Your a very brave man doing that without a ramp or proper workshop. I admire your enthusiasm.
The beauty of having a car like that I guess
He's working in luxury! He has walls and a roof! 🤣
@@ProdigalPorcupine that is true I just meant for ease of access a ramp would be nice.
I still admire his dedication.
I admire his " give it ago" with this job.👍
Absolutely brilliant Matt. It just proves that we should never be afraid to take on these so called "difficult jobs" ourselves. I once had my Bongo fail MOT on a brake imbalance across the back axle due to an oil leak from the driveshaft outer seal. The garage wouldn't do it for me referring me to a commercial repairer, I ordered the new seals and did it in a couple of hours on my drive. Garage guy was a bit quiet when I took it for the retest telling him I'd done it myself.
Wow, that's a job very well done, Matt! You have developed your skills to new heights. Excellent video 👌🏼😀
Thanks, turns out it wasnt too complicated..ish..
@@furiousdriving Simply follow the Haynes advice….assembly is the reverse of disassembly😂
The long awaited "how hard can it be" video, well it turned out replacing the actual solenoid was not the hardest bit, access and rusty bolts was the more tricky stuff, well at least the outcome of the mission was successful and you saved yourself quite a few quid in the process, well done, happy days 🤗
Not a task for the faint-hearted, and while doing camera work too - great stuff, who knew I'd sit and watch a 35 minute video about changing a gearbox solenoid with my cornflakes but here we are! :)
Very glad the job went well! Some of my least favourite jobs on the ZT involve this gearbox, glad the solenoid started it out 👌🏻
I salute you, sir! It was a difficult, horrible job. I would have been daunted by it. As always, having all the required tools makes life so much easier 👍.
Your can do attitude is very inspiring!
Genuinely pleased for you Matt. I love saving money too but not sure I would've attempted that job....Balls of steel!
Excellent job, Matt! Not only very satisfying but a huge saving!
It must be a huge sense of achievement.
I would have given up at the undertray.
Had to double check how much gin was in my glass when I first started watching 😂😂, but wonderful job. You are far braver than me!
Well done Matt. That’s a proper job accomplished!! 👏
Absolutely brilliantly done sir. I would not have attempted that one. Kudos for that .
Well done Matt, great video and what a job to take on! It never ceases to amaze me how you never swear in a video. I do most of my swearing and cursing in the garage!
Hopefully you can now enjoy Hippo some more.
WELL DONE THAT MAN
At least Rover did something right using that box. Easy to maintain. Well done for doing it, I was scared when I had to replace it on my one. (albeit a rover 75)
Fantastic repair, as you said its not just the lying about the ground part , its the research beforehand as well ..top stuff . Best wishes .
Perfect video, it was exactly what I was looking for. Fixed my Freelander and so it lives to see another day in the mud, that's mate👍👍
That was quite a challenge, but very happy you managed to sort it out & restore full functionality to the gearbox again. Don't forget to swap over the wiper arms when you next have a chance as well. 😉
Fantastic!!! Great job! Congratulations from São Paulo, Brazil
Wow well done great video. I fully admire and respect your mindset and efforts in tackling this. Enjoyed watching. Cheers
Well done Matt you have done a brilliant job and increased your skills as well you should be proud you have had a go and got hippo working! Looking forward to his next adventures
Brilliant, well done for tackling that, very impressed!
Tackling a gearbox is rather brave Matt, I keep putting off changing the oil on my Rover 75 auto box.
Get a small funnel and some hose, the filler is not easy to reach!
That was hell of an achievement Matt, makes me annoyed the bits I try and do, would never have tried that job though in a million years, seriously well done!!
Very impressive. What a great piece of work, very well done.
Very well done, was expecting springs and bits and pieces to go everywhere when you took the cover off😤. Nice selection of tools for tinkering 👍🇮🇪
I was expecting a tidal wave of ATF across the floor!
Well done Matt, told you it wasn't such a hard thing. My daughers $600 306 auto has just done 1000kms on its replacement solenoids. Cheers Steve
As seen on Twitter! Didnt it have something else break just after that repair, but back up and running again now of course?
