  • Peter Koppes of The Church celebrates the 30th anniversary of Starfish. Starfish was the record that introduced the band to a wider audience worldwide. Koppes talks about the creation and recording process. He offers his own perspective on the music, makes some interesting references and comparisons between the presence and the past. The interview is filled with tremendous amount of details and little known facts. The Church still continues to make great music to this day, but every now and then they still celebrate the past. The interview took place at the Lincoln Hall in Chicago, Illinois on October 17, 2018. The filming and the interview by Mark Kadzielawa.

Love Peter's music and signature guitar style/playing, along with his wonderful sustain and dreamy use of the e-bow. A master craftsman weaving his magic within the fabric of The Church. Much respect. Thank you!

What a most interesting and educational chat thank you.
All that wasn't mentioned is how Peter is performing A New Season at our wedding in Brisbane 29-2-24.
Ok yeah nah :) but the lovely acoustic rendition from El Momento Descuidado will be present.
Thanks for everything art, if you ever read this Peter and I couldn't believe my ears when the band played Waiting for the Sun [ my fav ] at The Church - Further Deeper etc tour in Brissy those years ago.
    Cheers mate.

Pete's soft spoken, but even so. Let us strain to hear the questions and not the responses. Good interview otherwise.

What an incredible discussion of music theory and what's behind the sounds of some of the most innovative artists. This should be a master class if not a full blown course at Juliard or other prestigious music school.

And a wonderful person. I had the chance to meet the band when they played once in Madrid and I talked to him for hours. I will never forget it. If you read this Peter, I am the Spanish girl who was learning to play drumms. Nice to hear you again!

The “Man, Woman,Life, Dearh, Infinity” is truly excellent. One of their very best. I just discovered it and it’s extraordinary. On heavy rotation.

There's a light directly above Peter's head and at first glance I thought it was a bright beam from the Divine into his crown chakra! Yes, I know it's an optical illusion, but I love it! Even tricks of the light can point out hidden truths sometimes.

What a fascinating interview. It’s so great to see that these very sophisticated records were made by great musicians who truly are driven by passion and great intellect. Peter what a pleasure to get to know you better through yhis interview. Your music has had a profound effect on me since the first moment I heard Milky way in 1988 and bought the Starfish album as a 13 year old boy. Thx so much for sharing your love of music!

The "Man Woman" album is high on my list of ranking all their albums. And that says a lot when MWP was not even on it. Thanks to Peter, who does amazing things all over this recording. If it stands as the final album then I'd say they left on a very high note.

I'm glad he said that about them going from Rock N Roll to more of a psychedelic rock. This is what I was trying to explain to him in our conversation. When I read articles they call The Church "psychedelic". I do agree now some of their more recent stuff has taken on that brand but the early stuff even before Starfish (which I still love) was just good alternative Rock N Roll to me.
