The Vilkas in War Thunder is a Lithuanian Light Tank that has a 30mm Bushmaster Cannon and Spike Missiles.
The Vilkas is definitely a weird looking tank. It's actually very fast and the cannon is ok. The problem is the battle rating and the fact that Spikes are absolutely useless.
Spike Missiles need a bit of a buff. Probably. Maybe not! :)

The model doesn't even seem to be finished since the rocket launcher doesn't close while reloading.
Maybe they are loaded by hand from the outside an it closes only if not in use.

Problem with SPIKES is that IRL they have both direct and indirect fire modes. Would be nice if Gaijin lets swap on the fly.
That would take effort, thought, and some measure of technical skill. Not Gaijin's forte.
Same thing with hellfires
and they also top attack IRL, in game they just hit straight on. The spike SR (short range) will just hit the side of vehicles the LR that the vilkas or kf41 have are supposed to fly up in the air and then slam down on a vehicle from a very steep angle. Conveniently that would hurt russian tanks the most as they have a big ol' ammo carrousel right under the roof.
@@MyWaifuNow yeah but it doesn't even slam straight down, it is always weirdly angled, the charge generates little to no splinters which makes no sense. The core problem isn't the bad spikes tho, no it is the selection of the vehicle itself, it makes no sense to add vehicle which carries a missile that is effective on a range of 350 meters, when most battles are on much shorter distances, because of the general gameplay, maps and vehicle pool. Rather choosing a different vehicle with different weapon selection (or fixing the missile to be useful, can go away from reality like russian tanks lol ) or anything else would have been much smarter and better
They're incompetent when it comes to implementing Western ammunition.

Well, it’s not like we have any recent video evidence that Javelins are capable of taking out Russian and Soviet tanks, so it would be entirely up to them to estimate how it would fare against Russian ERA.

honestly the first vehicle in game that got fire and forget ground to ground missiles was a chinese event tank and they are also absolutely fucking useless there so it was pretty clear early on that the missiles on the Vilkas are going to be shit

@@oz314 the Azerbaijanis destroyed about 50 T72s with Spikes during the 2nd Nagorno-Karabakh War.
So they are confirmed effective against T72B, T72AV and T72 "Ural".

Odd, how could you murder a child Wiesel without any remorse ( 14:45 ). To be fair tho, the Vilkas is one of the tallest vehicles in top tier War Thunder, especially compared to the Wiesel, so i get why you wouldn't have seen him lmao. Great video as always!

At 4:16 he kills someone with the cannon and then after he dies he gets the spike kill. I don't think he got 2 spike kills.

Vilkas is the Lithuanian name for the german GTK Boxer. Oddly the Vilkas in WT has a german speaking crew. Guess they must have imported both the Vilkas and the crew from Germany 😅
From what I know the Vilkas (which means wolf) is a chassis of German origin with an indigenous turret. But yeah it’s kinda sad that crew’s voices are not in Lithuanian. I don’t really know wt that much so is it common that the foreign voices aren’t implemented or is this an exception?

Pretty realistic, the germans will probably buy some back since the Puma still sucks IRL with its barrel harmonic issues and the Marders they had in working order are now rusting in ukrainian fields😂

i usually use the spike's for helies as it's a fun slow killer :) but a direct and indirect fire mode would be a welcome improvement.
fun fact first spike kill i got was a IL 2. . . yes an actual mad lad brought a IL 2 to do bomb runs and got a facial of hot spike thru his engine xD
When a top down 600mm pen missile is a "Hit" on a T72 turret top, you know its time to abandon the vehicle
I found the spike to be pretty consistent chopper killers. Slow, takes abit to hit but I've hit all I've launched at. They also never seemed to try and evade so I don't know if they get a warning signal from spikes.
They do get a warning in the last few seconds. But the average heli pilot aint really smart (coming from a French tiger player), so they think it's a SAM and sticking to the ground is going to work. And, to be fair, because the spike is so slow, its fairly manoeuvrable and hard to evade without enough altitude to spare

@@avay8726 probably because they are to far and to high. At long distances the if the heli is very high, the missile will have to climb and have low maneuverability

It was know for being as deadly as the hellfire, while being self guiding and being able to absolutely delete targets from 3 1/2KM away without issue!

As someone who survived the KF41, I knew it was absolutely over for this tank.
As long as you fire them from 500meters out or more the missiles seem to work reasonably well. I routinely get 2 kills with spikes per game. They're not perfect but theyre useful..
I think there's bug right now that when it gets shot into turret and detonates ammo it blows out even the ammo that's in the hull that crew is sitting on
See the most fun you can have with the villas, is shooting out the ammunition and leaving them with no bullets. Very entertaining, makes them very, very angry
I think that the Vilkas is a great tank but its standing in the shadow of the Puma, there are two things that I thing are good its is speed and hight but the hight is kind of counterproductive in some situations, I think it will be more of a collectors item.

The BMPs 30mm spall like a 105mm apds with double the rate of fire... its insane. Yet the bushmaster weapon systems are not even comparable and are usually at higher BRs.
The fucking 2S38 is at a lower BR than this thing.....

😂 I love this IFV! Idk how but with the 81mm pen apds I killed a m1a1 from the front with a few shots also the spikes work great on helicopters and camping lights!

I would _love_ the vilkas so much more than I do if the round actually spalled (or something), and if spikes worked half the time ive used them. I usually send two spikes for one tank and still rarely get a kill on them. Usually gets the breach or barrel if it hits at all.

Glad he mentions its a bad one, cuz I didn't bother going for the thing and the French Pizza slice isn't that much better since it gets crapped on in that BR range and specially if you are spading it.

