Diamond T was founded by the son of a shoe and boot manufacturer (C.A.Tilt) in 1905 in Chicago and was purchased White Motor Company in 1958. REO was purchased by White Motor Company in1957. In 1967 White Motor Company merged Diamond T and REO TRUCKS to make Diamond REO trucks and in1975 Diamond REO was shut down and later in 75 the plant burnt down.
Just as a note, REO stands for Ransom Edward Olds. Mr. Olds started the company after he was edged out at Oldsmobile. REO made cars and trucks till the middle 30s. thanks for the history.
Hank, 2020 was a horrible year. My wife, who had been ill for a long time, went into a nursing home in March of that year and passed away there in July. Due to Covid I was unable to be with her all that time. Along the way, one of your videos popped up on my Facebook newsfeed. I started watching yours, then also others that you mentioned. They really helped me through one of the darkest periods of my life. I enjoy watching you and Wiley and your escapades. You both have a great sense of humor and are very entertaining. Thank you! Richard
I honestly think it started at 8 or 9 rotations by the engine side belt, awesome old truck, thanks for taking us along, all the best to yous and your loved ones
That was awesome, I love to see the older engines crank. It's amazing that the old diesels crank after sitting for so many years. Love watching you guys and appreciate the clean fun you and Willie have, thanks.
Hank, listen up... next time your out of fuel like this was, loosen the lines at the injectors and while its running on starting fluid, the air will work itself out and you just keep tightening each line up as you see that fuel start dripping real good, It don't need to be flowing, just most of air out... It don't pick its air out of the lines cause its pressure from air not wanting to go through the injectors. You can't hurt that engine running on straight starting fluid... ask old Peg from Spirit Lake up in canada. It might take ten or fifteen minutes to get some of that air out but once it has two or three cylinders a working, its gonna prime itself. I rebuilt my last diesel engine, a cummins for my brother as he had to have his rig a running bad so I did most all the work crippled as I am in four days.. from tear down and new crankshaft and cam, bearings, liners and all, back in his rig and driving... four days so I just might of learned something wrenching heavy equipment for steady twenty years before doing other stuff as well. I did keep turning wrenches as you just can't stop when its all ya really know. Them shutters on the front is to keep some heat in the engine in cold weather as diesels don't run so well cold... you want to stretch the fuel, pour the strained out for chunks old engine oil.... it will run on it just fine, no extra smoke or other. Ask someone that you trust to explain it to you. Decent weather (not dead winter anchorage ak) it will crank and run on straight used oil just as good.... go find out and your going to find out I am right. It has to go through filters for that engine as straight oil or diesel otherwise ain't right unless filtered on any diesel engine
Kysor radiator shutter 🙂 Spray a decent penetrant/rust-remover onto all the shutter bearings and work them back and forth until the slats each move freely. Clean-up the contacts on the temperature switch and treat them to some dielectric grease to keep them sweet. If it still doesn’t work, check the resistance at the switch with a multimeter, that’s probably the only other failure point. It was designed for use in Arctic conditions so it should be fine your side of Canada 🙂
I sure do miss seeing the two of you working together With that said great job Hank and Wiley would love to see the two of you on more adventures together
One thing i know for sure!! If i'm not an ocean away i really would like to spend a day with you guys!! As Hank say it would be awesome!!! You guys are so funny and do lots of interesting stuff!! Keep it that way!!!
Your daughter is like a breath of fresh air. I love the way the old dump truck looks very fancy. Neat style of body. I think I would kinda like to have one if I had any money. LOL
This truck's maker also has a pretty significant tie to the music industry. In 1984, a group of musicians got together in Tennessee, and after a few years paying their dues, they signed a record deal in 1990. Between 1991, and 2006, they had 32 hit singles, five of which hit number one. Their name? Diamond Rio!
Enjoy watching you two get these old gals running again that Cummins in that reo must be in really good shape to start that easy. Thanks guys I work along with you on them. Sometimes I get right but you two get right more times than i do.
I owned & used a single axle 1066 diamond T tractor with a 6V53 detroit diesel . The cab was just like that one youre working on, it was one of the best trucks i've owned!!
Great video Wiley. You too Hank. Here's a novel idea. You should get a nice 5 gal. container and rig up a supply line and a return line. Everytime y'all go to another truck all you have to do is top off your can. That way you by pass all the trash and crap. Great work guys and girl.❤🐘🇺🇸
Great video..old cummins 220.once put a piston and liner in one on the side of the road then drove it 560 miles home.dam good engine.sounded cool too.thanks for "makin oil"guys.
My Dad owned a '66 Diamond T that was sort of a Reo hybrid. It came from the factory with a Diamond T cab (had the door emblems) and chassis but a fiberglass Diamond Reo hood with Diamond T emblems instead of the metal fenders. I have pictures. Came with a 238 and 10 Speed Roadranger.
You NEED to come to Tennessee. If you are driving all the way to Georgia just keep on driving and come to Tennessee. The people here are very friendly.
