.
It really is damn near that simple, yup.
Simply and perfectly put
The article was not about telling people to not do anything to protect themselves. There's a push to teach people (men and women) that women are not free for your harassment, satisfaction, or even just OBSERVATION. Leave women alone. Change the culture. Take sexual assault and harassment more seriously. Full stop.
How do you teach people not to commit crimes?
The 2 are not mutually exclusive: you can work on the societal problem that are facilitating all this violence AND teach women to defend themselves. Both have a place. Because even in the most civilized society, bad people and evil still exist and there's nothing wrong with being prepared
She was a billionaire heiress and a teacher. That tells me she taught for the love of it. What a bright light in this dark world.

Or little repercussions done. Sometimes a slap on the wrist which is disrespectful to the surviver, or victim.
It is absolutely insane What men can get away with in our society and I find it absolutely terrifying that you really never know what someone’s capable of until you find out 🥺
My favorite version of Stephanie is the one that gets fired up and goes off on a rant.

It has been mentioned that a group of women I think from the college often ran the same route as she did. It’s possible that she wasn’t the specific target, but he knew women ran there and was waiting to find one alone. I think it was a moment of opportunity, but it is possible he specifically targeted Eliza.
Yeah I heard that too. She and others prepared for a marathon. And many ran that route. I assume he was up all night and looked for a victim
I heard that the University running team (saying that wrong) reported a black suv creeping on them when they ran in the mornings.

I am so thankful your girl survived❤
@@tiffanyclark-grove1989 Thank you so much 💜 After seeing her car bullet-riddled, it's truly a miracle. ✨
Sad to hear what happened to your daughter must have been so traumatic for the both of you especially her. I hope her recovery is going well.
@@vexingvixen5339 Thank you ❤️. Physically, she's doing well despite losing her spleen from a 5.56 AP round. Mentally/emotionally though...sigh...
That’s beautiful ❤️
This made me tear up. That’s so beautiful 🥹
That's really beautiful 💖
You are awesome! Thank you for being part of that and having an awesome attitude!
I hear you 💯
Same Kels same.....I can SO relate to what you said🤓
Extremely touching that runners finished Eliza's run, hearing your words on women's safety touched home, it's almost ingrained in us to think about every scenario before venture anywhere.
Stephanie, I am a teacher and parenting is EVERYTHING. Thank you for calling this out.
I admit I'm having a tough time personally but the darkness in the world is bothering me so much lately. I saw a comment saying Henderson is a rabid animal - but animals are kinder to each other sometimes than we are. It's sick how unkind and damaged so many people are 😢
😪so sorry. Hope you feel better.
And rabid animals are euthanized. They’re not set free to bite more people. I’d be ok with euthanizing these garbage humans.
Similar thing happened in Ireland a few months ago, a 23 year old teacher was stabbed as she went on her evening run which fatally killed her.. it was in broad daylight. Her name is Ashling Murphy.. its just so sad, may she rip.
Repeat offender?
@@KandyKoRnKorpse
This is heart breaking.

@@Fddlstxx how is this an appropriate response? If you have nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all.

It’s the predator that attacks someone unprovoked fault
It is heartbreaking as a mother knowing that probably the last thought through her mind were her children.. if she would be able to see them again.. and that is devastating
Wow that’s so sad
True, but people need to have some street smarts and not put themselves in situations where they can be victimized. Suburban men don't flash money and fancy watches in the hood, its a similar concept.
Women are the worst victim blamers. Until it happens to them.
@@jenniferj5324 Not a similar concept at all, don't reduce women down to being like objects, that's the mentality that rapists have.

Completely agree with everything you said. Violent criminals should remain behind bars forever. They are not able to be rehabilitated.
Larry Singleton is one of the very examples of that.
We really wouldn’t know because the American prison system has never aimed to rehabilitate.
You nailed it Stephanie. The reality we face today as women is fueled by a death in societal values and in good parenting ❤

Me too! Stephanie's rants are spot on. I think i only disagreed once on a small point. I'm here for her rants!

Prayers for Eliza's little boys, husband, family/friends and students. Definitely senseless. My younger sister is a teacher and a runner. 💔
I got literal chill bumps hearing about all the runs in her honor.
I get castration ideas. Physical and hormonal.

Same girl, same.
Great advice. You’ve given me a lot to think about. Stay safe ♥️
I live in TN and have been to Memphis and all of this is true. We SHOULD be able to, but we just can’t do some things because we share the planet with psychopaths and our justice system is broken.
Great advice. 👍 Women who live/travel alone should be armed. Not victim blaming at all but it's just safer!
How sad is it that we have to arm ourselves and always be on the defense. I'm so angry
That was beautifully said. Thank you
Giving women tips on how to stay safe, and taking those tips on board, is absolutely fine.

