My girlfriend and I worked the midnight shift at Canada Post in the 1970s. We had 2 channels. On our days off we were awake odd hours and had the choice of a religious channel or this show. It was an easy choice... the hilarious house of frightenstein. I am watching this 50 years later and must say it still makes us laugh. I married my goulfriend.
I used to wake up at 5am to watch this in the late 70s. Lots of corny and campy humor with some educational segments interlaced. Television needs a resurgence of things like this.
Absolutely!! I can't confirm but Wikipedia claims Professor Julius Sumner Miller worked with Einstein. My Aussie bro in law confirms he also hosted a science based educational show "Why is it so?" (One of his catchphrases) Professor is a throwback to a time when teachers were valued because as he said "In some of these episodes already filmed you may hear me use language of an elevated sort. Words like phrases like 'Modus Operandi' and the impression may be got... That this is too much for children. But I have always been of the philosophy that... My singular purpose is to MAKE EVERYONE REACH! And thus their brains are stretched.. And their minds are moved and their spirit touched..."
I have to tell the Vincent Price story. He came to do all his bits in a day maybe two. The crew loved him who wouldn't. So the legend, Vincent Price hops in a taxi grabs two 24 cases of beer comes back and shoots the shit with the CHCH crew. Gotta dig deep to find anyone with bad words about Vincent Price.
I used to get up at 6AM on Saturdays to watch it in the early 80s, myself. This show is responsible for much of my sense of humour, as well as my love of horror/monsters.
I grew up in 70s Chicago. As an adult, for years I’ve wondered about an odd “monster” show I watched back then on Channel 44. From what I recalled, I loved it. It had a relatively short run in Chicago. I had random, faded memories of it. I was almost thinking it was some sort of figment of my imagination, or an amalgam of various cloudy childhood TV memories. What a great day this is! I finally found it! I’m experiencing a flood of wonderful memories. This show is even better than I remembered. Pure Canadian genius! Love, love, love this! And I’m in my 50s now.
I was raised on this show, I watched every Saturday morning religiously, and i still believe it was the wolf man and spinning classic rock tunes against that psyched out background that got me into Rock n Roll. From beginning to end a true classic! Thank you for sharing the great memories.
As a child of the 70's, i watched this show every week. I remember when the Librarian would come on , i would jump into my Mom's lap because he scared the sh** out of me!! Billy Van was so talented! It's a shame he didn't become much more successful in Hollywood.
This and Today's Special in the 80s hold an incredible place in my heart. Makes me feel like a kid again. We were blessed with such wonderful writing and acting!
Holy shit. I remember watching this as a child in the 80’s. what a trip. The core memories this brought back are hard to explain. I remember….but I don’t. Hard to explain.
My mom grew up in the 70s (born in ‘69) and loved this show. In the early 2000s, some channel in Ontario was doing reruns of HHoF - that was how I learned how to record TV episodes on VHS, which was a skill that remained useful for about 5 years after I learned it. What a great show!
I remember being a kid in the late 80s discovering this on weekend mornings and being obsessed. The humour and some of the jokes went over my head but I loved it. Nice to see it again.
My brothers used to torture me with this show every Saturday morning, and my mom would come running out of the bedroom with hairbrushes. I was only 3 years old.
45:00 The trippy psychedelic effects are created with "video feedback" , pointing a video camera at its own monitor with simple overlaid graphics, and moving and tilting the camera around.
I have tried to think of the name of this show for decades! I stumbled upon this clip after watching a Svengoolie clip. Wow. Memories of the 70's. Thanks for posting it.
I remember watching reruns of this in the early 80's in Toronto (on CityTV?) Had completely forgotten about it until I stumbled upon it again here on youtube! Man, the memories are rushing back in!
Wow, I don't remember this as a whole but just snippets. I may have never seen an entire episode. Its so trippy and obviously has some sub stories. TYFS
Someone who helped put together Michael Jackson's "Thriller" must have watched this at some point, because Vincent Price's rap here can easily be placed right within "Thriller." Great show. I actually watched this on Channel 61 in Philly back in the mid-1980's.
GRAMMAR SLAMMER HAMMER! Never forgot that, though I had long forgotten where it came from. When I asked on some forum years ago, and was told "Horrible House of Frightenstein"; I remembered that name too. (Forgot Vincent Price was in it, though). Also vaguely remembered the "Sloth". (Poor Igor!)
Way ahead of it's time with an actor virtuoso and great imagination. How the hell did they get Vincent Price. What a coup. at age six far better than Sesame Street
What can I say about this show it was awesome it brings back a lot of memories and to think that Billy van played all mostly all those characters that took him a long time to get made up and all those characters I was surprised when somebody told me what characters he played and I want wow how can you be all those characters while he was he wasn't Igor he wasn't the professor any wasn't the hippie Superman any wasn't the little short Dracula you go and you watch the show on RUclips and you find out who he was ooga booga in Zany Zoo . That was really awesome so thanks for putting it on RUclips they should do more put more episodes on there so thanks
Oh gosh, this must be the odd Vincent Price show I watched as a child. I remember very little of it.I do recall Price reciting poetry. Seeing it here I wonder why on earth I watched it!
This was syndicated in the late 70s on WNEW, channel 5 here in New York.(Now WNYW/Fox 5). I thought the show was pretty funny in a corny way. Surprisingly, no one I talk to remembers this show..
When i was young, i had a nightmare about the witch chasing me around with her broom. But her broom had a knife attached to the end and she was cutting the shit out of me. Then she started chasing me around with a bottle of hydrogen peroxide..
My girlfriend and I worked the midnight shift at Canada Post in the 1970s. We had 2 channels. On our days off we were awake odd hours and had the choice of a religious channel or this show. Thats a cool story man. .:)
Staring at a wall is more entertaining than a religious channel.
"goulfriend" ... lol
I never knew it was made in Hamilton! So close to home! I used to watch this as a kid. Probably re-runs.
This was immensely popular in Canada and abroad. Billy Van was genius.
I used to wake up at 5am to watch this in the late 70s. Lots of corny and campy humor with some educational segments interlaced. Television needs a resurgence of things like this.

