- Juliette, Georgia may seem like a sleepy small town, but it has a dark secret. It’s home to a huge coal-fired power plant that’s been stirring up controversy for years. The plant and the trains that feed it are all massive. But while the engineering may be impressive, some of the statistics and facts surrounding Georgia Power’s Robert W. Scherer power plant have many people frightened.

I live near a similar type generating plant near Houston. Two BNSF 120 car trains from Powder River arrive here every week.
The coal train is unloaded differently, they enter a building, A massive circular type machine grabs the car (still on the rails) and
flips it upside down, dumping the coal into a pit. The train cars always stay connected by a swivel knuckle . The exit the building emptied.
Interesting. Sounds like they're using a rotary dumper.

I would like to add that you would notice that one end is painted a different color. As I understand that makes the end with the coupler that can rotate. The other side has a standard coupler. That allows the car to be rotated.
I work at MSE railroad a short line in south Mississippi, we serve Plant Daniel power plants two coal units. Our trains are also 135 cars long, we dump the entire train in 30-40 minutes. Supposedly, there are plan to shut down both coal units by the end of 2023.

Plant Vogtle. Once Units 3 & 4 are Powered, it will be the Largest Nuclear Power Plant in the United States, and could be the blueprint for Future Nuclear Reactor Construction and Operation.
Nuclear power, the gift that keeps on giving...toxic radioactive waste that last for thousands of years. NO THANKS, coal or natural gas are the most effective and affordable methods to generate power long term supplemented with solar power. Carbon is not causing climate change solar activity and the earths semi elliptical orbit around the sun are why the planet has climate variability.
@@RR98guy You obviously have not done your research properly. Nuclear Reactor Power has never been any cleaner and efficient than it is today. The Only reason no new Nuclear Reactors have finished construction or are in operation is because of Political Red Tape and Fear-Mongering from the 'Mentalists' at the EPA. Plant Vogtle will soon be an essential Power Plant for the State of Georgia for Generations to come once Units 3 & 4 are Operational.

@@RR98guy Not even close. Burning coal emits cadmium, arsenic, mercury, lead, and even radioactive materials. Coal also causes the most deaths per kwh of any method of making electricity and nuclear causes the fewest. Burning coal causes lung cancer, asthma, heart attacks, and strokes. Coming from an engineer who works in the industry, power generation is just like any other natural monopoly, a game of returns on investment. If you want to know why nuclear and coal aren’t in style, type in to a google search ‘eia cost of electricity by source’ and read the full US Government 2020 report. Page 20 sums it up.

Very interesting it seems very honest I believe you're speaking the truth no matter what side of the aisle you're on we still need coal to produce electricity!
Natural gas powerplants could start collecting our poop to be processed into power. We could also burn hemp to power our grids as well. Both BIG OIL and BIG COAL would grind to a halt after that.

I know to some this is heresy, but with all that nice sun down south in Florida and Georgia it amazes me there is not more solar generating faculties. Maybe I just missed them. Please fill me in.
HI Eric, solar generated energy, at this time in the technology, is not sufficient - look at what happened in Germany which led to the collapse of the Merkel government. We need more energy than solar panels can provide - look at the experiment we tried in Nevada. Roughly 1 acre of solar panels can supply ~30 houses (under good weather), you need backup, maintenance, cleaning, energy storage (night time), etc... For storage, China makes ~80% of the lithium batteries and the largest reserves of lithium are in ...Afghanistan! It is a very complex problem, the philosophy of 'green energy" is good, the practicality of it is not, at least at the present time - Hope it helps, Ciao, L

Once Vogtle 3 and 4 are running, it would be awesome to convert a couple of units at Scherer to burn natural gas and retire the other two.
By me they have natural gas plants, but they also have oil reserves. So if Natural Gas is too costly or sparse they can switch to oil in case. They were once coal fired. Hope they don't retire it completely and reconvert Bowen if anything. But coal is a good source, the chimneys take out the soot pollution.
@@42luke93 Even if they take out 90% of the air pollution, Scherer burns about 36,000 tons of coal per day. So, it would still produce 3,600 tons of air pollution per day. And even if the coal has a 90% fixed-carbon content, you're still left with about 360 tons of particulate air pollution per day.

@@42luke93 Just go ahead and ignore the math. Nuclear power does not pollute the air at all and it needs no elaborate pollution control for this.
@@42luke93I 100 percent agree, if you got the coal to burn and the trains to haul it, I’d keep this entire plant running. I know they keep talking about retiring Units 3 and 4 but I wouldn’t if it was me. I’d keep them going until the fuel ran completely out then I’d worry about an alternate power source. The Nuclear Plants would be the next best bet other than coal.
