I'll always defend The Lost World for many reasons but I've always thought the island looks so damn good and is shot expertly. The island feels so natural and real that you get sucked into the journey. The island and the creatures are as beautiful as they are foreboding, which perfectly encapsulates what the series is all about.
Probably cause it wasn't all jungle, it had the forest, the desert, and the tall grass. Had many environments on Site B.
And then they go to San Diego, after somehow the T-Rex killed that whole Crew on this big ass ship. Makes no sense at all and i can‘t belive that they let that in.
@@blackwolf4653 There was supposed to be a couple of raptors that snuck onto the boat but they cut it out. I don't think that's as big a plothole as everyone thinks. Here's how I see it. Someone went to check on him during the journey and he had stopped breathing. So they gave him adrenaline which basically put him into overdrive. This is mentioned to Sarah when they get to San Diego. He goes on the rampage, kills everyone then goes down to the cargo hold. But, before that one guy passed away, he grabbed the controller and closed the doors to the cargo hold after the t Rex went back down.
The last Jurassic World film is practically a cartoon compared to TLW.

This film also has the best characterization of the dinosaurs, instead of just monsters, they were shown as caring parents, and just animal, I love how the buck is so curious during his stroll in San Diego
The dinosaurs in the lost world feel the most animalistic as well as still feeling like monsters at the same time.
This is exactly what I feel about The Lost World. It's atmosphere and environments are just so distinct and unique that it makes every scene with a new predator like the Tyrannosaurus or Velociraptor just feel more memorable.
Definitely hitting the nails on the head with this analysis!
The Lost World version of Sorna felt much more like a real, lived-in ecosystem for these animals in comparison to what we see in the other films. It really felt like there was an actual interaction going on between the animals and their environment, from their aesthetic appearances, their foraging, hunting, and nesting behaviors, and how the animals and the environment of Sorna were in a sense trying to adapt to each other. And how that's not really an easy smooth transition or experience to go through when you have an alien/invasive species introduced into an equally foreign environment, where really anything could happen as these foreign animals and their foreign environment are forced to interact and adapt to each other or potentially perish.
And that was something I was very hopeful to get from Dominion and other recent JW tie-ins of what wild de-extinct prehistoric species could do to the modern environments around the world, but we still have not actually gotten any of those themes at all...
Jurassic Park will always remain as the best in the franchise. When it comes to it's follow up's, The Lost World Jurassic Park is easily my favorite sequel.

The Lost World still holds up as years pass. I’m still watch the movie again.
As a kid I was very fascinated with the lost World Jurassic Park after rewatching this movie I now wish the sequel movies borrowed some ideas from this movie in terms of world building.
TLW is truly something amazing that I do miss, FK's trailer version would have been the closest in atmosphere and visual world building but sadly a lot was cut out.
I'm currently reading both novels again, probably will finish TLW tomorrow, and man, how I miss the darker more intense and serious atmosphere that has been slowly being neglected in the franchise. There aren't any of the movies that I hate, but it's no surprise that the darker ones, or the ones with the darker scenes, are my favorites among them
Are you sure the terannodons (probably spelled that wrong) were trapped in the aviary in JP3 rather than simply using it as part of their nest? I don't remember that ever being stated in the movie. If they were born there it makes sense they would consider it home. My dad had birds and would leave their cage open so they could fly around the hous, but even with the cage open, they would still spend most of their time in or on the cage because they saw it as home. Also, I remember specifically seeing one of the terranodons out in the open on the beach at the end of Lost World, which means it makes sense that it was them that did the attack in the beginning of JP3

I'm still waiting for Isla Sorna to make it's long awaited come back. I know they want to move on from the island motif (understandably so), but there's a lot about Sorna that still has much to be desired.
It’s been confirmed that isla sorna no longer has any dinosaurs on it, they were all transported to mantah corp island, and biosyn sanctuary

@@ksmproductions4976 Well then I think they should show us that instead of telling us. I'm not gonna believe Sorna is completely vacant until I get visual confirmation. Even if I am to believe it's vacant, it doesn't mean they can't still show us the island again at some point.
Tbh, BioSyn Sanctuary should've been Isla Sorna. It would've brought things full circle.

