I actually think the big boy could have easily handled a much longer train because the freight cars of today are all on roller bearings while when she was still in regular service the freight cars had mostly friction bearings
You realize high ball is a term meaning you are clear to go the old signals had a ball and depending on its location determined what you could do a high ball meant you were clear without restrictions
She’s the last of her kind and I am glad to see her alive and she is proving her worth and then some. Steam power is serious and should never be considered obsolete. It can do some amazing things.

If you look at the valve gear when it's in shot. You'll see it's near the bottom of it's slide. So the bar was pretty close to the all the way in the corner.
That wasn’t just the 4014 helping out. The diesel locomotive behind her was shoving hard too. I like how 4014’s stack was talking. She was definitely doing her share too.
well it isn't surprising the 4015 have to help. From what I heard, is that one of the lead train stalled out. The train it self was around 11.000 tons. modern diesel trains pulls around 8000 tons, Big Boy is rated at 3500-4500 tons, when pulling in the hills (Cheyenne freight weight would be around 3800 tons), but she can do 9000 tons on the flat. so in combination with the lead train capable of +-8000 tons, Big Boy's 3500-4500 tons + what 4015 is giving = POWER old style The main reason for that Big Boy isn't rated high when it come to pulling power, comes down how much she can put down without spinning her wheels. And steam train are quite weak at getting a train moving or at low speed, but when you get it moving, first then you can get all the power you want
The diesel is mainly to provide auxiliary systems that diddnt exist when the big boy was in front line service. Head end power to the train, PTC (there is a screen for it on the footplate of 4014) plus it is often used for dynamic braking to helps lessen wear on 4014

That big boy is going low and slow and barely blasting any smoke out his stack. What a wonderful locomotive and one beast of a smooth running machine. ❤
During Union Pacific 4014's refurbishment she was completely rebuilt. Many new parts were manufactured specifically for Big Boy. When it left the shop it was virtually a new locomotive. Originally it was designed to burn Wyoming coal (high Sulphur) however during the rebuild it was redesigned to use #5 fuel oil. During the late 40s one of the Big Boys was converted to burn oil, but it could never build up the steam pressure that the coal fired locomotives did.
Ya man that is very very risky and way its never going to happen there is a reezin why there is a diesel engine in the train so they don't have to work 4014 nearly that hard if at all its very very ixspensive to ceep a steam engine in suervis even a small one so amagin the cost of maintaining a steam locomotive as big as 40 14 in revinew suervis and the ports will have to be musheand because there are no spare parts unless you want to take parts from her sister be no one would let 3you that sents there at a muozeaum so ya not going to happen.

Most people can remember steam trains, my family lived them. My dad could tell you the locomotive going over a grade 3 miles from our house by the whistle when they got to the top of it.
That was something to see. Wish I could have been there. My sense of history is so strong I can "feel" the "energy" of it through a video. What a beautiful locomotive and piece of living history. Wonder what it would take to build a Big Boy from scratch today? Untold millions of $$$$ I'm sure.

Not only did 4014 push the failed train, but I was talking to someone a while ago who saw the locomotive in person and one of the volunteers said that the diesel that accompanies 4014 doesn’t actually do anything unless 4014 fails. This might be common knowledge already, but this also means that 4014 was moving two trains and three diesels. What a Chad!
Awesome sauce 👌🏻 😎! Watched 👀 it 3 times ⏲️! You can tell how hard it is working by the color of the smoke and the cadence and timber of the chuffing. I remember a story about the 4-8-4. A long train 🚆 was stalled on a hill. And the Engineer called dispatch. Reports the situation. The Engineer on the 4-8-4 called the dispatcher, said that he was right behind him, and was able to help. He received permission to couple on the rear of the stalled train. Tied on. And then started to push in the slack slowly 🐌 💪. When the ol gal had stopped, he called out to the lead Engineer, "Ok, I'm tied on and have removed the most slack as possible. I'm at throttle notch 49." The lead Engineer replied, "Notch 49? What is that?" "I'm a steam locomotive 🚂. And my throttle has 49 positions. You can release your train brakes and throttle up, over. " "Roger that. Advancing throttle. " "Moving. Slowly 🐌. " Then, the 4-8-4 slowly 🐌 started to creep forward. Picked up speed and, I think, about this speed. I do not remember what happened when they reached the creast of the hill, though. Probably parted ways. And finished up their excursion... 😊

This is one of those "Hell yea I still got it" moments. Big Boy proved he still had it in him!
Not many people know this but this is the reason big boy was designed. To push heavy trains up hills.
It's been at least 61 years since that's happened! The last Big Boy retired July 1962, so there hasn't been a chance till Union Pacific restored 4014!

No help from the diesel behind the steam. Look at the video carefully. No visible diesel exhaust. Therefore, her generators were not under load
