As a teacher, I can tell you we legit do use this film to help kids understand their own emotions more! We have to show it now because it’s 9 years old and they haven’t necessarily seen it, but then we talk about their emotions as colours and stuff and they can use that language to communicate with us.

    • @lunacouer
      @lunacouer 4 месяца назад +70

My nephew was one of the blessed ones whose teachers used this to teach emotions. It was around when it came out, but his 4th grade teachers got on those lessons plans super quick. That's why once, when I asked him how he was after a bad day at school, he said "Anger is driving right now". It gave him an easy way for us to talk about what happened instead of him acting out his anger (which happened a lot due to a rough home situation). Once he was able to verbally express his feelings, he felt better and then went off to play.
Your efforts are helping your kids in a million different ways you don't get to see. Thank you.

This movie is INCREDIBLE with color theory.
Riley: striped shirt as they're moving with all colors on them to show theyre in harmony, or so it seems. yellow jacket on the first day of school because she's still young enough to be excited. Striped shirt sans blue and yellow at the dinner table because all of her emotions are fighting for control with joy and sadness gone. Black jacket because she's emotionally shutting down.
Emotions: joy has blue hair, backing up the theory joy and sadness go hand in hand. Disgust has a purple ascot, suggesting disgust is mainly motivated by what scares us. Anger is wearing a red tie showing how when were angry, we can't see, hear, or feel anything else. Think, "seeing red". Fearvitself is a purple, a combination of red and blue, or in this case, a combination of Anger and sadness. And finally Sadness is wearing a white turtleneck as a combination of all the emotions, like how all light is combined to make white light.

When Riley is on the bus and comes back home and starts to break down in front of her parents, I always lose it. What’s absolutely brilliant about this movie was how perfect they captured what it means to be human; to have complex emotions and how you deal with them and grow from them. And having to admit that you are feeling these wild emotions is hard, but there’s always people there feeling the same things too, and you aren’t alone??
Yeah, this movie deserved the Awards.

I've watched several reactions to this movie and find it interesting that none of the reactors pick up on how Joy is The only character whose hair color is different from the rest of their color scheme. Sadness has blue hair and she's blue, fear has purple hair and he is purple, disgust is green with green hair etc. Joy is yellow but her hair is blue. Blue like sadness.Because you can't experience joy without also having experienced what's sadness is like.

I think, with the parents, it's more that all their emotions share the "Emotions Panel" and work together (like Riley's Emotions get to do at the end with their new panel) since they are more mature, and their centre Emotion is probably the one that they're feeling the most recently.
Like how the parents are more stressed with the move and so are more sad and angry with things being so different and not working out well to begin with.

  • @RubyMadigan
    @RubyMadigan 4 месяца назад +79

With sadness running the mum's head and anger running the dad's, the theory I've seen most is that the emotions evolve over the years. Sadness evolves to encompass empathy and compassion. Anger covers protectiveness and strength. As a kid the emotions are more singular and separate but it's less so as an adult
I love this movie and I will say the second one is also strong. There were certain moments that were like a kick in the gut to me, I related so strongly to my own experiences as a teenager (and somewhat into my 20s if we're being honest)

Imagine joy actually making it through the tube. Riley will be left with only happy, disgust, angry, and fear emotions. That's kinda scary to think what kind of person she'll be. I think guilt, regret, conscience, consideration, and many other reflective emotions all link to sadness too. So being happy with only disgust, fear, and anger as your other driving forces is not a good combination.

They couldn't send the core memories back to HQ through the tunnel, because either Anger, Disgust or Fear would need to handle them to get back into the console. But by them doing this, they'd change the colour of the memories to green, red or purple. Joy would need to be in HQ to put them back in without effecting them.

The first half is so funny to me as he hovers so close to getting it, but then goes back to "stop being so handsy!" This movie is such a great reminder to adults about the importance of embracing the seemingly negative emotions too. Her parents were unintentionally pushing a toxic positivity and it was pressuring Riley to ignore her emotions. Unfortunately we do that to ourselves a lot.
I forgot my imaginary friend for years. Fortunately I had modeled her off of Kyra from The Dark Crystal so when I finally rewatched after too long I remembered her. If you haven't watched that movie please do!

