      I think music theory definitely makes u a better producer, but more often times than not, you lock yourself with "rules". Definitely a key part of producing, but not what makes you great. Good vid.

    Music theory really helps in getting the ideas out of your head and into the DAW. Takes a lot of the trial and error out of it

    Knowing basic music theory is essential no matter what one's opinion is. If you're a musician or producer, it's likely that every song or beat you make follows a certain BPM, time signature, key signature, and might even have some dynamics going on. All of that involves music theory. Even if you use a system to know how to create chords that's different than how college or some type of music university would traditionally teach, you are still using music theory. You can debate whether or not you need to know intermediate or advanced techniques, but pretty much everyone uses and needs at least a basic knowledge of music theory.

  • @PeteS_1994

    It helps I'm thinking. With music theory it's easier to know how to match samples and sounds, especially as one who knows music theory would understand what key a sample is in and stuff. They would have better understanding most time how to structure a beat, the more I learn about music production the less complex most stuff I want to make sounds. Composition seems important in music production especially when it comes to modern edm.
    I don't know much theory but have learnt a bit and seen tutorials where it seems some music theory is important to making a beat sound right. For example, from a tutorial I watched which involved adding chords to an acapella, the uploader had to work out what key the sample was in. I can imagine the same having to be done if you're using multiple samples.

    Music theory helps you get out ideas quicker. you could make a couple wips in one day that would have taken you a few days to do the exact same thing because you already had an idea of what to do before going into your daw and blindly editing notes.

    I definitely recommend learning a bit of theory, it will help you be more creative and express yourself in your music, it helped and still helps me to this day

    I think its equally important to have a general understanding of music theory as it is to have a trained ear. Music theory is only one dimension without a good ear and creativity.

  • @Plazmax88
    @Plazmax88 7 лет назад +5

    Of course it makes it better. You can make a good melody without theory knowledge, but making an interesting melody or a great melody not counting flukes takes knowledge. Take for example the original Mario 1-1 melody, musically it is genius and that is not going to be possible without they knowledge.

  • @Bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
    @Bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 7 лет назад +2

    I really think that if I really learn music theory in detail, it would just restrict me cause I would just use scales all the time and I feel that I can make pretty good melodies without it.

    You could argue that knowing music theory can lead to over thinking and stale beats or w/e, I would say that having a great EAR is what makes better production. I've known theory for about 10 years, but it wasn't until recently when I started singing along to my favorite bass lines and leads that I felt like I was getting the most out of music theory. Work on developing the flow between your theory knowledge, ear training, and muscle memory on the keyboard (or w/e instrument(s) you play). That's what Game is talking about in a lot of these videos and that's how he can make beats quickly and why he is successful. Remember time is money yo

  • @e-jayhylton7122
    @e-jayhylton7122 7 лет назад +1

    i'm suprised this question still appears, all your idols know theory, and or will use it to bring their music to new levels, hands down. guys who make real money or have developed very musical ears know theory, it's like music theory is being labelled corny, bro if you are uncreative af and know alot of musicallity you will still get paid for your work more than most lol facts. a few guys who know theory ALMOST ALL ELECTRONIC MUSICIANS, J dilla. Fly Lo, Michael Jackson, The weeknd, beiber, zaytoven, i bet you metro is learning theory as well to break barriers and knows basic theory enough to make decent chords by mouse. Flume, stephen marley, reggae guys, i could rant all day, but if you wish to be in the top scope of any genre, theory is not even the top requirment lol it's one of the first, outstanding composition and musical ideas and execution get you to the levels yall dream of. music theory is a tool like your daw, use it then break it and make sure your music is musical. if yall scorn theory yall trying to kill one aspect of your brain music is not solely creativity it is equally about structure, music that brings you emotionally over the top encompasses aspects of the left and right hemipshere of the brain. there's a reason tehre's keys and scales as guidelines you just wanna sound cool saying you do it by ear then always end up in C major or A minor lol.

    No u don’t need music theory. I asked a bunch of my favorite producers on RUclips if they knew it, and if so is it a must? They all said they didn’t know music theory and one of them even called it a waste of time.

    • @benpowell5007
      @benpowell5007 6 лет назад +1

      None of The Beatles knew music theory. Hans Zimmer doesn't know much music theory. And I doubt that 95% of the producers who are famous (I.E Skrillex ect) sat down and did a music theory exam. Armin van Burren knows a bit.

    Honestly u really gotta try out random melodies until they sound good. However that being said, the short answer is learning music theory or music harmony always gives a small advantage as time won't be an issue when making beats as you know exactly what your doing when you're placing down melodies and chords etc...