This video helps me understand why I love TLW JP so much, & hold it as an equal to Jurassic Park.
I've been obsessed with Isla Sorna since I was a kid, with TLW & JP3, as well as the Sega arcade game. Never played Trespasser, but I love what that game added to the lore, too. I also just love the atmosphere of the island, with its redwood forests that remind me of the pine tree woods of Maine that I explored as a kid, but, also, the ominous mountains, the jungles & the many foreboding & mysterious InGen buildings. This movie really captured my imagination as a kid, & still does, even 25 years later. It's a shame we never saw the island in the movies, again.
Isla Sorna is *_wild._* THAT is what Spielberg and company are conveying to the audience through what you're discussing here, and how it creates such an interesting contrast with the man-made safari-themed theme park aesthetic of the first film. That's one thing I've always liked about "TLW" here (👏).

Always feels great to see a notification from your channel klayton! Tlw is without a doubt my favorite jurassic sequel. Just the whole vibe, settings, dinosaurs and action sequences have always been so cool and fascinating to me.
This is why I've always been stunned by the reception to this sequel. It feels like a natural progression from the first film and it respects the world created by that film AND expands on it, unlike the other sequels.
The Tyrannosaurs in the book have multiple offspring, as described in the Nest Raid by Dogson and Co.
Regarding post-TLW media, Jurassic World: Aftermath is notable when it comes to this kind of world building. It's set entirely in a secret abandoned base in the shadow of Mount Sibo, which is ominous enough, but then you realize just how many predators are haunting the dark corridors of the place. You also come across traces and even a glimpse of a creature that is never properly identified in-game, which of course doesn't help ease the nerves. Ah, it's a VR experience and the protagonist has no weapons. You can imagine how fun it is 🙃
I honestly never understand the problem people had with the lost world. I mean as an adult now, having seen that film as a kid, still get chills when they go into the tall grass
Truth is, the Lost World had a vibe and aesthetic like no other. Of all the JP sequels, it truly feels the most unique and individual. I think especially the later sequels got too carried away trying to overcorrect themselves or becoming too desperate to recreate moments from the first film.
For me, The Lost World has been splendid since it’s first teaser.

Another aspect many people don‘t talk about is the score. It‘s much more subtle and not as majestic as JP, but intimidating and thrilling. It‘s drastically different from John William‘s other work since it‘s not as bombastic. But it underlines the the threat of the island and constant sense of danger perfectly
Check out Predator 2's theme. I watched it for the first time this summer, and it sounds just like TLW. Also JPs soundtrack track named "Jurassic park gate" sounds like the link between JP and TLWs soundtrack

The aesthetics of Isla Sorna/Site B (and to an extent, the other locations) is one of the reasons why this film is my favorite of the Jurassic Franchise

I saw TLW in the theatre. I enjoyed it when I was 9. I still enjoy it to this day. Everything on the island is great.
I've got to be honest I don't understand why people are so down in this movie. Top notch effects, a cast of memorable characters played by actors who get what kind of movie they're in. A villain you love to see get his comeuppance, several good scenes of tension and action and oh yeah Pete damn Postlethwaite. I love this movie airways have always will.

Hot take(?): I actually prefer the villain plot in this movie to the 1st one, simply because I like how the villain plot is a bit more explored to the end of the film rather than being cut off right into the middle like the first one. Yes they could've did a little bit more show don't tell when exploting the villain plot & yes I know the villain plot would've been followed up in Spielberg's original sequel to Jurassic Park, but even with that in mind it feels like the villain plot in the 1st movie feels like it has yet to be concluded in the film series (idk if Camp Cretacious closed it off or not) but I also like how Lost World's villain plot raises the stakes from a group of people at risk to a whole continent at risk (like what we saw in Dominion to an extent) now there are other things I can praise about this movie's villain plot, and if you don't agree, just keep in mind that's just, my opinion man (Big Lebowski reference).
I agree with most of what you said. What I also appreciated that while Ludlow was an arrogant asshole, he wasn't evil per say like Dodgson or Mills. He was just a boss trying to save his company.
Imo, the first one didn't need villains. The themes of that movie perfectly patch the fact that there are no real human villains besides Nedry. Although, comparing the villains of the two movies with no point of reference, TLW definitely beats the first movie.

Even in Nedry's case he isn't so much a villain as just a disgruntled employee. He basically created the security system while being the only person who really knew how to fix it, making him a shining example of an overworked and underpaid employee setting out to take revenge on their employer with little care or forethought as to the full ramifications of their actions, and he along with everybody else paid dearly for it.
A good chunk of the disasters that took place probably could have been avoided if Hammond literally just treated his staff better instead of exploiting their passion with boundless optimism.