I would set my wind up clock to see it. None of my friends got it ...
Ditto! Dad would be up for his shift & I'd watch this weird ass show

It was freaky, great and fun.
As a child of the 70's, i watched this show every week. I remember when the Librarian would come on , i would jump into my Mom's lap because he scared the sh** out of me!! Billy Van was so talented! It's a shame he didn't become much more successful in Hollywood.

Oh man, I was OBSESSED with this show! Seeing it over 30 years later brought back memories I didn’t realize existed. What an absolute treasure!
My mom grew up in the 70s (born in ‘69) and loved this show. In the early 2000s, some channel in Ontario was doing reruns of HHoF - that was how I learned how to record TV episodes on VHS, which was a skill that remained useful for about 5 years after I learned it. What a great show!

Grew up on this show❤ from Toronto I made sure I got up early to watch it. It was home for me such memories.
Why did the TV station where I grew up have to show this show exactly before school started in the morning and make me late for school, dammit!
"My Grammar was a very nice lady." First time seeing this - i was about 5 years too young to catch it. Reminds me a bit of SCTV. Love it.
The Professor was always my favourite part of the show.

This series was created in Hamilton Canada.
This is from 1971. But Vincent Price was involved with Thriller, which brings the comment thread or aesthetic.
Love it nuff said
One of the benefits of growing up in Buffalo was getting CHCH out of Hamilton. Loved this show in the 70's. Forgot all about it until today.
I love this show before I get the had to go to school in the morning we got to watch this show here in Canada
I use to watch this show - brings back great memories - the librarian use to scare me
Our family watched this in black and white until about 1976. When we saw it in color we were blown away.

Holy nostalgia, Igor!
Way ahead of it's time with an actor virtuoso and great imagination. How the hell did they get Vincent Price. What a coup. at age six far better than Sesame Street
As a bad poet to boot!

When Cinemassacre did a video about this show, I swear it looks familiar! Maybe I saw it as a young child in the late 70s or early 80s
The vampire looks like Liza Minnelli

So much of this is just Billy Van trying to fill time. that is a big part of the fun of it.

1. Freak out in the garden
This is one of those shows that just stood out. It was repetitive and bad in a good way. Good to see it again.
This was syndicated in the late 70s on WNEW, channel 5 here in New York.(Now WNYW/Fox 5). I thought the show was pretty funny in a corny way. Surprisingly, no one I talk to remembers this show..
I once found this show scary!

Freakin Awesome!
Breakfast time

I have an idea for a real horror movie based on this show.
Love the wowie power comment.
Envious but I was a child so everything was missed context, gen x possibly not missed...
When i was young, i had a nightmare about the witch chasing me around with her broom. But her broom had a knife attached to the end and she was cutting the shit out of me. Then she started chasing me around with a bottle of hydrogen peroxide..
