@ehrengross true, but I feel like when your gonna have flubs, you should at least hear it a little bit, and get the full experience of a marching drum. Like u know what I mean?
@@colinhill1417 but bass drums project sound a lot, maybe if you use the 14 inch one, put a tenor head and muffle it a lot, but at that point, it's just a normal flub
@ehrengross yeah, just use the 14 inch one, and maybe a second tenor. Just do that and make sure they sound good and have the new members get better at stuff.
Dude these were showcased back at some convention in 2011 and I asked the rep if he thought they’d catch on. He said “the tuba became the sousaphone, it’s time the base drum evolves” 😂😂
My high school marched these for years. We loved them! Eventually changed to standard marching bass drums. We actually played White Boy Smooth one year for our percussion ensemble and used them!!!
You're diving again! That's awesome. I was gonna say I way preferred the sound of the traditional bass drums, then I thought the other ones sounded good with the heads off, and then I changed my mind again because I kinda think they sound sorta like a hollow tube. Which, I mean, I guess they are. They do look cool, but I think the traditional bass drum setup sounds just a bit better.
I was taught match grip in HS. I noticed college and DCI do traditional. I started to join the Cincinnati Pride in the 90s when they were going to start back up, but I couldn't play traditional so I didn't go back.
i was going through the video downplaying those drums, and then the lick at 7:12 happened and my jaw just dropped. WAY impressed with the drums with only 1 head on
The Racine Kilties DBC tried using these in 2015, luckily I'm a tenor player but the 2 biggest complaints were they did not project AT ALL and the top head was angled towards the player so they're technique was jacked.. These things were awful haha
What do you mean the "technique was all jacked" ? The optimal technique is determined by the instrument. Obviously the technique will be slightly different than the technique for a flat drum but it can't be any less ergonomic than a sideways bassdrum.
Yeah ... I wasn't fast enough but .... This is video #17 of requesting Eric to do another "Behind the Gock Block" Episode. The last episode was 10-20-2020! It's time for Eric to bring back all of his characters!
Dang, that is a great design and they sound great without the outside heads! Maybe I'll get them for my marching band. My students can't seem to *not* run people over with the bass drums lol
These remind me of Stingray marching drums. I love the sound of Stingray drums so much. Best transients on the quads and bass (although their basses were normal shaped). The angle snare was a little too thin for me though though.

Another advantage is that it’s easier to learn bass drum flams on because a flam on a bass drum usually is hard to learn because it’s just slightly different than a horizontal head
Being a drummer with only 50 years of experience, I have absolutely ZERO ability to judge your setup! You put a lot of work into that video, I appreciate your efforts to bring us the bizarre. I do have one question which wasn't covered in this excellent video. It looks like a standard upright bass drum is closer to the center of mass of the drummer. Being further away from the body, Is the Ergo Sonic more difficult to march and maneuver?
Not too dissimilar, sonically. I really like the volume/tone consistency with the ergos directing all their sound toward the audience versus half. Really neat idea. I definitely like the design and thought process behind it. And I even like the looks. It’s a break from tradition to be sure, but not egregiously so. Tasteful and well executed, IMO, but perhaps a bit complex from a manufacturing standpoint. Curious about long-term durability with those joints (if you stated their age, I didn’t catch it).
I like the traditional drums because they have more variety of sound. A hit with your left or right hand gives you different things, vs all hits sound the same on the ergo sonic it just depends on where you look.
For reference, I'm listening to this a set of very nice JBL studio monitors. I liked the sound of the Ergo Sonic drums ONCE you gave them some needed TLC.
I think these would work well in a tribal or post-apocalyptic themed show where the instruments are made to look like they were cobbled together from scraps.
Already I can tell they really are louder than the bass drums in your other videos. They’re also sharper and less dull. The normal drums sound smooshed.
These gave me nightmarish flashbacks to the late 1980s and early 1990s when there was a short lived collection of marching toms that were fiberglass (I think) and curved on the bottom to redirect the sound forward. I remember they looked heavier than 'bleep' and I'm so glad they died a quick death and people just use simple sound reflectors instead of those horrid things. I can't find any pictures of them and several groups in DCI used them. I want to say they were Slingerland, but that may just me inserting a name I know.
I'm no bass drum oficionado but that lick with the ErgoSonics with no resonant head sounded cleanest and best in my opinion. How long have these been a thing?
I don't really like the sound of these. I don't know how to explain it any better, but you can 100% hear every degree of the angled drums. The sound sounds like it's been bent just like the drums. The way it projects just doesn't have that punch you want from basses. ESPECIALLY when playing spits. The headless ergosonics have some potential for recording though. Most marching bass recordings cut out a lot of that extra bass resonance so having that option for a video or recording seems useful
Sound ranking (my opinion): Tied for 1st - Ergo Basses with and without reso heads Distant 3rd - traditional marching basses The Ergo drums just had a richness that is missing in most marching basses these days. So many dumlines care SO much about showing of crazy chops that they are willing to tune and muffle the basses in a way that is more articulate but sounds like choked out cardboard boxes. You can hardly call them basses if they are nearly atonal. It becomes difficult to categorize them as the bass part of the battery if the low frequency tonal information is almost completely stripped out. Whether it was tuning, muffling, or just the design of the ergo drums, they seemed, in this video, to have a rich sustain that was fantastic. I liked them with and without the reso heads, so maybe a ported head would be just the right balance between. It would be great if you found your inner rdavidr, and let us hear the results.
The traditional drums have 2 sounds... near head and far head. The Ergo drums are cool, and they sound just fine to me. I don't fault anyone who likes them.
But what about the Ergo Sonic bass drum - enors?
Ergo Sonic benors!
He did that

Better version of flubs in my opinion
Agreed!
Nah, the whole point of flubs is not sound projection, but getting experience marching with a drum.

The headless sound clean and consistent.

The ergos with the bottom heads off sound fantastic

I want that traditional vs match discussion and you gotta do it with Aged Out Reacts
The headless version sounded crispy I like it. I’d be interested to see a 26 like that 😂
I'm agree on the sound, but i loved marching normal bass and just something about facing a different direction
Yeah, these are like the old "Stingray" snares from the 90's my old drum and baton corps played
The German Company Troyandrums has formerly built such models under the brand „V-Drums“. I do not know if these are still produced.
You're diving again! That's awesome.

Yesterday my school got the highest score in Class-A for the WGI regional happing yesterday.
They have their place, parades and football games they’d be fun. But I agree, the identity of bass drum is in its horizontal stroke
There's also going to be electronic marching bass drums too.
I was taught match grip in HS. I noticed college and DCI do traditional. I started to join the Cincinnati Pride in the 90s when they were going to start back up, but I couldn't play traditional so I didn't go back.