The lost world has always been my personal favorite JP and one of my favorite movies of all time. I'm glad you're talking about its world building. The environments and dinosaurs feel so alive in it.
12:38-12:42 Those sounds did come from walruses. In the Return to Jurassic Park documentary, Gary Rydstrom said they recorded trained Walruses who'd whistle.
I've always loved the Lost World. Maybe as a kid I wasn't able to really explain why, but you really nailed it on the head here. It's such an immersive film. The set and sound design are spectacular.
I always thought the "Apatosaur graveyard" transitioning into the workers village was one of the coolest bits of world building in the whole franchise, even if purely from an aesthetic level. I think it ties in really well with the whole idea of nature reclaiming the man made structures which is obviously also tied into the overall themes of man not really being in control to the degree they think they are. It's also cool that graveyard in the raptor habitat seems to be a bit of a holdover from the novel (which I really wish they had incorporated more of into the movie). I also think the Genetics building in JP3 does a decent job of this as well, although not even close to the same level of atmosphere. Maybe I just have a thing for "abandoned facility being overgrown and in disrepair + dinosaurs" aesthetic though.
I don't think those are Apatosaurus skeletons. InGen did have Apatosaurus DNA but thanks to Nedry's sabotage of the original park, they weren't cloned until Jurassic World. I think those dead bodies in the village are Mamenchisaurus.

I love The Lost World almost as much as the original. I love the raptor scene so much because they’re all running around a rundown ingen facility overgrown with jungle and in decay. Thinking of what it must’ve been like to work there, only for nature to win in the end.
I’m just glad your platform has gotten to where it is. I remember when you first were making videos like Wayback in the way Bexx and thinking when I could do this or but honestly, I’ve got my own writing in my own personal things I want to do I do have an entire spinoff of Jurassic Park written, but seriously doubt it’ll get any work, so thank you for at least giving me the inspiration and info I needed to write it and 1 to 2 hours a day to put into it. It kept me sober.

I think the major issue with the jurassic park sequels and ultimately Jurassic World is they are made exclusively to sell toys to children and the writing/filming suffered for it. The films should have became more darker and followed more closely with what the book offered. a good example of what's wrong with the newer films is to look at the raptor hatchling scenes in both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World. When Allen is holding the baby Velociraptor there is a bit of ominous tension in the scene, You can almost sense his character wants to crush it knowing the danger it will pose once it grows into into adult. Owen's is treated like a hallmark film where even the music tells the audience "oh this is a good guy raptor, ain't it cute, kids?"
JW has way too many small thing holding it back.

TLW deserves a lot of love, even all these years later it’s still a great film.
Whatever people think about The Lost World, they can't deny that it's an atmospheric film and that it's _alive_ on the screen, unlike the later Jurassic Park sequels.
I always love your Lost World videos - partly because I see the film similarily to how you see it, partly because you bring up excellent.points I haven't thought of.
I suspect that people who rate Jurassic World higher than The Lost World somehow miss the fundamental point that the latter, unlike the former, is a true sequel to Jurassic Park (in both theme and execution), and that it's an action adventure sci-fi film that's actually made with a serious mentality and dramatic sensibility (for the kind of film it is - it's of course not meant to be seen as an Academy Award type drama film).
The things you say in this video are 100 % right. The points you explain also perfectly encapsulate that Spielberg should've directed a true third (and final, in my eyes) Jurassic Park film and that it would've dramatized Crichton's Disease X concept from the Lost World novel, possibly ending with the exctinction of the dinosaurs on Site B.
the long grass scene always gave me chills when I was young the way you see the raptors come through the grass then it's first one guy goes down in the back then two more go down then one up front goes down then it's all panic and then the one dude turns round then the raptor just leaps high in the air and just takes him out like that scene shows you the real tactical brilliance of these things
I took one thing from that scene these things aren't just evil monsters they are stealthy hunters.

How have you not covered ‘jurassic park operations’ yet. Its literally the JP game almost everyone has dreamed of for years !!!!!
I agree. Even the peaceful moments on that island were terrifying. It felt like something was going to jump out and maul someone at any moment!
I remember discovering for the first time how they did the Jurassic Park San Diego sequence, when they are going to kidnap the baby rex and saying: Dude, imagine if they had done the same technique in the Sorna forest while they were going to the communications station, like ai follow the rails of a broken monorail, if they see remains of buildings such as laboratories, vehicles, etc. to give the impression that Sorna was a huge factory before the hurricane.
I've never seen this point articulated before and I agree completely. Once you mentioned the "sounds of the jungle" in the trailers for TLW I knew exactly what you meant. I've been saying this same thing for years in defence of this film. There's a raw almost eerie power to Isla Sorna as presented in the film that has never been replicated in the following sequels.
The next film should be called Jurassic PARK and scale back the action. Make it scarier. Set it on Site B. Could be a sequel or prequel. Make it stand in its own but really make it a "spiritual" successor to the first two Jurassic movies.
This is why it will always be my favourite. I loved the world building that the PlayStation game for Lost World brought. It really created this eerie atmosphere of a lost world. The range of species and habitats, and Michael Giachinno’s incredibly haunting score!

