Lovely beginning number with Jack Payne ,very many complex arrangements with his BBC dance band ,he was an extremely hard taskmaster for his musicians and a perfectionist.

Nice to hear a Brit set from somewhat earlier than usual. My favorites are "If Love Were All," "Rhythm King," "Never Swat a Fly," and "She's Such a Comfort to Me."
I like the song "If Love Were All" and Reisman's version is my favorite.
All lovely selections, especially fond of "Me and My Shadow", since it was a favorite song choice for my grandfather.

Track 11. I like the clever way the arrangement switches between brass bass and double bass. The whole arrangement is quite ingenious and rather advanced for a 1929 white orchestra (Carter, Ellington and Henderson of course already were clearing he path towards Swing and were in a whole different ball park). I find that British bands in general made bigger steps forward than their overseas counterparts during these years. Apart from the Mills managed bands (who of course often used black arrangers) the only USA bands that come near are Whiteman and Weems.
I'm well aware that I'm over generalising so please don't kill me for this, my very personal point of view.
