Guitaristas offers the most trustworthy in depth reviews on RUclips. Not paid, he buys the many guitars demoed.on his channel. Routinely admits he doesn't know it all advocating we do our own research to supplement his findings. Not hyped to boost sales, he is very thorough both in his praises & criticisms. Like most of us, guitars are his passion & it shines with every reviews. Honesty, integrity & love of music binds musicians together. Isn't that why we got into this in the first place? Well done & wishing you the best! Cheers!

The reasoning behind the frequensator is to lessen the tension of the thicker strings and give a more balanced feeling tension across all the strings.

I believe the increased length of the lower strings increases the tension on those strings, the opposite of the comment. But that does result in a more balanced feel.

    • @darwinsaye

David Rothberg Yes, you’re right. I was mixing up string length physics with the shallow break angle of trapeze tailpieces vs stop bars, which does give a more slinky feel.

I respect a lot of the YT guitar community but this channel has become a real favorite because they feature guitars most of us can likely play! Seeing some Murphy Lab Custom Shop Les Paul or a Custom Shop Strat handmade by Todd Krause or somebody is cool, but 98.5% of us won't be picking one up without a new bank loan, second mortgage or scrimping for a few years and we especially won't be taking it down to the pub gig on Friday. Guitaristas channel showcases and really demos stuff we can actually use. Great guitar, great channel.

Beautiful looking guitar and as you comment its a genuine reissue and not a copy. Epiphone made a number of guitars in the 60's that were distinctive enough to be recognisable compared with their Gibson stablemates. You've already mentioned the Sheraton, Casino and Riviera, but there was also the Rivioli, Excellente, Frontier and Texan to name but a few others. The Epi 60's guitars made at the Kalamazoo factory are as sought after as the Gibson's made there and command very similar prices. At that time Epiphone quality was on a par with Gibson even though their retail price was slightly cheaper. And of course the fact that the Beatles used Epiphones means there can be no bigger ringing endorsement for the brand. I think Epiphone are starting to get close now to the original Kalamazoo 60's quality before Gibson gave up on the brand and outsourced Epiphone to SE Asia factories in the 70's and the quality suffered because of that for a long time.

Another comment but just finished watching it through, I'm really glad you liked it. It's definitely it's own thing, as is the Casino, but out of the 3 (Sheraton/Riviera/Casino) I personally think it's the coolest one. The Riviera is absolutely a 335 killer. I wanted a 335 badly in 1972, but I couldn’t afford one. Right next to the 335s on the wall at my favorite guitar store in Fullerton California was an old(1967) Riviera, with case, for $350. The 335s were all around a grand. So, I bought the Epiphone, and plugged it into my old Twin Reverb, and never looked back. It was my main gigging guitar for many years. The mini hb pickups, the neck profile, everything about it was just superb. I’d love to try one of these new ones, made in China. Good review man. My old Riviera was stolen from me in Tucson Arizona, and I’ve never seen one just like it again, made by Gibson in Kalamazoo. I still miss it after almost 30 years.

As usual another outstanding review, and a typically splendid 24 minutes of content. Personally, I wish each of your videos lasted longer, maybe with another effect or amp setting or something, mainly because I so enjoy listening to your detailed, thoughtful and honest opinions of the instruments. Love the guitar too, lol. Great price for this pretty instrument; Epiphone continues to be killing it so much over the past couple of years. Your so thorough and enjoyably good at what you are doing; I literally have no other "channel" or podcast or TV program or whatever which I look forward to more than watching each of your videos as they come out. I love sitting back and listening/watching so much, either with a coffee or a cold one, dependent on the time of day. Thank you for continuing, and please don't stop! Cheers mate, from California!

Colin left out a major use of the Riviera. On RUclips, find the 1969 video for King Harvest Has Surely Come by The Band to see Robbie Robertson playing one of these with a Bigsby vibrato. I thought it was a Telecaster until I saw the video. That’s my favorite album, and I don’t know what other songs he may have used it on. I searched for one in Royal Tan and finally found one (most are Burgundy). I’ve had it for about 6 months and probable play it more than my PRS 594 Hollowbody (which I also love) which costs 5-6 times more. Great underrated guitar!