The Lost World is such a thoughtful, legendary adventure with a darkly funny mean steak and a sequel that brilliantly knows it can't top the first installment so it does its own thing

i love how you talk about the environmental differences in the Lost World. It adds an edge of realism to an otherwise fantasy/scifi story.
I always come back to one scene that really chills me and grounds the environment. When the hunters flee into the long grass, they being mercenaries, rush in for safety from the Trexes. But, Ajay stops. He, being a longtime African Safari Hunter like Roland knows right away how dangerous long grass is and what types of predators lurk in the brush. Quite a difference from JP3 where raptors just vibe in jungles like every single other species.
"DONT GO INTO THE LONG GRASS" still gives me chills, especially with that added worldbuilding and character building. Ajay has definitely seen and heard about lions picking off people from the long grass and is terrified considering what predatorial equivalent lurks in these grasses
look into " The Ghost and the Darkness " with Michael Douglas for more of the tone that i imagine is running through Ajays head thanks to the world and character building
The Lost World Jurassic Park is Where I became A fan it's in my top 10 favorite movies of all time along with the original
For me, The Lost World always had the best atmosphere. the original movie is a classic with the dinosaurs breaking out, but in the sequel? you're in their house now. no fences, no phones, just you and the jungle.
I also loved how dangerous it depicted the dinosaurs. you're safer in a room full of snakes than a pissed off Rex parent. my favorite scene is when Kelly and Eddy were in the High Hide watching the Rexes pass below.

Even from high up there, armed with guns, I still felt the danger. in my opinion, Jurassic Park worked better as a horror. while the dinosaurs are still just animals, not monsters, it's their size and power that makes them so scary. I've never read the books, but I hear they're much darker and the death scenes are way worse than seen in the movies. such as Dennis Nedry being killed by a Dilo twice his size, grabbing him by the head, lifting him off the ground, and tearing out his organs while he is still alive, screaming for help. heck, I heard that even a baby is killed by compies that invade someone's house.
I have many reasons why I love The Lost World. to me, it's still the best out of all of them.
I love the lost world. It's 1a 1b with JP for me. I loved the vehicles as a kid, and the tyrannosaurs in those woods were terrifying
I just wish Creighton would've touch more on the outcome of Ingen's dinosaurs being able to cross the ocean if they could from the islands onto the mainland before he died

I definitely was a fan of how it felt like a dinosaur ecosystem that people had wandered in too, not a park off the rails... I also liked that there were a lot more people so you could really get a sense for how dangerous the dinos really were, there was a lot more carnage! Lost World is probably my favorite in the series upon revisiting the movies
My favorite thing about tlw is the ending. Just the fact that the public knows is huge.
So many times in media that focus on or include dinosaurs or something similarly strange in a major way at some point, always leans onto either, the creature is a threat that needs to be destroyed and the public never learns about it.
Or the creature is precious and must be protected and hidden to avoid their exploitation.
But tlw just straight up has a CNN report about a growing military escort around the Trex as its being shipped back.
It wasn't some sorta thing where Ingen was trying to sneak the Rex back to the San Diego Park and Ian had to sneak it back trying to avoid the public. Or that they had to make a final attempt to prevent the trex from being taken in the first place.
It's just, ya we have dinosaurs now and they need to be protected but yall need to know so you don't go here.
Hey man I recently stumbled upon your channel your channel and have been watching backwards since. Apart from first saying thank you for the great stuff you produce in general I especially wanna thank you for this video, as it helped me reconcile witch JPII. It had always been my least fav of the trilogy but never could pinpoint why, especially because there are many elements I like the general story line, the animal behavior and more I liked very much about this movie, way more than in JPIII. Turns out my problem was aesthetics all along, the different biome and differing design styles in vehicles etc caused me to not get the usual Jurassic Park feeling. Thanks again this realization helped to II and III on the same level in my order and got me another insight in how my head works about something I've been brooding over for quiet some years :)

In dominon a was happy to see buck and doe back in the lost world they should be back in more movies
What a great point! Our subconscious can tell when things make sense and when they don't even if we don't quite understand why it seems a little off to us in the moment. We pick up on subtleties that effect how we feel. I've always felt that the raptor nest scene in JP3 was kind of cheesy even when I was younger, and it makes sense as to why. JP2 gave us grit and realism that perhaps we didn't appreciate fully, but it still created within us a feeling of true dread in relation to the creatures and the environment! TLW is a terrific film! Another example as to why
Love hearing you talk about Lost World. The first JP will always be the best but Lost World is my go to for which film I want to watch. I’d love to hear a discussion about the humor of The Lost World. The movie has a lot of brilliant deadpan humor but none of it shows up in the scripts you find online. All that’s added after the initial draft.
I think that all this information is very interesting and I find that the
Lost world did well with wording Building the environment of the Second Island and how each of the Dinosaurs have their own space to live.

