My Casino is my best friend! It just plays so nicely, feels so good. It feels alive. So much resonance. That frewquensator tailpiece on the Riviera looks really cool, how it's split like that. I think it has something to do with providing more string tension for a more stable tone.
Awesome video, as always! I always loved the sound of a 335, but it was always just too large for me to handle comfortably. In 2018 I ended up getting an Epiphone ES 339 (humbucker version). It is a monster guitar- probably the best sounding guitar in my collection! Maybe for part two you could throw a 339 in the mix and see how it stacks up against the full sized guitars?
@@theguitaristas I’d love to see an episode (or series) featuring the 339! It’s a great guitar. It’s got that semi-hollow body sound and mojo but has some Les Paul vibes going for it as well. And it can cover just about any style you throw at it!
Absolutely! While watching and listening to this, I kept eyeing my ES-339 and my Riviera. I have bunch of other guitars too, but if I had to pick just one, I think it would be the ES-339. Maybe the Les Paul Jr.
Budget guitars have come such a long way omg back when I started playing it was catalogue guitars and they were bad I would of loved any of these to learn on , in a mix any of these do the job
Really like and appreciate your work. I have had a Casino for about a year. All the guys who can actually play guitars and I mean play, rave about the Epiphone Casino worn in green drab. I very recently got an Epiphone inspired by Gibson 335 in cherry red another really nice bit of kit but much heavier than the Casino chunkier neck with a beautiful finish. Both played well straight from the box and you are quite right that they have different tonal qualities. The finishes are different. 335 costs about £200 more but it's great as is the Casino. Ideal for beginners
Great video. I loved the way you showcased all 4 personalities on these guitars. Their all so unique sounding considering they’re all coming off basically the same foundation. I’d love to hear the Epiphone Nick Valensi Riviera with the P100 pickups thrown in this mix as well. Keep up the good work. You’ve got yourself a new subscriber here!
Fantastic video mate. I've recently subscribed and love working my way slowly through your videos. This one is fantastic. I had a Korean Casino in the 90s and sold it as I couldn't get on with the very thin neck. However I need a semi in my life to cover off my Oasis vibes. I think a Riviera needs to be heading my way. Thanks for taking the time out to make the best comparison videos out there. Cheers. Mark
How about the ibanez semi hollow range. Pretty sure they have a model in the price range, and they have a fairly good pedigree with their semi hollows, a lot of the jazz boys played an ibanez.
It is always a good day when I get to watch one of your videos. Also, your playing isn't sloppy, man, it's great and you feel it, so we feel it too. Keep up the amazing work and thank you so much.
I have my top two out of this group picked out easily. For me the Red 335 is my top pick because of its beautiful sound and versatility. I would buy that from you right now. #2) is the Sheraton with its versatility while also having that iconic rockers sound. To be truthful, you are the one that has me looking for an Epiphone Sheraton II PRO in music stores near me to play before I buy. My problem is my nostalgic heart has me wanting a great sounding cherry red 335 from when my grandfather hired a musician to come play for the family as a Christmas present to us all. I fell in love with that guitar & have always wanted one.
So far the Casino has the best sound for me. For me I favor hollow body with P90s, had a double cut Tele semi hollow body with P90s which sounded great. My complaint I felt like I had to hold the neck up constantly. Also love the Epi's green color.
Second time I’ve watched this Last time because I’d just bought a Casino This time because I’ve just bought an as new Riviera for half price. 😮 As Colin’s Guitaristas is my go-to electric guitar reviewer, just reminding myself of my good fortune. PS: another benefit of these videos is I don’t have to play my Pink Floyd vinyl - just listen to Colin’s playing ❤
I still have my original Gibson ES-335, which I bought brand new in 1964, excellent video, plenty of nice clean sounds, and really good to hear you say the Casino was based on a 330 and not a 335, love Mr. Not quite as Grumpy today.
