I watched this video 3 years ago when we couldn’t go to the hairdressers and it worked so well! I haven’t been to a hair dresser since. Every time I need to cut my hair I come back to this video! Thank you so much!! 😁 saved me so much money and time! 🥰
The only stylist I trusted with my straight hair had left my salon during Covid 😟 My hair had grown out really long with terrible split ends. I tried your cut about 8 months ago because your tutorial made it look soo easy & your cheerfulness helped me get up the nerve to cut it myself ✂️ Even though I have arthritis in my hands, I managed to get it done, and was amazed how great it turned out ! I'm getting ready to use your technique again. Just wanted to say Thank you ⚘️
I have very long hair & I always do this for a trim. It works. I'm not wasting money at the salon just for a trim. If you have thick hair like me, you need to be extra careful. Take your time & use the correct scissors. Don't use typical scissors, get the ones specifically for hair! Make sure your hair is damp/wet! It'll make it easier. Also, don't cut too much off your first time! Get comfortable with it!
yeah I wanna try it cause at every trip to the hairsalon I spend 30 euros but... I have A LOT of hair. and very thick. like, my 'beard' to cut would be pretty massive. I'm afraid of what is going to happen if I try this 😅😅😅
MKat, but how do you keep it trimmed? Once you cut off the length, wouldn't it be too short for the next time to put in a rubber band? It seems like you would have to grow it out long all over again before you could trim it. Oh, unless you just keep it really long, I guess. I was looking for a bob haircut technique. Wouldn't work for that.
Had a breakup Felt disgusting Cannot go out due to Covid Needed some bad bi*ch energy Chopped down half of my hair Feeling great😎 Thank you so much for this method❤❤❤❤
This is how I’ve always done it too. After i’ve cut the ‘beard’ i take out the elastic and brush the hair flat down on each side - then make adjustment and make sure the hair is the same lengt on each side.. After that i take the elastic, make a normal low ponytail, bring the ponytail to the front on first the one side - cut any longer hairpieces, then bring/drag the ponytail in the front on the other side and cut off any longer pieces there also. It always work out like that.
I don’t get my hair cut very often as I find it hard to make the time with three young children and the thought of cutting it myself terrified me! However I decided to check RUclips to see how people do it and this is the first video I watched. She did such an amazing job and made it look so simple I decided to give it a try and wow was it ever easy and didn’t take much time at all!! Thank you so much for posting this video and I loved your whole attitude towards cutting hair - why make it complicated!
I never cut my hair on my own before and I tried this today. 😱 It came out beautifully 🥰🥰 Thank you so much for this tutorial! I recommend it to anyone
I have done the U-shape cut "beard cut" a few times and loved it. I hadn't cut my hair in 2, or 3 years! So, it was definitely due for a couple of inches to trim today. My hair is very long so I had to use 4 hair bands. This is my forever go-to hair trimming technique! I love that it only gives a little bit of shape and layering. I hate the sharp V cut, too many layers for my liking.
Ok, so I was scrolling through all the videos on how to trim your own hair and there was waaay too many that had you turn your head upside down, pull your hair this way, that way, tie off here, tie off there, and then decided to check this out. OMG! Like you said, “BOOM”, I was done! Never using any other technique but yours. Thanks for sharing and saving us money!
Thank you, this made my life 100% easier in about 2 minutes! Like you I had tried other methods with lots of steps and this is so much better and the bottom line is so much more precise now. Yay! Thank you!
Amazing! Thank you so much! I’ve never heard of the beard technique but I just tried it and it came out great! I have long, very thick hair and as caregiver for a disabled family member, I just cannot get out of the house for hours at a salon. What a gift you just gave me❣️
I keep coming back to this video. My hairdresser's cut was getting expensive, and I was getting that thin "V" in the back when she was done (no matter how much I tried to explain). I was getting unhappy with it, even though I loved her. This works! I do this, then layer in the front with a razor. Luckily, with long hair, you can get away with minor things. Get compliments all the time, and saves money. Covid lockdown taught us a lot about ourselves. Thanks for your lovely video! ❤
This cut worked REALLY well for my hair, which is curly, thick, bleached, & past my butt long 😅 I only did 2 inches to try it out, & the most difficult & time consuming part of this was separating my hair because I cut it while it was wet. If your hair is long & hard to brush without tangling like mine, I would definitely suggest doing this with dry, flat ironed hair. I took a little bit extra while cutting straight up instead of doing the ponytail cut.