I agree with you completely that the environment of the island is perfect for world building. That’s why I hate the changed third act, move to San Diego. It’s actually comical how they toned everything down. The Rex bursting through the kids bedroom being cut, the cops showing up and just running away, Japanese businessmen running like they’re in a Godzilla film. Idk what happened to the director to make him change his mind but it changed course for the films to be more “kid friendly”.

Well there's something funny going on with the Pteranodons because at the end of the Lost World they are flying around free but in Jurassic Park III they are caged. There could be a second batch that is free that killed the people on the boat and another batch still inside the aviary.

"Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's THE LOST WORLD" and the many adaptations from 1925, 1960, 1992, 1998, the 1999 TV Series (both 1998-1999 featured Michael Sinelnikoff as Summerlee), and the 2001 BBC TV Film.
I completely agree with the world building. It really is the only movie where we get to see unique territories where these animals have been living for years. Would be great if we get more of that in the future especially now that these animals are loose all over the world. The books did that really well especially the raptor nest in the volcanic caverns in JP. Would love more ominous worlds like that.
It's a shame that when Lost World started doing what it did best something incredibly silly would get forced in that took you out of it. Dinosaurs getting loose and destroying a camp was thrilling...and then an entire jeep flying through the sky and landing in a tree as if thrown by Godzilla took you out of it. Things like that.
The Lost World is a fabulous movie. The animatronics are significantly improved from the original.
The Lost World has such a nostalgic feel to me. I love seeing the Ingen crew capturing the dinos. The music is incredible and has more of an "King Kong" adventure feel during parts of the score. I think I actually prefer the score in this one than the 1st. The TRexs are terrifying, and the CGI is leagues above the newer movies.
Ultimately, The Lost World is the best sequel because of Spielberg, Williams and Koepp. The franchise branding isn’t what makes the first two films special, it’s the filmmaking sensibilities of those involved. A Quiet Place is more of a Jurassic-inspired movie than Dominion is. The spirit of Jurassic lives on in the filmmakers the first film inspired.
Have to agree, I loved the aesthetic of the island in lost world, it's issue was more with plot/pacing. Hands down has the best feel for the world setting to me. That, and I have a good chuckle ever time someone reacts to it and cheers Dieter's death, forgetting that the same thing was essentially happening to the little girl in the beginning. And my favorite viewpont that most the deaths in the movie were caused by Nick and Sarah: caused both camps to come under attack, took the bullets so the bull Rex survived to San Diego, etc.
Really great dive into the story tell and spot on
TLW:JP didn't have monsters locked behind fences, stressed and dependet on human care. But it had a real thriving and surviving animals and that's what made the movie so great for me. The Stegosaurus family crossing the river scene alone was breath taking.
Steven Spielberg is the only director I want making these movies. Idk what it is, but when he’s the director the dinosaurs just look so much better to my eyes.
The cool thing about the TLW movie is that while not being the same as its book's namesake, it still hits on a lot of the themes of the book; and I dare say executes the characters far better.
I love Crichton's TLW but Malcolm stagnates as a character, and kind of repeats himself [even if it is to serve the meta philosophical narrative, Malcolm functions as a hybrid Socrates/Diogenes to push the dialectic].
Malcolm in the movie TLW has a much more human and meaningful progression.
Neither TLW really executes on it's full potential, but both have a lot more going on beneath the surface that just keeps me fascinated.

One thing I never get about Jurassic Park: The Lost World is Ingen covers up the whole thing up somehow including all the death's Hammond's Nephew then spearheads a campaign to open a park in San Diego. Wouldn't just openly showing off dinosaurs especially on the mainland have everyone, government included going "wait so Ian Malcom might of been telling the truth?"

And this might be me just wishful thinking but I have some hope that we might see more of these points that u pointed out now that the dinosaurs are in our world and are lose in the wild.
I have a feeling they could tell similar stories that have the same tones as the films “Prey” and “Beast”.