They all sound great in their own way, especially with a talented guitar player playing through them, but they all have a different timbre. I have my preferences, which lean towards the P-90 and mini-humbucker pickups, rather than the full-sized humbuckers. I prefer hollow to semi-hollow guitars, which gives the Casino an advantage, and P-90 pickups on hollow body guitars is perhaps my favorite tone, but mini-humbuckers on hollow body guitars is another favorite. John Lee Hooker's favorite was a "Blondie" Zephyr, although he was seen with a Riviera or Sheraton too. Another Epiphone hollow body with mini-humbuckers is the "Sorrento", an ES-125T type guitar, but with a longer scale length. Other Chicago blues cats besides John Lee Hooker were drawn to the mini-humbucker equipped semi-hollow Rivieras, Sheratons, or hollow Zephyr or Sorrento. The brighter sound cuts through a mix better than full-sized humbuckers, and the lows are tighter, with a more scooped sound than P-90 pickups. That was an interesting and informative comparison video, and nice playing too - thank you sir. Cheers!
Hey David thanks for the kind words that’s appreciated! I’m not that familiar with then zephyr or sorrento so this is leading me to do some research... I like the es125 style a lot so perhaps can do something along those lines. Cheers! 😎👍
I really dig your videos. You’re enjoyable to listen to. You are an excellent player and I like that you include a bunch of the specs and look inside some of the guitars. Really great channel you have hear and easy to see your enthusiasm for guitar.
Colin, I'm a new subscriber, these videos are something special - no nonsense or bullshit. The tone on those MHB on that Riviera is something else, I just picked one up from Rich Tone today in Sheffield, well, the P93 3x p90 version - Pick one up and give it a review! - anyway, i'm riveted to your vids now :) cheers mate.
Thanks for another solid vid! I own a 335 and a Stealth. I like the 335 but love the Stealth. Got serious GaS for a Casino. It's on the list! Someone from Epiphone needs to send you a commission check.
The Casino is the guitar I wish I'd got first as a beginner. The fact that its hollow body delivers a bedroom friendly acoustic volume means that that it can be snatched up and played on the slightest whim, whereas the Les Paul copy I chose instead needed to be plugged in and switched on in order to sound "good" but even then all my mistakes and crappy tones inhibited me from broadcasting through my Peavey Rage amp when there was anyone in the house. The Casino Coupe I have now is loud enough acoustically to be heard but not so loud as to disturb.
Another excellent Video! About thirty years ago I bought a new The Heritage H535 similar to a Gibson ES335 but I never bonded with it and traded it for something else. Changed the stock Schaller pickups to Duncan 59s but it just did not do it for me. I am a much better player now and maybe I would like it. These Epiphones are something I might consider. I would like to see a review of a Deangelico or Ibanez Artcore in this price range.
It may be worth looking at the Vintage VSA500, It comes in at £429~£489 (list, depending on finish), so it's comparable with the others price-wise. It strays slightly from the realm of being a direct 335 copy because of its offset body shape. I picked one up a couple of years ago (I was comparing it to an Epiphone Dot at the time), and I think it does well at the price point. My only criticism was that the Wilkinson pickups were quite microphonic... I re-potted them and they were fine. It was probably just a QC fail... but I now know it's easy to re-pot humbuckers! Also, it may be nice to see a British Chinese guitar instead of all American Chinese guitars :)
Nice video! I would like to see such a comparison of the smaller Epiphone hollow bodies -- the 339 vs the Casino Coupe vs the Wildkat vs the Uptown Kat.
I've watched part 1 & part 2 so many times now. Thank you for the really insightful breakdown. Would it be too much to ask for a part 3- something that isn't a 335 derivative? Perhaps a PRS Hollowbody Piezo SE, Hagstroms, Reverends? No harm asking😊
I can tell you the PRS SE Hollowbody piezo is a whole different animal, honestly. It's an excellent guitar but it plays and sounds very different to a 335. The secret to the prs is using one jack to an acoustic amp while humbuckers in another standard or high gain amp. The 335 has more bark/bite and is a bit more dynamic than the prs without the piezo in use. But man, a little piezo blended in the neck humbucker with some gain on the prs is a near perfect studio tone.
@@steves12strings Thanks for the rundown, as i suspected the PRS would be really different, great to have some choices that aren't derivatives of the 335, as great as that platform is. Sounds like i'll have to factor in an acoustic amp if i ever break down and go for the PRS!🙃
I'm a new subscriber. Only watched your Casino video and now this one. I've been wanting the Casino worn in that olive drab. That's why I stumbled upon your Casino video. Glad I did. I'm enjoying your demos. This demo supports my thoughts on the Casino. I like the 335, but I want that lightweight hollowbody. Thanks you and cheers from Detroit.