I just did your beard method and it worked! Had a glass of white wine as I chopped away! I love it....& yes it’s me talking and not the wine. Thanks so much from a broke divorced single mom for saving me money.
I love your reaction to your work! As a hairstylist occasionally I had that bubbly client that would love their haircut and show the same excitement as you and that is the best feeling!
It looks fantastic! There are so many hair tutorials on RUclips since ‘covid’ so many hairdressers will find themselves out of a job because if you find a technique that works for you, why bother going to a hairdressers. You’ve found a good length cutting technique and long layers technique. There are other more advanced RUclips tutorials but actually, they have the same end effect so from what I’ve seen, this is just perfect. ♥️
I agree. I cut & dye my own hair for maintenance...but there's nothing like a skilled professional hairdresser to cut evenly & give awesome highlights/lowlights. They'll always be in demand
I haven’t been able to go in for a haircut. Got brave and saw your beard technique - tried it & I love the results. Your sense of humor added to the enjoyment -stay happy.
This is an awesome to-the-point video!! And it worked perfectly on my hair!! I don’t dare go to the salon because for some reason it seems like they hate really long hair and just want to chop it all off to shoulder length. Now my hair nice and healthy, no dead ends! And I didn’t have to go to a salon, where I’m sure they would have cut off far more!
They want to charge you more because your hair is long, I won't go to a salon unless they smarten up and charge me 22.00 like they charge other people because why should I HAVE TO PAY 37.00 all because my hair is long
For the unicorn cut do the ponytail closer to your forehead so the layers are more noticeable 👍🏻 Edit: You'll be able to keep your length but still have more volume with the layers.
We want to remove the length but keep the layered V shape( my hair is 32 inches). After 22 years of growth, I'm cutting 17 inches of hair this spring and she just showed me how.
@@meretriciousinsolent I have been doing the unicorn cut exclusively for like three years and this is why I’m looking for something different. But the beard cut, then the unicorn cut seems like a good idea. That way you are cutting the hemline then the layers.
Yes, the unicorn is when you put a ponytail on your forehead. You can part your hair at the ears, so the back isn't affected. I just use a razor comb and shear the front to keep it off my face. Less hair is cut that way.
That was good!! Oh, try trimming your hair on the new moon for faster growth! I know it sounds silly but it works. Something about the phases of thd moon affects growth just like in farming. Interesting huh?! You look gorgeous! I have curly hair and I have been using the unicorn cut cutting front to back instead of side to side. Pick up limes has a nice layers technique. Though its not quite that quick.
Sis Im just done. Hahaha it needs so much time for me for deciding even I just trimmed my hair a very littleeeee. I havent trimmed it for a year and this my first time doing this by myself. My mom used to do this before but now I live so far from her. It looks so good and healthier I think, although I couldnt do the last step which is a little tiny cuts at the end. Thats all. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you, you saved my hair! I was following one of those unicorn cut videos, but something went wrong and the front of my hair was super short and the back was super long, your video helped me fix it!
The reason the front on the unicorn cut is shorter is by design. You have it at your forehead and are cutting a straight line across. How far up on this ponytail will dictate how short the front will be, so, you don't want to cut straight across right at your forehead. If you want the front and back to be more even, have the ponytail closer to the top of your head and once again, don't cut right at the hair tie, go up about 3 inches then cut.
@@rokelle_2012 lol, I made the comment 8 months ago, since then I have cut my hair again, this time using the butterfly method which worked much better for long layers. Thanks though
I do the unicorn cut for my layers but I like to over direct my ponytail to the left as that's where I part my hair and that help to make it look a bit more balanced with the layering cuz I didn't like having all my layers on one side of my head
A while ago I did a low-ish wolf cut on my hair and the longest lengths were a bit strange and long and uneven at the front, but I lived with it because busy... finally got around to trying this today and my hair is so, so much better! The two in tandem work very well on my wavy hair. Thank you!
PS I know this is bad, but I used fabric scissors because I couldn't find the others and I'd finally got my hair parted and I'd coated it in a hair mask as well. Bit tricky to snip into it after but it worked well. (Sewing community and hairdressers simultaneously dying now...)
I like it! I have wavy hair, too, which is very forgiving when you're trying to do your own cut and you're not a hairdresser. I've done the unicorn cut and it worked out great, but I'm going to try the beard cut now to take some of the length off. Thanks for posting!