Our borders are absolutely open.

This world should function for our benefit, but no, it doesn't.
Right? Yes we SHOULD be able to live our lives without constantly be in fear, but men like this asshole prove time and time again that they cannot be trusted and we HAVE to be on constant alert. We shouldn’t have to, but unfortunately we DO have to. It sucks. It absolutely sucks.
Yes yes yes! Agree 100% with this comment
Yep; I'm drilling this into my teen daughter's head on the regular.
Stephanie,
One of my favorite things about your videos is that you give us application, how can we make this world a better place? It starts in the home... And happy people have their eyes on the prize...
Thank you for being a force of change and sharing hope. Because it'd be really easy to be sad and depressed after hearing about all the crime... But you don't leave us there! Thank you! Always live watching your videos 😘
I too grow up shielding myself from emotion. Thank you for your work. You have no clue how it's affected my life.
I definitely got teary-eyed and chills when you were reading what the lady from Florida wrote about going out and running. I feel like a basket case right now I'm crying as I'm writing this it's just so heartbreaking
Stephanie, you do such an amazing job on all your videos. The time you take to go through these cases is truly extraordinary. You are definitely one of my favorite True Crime Channels. ❤
I completely lost it when Stephanie read the letter from the women in Florida who gathered to finish Eliza’s run. Stephanie reading that letter is just one examples of how she goes above and beyond when researching her stories.
Me too. Sobbed out loud. I wasn't expecting it.
So fun that mainstream media Loves To Cut Context /s
Stephanie, you truly heal my inner child sometimes. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings.
Those incredible women finishing her run really got me emotional , so heartbroken for this family xx
❤️
I’m so happy you covered this case.. Mississippians usually travel to Memphis cause our capital is always under construction. Everyone here has been at war almost about whether she “should’ve known better” to run at 4:30 I’m so happy to hear someone speak more about what a monster this man is and not where she was or what she did she was doing a routine that had been safe for so long and something bad ended up happening it has nothing to do with what time she ran. I hope her family finds love in community that is grieving for her as well. Take a deep breath Stephanie your job is important but I know it takes a lot! So much love for this family and yours
Great points Srephanie. People pay attention please. The system needs to keep these horrid predators locked up.
Go to therapy and carry a gun. That’s all the advice I can give.
You are amazing ✨
This feels intense. I hope it’s working out
Charla, you are so strong and as a fellow boy (now man) mom, what you are doing by deliberately making sure you raise your son to be a good and kind man is very important! Mad respect to you for doing what is hard, you are a great mama!
Teach him to be the type of man that other women can feel safe being alone around and break the generational cycle
I’m a Memphian and what I would give to get out of this city…it is riddled with crime, it’s ridiculous. Thank you for covering & bringing attention to Eliza’s case!!
I'm from Memphis too and it's so sad.
@@adamburdt8794 why is that if you don’t mind me asking?
Is it because people don’t want to help you?
Yes!!
You are awesome, Steph ❤
This is one of your best videos. Thank you for covering this heartbreaking case and speaking so candidly, giving us such important commentary on society, the justice system. ❤
After 20 plus years in working in human services as a SW for adults and aging I second your message on everything! Violent offenders should be ship out to sea in a raft if we aren't gonna address the crime and the nor give the penalty needed for violent crimes. The world is so sick. Giving hope/love does help.
I’m 7 minutes in and almost crying. I had never seen a video of her being herself. I knew she was a wonderful person but I didn’t see it. What a kind soul she was so awful.
Everything you said Stephanie!! You are SPOT on!
And I agree, hate mainstream media.
You’re the best!
This was a great episode. You really did a nice job in her memory and everything you said about society, family life and the bail out program was all spot on! I feel like I have these conversations with a cousin of mine and then I see your videos and your thinking is the same as mine and it’s refreshing to see someone so realistically thinking and trying to get others to see things from that point of view. We all need to hear truth at times. Ty Stephanie
I'm so glad to see you covering this one! Thanks, Stephanie.
Big virtual hugs to her adorable sons, her husband and family. This is a devastating loss to the world, we need people like her desperately especially teaching our children. 💔
Absolutely loved the part where you talked about the difference between victim blaming and encouraging people to take precautions to be safer and avoid getting into issues. Love the analogy you brought up about seatbelts in cars.
Thank you for raising awareness about the reality of what happens with backordered rape kids and advocating for change. Thank you for telling Eliza’s story and what a beautiful soul she was. I love you so much Stephanie. I really feel like your heart is in the right place when you do these videos and it shows, and I know you are helping your community by this. You are the best.
