  • VISUALLY EXPLAINED
The Briggs and Stratton primer bulb is a crucial component in the carburetion system of small engines like the Classic, Sprint, Series 450, and 500 models. Its primary purpose is to deliver a surge of fuel directly into the carburetor to aid in starting a cold engine. Here's how it works:
Manual Pumping: When you press the primer bulb, it creates a temporary increase in air pressure within the carburetor's float bowl, while also drawing fuel from the fuel tank. The primer bulb is designed to be a manual pump, allowing you to press it several times to introduce fuel into the system.
Fuel Path: As you press the bulb, it pushes fuel through a fuel line or a fuel passage that connects directly to the carburetor. The increased pressure in the system causes a one-way check valve (often located in the carburetor) to open, allowing the fuel to flow into the carburetor.
Fuel Enrichment: The fuel delivered by the primer bulb enriches the air-fuel mixture within the carburetor, making it easier to ignite. This is especially helpful during cold starts when the engine might have difficulty drawing enough fuel on its own.
Starting Assistance: The enriched mixture created by the primer bulb ensures that there's enough fuel for a cold engine to start. Once the engine is running and has warmed up, it can draw fuel from the carburetor without the primer bulb's assistance.
In summary, the primer bulb is a user-operated pump that provides a quick and convenient way to assist in starting a small engine by temporarily enriching the air-fuel mixture. This is particularly helpful for cold starts, ensuring the engine fires up more easily.

    Excellent explanation.
I would just like to add one more reason the priming Bulb will not prime the carburetor. which none of the RUclips pages seem
    to have mentioned.
If you replace the diaphragm and you still just suck air. It is worth removing the Bulb and checking to see if the
one way valve behind the Bulb has not popped out of its recess. The Bulb is removed by pressing in the locking tabs on each side.
Be careful when removing the Bulb, as the steel ball and spring are quite miniscule and will easily get lost if dropped on the floor.
It is quite a fiddly job, requiring small needle nose pliers or tweezers, but supergluing the rubber retaining orifice is probably the best way
to fix the problem. Otherwise, a new Carburetor may be required.

First mention of the ball bearing and spring I’ve found, I thought I was going nuts and didn’t know if it was meant to be in there as nowhere mentions it

Absolutely. Age is no barrier. I’m really pleased you are learning because learning is staying young. My dad is the same age as you and he is spending 2 days per week taking wrestling classes and Brazilian Jujitsu grappling. He refuses to see age as anything but a number. He fights men in their 20s and he is a real force to be come up against. Keep learning Sir, and keep strong 💪. Craig 👍

I know this is an older video, but people are still viewing it. This video helped me chase down a problem I had with a new 3.5hp B&S mower for many years. It never seemed like the primer system was working properly and took many pumps for the engine to start and I think it would start after it primed it self after many pulls. I found that the plastic ring that holds the primer bulb in was not seated (clicked in) and allowed an air leak. Starts with 3 pumps now.

Thank you sooo much. Have three of these I need to get running that needed the diaphragm and gasket. Put one in and it ran great with ether but it wouldn't prime when I held my finger over the prime outlet in the intake it would fill up the bulb but when I took my finger off it would just pump air. When I pumped it really fast all of a sudden it started working. I'm assuming it just needed to be worked since it was brand new.

Is there a check valve in the pick up pipe to stop fuel travelling back down the pipe and into the fuel tank when the primer bulb is pressed? Very good presentation

Is it possible for us to over prime the engine? What happens if we press the bulb too many times? Thank you.

John C yes you can overprime on this particular model/type of carburetor. Its possible to flood the engine. Just keep pulling and it will start.