Honestly I’ve put off going to get a trim for well over a year because I’m a mother of 3 toddlers and just never want to waste any free time I get on going and also I’ve just had horrible experiences. Well I tried the beard technique to clean up my ends and it worked perfect. Super easy and quick. I didn’t do the layer technique though so i can’t comment how that works. But if you need a little trim I would try this method. It got the job done and it really isn’t complicated . :)
Much, Much better than the ponytail cut!! NOT a fan....due to the layers. This looks great on you! 😎💗 EDIT!...I've done this twice on my hair due to not cutting enough the 1st time: I LOVE HOW EASY THIS IS!!! MAKES THE PERFECT CUT!!! 😎🖒🖒💗💗
I'm SOO glad I found this. I have severe ptsd when it comes to cutting my hair. I was held hostage by my ex for 2-3 years, & he would forcibly make me cut my hair short. It's been 5 years now since I got away from him, but I still will not let anyone cut my hair. Well, actually I did let my mom cut like 6in off a year ago because of the chunks coming out, but it turned out so bad 😅 (still helped though). It's past my butt now, my ends are so dead, & my hair is falling out in chunks in the shower again because of it. I'm very excited to try this, & I just so happen to have the scissors (thank you cosmetology school)! I was gonna do the unicorn cut, but those layers are WAY too short for me.
I'm so glad you were able to get out of that awful situation. My Daughter went through something similar and finally got away too. Live your life, don't let him take away experiences you were supposed to have. Cut your hair Woman, it'll make you feel like a billion bucks because you're in control now! Sending positive vibes your way .. ☮💜🕉
I'm so sorry to that happened to you. I have CPTSD myself, triggers can be so tiring. I'm so glad you have come out the other end and found some independence and ownership of your own hair❤ All the best❤❤
If you don't want a straight line, you gotta point cut, girl - Like making a zig-zag line, essentially - you cut INTO the hair at the line you want it to be cut at - then it blends much better.
I first used this method (not this video though) as well. It might get you a straight cut, but honestly that’s so boring and difficult to make. I recommend rather using the unicorn ponytail method. It’s the easiest ever. I was scared at first because I looked up fails of this method, and there were some… of people who got it all wrong. If you do this properly (right angle, hair from the back on top, hand parallel to you head etc) it works. All the time. I was also worried that the angle might be too much and I will have so much layers I can’t make braids, but if you do the cut parallel with a low angle, it’s only slightly layered. I even used this method when I cut my mums hair the first time and realized it’s not even. She said let’s try this method, and it came out perfectly.
陆光森 I tried the unicorn ponytail method and it didn't take any length off the back of my hair. I did it twice, each time moving the ponytail backwards because I wanted to cut off length at the back. I just ended up with more layers at the back, but my hair was still the same length. I'll try this beard method and see if it will shorten my waist-length hair.
Well end product looks pretty good for a home hair cut BUT, for layers do not put your hair in a ponytail. Just comb everything forward and cut in front of your face. Ling layers drag all the hair towards your chin. For short layers cut up towards eye level. You can also twist the hair and cut between your hand hold and the body of the hair. I hope this makes sense when in doubt just cut a small amount and check to see if you like what your producing. If you want more of a "shag" type if layering comb hair straight up in a ponytail and cut. I recommend you position your hold of the ponytail halfway between the crown and the front hairline. Good luck. Wish i could draw a picture but best i can do for now.
Oh! Thank you so much for posting this video!!! I've been cutting my own hair for years, but my hair gets more curly the longer it gets so I want to grow out the heavy layering to a gentle taper. This method will give me the exact style I was looking for! I'm super excited to start trimming my ends with this method. (I have the corkicelli curl pattern). I subscribed. ♥️☮️
This is awesome & makes so much sense!!! 😂❤️🙌 I've cut mine using the unicorn method & love it because my hair feels thick (my hair is a bit on the thin side) afterwards... except I can never get my length quite right 😐🤦🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️ I can't wait to try your beard method out ✂️💇🏽♀️🙌 thanks so much for this great tutorial!!! 🙋🏻♀️❤️😁
I've done this cut for a few years now. Last week, I did the unicorn cut and followed it with this cut to take off the bottom half inch or so - the unicorn is very feathery/layered & this "beard" cut made the end nice and neat. I just cut it blunt, no cutting in to soften the edge. My hair is 2A, wavy and fine, so it only looks right with a blunt edge.
LOL I commented before finishing the video - you did this in reverse! Also I think what you're doing is the "butterfly" not the unicorn cut. The unicorn sets the ponytail right up by the forehead to give long bangs & feathering around the face.
I don't know you but I absolutely love you! 😂 You are so cheerful it's contagious and it's making me brave enough to try this hair cut. Thanks for sharing your experiments!!
