    It's so bizarre; you see people walking around, but nothing really happening. No heavy industry, no trucks (of any real quantity) transporting anything other than soldiers, no trains transporting steel / coal / goods, nothing. Very odd.

    This is among the best of documentaries about DPRK. No narration or biased assumptions, just everything as is: natural and untouched. Thank you for this!

    All the negative comments....They lead a simpler life and can walk to wherever. No rush, no excessive car pollution and no billboards every mile. People don't seem to live in fear like mainstream would have you believe. Trees everywhere beside roads. Compared to New York, this is stress free if you ask me. No one seems in a hurry to get anywhere.

    This footage is, in the most literal sense, awesome. Even the highly-controlled guided tours can't hide the overwhelming bleakness of the place, it's staggering.

    • @leonardobautista1619
      @leonardobautista1619 7 лет назад +2

      Why bleakness? The fact that people are not running around in a surge of hysteria doesn't mean life is bleak

    • @SongBillong
      @SongBillong 7 лет назад +8

      It's grey, it's empty, it's bleak. Bleak doesn't necessarily mean apocalyptic, but compared to everywhere else it just seems so devoid of life. Just my first impression of the place as I've heard the North Koreans themselves are cool people and full of spirit.

      @@SongBillong It is a completely normal city at dusk. Most cities would look exactly like this if it wasn't for the thousands of colourful advertisments everywhere hiding buildings. Learn to appreciate the simplicity and beauty of life and you will stop finding regular buildings "bleak" the second they don't have a McDonalds menu ad on top of them.

    A huge thanks to You for this footage. Sure, the people are the same all over, even in PRC, but the conditions down there makes it very different from almost all the other countries in the world. I appreciate Your rare film because it shows not only the monuments and everything what the local government would like to show, but also the everyday living. I enjoyed pausing the film once inn a while and having a closer look at the people, their clothing, facial expressions, buildings, roads.

    It should be noted that most people leave NK not because of the politics and restrictiveness of the regime, but because they are starving. From what I saw, the land is quite barren. I think what is more important than trying to introduce democracy and capitalism to them is to help them with their agriculture.
    Another thing I noticed about NK, it preaches about "juche" - self-reliance, yet the citizens depend on almost everything from the government.

      +essvee86 The European Union had some humanitarian programs and sent them tractors and other agricultural machinery, unfortunately most of this ends up in the hands of the army or sits there unused just because the government expects free food aids from outside (China sends them a lot of food and other stuff out of compassion and to prevent them threatening the outside world), yet they don't really care about fixing their own problems like agriculture as far as they can feed the elites of Pyongyang through external aid.

    From Beijing it cost about €1500 for a week excluding spending money of about €300 - 400 euros plus gifts for the guides. It works out at about €230 per day for accommodation, all food, one beer at each meal (excluding breakfast), the complete days tour (7am - 7pm) and travel to and from Beijing.

      This was a pre set trip. Itinerary specifically goes to the few maintained towns. They surely have government workers living here. This is by no means a true picture of North Korea. And they don't treat their general population well, by any stretch of the imagination. Their people are programmed from near birth, and this programming continues all their lives. It is a desolate and sad place.

    The footage is absolutely fascinating. I caught myself stopping the video, just to look at the "still" images. Even out in the countryside, you see a lot of soldiers and military walking around. Other than the one lighted street that was filmed at night in Pyongyang, you would think this was literally in the 18th or 19th Century. Another thing I noted, as the photographer was filming while driving around, it appears that there are no drapes or blinds in any of the wondows.

    If you look closely, those roads were not in good shape. Someone mentioned that the majority of roads looked to be concrete, (and I agree....Wonder how they hold up with extreme temperature changes like Korea has?) but I noticed that several roads in Pyongyang were ashpaltine in nature, and it was obvious that the road(s) were frequently and badly patched.....

    At the time I did have permission to film from the vehicle but that permission came with acaveat that if we passed any trucks carrying soldiers I will refrain from filming for that period as not to get myself or the guides in trouble. This also applied to wood burning trucks which the guides did not want filmed. The ipad was not in full view and that is why when the road is extra bumpy it does kind of slip and show the fabric. Just to reiterate - I did have permission to film from the vehicle.

    At or about footage 11:00 the child musicians appear to be air playing their instruments. At night, there seems to be little if any street lights yet "apartment" buildings are colorfully illuminated from the ground to roof like neon Christmas trees. Majority of public, dressed in black, are pedestrian, a few on bicycles. Pedestrians obviously do NOT enjoy right of way, taking their lives in the hands as they attempt to cross streets in the face of any traffic.

    Very interesting video.
    Pyongyang is almost designed completely for politic purposes, the whole city is like a giant trophy for the great leaders. Compared to those fancy monuments, Wonson is more like a "normal" city. Of course this is not what Kim want us to see the most, but it's probably what DPRK really is: neither a utopia in Kim's daydream nor a hell-like "rogue state", but a common country where people live in.

    It's a mosaic of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il in the countryside. It is one of the common types - I posted a link to a close up picture of it in the video description.

    Whoa! Desperate driving there. He doesn't even slow down for the traffic ahead. I heard that they are not allowed to slow down at all when foreigners are on board.

    I was expecting people rushing up to the bus with there hands out asking for food and such. On the first video where it is night time looks like the Pachenga Indian casino all lighted up.Great video.....It made me rethink of North Korea in a new light. Their roads are terrible thou,but guess i'm use to it growing up in East Los Angeles

    Thanks a lot for posting this. I've been watching a lot of NK documentaries and even so, it's still initially surprising that some of those cities look quite so developed....
    But then you notice the buildings look over 30 years old, and show no signs of being occupied, and also that the roads aren't really filled with the traffic they were built for... It's like I'm watching some post apocalyptic movie (eg: "I am legend") except there are slaves to keep things looking superficially acceptable.

    @stiofandebrun I'm actually quite surprised they took you to the less flattering parts of the country and even more by the fact that they let you film it.

    I'm wondering, how hard was it to get into the country, if even it was hard at all? Did you need a visum or something? :)

    You don't see any one smile or wave, even the kids don't wave at the bus... But nice to see you can drive with out a traffic light on every corner, no cops on every corner and no rude nasty coffe pots ...

    No traffic lights at any intersections? Weird but since they are not that many cars on the road it doesn't matter.