@@furiousdriving yep it was just the fuel pump relay. It’s back on the road again now motoring away!
Excellent video mate, great result and obviously very satisfying for you! Cheers from Western Australia 🍻
You're much more organised than Hubnut so less frustrating to watch (and you kinda know what you're doing)😁
I've just watched the intro of this video. Can you confirm that you are a "professional" photographer?
Very brave fix. Looks like alot could go very very wrong. Love the content
Don't forget to change the automatic transmission's oil filter.
Well done Matt
Nothing went wrong……. I can’t believe it! That ‘can-do’ spirit of yours is infectious.
Mike
Great stuff! So satisfying to successfully complete a job like that on your own, especially one you've received hefty garage quotes for! I'm about to attempt to remove the gearbox and replace the clutch on my Audi Coupe GT, on axle stands. I've bought a gearbox floor jack though so hopefully that'll make the job slightly less impossible... ooh any chance of a W123 video soon, I miss it!! :)
Job well done! That's a huge success. Congratulations! ☺
Great video Matt, good example of where “give it a go” gets you 😊
That colour is not as red as what you would expect from an auto but it looks serviceable, good time for a fluid change. The gearbox should be much better to drive now! Love looking at the 'brain' of an auto its pure electro-mechanical engineering at its best... and very clean!
Absolutely spectacular. Best video ever.
What a Bumsy of a job.
You are a MAD Furious Driving Chap.
Rainman Ray's Repairs has got some major competition.
Aamaaaaziiing!
well done and a fantastic job i was told by somebody in the know you should replace the auto box fluid every 60,000 miles .thanks for the video
Awww, not one solitary lost tool found when you dropped the undertray. I hate it when that happens - so unsatisfying! ;-)
I wish I could say I'm glad I have a manual Freelander, but replacing the clutch slave cylinder is going to make that job look relatively easy...
As for rusty bolts, nowadays I grease every bolt that was difficult to remove before refitting it. It might not be the right thing to do, but I've never had anything fall off. The battery clamp was one that I was particularly glad I did. Despite its rusty head being between two sizes now, it's still quite easy to get off. 😎
not even a 10mm socket!
Matt that’s the first video where you started it full of optimism and actually ended in with optimism and enthusiasm 😂, good job and so well explained along the 3 days 😉.
Very satisfying. Well done. Happy Hippo.
Enjoying the content on your channel keep up with the good work 👌👌
Nicely done, check the level again when it's nice and hot, then do a couple of fluid changes while the undertray is off.
Braver than me, 😉
Well done, Matt! Lovely job 😀
Great job, another freelander back on road. Hard to do jobs like that on stands. Well done fir persevering.
Take plenty of photographs so you know where everything goes and good luck, blooming heck that was easier than I expected
Well done Matt. Awesome job.
Good work Matt!! You had me in stitches with that joke too. If she’s anything like mine she won’t watch so no worries!! 😂
Anything I want kept secret I say in a video, I know she'll never hear it then!
@@furiousdriving 😂
You've a stout heart for taking a job like that on so congrats on the success! 👍regards the rust protection, have you looked at the fluid film stuff that Involvod uses?
Top job Matt. Well done on saving your hard earned.
Hope your joy and optimism extends to revisiting the Merc or the V8, although we should let you savour the moment until the next challenge comes looking for you :)
Fantastic video! I think his proves fixing an Auto isn't such a big scary mystery box that we all think it is! This has given me the confidence to give my Volvo's autobox a go when it goes wrong (which it will) 😂
Glad you got this fixed! 🙂
Fantastic job & it is back on the road.
You must have felt a huge sense of achievement when the job was completed and proven to be successful. Well done ! There are many garages round my way that won't touch a car with auto transmission as they see it as too complex
Well done Matt lots of digging, but overall a good result.
Brilliant job done Matt
Awesome work dude.
