all the negative comments and thumbs downs... just ridiculous. Of course you can go buy a pipe bender, you can also just pay someone to make the part for you. If you have the cash you can build a machine shop too, I know I'd love to have one. But what he is showing in this video is how to bend an aluminum tube *without* a bender and on the cheap. For a one off job, or you need the part quick and don't have the cash to buy tools/pay someone, this will get the job done. And yes I don't see why a person couldn't use fine sand as some have suggested, and other changes/modifications for that matter. Use what you got and build on the idea. Good Video David! Thanks for the Ideas! New Sub!
Agree 100% with your comment ... Necessity was the mother of invention for folks who need a part & either don't have the funds or in my case the time to drive 86 miles to town .n. back... I will add I used wet sand so it packed better & it made a perfect bend first time so a huge thank you to the fella who made the video. There's always going to be negativity in every venue no matter what it is, but I for one appreciate the time it took to make, edit & post the video. Thanx from Idaho
While I believe this works, it would have been nice to see him show a bend actually work out. Aside from not enough sand, it's possible the tube wasn't hot enough. Also depends on at amount of bend, if it was over a bigger length it wouldn't be as hard to pull off, the tighter the more risk of the dredded kink.
Looking at your bend, you can see loads of cracks and buckles in the material. That's from work-hardening material that's already heat treated. It looks like you're trying to anneal the material over the flame, but in order to anneal 6061 aluminum (the most common extrusion material near me), you need to bring it up to 400°C for 2 to 3 hours, then cooled at 10°C per hour down to 250°C, then air cooled. I doubt you're holding the material at temperature long enough to anneal the material.
Can use salt as well. Just gotta really keep packing it in little by little. This way can be washed entirely clean, no sand particles sticking on the inside.
@@richardschofield2201 dude, $35 at Home depot will get you a "specialized" tool. He could have paid for it twice over with all the time he spent on this experiment.

I watched this video with the hope it could help me bend a aluminum sailboat mast back in shape. I guess I'm going to have to keep looking for another video.

Hi, nice video there. Is it possible to use same technique to bend 90 degrees aluminium tube 3/4 inch diameter?and how long you heating the pipe until it ready for bending?
depends how sharp you need the bend to be? if you don't mind having a very wide curve then yes, but if you need it to be a tight 90 degree bend then no way

Use finer sand and a funnel. Pack the sand better w/a rod before you drive in last end cap.
