I found this recipe in the Nashville paper over 40 years ago and still making it to this day. It is my families favorite.
I remember that Southern Living issue. My grandmother made the Hummingbird Cake from that recipe and it continues to be a family tradition at Thanksgiving and Christmas every year.
My grandmother always made hummingbird cake as I was growing up! When my husband and I were dating, I remember asking him if he had ever had hummingbird cake. He said that he had NOT! I thought, "who hasn't had hummingbird cake in the south?" He tried it and loved it! He loved it so much (and I of course loved it so much) that we chose it to be one of our wedding cake tiers. I live in tte UK and every year my daughter chooses the birthday cake she would like me to bake and one year she chose this one and even now all these years later we still remember how delicious it was. I think it's about time to make it again.

I know this was written 2 years ago but I wanted to say that they didn't say this woman invented the cake they said she submitted the recipe.
I don't think there's a person in the south who hasn't had a piece of this cake. Bless her for submitting it to the magazine all those years ago.
This video should be taken down until more research is done in regards to the cakes actual origin.

But how did it get its name? My Aunt called it "Sweedish Nut Cake" ?!

I read that this cake was originally called doctor bird cake and originated in Jamaica.
This was probably invented by a black woman in the south.She just got the credit for it as always.
Was invented is the 60s in jamaica, hence the name hummingbird cake the national bird of jamaica.