I love this movie so much. As I child, most of your memories should be happy but as you grow older you will have more complex feelings. Just like the example of joy and sadness together. Of course, all of her memories had to turn sad. She is 12 years old. She moved away from her friends and everything she knew. And it is okay to feel sad. I watched a video of a therapist reacting to that and he commented on that toxic joy. If you don't want to smile, then don't do it.

Core memories are more memories that shape us, rather than the ones we want to remember.
It's a good thing Riley has joyfully core memories, that means she lives in a healthy environment.
Of course as we grow up, emotions and memories get more complex and we don't only have joyfully memories. (Duh, premise of the Movie)
For me.... Im 22 and still suffer from an event that shaped me immensely.
I didn't grow up in a good or healthy environment, and a "core memory" that I have is my mother admitting to me that everything she does is for the purpose to bring me closer to undoing myself.
I know this sounds fake as fuck but sadly people life trough stuff like this all the time.
I'm working on that memory and to get better, I am much better now that I'm no contact with her as much as possible and my life is good thanks to my friends.
But this still affects me so so much.
For anyone thinking there is something wrong with them because they don't have happy core memories, you aren't.
You are not alone, it is not you.
It's the stuff that happened to you.
That of course shaped you, maybe you have trust issues now... But that's okey.
    Life can go on.
Choose good people for you that surround you, and make decisions that are good for you.
You got this, and keep going. Okey?

Oh yeah, and I wanted to say that I think when it comes to the "Core Memories" being sent back up by the jellybean people (or whatever), I think it's mostly just for comedy, but also that Joy is worried the memories will change if another emotion (Fear, Disgust, Anger) touches them like they had with Sadness, and she hadn't even considered that she herself might be able to get in the tube at that point, because it's never been done before... That's the way I perceived it anyways. 🤷

So about the moms sadness and the dad's anger...

Sadness also in bodies empathy (as seen with Bing Bong).
My Favorite theory is that the mom is very Empathetic and the Dad is Protective.
He never once showed anger issues, just strict parenting measures.
And as some people like to point out, all emotions sit at the console in the adult mind. So is there really a "lead emotion" when everyone has a say?

anger being the main emotion for riley's dad doesn't have to be a bad thing. the movie itself states that anger is very concerned with things being fair, so anger in a normal adult could take the form of being headstrong, impulsive, protective and a quickness to correcting percieved injustices. our culture as a whole has a weird relationship with anger, because some don't even count it as an emotion (see all the people saying that men don't get emotional while those same men have angry outbursts all the time), and is also demonised (i rarely show or feel anger as an adult because every time i showed that emotion as a teen i was shot down and/or laughed at). like sadness, anger isn't a a wholly negative emotion

I feel like even if the core memories are sent back earlier to HQ it'd still need the corresponding emotion to make them actually work cuz the others might affect the memories badly if its not joy who handles the helm or not in the vicinity like feeling disgust or fear for acting goofy or doing family activities etc.

This is such a beautiful movie. I bawl my eyes out and laugh my ass off every time I watch it. The sentiment with the importance of Sadness, when it comes to processing things, and how even our fondest and happiest memories often occur _because_ something sad just happened is so true. I also love when we get a glimpse into the parent's heads.
I think the Mom having Sadness as "Captain of HQ" or whatever is mostly to show how mature she is, because it fits with the themes of the story in general, and the Dad having Anger as Captain is mostly for comedy. It also makes sense within the context of the movie, because the Dad is mad about the moving truck being delayed and everything, so it's logical that Anger would be at the forefront of his mind. On the other hand, the Mom is upset and sort of trying to "hold it together," since things aren't going as planned, so it makes sense to me that Sadness would be at the helm during this time in her life. I mean, it's shown that other emotions can take over and run the board in Riley's head, so that doesn't necessarily mean that Sadness and Anger are the Captains of Mom's and Dad's heads, respectively, all the time.... Hopefully that interpretation makes sense to other people as well lol

I moved a lot especially as a kid, I think teachers do the basic information for the class more for people to have information to approach you about. It does actually lighten the load of having to make the first move on average.