Just ordered the riviera. It looks stunning. The mini humbuckers give that top end that will cut through in the mix of my band. Plus having the centre block running through it will help with feedback. I do like the royal tan colour but ordered it in sparkling burgundy. It’s like a deep wine colour. And I think is better than the royal tan. Your review of the riviera and this comparison video made my mind up. Your honesty and demonstrations are second to none. No endorsements or paid reviews etc. once it arrives and I’ve had a bit of time with it will come back and let you know how I got on. Keep up the good work. It’s one of the highlights of my week.
Excellent comparison and a nice selection of material being played. It's great to hear a comparison that isn't just chugging on the low strings with heavy distortion.
Thanks for a great video, take care. I did own a 1966 Gibson ES-335, it was a terrific blues machine, had it for 15 years and I sold it to a friend and a few years later I bought a 2000 Epiphone Dot Deluxe. With a good setup on the Dot Deluxe, the playability is almost there and the sound is good but would benefit from an upgrade consisting of better pots, new wiring, better switches and humbuckers wired with coil splitting. Always KEEP the original parts you swap.
@@theguitaristas I watched a few. It takes a lot to stop me from upgrading guitars. I did a complet refinish of 2 Normand acoustics and 3 electrics, some stained and some solid colors finish, I even refinish a New York Pro Les Paul as a Gold Top (flakes) all those finishes get around 20 coats of a clear polymer. Take care.
I think the Casino is a different animal entirely. For me, it was a great transition & education into electric guitar as an accoustic learner. The feel & sound clean was very familiar, then driven, mastering the feedback & working with the volume & tone knobs was all part of the fun. It then drove me onto 335s & Les Paul's. As I have said before, my 335 was a challenge until I undertook some tweaking, but it has now redeemed itself to the point I feel it does Tele stuff better than my Tele aswell as the rockier stuff. I could be very easily swayed to that Riviera & the Sheraton, however still trying to find a Lazarus. They appear to be like the preverbial rocking horse **** at the moment to get hold of.
I have the Riviera in red sparkle , traded my Tele in for it , what a guitar , but I really like the colour on the one you have . Looking out for a Casino .
Great in-depth review on all these. I got the worn Ebony Casino this year and love it. Owned and played a traditional Sheraton for many years and it’s still one of the best sounding semi-hollows out there. If I could get that stealth with the traditional f-holes that would be a forever guitar for sure.
As a hobbyist lutherer I have owned a Dot, a Sheraton11, Riviera and Casino all MIK models. The best one as standard was the Riviera i.m.o. I changed nothing on it and foolishly moved it on because it was red. The Sheraton had lousy sounding pick ups, not a big expense to buy better pick ups but I just never liked the feel of that guitar so let it go. A blonde Casino I struggled with to make it playable but it was an ongoing struggle, not having a centre block made it very unstable, would need regular setting up, even after a fret level , new nut and Gotoh bridge I let it go. The Blonde Dot, I did some work, new pick ups, not really necessary, Tusq nut, Gotoh bridge, 50's wiring harness, fret level/profile etc, sounds great, plays and feels fantastic and very stable and will not let it go, anybody who plays it wants to buy it. I'm still looking for a blonde Riviera mik. Many years ago I had a Gibson semi from the late 60's, I cannot stress enough the value for money in these Epi's, I can only speak for the Korean models, have no time with a Chinese one.
Btw I remember the "stealth" one as the Gibson "Trini Lopez" model from the mid sixties. They had one in Selmer's window for months - until someone with the necessary dosh realized it was the same as the current (then) ES 335 except with diamond F holes....and actually slightly cheaper 'cos I guess Selmers were trying to move it. Gibson also actually made this model with a deep body (rather like the Barney Kessel signature). Pete - Master of Useless Info
Every video going forward needs a metaphor section with balls and tokes and bohemian uncles - brilliant. I find things to like soundwise with all of these (and again, I could listen to you riff for hours straight), and aesthetically they all push certain buttons. Leaning towards that olive drab (which actually is available in Japan contrary to what I first thought when you reviewed it originally) but the Wolfe stealth intrigues as well. Oh hells bells I'm going to have to hit some Tokyo shops and try them in hand but one of these is in my future that's for sure. No suggestions for next time, but looking forward to it.