I never knew about Diamond T trucks until I ventured to Kansas to pickup a Ford! The old fella had a ton of cool Diamond T's even an old cabover semi tractor. Fun video Hank! 👍😁
I think this one might defeat your efforts, but here's to trying. My mother had fond memories of a Rio car in the UK that her father ran in the 1920s, but the family lost a considerable amount in the thirties and the Rio was long gone. Later, he had a small UK car, but had moved from their home of mother's fond memory in the country. Whenever I see a reference to Rio, it causes fond flashes of memory of her words about that car.
Hello hamtonville farm hank and Wiley another. Great will it start video I was very pleased to see a diamond reo. Will it start this is first one of a will start it ever seen when it live up north they were very popular trucks for local oil companies home oil delivery and local trash companies had them they had them in gas jobs also I think before Diseal then change over to Diseal. Engines stay blessed 🙏
This so awesome that truck come from Bainbridge ga I live in Bainbridge born and raised here that's awesome to see this truck my granddad works for the city of Bainbridge he watch the video and confirmed he drove back in the day that truck when he first started out at the city of Bainbridge in the 90's
I remember the old White trucks that looked like this and that might be a 220 and one of the best sounding engines EVER! The local VFD had a Studebaker/Reo deuce-and-a-half G.I. truck with a tank on it. Reo gas engine. Good old truck. Shutters to maintain engine temps but also close and help economy by not having the fan pulling air all the time. You must've sweet talked Wiley pretty heavy. God Bless!
In Ice and snow country those would be closed all of the time. The blizzards are so bad that Cars have block heaters running 24/7. My dad drove to get mom from the airport and on the way back they had to shovel snow out of the truck to keep the engine warm enough to keep running! Grand Forks back to Lagdon N.D. (sp maybe). Temp living up there while being prime designer on massive Radar. 🙂
Hey Hank. Love those Ole Diamond Reo's. I retired from a big construction company out of Connecticut. Back in the 80's they purchased 15 of these dump trucks. They weren't that good looking of a truck but were dependable and work horse's.
Growing up as a kid in Utah the City of North Salt Lake had a Beautiful Red Fire Engine mounted on a Diamond Reo Cab and Chassis it was a exciting site to see it responding on a fire call! 2 Thumbs up Guys
Excellent video Hank :) & Wiley :) also any motor be well maintained up can start up no problem to and I have seen it to in 3 steps get motor start too after sitting no start up ! Myself seen in gas motor not start up in gas motor was 25 years and Desiel motor was 23 years take few steps too get going too anyone do get running nice! Also Hank song More Than Feeling is by Rock Group Boston it 1978 hit from them Lol!
Been in a reo had 120 hp 5 speed with a 3 speed joey and carting a 7 yard concrete agitator .What a rocket and still not full air .Maybe a perkins common in Australia.Another was the the Knocker Commer 3 cylinder GM we got the best downunder.
Built in my hometown of Lansing Michigan, I knew many people who worked there and was related to the last general manager of the company. Also went to school with a great grandson of R E Olds. Great trucks but the company never modernized and was bled to death by White Motors and every owner afterwards.
Watch a few other Will it start on Semi and heavy equipment instead of toting batteries they use a couple of jump boxes they are lighter and easy to move around, just a idea. one I watch has one of them that has 24 volts to jump with.
The transmission is a Fuller 13 speed Roadranger. I drove a '67 with a 8V71-270 that had been converted to 318 and a 16 speed Spicer air shift 4x4 transmission.
Awesome, never heard of a slant six Cummins. Made a believer outta me. 🤣🤣 impressive start up. I enjoyed your History Lesson. Like you I've heard old times talk about the Diamond Reo but never seen one in real life.👍👍
Diamond Rio is also a country band 😄🪕 That is a neat old truck!! And it starts so easily. It looks like the back wheels were still in really good shape. I wonder why it didn't have any front wheels on it. Good job guys! Thanks for sharing!
Love to see happy people is these times and that engine sounds so good. Check out diesel creek he's like you but has way more promlems (--: ran outta fuel and ended up with an air lock major bleeding needed/ Pretty lady though.
Hey I enjoyed the video. We have a Diamond Reo truck that's a six cylinder gas motor. We a currently putting a diesel motor in it . It is the same body style as the one in video . IT IS a tandem with four wheel drive, a stout build truck. You can see it on a little southern brothers youtube channel
These old Diamond REO trucks are cool just like the AutoCar's. One of REO's first trucks was the Speedwagon, where the band of a similar name got their name from. There's a quarry here in town that still runs the old MACK trucks with the narrow off-center cabs. I see them all the time hauling gravel to people. :)
i drove the same model here in australia in early eightys had a nine speed road ranger in it and a six fifty three in it went like a little rocket till you put a load on it then you worked hard.

Enjoyed this video Hank and Wiley. I must say that I didn't think you would get it to start. Glad you did.
That was awesome, I love to see the older engines crank. It's amazing that the old diesels crank after sitting for so many years. Love watching you guys and appreciate the clean fun you and Willie have, thanks.
Diamond REO's were common in mid-Michigan where I grew up in '60's and 70's. They may have had a plant in Lansing MI. Great to see one!
Love the old diamond reo trucks, when I was a kid there was still a couple in use where I lived. Don't see any used any more. Keep up the good work!
Thank you sir

yup, all it needed was a wrench and someone working the gas pedal a bit. shame :)
