Well uh,, Checkbook diplomacy is when a country uses things like economic aid/investments in another country to gain leverage. Most well known example is between the PRC and the ROC in mostly the Pacific
Nauru itself is a very notable example of just, blatant bribery (PRC and ROC is not the only example of Nauru taking bribes, certainly not the last with Australia right there /hj)
•1980; Nauru recognised/established relations with Taiwan
•2003; China (I think allegedly) bribed Nauru and Taiwan severed relations
•2005; Taiwan pays Nauru more money to switch allegiance
•2024; Nauru severs relations with Taiwan again and reestablishes ties with China, again.. After being bribed, again..
