Hi, i was the CEO of Mobius and Rockstar Leeds. i enjoyed this little jaunt down memory lane, thanks for the flashback.
Thanks for stopping by!
Yeah same, just a comment will act as an autograph for me
Ben is Blunt hi Ben, I'm glad you enjoyed our games. All the best. Gordon,
@@GordonHallNow Hi Gordon, that would be great. I don't want to post my address here, how can we get in contact please?
ASMR-Alex here you go. facebook.com/profile.php?id=838703941
damn that's cool. max payne is one of my favorites and now i kinda wanna play this version
yo thanks for watching dude, sorry to fangirl out but I'm a long time fan so it's cool to see you here :) I sing along to your songs in the shower!
NakeyJaky
Pretty easy to find on Amazon, dude.
Oh wow Nakey Jakey. Love your vids.
300K subs and you don't bother verifying your channel?
Longtime hot boy right here
Useless grenades and sudden difficulty curve.
Sounds just like the original to be honest.
just use bullet time only, no dodging
@RNIK tube I remember using bullet dodge, it leads to multiple deaths
@RNIK tube i love max payne, but i found the shootdodge only usefull when you already dodged a few shots with the side-roll. When just straight up using the shootdodge, you can still get hit when max is starting to leap. And shootdodging around a wall/corner, despite being iconic, is actually the worst idea you could have a lot of times, because enemies have instantanious reaction time, and as soon as a pixel of your body pops out, they immediately shoot.
@RNIK tube i remember on one of the last levels, with that bullet proof window/gate that opens and reveals a bunch of guys that open fire on your ass, i literally just side-rolled back and forth, keeping the enemies in front of me, and never got shot
grenades were useful ngl for getting clear of those red trip mines
Fun fact: Originally, Max Payne started development in late 90s as an isometric shooter. So this is actually pretty close to what could've been.
It looked different, but it was never isometric shooter.
no the earliest shots floating around from ~97 for a project then titled "dark justice" clearly show it was always meant to be a 3rd person shooter, the E3 footage from 98 looked closer to the final game and probably is how the game would have looked had they hit the original summer 99 release target (different theories on the delays ranging from just that the game wasn't ready yet (multiplayer mode was planned and scrapped sometime during the delay) to delayed due to columbine and the resulting media idiocy towards violent video games) but 2 years later and the game got a number of visual improvements and just looked better, but the gameplay was always a 3d third person game
Where the hell did you get this info? Because it's not true at all. Lol at all those people who gave you thumbs up
No, no it didn't. It was 3D from the get go, they were inspired by Tomb Raider.
There is like no basis for that. Mainly cause it’s not true.
I remember seeing the gba version of Max Payne advertised in comics and magazines at the time and wondering how on earth they could make the game work on a gba. Judging by this video, they seemed to have done it surprisingly well.
I also remember there being a mobile phone version advertised as well, with actual screenshots of it. That one didn't impress quite as much as the gba version
The ghost of Sammy classic Sonic fan i remember a russian homebrew java version of max payne that was sh*t, the gba wins, there is also an Android port that looks nearly as good as the original PC version.
Remember when they ported Dragons lair to the game boy colour? that was insane ruclips.net/video/o-Kzyea53bw/видео.html
The gba version was my first Max payne experience and I loved it
Yeah the mobile version is still on the App Store and it still gets updated which is good.
Brandon x22 they mean an earlier version. mobile technology couldn't run the game back then.
hey, a GBA port that didn't suck!
the Mario Advance games are good and those are ports
V-Rally 3
Poison comparing a port of an snes/nes game is barely similar to this situation
What about Wolfenstein for GBA?
Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper, Doom, Doom 2, Serious Sam, the entire Mario Avance series, 007 Night fire, etc...
This is still just super interesting to me. The GBA was such a random system, it's nuts.
I guess this means a lot, coming from a bolt?
That pun hurt me deeply
Man, both Liberty and Vice City stories were amazing for what they were. I remember seeing China Town, and looking down at my PSP feeling like I took a time machine far into the future.
Liberty City Stories is one of the best GTA games in terms of story and music. Rockstar Leeds really made an amazing thing with the limited PSP hardware. It was a great experience.
Chinatown wars was great too imo
@@theycallthatadefense5051 Never got it to run on No$GBA.
I kinda miss how so many games of this era basically had officially licensed demakes on the GBA. It's not a phenomenon that was exclusive to the GBA, but that era was just the perfect storm for that type of thing, so it got a ton of them. And sure, most of them didn't turn out particularly great, but there was something charming about them regardless. Honestly, you could do a whole series on comparing GBA "demakes" to their console counterparts. Obviously that could expand beyond the GBA like your "5 Graphically Impressive Games" series did, but the GBA is a good place to start.
Yup, I remembered this. For a game like this to be available on a handheld with power so low, I was really impressed when I played it. I don't mind the graphics, the gameplay itself, it feels SOOOOOO GOOD for a GBA game.
Like what, Max Payne
Back in the late 90s when I first spent time on the internet, I remember seeing a series of cool fanart images floating around showing what Goldeneye would have looked like if it was released as a scrolling shooter on the SNES. I always loved the idea of a "demake" like that, and Max Payne on the GBA totally nails it. Everything is recreated in miniature. It's cool seeing pieces of level geometry you remember from the real game, recreated in isometric pixel graphics. And thank GOD they removed those shitty dream sequences. A really cool idea in 2001, but I can't imagine anybody ever wanted to replay them. Another thing Max Payne 2 did much better.