Well done matt that looked difficult to do 👍👍
home mechanics shouldn’t be intimidated by gearboxes, if competent tackling engine repairs, then gearbox isn’t really any more of a stretch. more hassle if just using jack stands, easier with a quickjack hydraulic lift or better. Valve bodies and solenoids, gearbox oil and filter changes are pretty straightforward. If you have a Land Rover then a RAVE workshop manual on disc from ebay for a few pounds is an essential. Good to see a gearbox fault being tackled 👍
I have Rover RAVE but turns out I need a back dated PC to run it! Luckily a viewer sent me a PDF of the Freelander manual which was invaluable
@@furiousdriving Using VirtualBox to run it might be a solution, it certainly is for a friend in the motor trade with an "unofficial" copy of a service data app that only runs in Windows XP.
Great work.
Hope my PSA auto box is as easy to fix if it goes wrong.
Great little tinkering video Matt, amazing to think that some people would scrap a car for that issue due to prices that garages charge! It pays to research everything before you took the plunge and got the job done!
With those prices and this cars value I can see why it would be
Awesome job, well done👍
we sell loads of those clocks. they are actually really good for the money
It looks really good quality, Im going to get another for the office
Jatco are the CVT transmissions late model Nissan/Reno/Mitsubishi use, they FAIL often due to not being serviced often enough.
Great job Matt!
Great job, very excellently done......brave. Defiantly a lesson in give anything a go
Good effort, well done ✅
Superb result 👏👏👏👏
Excellent video as its something i need to do as i have the F 4 flashing
Well done! Hopefully that's all done and dusted!
Still Land Rover's best selling vehicle in the modern era, I quit on mine. I went through two and nearly three JF506E's. I had the first year they imported to the US. Still the most maddening timing and belt adjustments on the MG/Rover KV6. It kind of amuses me that the first Elise's had the inline four cylinder of the K engine before switching to Toyota's. I still have mine and I have been considering breaking it for spares for someone who needs them. The correct ATF is absolutely essential and few people would actually put the correct Texaco spec ATF in them, and in the early 2000's a fluid and filter change you did yourself required $400-$800 in Fluid and Filter depending on the dealer. If you want into an auto parts store the idiots 99.9% of the time- they would just hand people Universal Import Fluid and that stuff killed the trans in 5k miles.
Even if one had to buy additional tools, like the deep sockets or extension bars, it would still be a lot cheaper than paying a garage.
And you have them for the next job
Well done Matt great job mate.
Well done sir greetings from Scotland 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
You did great. Well done, you deserve it.
Well done Matt!
Good tinkering video Matt
I already had respect for you, but it has increased with factor 100! Excellent work and video.
Blimey, thanks!
well done you! not surprised you're chuffed.
Nice job! Looked like no fun at all. Those quotes you were given are a great illustration of the racket being run by some dealers/workshops...a two-hour book time job and 120 quid in parts for 650 is bad enough, but 2500? Daylight robbery...hope it feels nice to have saved yourself all that moolah!
I have a suspicion that the garage which quoted £2500 was basically saying "Nah, we ain't doing that for love or money" but without actually coming right out and saying so--they'd know no-one was going to pay that for a job on a car worth £1500.
@@d2factotum Unfortunately, those sort of fees are par for the course in the UK for automatics. Many if not most mechanics it seems simply don't want to learn about them because they don't need to. Autos/semi autos are becoming more popular, though, so maybe we'll see more independant garages wanting to get to know them.
Great work Matt. You underestimate your abilities. I hope you get a ramp one day to make your life easier 😉
We subscribed like you asked us to lol really good to meet you and your son at brands hatch today , hopefully see you at the nec in November
Thank you, and it was great to meet you, hope you had as good a day as we did!
Well done Matt 🙂
well done, you did well there.
Well done - very brave
Well done 👍
It's deader than Phillip Schofields career
well done matt!
Brilliant well done.
Good job.
Well done..
Tackling an auto box and fixing it as well.
I do jobs on the floor like that all the time but i'd be dying for a ramp to be working on a freelander
With its ground clearance its almost the easiest on the floor, but Id still love a ramp or lift
Note too Hubnut this is how you do it.
Two things i hate doing is electrics and gearboxes mate and you have conquered both proud of you mate it's a great channel to watch 🇬🇧♥️👍🏻👍🏻😀👍🏻👍🏻❤️🇬🇧 time for a cup of tea ☕
Very nice job 👏 👍
Well done