Wonderful follow-up to have all four compared and contrasted. Cheers. I'm too new to notice the "sloppiness" in your playing, Colin. Sounded delightful to me, mate.
Having watched this again, after Part 2, I love the colour of that 335. If these were semifinals, you need a final (?) I always hanker for the Casino, especially in that "worn" finish - won't matter if it gets a bit beaten up in the flat. Thanks again for sharing.
“…we’ll try and make it interesting.” WTF? Having discovered your guitaristas RUclips channel, I’m hooked 😮and faithful follower - because you’re - and your ‘show’ ARE so bloody interesting. One can be too modest Colin (not a fault of mine!) 😅
I'm glad you compared these. Strengthened my preference for the Casino above the others. Liked your playing with the feedback! Usually don't get to play loud enough to get enough feedback in my small studio. I'll have to try it loud some time when nobody's home (the neighbour is almost deaf so that's not much of a problem).
"Lead on, Colin to where no picks have been before..." You recorded this around my 70th Birthday. I got severely rat arsed, had a very good meal and when I got home someone gave me a Jazzmaster.... First time I've ever played one, quite good. For the future do you have in the UK the Riviera Custom P93 (same price as the Epi ES 335 BUT with three P90s) or the Casino Coupe (significantly smaller body) and this year au Natural for about the same as the "Drab" Casino. Best, Pete
Hey Pete, happy birthday mate.... Jazzmaster is a cool gift!! 😎👍👍 Yes I've seen the P93 and Coupe so I guess if this series runs they are a definite possibility. Cheers man... PS I hope you're head is better now btw 🤢 you're old enough to know better! 🤣🤣
I would suggest the Sire H7 I believe it’s called. It’s gotten rave reviews and is in the same price range as the Epiphone Sheraton. Ibanez also makes a popular alternative in the adorable category.
I have the Sheraton ii, its a good guitar not great but good, the wiring needed attention right away and the pickups need upgrading, lots of people don’t care for the aircraft carrier size head stock I like it though, all in all for less than $500 US its acceptable. Mine is black with gold hardware which looks really nice. Great video.
I agree, always look forward to this. My son has a Sheraton, always thought it was a bit sprazzi, looks better with the smaller headstock but still a bit flamboyant for my taste. How about Squier Starcaster? Aria TA? Several tasty Ibanezes or even seen Hofner Verithins on Thomanns website? shake it up a bit
Hello Greg , if you ever want to upgrade but don't want to spend to much money , then take a look at the Stanford thinline 30 , great guitars but not overly expensive ( about 1000-1100 euro ) and on par with the eastman/gibson guitars , they come with an full length neck + some fine vintage sounding P 90's pu (there output is about 8-9 k , a lot less hot then the 13-15 k P 90's wich are used in the modern day made in china epiphone casino's ) , check there website or yt vids if you;re interested , greetings , Antoon Hermans .

Cheers man, I like the 339 but that’s a whole different series! 👍😎
Maybe the Les Paul Jr.
ah don't overlook the casino coupe
Budget guitars have come such a long way omg back when I started playing it was catalogue guitars and they were bad I would of loved any of these to learn on , in a mix any of these do the job
I am team Riviera! Your playing Live forever sounds so amazing on this beauty!
The Bohemian uncle analogy is why I watch this show. Class.
😆👍
We’ll, that individual personalities chapter made me want a Riviera even more than I already did. Thanks!
Cheers Dave thanks for the support and sub! 😎👍
Cheers. Mark
Be your best Bonehead with the Riviera, cheers man!
Been waiting for this to come out
How about the ibanez semi hollow range. Pretty sure they have a model in the price range, and they have a fairly good pedigree with their semi hollows, a lot of the jazz boys played an ibanez.
Cheers Alistair, yes the artcore seems a perfect fit.... and believe it or not would be my first ever Ibanez!
@@theguitaristas glad to be of service
It is always a good day when I get to watch one of your videos. Also, your playing isn't sloppy, man, it's great and you feel it, so we feel it too. Keep up the amazing work and thank you so much.
Cheers Sqid! 😎👍
Bought the riviera today what a amazing guitar
Nice takes on some oasis tunes too! Top job ❤️
Cheers James!