ALSO I had a good idea. What if you practiced doing the "snip snip" into it to make it not blunt on your split ends. Then when you need to thin the ends of the final cut, you practiced? I cut my own hair and well. I am looking to correct it. I will try your method!!
In the middle of Corona, where I live hairdressers had to close completely. I was growing my hair to donate it to children in need of wigs. So here I sat with hair reaching down to my butt annoying me each day. Since it seems like hairsaloons will stay closed for many weeks to come I thought why not? So I tried, cut off 35 cm to donate and then started the "precision work". It may not be as good as made by a hairdresser, but I'm more than okay with the outcome. I feel somehow relieved :D
You’re hilarious 😂 I laughed the whole time. 😂 Great video and even though it’s been four years I’m really glad I found it. It was very helpful. Thank you.

Use a ponytail holder at the bottom, too, to measure out where you want to cut it, and to hold it still while you cut.

Edit: You'll be able to keep your length but still have more volume with the layers.
The length gets straggly though. Fine hair isn't good with this kind of cut.
We want to remove the length but keep the layered V shape( my hair is 32 inches). After 22 years of growth, I'm cutting 17 inches of hair this spring and she just showed me how.

You have the most beautiful curls I have ever seen. I literally thought you curled your hair.
I had tried this & I'm glad it doesn't turns out uneven! Thank you 😊
Honestly I’ve put off going to get a trim for well over a year because I’m a mother of 3 toddlers and just never want to waste any free time I get on going and also I’ve just had horrible experiences.
I'm so glad you have come out the other end and found some independence and ownership of your own hair❤
All the best❤❤
Thank you so much for this. After watching several self-cut videos, yours seemed super easy and I love it!!!
I just got finished doing this and i didn't want any layers like the Unicorn cut. Thank you so much for the video
If you don't want a straight line, you gotta point cut, girl - Like making a zig-zag line, essentially - you cut INTO the hair at the line you want it to be cut at - then it blends much better.
Great! I didn't wait long enough lol
Ha!! I've watched several, but love yours! Yep, I can do this👏🏼
I first used this method (not this video though) as well.
Thank you, valuable explanations 🙂
Hi this video came up on my search for DIY haircuts and I did it today! 😊 It worked, got rid of all the straggly ends x
I cut my own curly hair like this, amazing, thank you🌟
I'm a hairdresser, that looks great girl!!!
Just did my hair, brill results, just how I wanted it , great relatable tutorial 👍🏼
Thank you for this. This helped me fix my hair as I'm growing it out. Now I don't have to spend a bunch at a salon just for a simple trim. Cheers 🍻🤘
Wow. I just did this and it works!!! Fastest and best diy haircut I've done! Thanks 😁
I’ve been watching hair cutting tutorials and came across yours. Just wanted to see a simple trim. You are just so pleasant and fun to watch!
I use this method and haven’t visited a salon in years. It’s too expensive just to get the same or even worse results at the salon.
Saved me every time . U can’t go wrong with this technique.
lock down nearly three months, so decide to cut my own hair. amazing result, thx a lot, it saves me at least $50 every few months.
Works a treat! Thank you! I don't trust myself with the techniques that have several steps so this was perfect for me! Thank you! ❤
I did that !!!! Following you at the very moment of cutting … my hands are still shaking but it worked !!!! Omgggggg you’re the bestttttt girlllllll
This video has saved me so much time and Money, thank you! Well explained, you can see everything really well.
I don't know you but I absolutely love you! 😂 You are so cheerful it's contagious and it's making me brave enough to try this hair cut. Thanks for sharing your experiments!!
You’re freaking adorable and joyful and I love this so much
Omg I did this. This was so much fun and something I’ve feared to do my whole life and I’m so happy I did it :) thank you!!!
Same
You r a natural my hair is similar and I'm going to try now thankyou gorgeous from Australia 🙋♀️
ALSO I had a good idea. What if you practiced doing the "snip snip" into it to make it not blunt on your split ends. Then when you need to thin the ends of the final cut, you practiced? I cut my own hair and well. I am looking to correct it. I will try your method!!
You are a genius 🥇 I have been searching for something simple like this. I can’t wait to try it!!!!
I woyld never go to a salon again! Your hair is beautiful!
I feel somehow relieved :D
haha that was great! your reaction to it is equally cute 🤗😊❤
Well done , looks great.
That’s fab thank you I have really long hair so this was a rather simple job
You’re hilarious 😂 I laughed the whole time. 😂 Great video and even though it’s been four years I’m really glad I found it. It was very helpful. Thank you.
