Oh! On the topic of tally marks... I recently numbered down the edge of my paper (1-50 or whatever) and then use a paper clip centered over the number to keep track of my rows/rounds. So you just scoot the paper clip down as you go! Super easy, but very effective.

If you do crocheted toques starting at the crown with a magic circle then you can get the smooth hat you like. There are sooo many beautiful patterns that start at the top.
