Joshua Wheeler was a prestigious Delta Force Master Sergeant, a proud Cherokee Nation citizen, and the first American soldier to be killed in combat with ISIS.
That tells me the criteria for bronze stars must be pretty loose. I don't doubt he was a fine warrior and was given what others wrote him up for but you have to question if handing them out like that lowers their value in the long run.....
Have you ever deployed with a Ranger Task Force, CJSOTF, or SMU? Just in Ranger Regiment, they were doing 120 HVT Hits over a 150 day deployment. There is no "loose criteria" for Bronze Stars among enlisted in Ranger Regiment. Then in the Unit, the OPTEMPO and saturation of real world, critical mission tasks is unbelievable to those in the conventional side. Josh died so that others might live, literally on a hostage rescue mission that freed dozens of other human beings that were scheduled for execution the next day by ISIS animals. He was in my 5-man Recon Team in 1-24 Infantry, 1st Brigade, 25th ID, a very hard-charger, always had a positive attitude. I never knew about his home situation growing up taking care of his siblings and the struggles he bore happily, but saw that drive and resilience in him first-hand on a daily basis. He was a great American to work with.
Ashly Fonseca He died on a mission that saved dozens, who knows what other great deeds he has done for America and people all around the world. You must either be a troll or a supporter of terrorism and tyranny to be so disrespectful towards such a selfless man and his mourning family. He is a true American, you are just some petty person that has to bash on others to make yourself feel better. You are exactly what’s wrong with the world.
Always jackasses in the comments section complaining about the Armed Forces being too liberal with awards. The man was a Delta Force team member and probably acted as point man on numerous missions that encountered enemy combatants. Delta Force and the Rangers do not hand out Bronze Stars like they're candy. If he was awarded a bronze star it's because he earned it and there were probably several other occasions he could have received similar awards, but didn't because of how humble and even secretive the Unit is. 11 Bronze Stars is probably a conservative medal count by the standards of the non-SF commands.
There is a 50+ years old soldier still on active duty. He is still keeping up with other younger soldiers. Imagine 50+ years old and still in active duty combat roles.
I knew the man myself went to school with his sons but he was a great man but also there’s a lot more guys you think that’s been in over 20 years that was still in it like 2 of my best friends dads were apart of joshuas team when he died they also served together in 75th ranger regiment. But they recently retired after 22 years. They are some great guys and you wouldn’t think that they were delta. Just normal shredded looking guys but they just had those killer eyes.
Semper Fi...I met a few Seals and Delta guys when I was in Recon in The Corps, they are truly outstanding men in every way that can be measured...RIP Master Sergeant.
The Corps only has 3 Battalions active and those are typically half staffed unless there is a shooting war. So there aren't many around. My Recon selection course dropped about 70% of the class in the first 2 days, most of those in the pool phase.
The percentage of actually making it into delta force out 1700 highly skilled applicants is .35%. So only 6 people out of 1700 make it. This Delta Force operator should be recognized more than even an Olympian Gold Medalist. Respect and thanks to this humble giant.
Thing is you would probably fail the program because your not mentally fit to be in it. My friends made it into green beret program and I didn’t cause they said “ I wasn’t mentally right” for the program and was taken out although I went through the courses fast and easy.
They should be recognize more than an NFL football player who makes millions of dollars you tell me how many NFL players died last year on the football field
@@SASMADBRUV7 He literally said applicants. 6 out of 1700 applicants will actually be selected. It's like DEVGRU. Hundreds will apply, but only a few actually get selected.
As a veteran I am saddened, and prayers to the family, but I am also thankful that he held the highest honor for selfless sacrifice for all of us and this nation. Rest in peace Soldier, we remain eternally grateful for your love, honor, Duty and integrity for all of us
I live 30 miles south of Roland and muldrow in Cameron Oklahoma and it makes me proud to know that there’s heroes all around and closer than you think. I went in the Oklahoma army national guard and I’m proud to be a native Oklahoman. R.I.P top.
His second in command just received the Medal of Honor for his bravery in that same mission. IMO wheeler also should have gotten one as well. But honestly everyone on that mission should be praised
This is the price we pay for freedom, I am a retired Army disabled veteran, please when you see a veteran or soldier thank them thank you, Joshua, for your service and sacrifice.
Thank you for sharing this, I pray for these men and their families often and hope they all know how thankful so many are for what they do!!! God Bless!
I was in the Army for 5 years, people are impressed with my service and thank me, i just smile a little. But they'll never understand the real heroes and Giants like these guys. I have done nothing compared to these guys.
Happy to call this man my brother. RIP to an incredible man, and patriot. Prayers to his family, unit and friends. Always sad to lose a fellow military man. However, so very thankful for his dedicated service for all of us.

First of all what a sad loss as a father, husband, soldier and friend to many I’m sure. This man’s collective knowledge and experience was immeasurable. I can’t understand why he was on the front line in harms way? Isn’t that the younger warrior’s territory? I’d think at a certain point men such as this should be protected and treasured for what they have to offer? What an immeasurable loss on so many levels.
