  • You Don't Love Me has to be one of the most-played Post War blues songs. Yes, a large part of that is the famous Allman Brothers cover but that's just the tip of the iceberg. The basic template for this 1960 hit by Willie Cobbs is from Bob Diddley, "She's Fine, She's Mine". Willie changed the words and the groove but the RIFF is just about the same, he just unburied it from the mountain of percussion on the Bo song. Sammy Lawhorn plays a muscular, in your face, and hard-boiled guitar on the Willie Cobb 45-- according to the Stefan Wirz discography, that's fellow Arkansas native Robert Jr Lockwood on bass too! The most famous Chicago blues version of this tune is by Magic Sam on the classic Delmark record Black Magic. I'll take a quick look at Magic Sam's amazing "mosquito bite" vibrato in his solo. It's looser, faster, and has a bounce to it-- have fun playing this classic!

Johnny thank you for another great lesson.
I has stepped away from listening and plating the blues for a while as I was feeling burnt out a little.
You and your lessons have helped getting the fire again and going thru the catalogue of the artist you cover.
Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge.
You’re keeping me in the woodshed ALOT!

Love the Magic Sam version of "You Don't Love Me". I had it worked up several years ago. I didn't realize I was playing a simpler riff but very similar with slide down to the 4rth fret of the A string(Db) instead of the 9th fret E string.. It just felt more natural to me. Anyhoo... Always a good dance number for the crowd if you can nail the vocal and groove. Not a tune you can throw down at a jam unless you have good experienced players.
    Thanks for all you do.

This is an absolutely killer lesson on the whole range of ways to play. I have been trying to figure the final part of Magic Sam’s solo forever. I could never get the last piece right, where he is playing over the V chord. Thanks for laying it out, Johnny. Those two bends on the the third string separated by the high root on the 1st string and then getting the seventh on the second string (I think it’s easier to grab it with my pinky) is really killer. The rest of the solo with the quick bends on the 2nd chord was a little fast for me but after slowing it down to 3/4 and then 1/2 speed, I think I got it. Just freaking great lessons, brother!! Thank you a million for this one.

Wow, this is one of the must-know blues standards without a doubt!!! I must say I like the riff Sammy Lawhorn plays on the Willie Cobbs recording even better than the later, faster riffs by Buddy Guy, Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Allman Bros. etc. I find it a lot funkier! Thanks Johnny for disecting this essential classic and helping us prepare for our next jam/ope mic night... Any idea how this song traveled to Jamaica?

I meant to bring up the big Dawn Penn hit! There's definately a big blues/r and b/jamaica connection, that I would like to learn more about. I like the space in the Willie Cobbs version. thanks a lot Abrigospardos.