That decides it then, have to get all of them
Seriously though, I have an Epiphone dot already - great guitar for the money, but I kind of need a Riviera and probably a Casino too
So far the Casino has the best sound for me. For me I favor hollow body with P90s, had a double cut Tele semi hollow body with P90s which sounded great. My complaint I felt like I had to hold the neck up constantly. Also love the Epi's green color.
Second time I’ve watched this
Last time because I’d just bought a Casino
This time because I’ve just bought an as new Riviera for half price. 😮
As Colin’s Guitaristas is my go-to electric guitar reviewer, just reminding myself of my good fortune.
PS: another benefit of these videos is I don’t have to play my Pink Floyd vinyl - just listen to Colin’s playing ❤
😁🙏
“Rivera…like that bohemian uncle of yours….” I’m definitely gonna subscribe to this channel.
I still have my original Gibson ES-335, which I bought brand new in 1964, excellent video, plenty of nice clean sounds, and really good to hear you say the Casino was based on a 330 and not a 335, love Mr. Not quite as Grumpy today.
Cheers John, I bet your 64 is nice! 👌
Cheers! 😎👍
Colin, Another suggestion.
The Sire Larry Carlton H7.
I've heard some really good things about these.
Cheers. 😊😎🎸
😎👍
My first video on your channel and jeez was this the exact type of video I have been looking for for some time. Excellent work
Nice one glad you found us! 😎👍
Another Great Comparison. Keep them coming my brother.
Thanks Paul 🙏
I really dig your videos. You’re enjoyable to listen to. You are an excellent player and I like that you include a bunch of the specs and look inside some of the guitars. Really great channel you have hear and easy to see your enthusiasm for guitar.
Thanks Hans, that very much appreciated! 🙏☺️👍
Cheers man thanks for the support! 😁👍
Thanks for another solid vid! I own a 335 and a Stealth. I like the 335 but love the Stealth. Got serious GaS for a Casino. It's on the list! Someone from Epiphone needs to send you a commission check.
Cheers man... a great little collection you have growing there! ;)
Best guitar channel on RUclips by far, i thank you sir for your work on putting these videos together.
Cheers Paul, thanks for saying such a nice thing! ☺️🙏 ... can’t possibly be true of course but I’ll take that!! 😆👍
Diggin the Riviera. Those mini humbuckers are a unique sound on hollowbody. Looking for a burgundy one now.
Loving the way your totally not paying tribute to oasis with them beauts! Nice work
Well done, putting those guitars together. Ibanez makes a good semi-hollow. Maybe try the Squire Starcaster. Thank you for your efforts.
Cheers man! 👍 for Starcaster! 😎
Cheers man, looking at both those models and they seem to fit the bill 👍
Cheers Peter, another good suggestion... I can see this turning into a 5 part series! 😆👍
Revelation also do a 335 style guitar called the RT35. They're another good British company and very affordable.
Nice video! I would like to see such a comparison of the smaller Epiphone hollow bodies -- the 339 vs the Casino Coupe vs the Wildkat vs the Uptown Kat.
Cheers Sean, that will happen before too long I’m sure!
Yes, please! My Epiphone ES-339 Pro is one of my favorite guitars. So versatile. 👍
It's Eric's lost brother! Love this channel, love the sounds, thanks Colin.
😆👍
the alnico pro pickups really turned the sheraton pro into a monster.
Thanks Karen 😎👍
First time viewer here, I enjoyed the video and the format. Hope to see the series continue. You have earned my subscription.
Hey Pieter, thanks for the sub and support... glad you found us!
Cheers Michael glad you found us! 😎👍
I love your films bud. Most underrated guitar channel on RUclips. You should have a lot more subs.
Thanks man that's really appreciated!! :)
Nice one David! Thanks for the kind words and support man it’s appreciated… let us know when it arrives! 😎👍👍
They really did all have their own sound, I quite liked the Riviera,
Thanks Clive 👍😎
I bought the ES335 but should have bought the Riviera.
Excellent comparison and a nice selection of material being played. It's great to hear a comparison that isn't just chugging on the low strings with heavy distortion.
