Now I'm really curious. If the game still holds the same values as GdA then I'm all in. Really intrigued in how the firing plays out and to discover the effectiveness of the changes. Most of all like you mentioned JP is to see these big games get a conclusion in a quicker time. Exciting.
Interesting talk through of the rule changes. It will be interesting to see how the British thin red line works against the massed charges of the French.
Thanks for this JP. Streamlined eh? That sounds good to me, maybe with more exposure you will convince me with GDA2. Best wishes for a great 2023 to you and Charlie
Thanks for the heads up. The changes sound reasonable and also likely to improve play. I like the concept of only a single battalion from a brigade attacking but with support. I’d hope that it will reduce the tendency to pile a bunch of battalions into a single combat, which I suspect would be difficult to coordinate or control, let alone manoeuvre any distance. In the first edition I found working out where to apply hits on multi battalion attacks to be a pain.
Thanks for this. There seems to be an inevitable trade off in rules that want to represent corps level actions and above but retain battalion level detail. Things that took a long time, such as clearing a village or moving forward a foot artillery battery, have to fit into a time scale that allows close order battalions to exchange close range volleys over multiple turns and open field melees that took minutes to resolve. It sounds like the new artillery rules are tweaked toward the big battle rather than representational, tactical. There does seem to be a degree of village ping-pong, that might be the result of the big battle scale applying to BUA, but I wonder if it doesn't make villagers targets rather than strongholds.
The scenario victory conditions was focused on holding villages and I do note how many of the napoleonic battles I read about do focus on back and forth combats around built up areas.
But I agree the improved counter battery certainly feels less tactical as does the improved artillery movement ( or rather fewer penalties for artillery fire v other batteries and moving), the new infantry assault is something I’d need a few more games to work out how it plays. In many games it will be similar to the old GdA as multiple assaults were generally I found pretty uncommon.
@@JP-ml4zh I agree re back and forth assaults on villages but iirc they tend to be in the course of a full day, which is my point re what George Gush called the double scaled wargame that most of us prefer.
Interesting points there jp, As someone who builds big armies it will be interesting at last to be able to use my corps, division and army c in cs in a game. Not sure on the mobility of arty, I can except horse as that's what they were for, but foot? Naw. Maybe forward a bit hard to man handle a 9lb let alone a 12lbs. Can except 1/2 a move to limber and move 1/2 and the other way round full for 12lbs. Counter battery Wellington not going to like that lol.
I'm not sure I like that reason for changing the Infantry Assault rules - to prevent French from effectively assaulting British in line. GdA is already very geared towards the British right down to the basic "brigade" organisation. I really like GdA but I hope it doesn't go further down the path of making the British into super solders and everyone else second or third rate. The British did lose battles during the Napoleonic Wars.
I think I’d need a few more games to judge and the scenario we played was very focused on capturing the villages so there was little if any open field infantry on infantry combat….and no British…..so a good question still to be answered I think……

Thanks very much Chris, and thanks for the great games last year, best wishes for the new one , cheers
JP
Hi, love the idea of having a deeper table, 10 feet amazing. Just wondered how Charlie manages to reach to the centre? Thanks.
Alan.
Very interesting to hear JP. Speeding up the game is good to my mind. I look forward to getting hold of a copy when they come out
👍👍

Seems to play ok but I’d like a few more games to check it out, like you I certainly found the old mechanisms a bit of a headache 🤕😀😀
That’s a really nice church. Is it scratch built or bought?

Very nice, but when?
Thanks for the rule review JP👍🏻
Thanks I am glad it was useful, happy new year, cheers JP

Not often though. 😉
All I want for Christmas is Gd'A2!!!
Sometime soon I hope 👍👍
I tried to watch the earlier version, but your commentary was not audible so had to mute and just watch. ;)
It’s tough in a room full of people having fun 😲😲😀😀😀, I know it’s hard to pick out….But better to post it than not I thought…
@@JP-ml4zh ...indeed ;)