I know I'm a little late to the party but I've just bought me one of these after lots of YT video "research" and the sounds you got out of this guitar played quite a mayor role in my decision. I have nothing but gratitude for you convincing me to get it, Sir!
A friend of mine had the "Mourning In The Morning" album by Otis Rush. He's pictured on the cover with a sunburst Riviera (as I found out after doing quite some research). One of my favourite Blues/R&B records. I always liked the tone he had on that record, a bit Gibson-like but with more "wire", a bit glassier albeit with the same sustain and not thin by any means.
Of course this is not a vintage one but it keeps that slightly acoustic ring - probably because of the return to the Riviera's original design. When rolling off the treble just a bit it sounds almost like a full humbucker. With it all the way up it's like a different kind of "twang", especially on the bridge pickup, but unlike a Gretsch or Tele. It's a thing of it's own and I couldn't be happier now that I've used it playing soul, funk, blues and rock'n'roll, clean and overdriven, rhythm and leads (great sustain, by the way!) Thanks again for your effort!

Been a Epi fan since the early 70’s having bought a six and twelve string acoustics that were coming out of Japan. Am old ES335 Natural with maple neck, am told it was a tribute to 70’s 335, don’t know how true that is. That one now has Gibson Burstbucker Pros fitted. Also have an EPi EB3 bass which is fab.

Agree about the mini humbuckers. They sound like an in between of the HB and P90's .. Pretty jangly for HB pickups.. I find LPs with the burstbuckers won't sound muddy with gain but the 498T tends to unless you crank up the treble and mid range of the amp.. It's a beautiful versatile guitar..

Nice review. Had one in cherry red for about 11years. I think mine was when Epiphone brought in their first batch from China it says "Limited Edition Custom Shop" on the head stock. Fantastic guitar. Sounds great recorded. I think I paid under 400 UK for it new. I play it almost every day and I'm never selling it. I have reversed the "frequensator' tail piece on mine as I found that the longer low strings were too bassey with it in the stock config. The comparison video would be a great idea.

Beautiful guitar and sounds great! As a play at home for my own enjoyment kind of player, I have become a bit of an Epiphone fanboy in the last couple of years. What really turned me into that direction has been the Joe Bonamassa Epiphone signature guitars, I have the Amos, the Norm Burst, the 355, the Black Beauty and now the Lazarus which should be here next week. Based the great experience I have had with those guitars, I also bought my son an SG Standard 60's model and that has been a wonderful guitar as well. Thru personal experience I have been much happier with the top end Epiphones that any of the similarly priced or lower end Gibson guitars I have purchased. Just my experience of course, others may disagree. They just seem to be right blend of playability and tone for my level of playing. The pricing allows for me to have more guitars and variety. As always, thanks for sharing....I might have to add this Sheraton to the list along with the SG Custom. Cheers...Bill

Your "Tone" strumming exercises made it ring like a bell! Nice playing, man. They have a boatload at Sweetwater for $699.99 each. Fancy a red one myself. I like Mini-Humbuckers but never liked them on the original Firebirds, although EC's Firebird 1 was nice. I believe he used it for the solo on "Badge" (studio recording). I know he used it on Martha Velez's "Fiends and Angels" 'cos I saw him walking out of Broadhurst Gardens as I was going in (no personal Guitar techs then).. Later that evening I slipped into the Control Room where Mike Vernon was producing ( Varnell on the knobs). Just to hear her tracking the lead vocal to "I'm Gonna' Leave You" - staggering voice she had. Was in the first version of "Hair" on Broadway but I digress.... Later, mate! Pete.

Hey Collin have you ever done a comparison with a Gibson 335 and the inspired by Gibson Epiphone 335. If you have maybe I missed it. But I’d love to hear your opinion on the “inspired by Gibson” sort of title that they gave the Epi 335s. I am having some action troubles with the two Epi 335‘s that I just recently bought. After I set the action where I like a day later it gets bad. So what does inspired by Gibson really mean? That the guys on the production line got inspired? Do they use similar wood? Are they giving them Mickey Mouse ears? Love to hear your opinion on all of this. I am thoroughly enjoying your RUclips channel and I have learned a great deal so thank you?