The failed scout on the bmp is probably due to elevation and scouting. Because it was at a lower elevation, the scouting struggles with it. as compared to the ags you scouted later which was on level ground with you.
I tend to aim just below the enemy tracks when scouting from a higher place, it usually results in a successful scout.
@ 8:20 I've noticed that more often lately now too. Not sure if something during one of the recent updates or what. I've had my cross hairs curly on someone and get nothing. Then I've also scouted thru walls... Gaijin logic I guess? 🤨

I actually love it and the spike. Especially in 10.3
I've been jonsing for OddBawz vids.
The visas is very good great support wheeled vehicle. Fast good for flanking. The missile has to be used on targets at least 300m away to hit accurately and since the atgm is slow if you are able to immobilize your enemy it’s going to hit well. Can’t just sling spikes expecting them to splash every time. Used in the right situation they are deadly. Also I’d carry an HE belt to deal with helicopters much easier.
Spike missiles are actually up there among the best ATGMs in reality. Best used as a top down attack missile which is what it really is about.
After regrettably learning about "backshots", hearing about getting shot in the back has not been the same again. 😂

Hey Odd could you play the Challenger mk2? Its the first challeger the brits get and its awesome!
They work about as well as the Italian ones. Yet no one seems to complain about them. The only half decent ones are on the Freccia since it can fire straight forward and that usually never happens or you take out one crew member or the ERA eats the missile even though it’s a tandem warhead.
i heard they recently got a buff a day or 2 ago where they actually hit the target for once
I would love to see CV90 Mk.V when gaijin is making more vehicles with Spikes-LR/MR because it doesnt only have Spikes, it also have Iron fist APS like Challenger Black Night and it would be absolutely awesome... I know it would be similar to KF41 but sweeden doesnt have much ATGM carriers (Pvrbv 551, Udes 33 and 2 BILL carriers) and thats all i can remember i dont count SPAA with SAMs and Barrel launched ATGM like T 80 U or CV90s with Falaricks... And im not sweedish main

This thing will definitely suffer from what i call "Marderitis", a tragic case where your unmanned turret will fly off if any shrapnel touches your ammo belt.
In seriousness though, ive always hated that the 20mm belt in the Marder can cause a cook off when getting hit. Defeats the entire point of the turrent being unmanned and kinda feels like a bit of bs. Idk if that would actually happen with 20mm or not but still.

So ridiculous. The Spike has proven itself in combat as one of if not the best ATGM on earth. Gaijin just doesn’t want to admit that it’s considerably better than Russian ATGMs. Pathetic.
If you think about it, nearly all of Gaijin's execs and leads are Russian or have Russian family members living in Russia. You know how Russia has traditionally had issues with people throwing themselves out of barred windows without breaking said window when they say something the Russian Government doesn't like.

This is exactly why I grinded for the flanker instead of the f15, I know gaijin is going to make the aim-120s laughably bad compared to the r-77s
From my experience Spikes only really get kills when YOU are already dead.
I think this is because the player you shoot at doesn’t expect the missile to still be guided and turns to shoot or do something else than looking straight at your now dead body -> hitting center mass in side usually downwards angle hitting ammo.
But when you are alive they are still looking in your direction and you will most of the time hit the barrel or breach.
I had fun with the vilkas so far, it ain’t bad
As long as you dont center your gameplay around the Spikes, its a fine tank. Plays like a VBC or similar light scout IFV. Plenty of empty space so your crew just watches the APFSDS fly through. I'd just fire off Spikes at every random opportunity, if they kill its fine, if they dont its ok. At least they're pretty reliable against heli cancer so that alone makes the Vilkas an A+ tier tank in my book. Now if only the PUMA would get spikes too (and a BR increase to 11.0) ...

Ground out the SU25 with R73s and realized I’d rather just spend 20$ to pick it up on marketplace than be frustrated with this game for an extra 20 hours to grind points

2:28 That's the thing though, Russia doesn't have a Spike equivalent. Their only NLOS missile is the LMUR, which is helicopter-launched and its closest ewuivalent is probably the Spike NLOS, so it's definitely not something that can be added into the game.

They really need to address the Spike missiles. They're so underpowered in game. IRL they're great missiles and should pretty much knock out any tank they hit. Doesn't make sense that the Vilkas is at the BR it's at considering how bad they perform.

Did they improve the spikes since this video? Almost every spike i shoot is a kill. So i rack up 3 or 4 kills with the spikes then go reload the spikes at a cap point lol.

The QN506 is actually a strong support vehicle that has aged like fine wine. Has a valid place in my 11.7 lineup. No way I'd sell it for a KV220.

Idk if I’d say it’s crap, it’s just really situational and hard to use well. I don’t really use the spikes against tanks but instead to smack helis out of the air before they can do too much damage to the team, but the main gun is really lackluster. I tend to have to dump 20-30 rounds of APFSDS into the side of MBTs to get kills way too often, and the APDS rounds are borderline unusable which makes the stock grind horrible

i'm not sure if you sufficiently adapt your playstyle to the vehicle. When you launch a spike, it might not be the best to spray the autocannon at the target to make it take cover. When you see that you're locking a dead tank, just don't fire. If it doesn't play like an MBT, it won't be great when you try to use it that way.
Oh they gave it two reloads for the spikes? That's something, test driving it a week ago it only had 2.
As for anti air, the spikes won't loft high enough to get helicopters at a significant distance despite the '20 KM' range it boasts, and if they do even basic moves it can throw the missile's tracking right off. If it were the QN506, it would kill. The spikes? Garbage.
And IRL the spike is actually pretty good. You could say it's an israeli variant of the javelin. My country uses it and I fired a couple in weapon familiarization training.
Now I grinded this because why not, now the thing is, my top german vehicle is 6.0