Cheers man thanks appreciated!... damn I just realised I missed out the drop D ‘ do they chug’ section 😂👍
Thanks Michael, good advice! Did you see my series in the 335 upgrades?... not for the faint hearted! 😆👍
Cheers Paul, hopefully Lazarus will turn up soon... or maybe the Ltd Edition 59 will fill the void?? In a few weeks I plan to shoot the comparison.
I have the Riviera in red sparkle , traded my Tele in for it , what a guitar , but I really like the colour on the one you have . Looking out for a Casino .
Not my favourite looking of the bunch, but that Sheraton sounds absolutely lovely! 👌
Great in-depth review on all these. I got the worn Ebony Casino this year and love it. Owned and played a traditional Sheraton for many years and it’s still one of the best sounding semi-hollows out there. If I could get that stealth with the traditional f-holes that would be a forever guitar for sure.
Thanks man, I've had and sold a couple of Sheratons in the past... but this one I will hang onto they are great guitars! 😎👍
Those Dave Grohl/Trini Lopez lightning f-holes are sweet!
Youve sold me a Casino w the .78" neck depth and the glorious p90s. Thanks again!
Shallowest neck of the lot but still feels great... seems to fit the hand nicely and sounds monster! 👍😎
Man. Missed out on a gorgeous used Sheraton at my local Guitar Center. This video is making me regret it all over again.
They do come up from time to time... learn from your mistake and grab it next time! 😆👍
🙏🏽 For including weights - great to know as bit of a deal breaker for me
Btw I remember the "stealth" one as the Gibson "Trini Lopez" model from the mid sixties.
Metaphorically speaking this seems to be turning into the ‘Top Gear’ for guitars! 😂👍 cheers dude have a great weekend.
@@theguitaristas star with a reasonably priced guitar series would be funny
That is brilliant! 🙌🤣👍... I may steal that idea.
I’m enjoying the noodling over Live Forever

Thanks Andrew that’s appreciated 😎👍
Love each guitar but always wanted a Sheraton. Great demo as always mate👍👍👍🎸
Cheers James! 👍
Wonderful follow-up to have all four compared and contrasted. Cheers. I'm too new to notice the "sloppiness" in your playing, Colin. Sounded delightful to me, mate.
Cheers Steve thanks appreciated! 😎👍
Having watched this again, after Part 2, I love the colour of that 335. If these were semifinals, you need a final (?) I always hanker for the Casino, especially in that "worn" finish - won't matter if it gets a bit beaten up in the flat. Thanks again for sharing.
“…we’ll try and make it interesting.”
WTF?
Having discovered your guitaristas RUclips channel, I’m hooked 😮and faithful follower - because you’re - and your ‘show’ ARE so bloody interesting. One can be too modest Colin (not a fault of mine!) 😅
Thanks for the kind words and support Phil! 🙏😊
😆👍👍
ya did it....ordered a the stealth....great review, the smile ad you were playing sold me😃😃....great work
Nice one!! 😆👍
Cheers, that's another one that has me asking is it original enough or is it just a 335 copy?
Cheers Will, the Hofner and Squier in particular are really good ideas and right up my own street 👍😎
I like the casino. That sound is what I'm looking for. Thank you great video
Top shelf compaarison.....I'm a Casino guy ...it's my desert island guitar for sure....I love the weight and I'm a fan of P90s
@@antoonhermans8953 Thanks for the tip...I'll look them up!
I would love to see an Epi Riviera with a (USA made) Gibson Firebird pick up in the bridge position.
I'm not a humbucker guy but I'm loving the sound of both the Riviera and the Sheraton
Great video, let’s have the next one!
I’d like to see the 335 compared to the D’Angelico DC and mini DC
Cheers Andrew, good shout for the DC 👍😎
It would help me with a purchase decision!
Definitely getting some “Who” vibes from that intro jam! Cheers from Pittsburgh!
Cheers Anthony, yes it was a bit of Pete wasn’t it!... without the balls and completely a happy accident 😎👍
I would love to see a comparison with an Ibanez AS73 or possibly an AS93.
Great comparison, be interesting to throw the Epiphone 339 & Casino Coupe into the mix.
Cheers Lawrence, looks like this may be a long running series! :)
As you have already mentioned all four guitars are great; Sheraton Stealth would be my thing, soundwise & lookwise too !
All glories to the ES-335...