Another handheld "port" I remember fondly is ARMORINES for the GBC. For my money the handheld version is vastly superior to the original.
I personally loved the dream sequences
Platforming on blood trails over a bottomless pit?
No...
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 for the GBA does the same for thing as this Max Payne port did, and is fun as heck
The Examined Life (of Gaming) yea....but that's EXACTLY what mobile apps do now. Make everything look "retro"
It's not weird, it's actually a good game because of the GBA graphics limitations.
tapset47 Fuck you too.
I played through this a few months back. The default control options are a bit wonky, but you can select relative ones that work much better. Still, a super enjoyable game that has no right being as good as it is.
Max Payne was the first game I completed on Hard mode.
CryMor Gaming Was it "really" hard?
No.
Hard Boil you mean lol
Nice
Kushy Kids
Wish max Payne 3 would be ported to switch and PS4 and Xbox 1
Better yet Maybe a Real Max Payne 3 for switch and PS4 and Xbox 1 with Good Game-Play without the worthless Dated Cover BS & a Story that doesn't come across like Fan Faction by a Edge Lord Emo Teenage which ignores the Ending of the 2nd game :P.
Max Payne 3 is great
Tony's Tech Nah, MP1 and 2 were better than 3. This is what happens when something goes in dev hell for such a long time.
or you could actually put the money you use to buy up ports generation after generation to buy a gaming PC and you can enjoy max payne 3 like how PC gamers could right now. game is like 4 dollars on pc.
I wish they would just redo the first max payne game with a new engine. Max payne 3 was dull as hell imo, plus it pretty much felt like a tech demo for gta v's shooting mechanic.
The Jackhammer does actually exist in this game; it's a hidden weapon.
I love the GBA library. Aside from your usual power titles (Zelda/Mario/Metroid/Mario Kart/Sonic etc...), there's tonnes of poor games/shovelware but also several little gems like Max Payne, Driver 2, Doom, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Crash and Spyro games and loads more. Not all winners but many of these shouldn't even exist on the handheld at all (either due to the lack of buttons or even just on a technical basis). And yet, there they are.
The GBA everdrive is one essential pickup as there are some games that are just insanely difficult to find.
Noobsaibot21 Crash and Spyro on the Gba was my first game
Sorry to hear that
@@IEatDogShit Crash Purple, Spyro Orange, the most ironic titles for games EVER
I saw that on the shelf of a retro game store on Friday what a coincidence.
Holy impressive shit! This actually looks amazing!
For such limited hardware, they did a fantastic job with this... It looks good, it looks fun, based on what I saw here, it feels like Max Payne... surprising!
I don't think many people know this, but you don't always have to dive when you use bullet time. If you tap the bullet time button while stationary, you can run and gun in slow motion. When you do a regular bullet time dive move and don't kill all the enemies in front of you by the time it ends, you will likely get blown away as soon as you stand up. Using bullet time the other way, you can stop bullet time when you are ready to, which can often save you in a jam. Also, if you face an enemy and hold the fire button, you will lock on to him and be able to fire and strafe at the same time. The other tip is that enemies that are rolling can't fire back, so save your bullet time for when he gets up.
The semi solution for getting shot off screen is to look around a lot and get ready to hit the bullet time button when you enter a new room. Listen for the music change and gunshots to see if there are enemies out of your view. Good thing is if they are out of view range, their shots usually miss.
This faithful demake of one of my favorite games makes me even more curious about the GBA version of another one of my favorite games, Timesplitters! The developers talked about this unreleased game a couple of times but no one has ever seen it.
I am seeing all your vids keep em up, they're interestingly good, greetings from Argentina
thanks! greetings from australia
I think I played this one before playing Max Payne on the PC. Both were good times.
I have the original game in my game boy, i enjoy your videos, greetings from Guatemala.
I remember playing this on the GBA simulator when I was younger, when I got older I ended up getting a physical copy. I’m still impressed that I felt like I was still in the Max Payne atmosphere as I did playing it on the PC version. I had as much memories with this version as I did with the PC one.
*Haha ,when I played max Payne on the original Xbox...I thought it was Johnny Knoxville from Jack ass!!!🤣
daddyjankie the first time i played i tought it was batman
Bionicle: The Game on GBA is actually amazing. It's a hardcore isometric platformer. Not easy for kids in the target audience to beat!
This is actually impressive. The idea of a demake is always intriguing and this is really a good rendition of it.
I remember being in primary school, and playing this version of max payne in visual boy advance because the actual game wouldn't run on the school computers, fun times, I genuinely enjoyed it.
In Fallout: New Vegas there’s a hotel in the township of Primm called “The Bison Steve”, looks eerily similar to the hotel in Max Payne now that I see it.
I discovered this port a few years ago, and bought it cheap on eBay. I was hooked on it! I was surprised at how faithful and fun it was.
This is still somehow light years ahead of Hong Kong Massacre, despite that game having come out years later for modern consoles.
That game actually looks amazing for a gba game. I think it would honestly make a fun game on PC, as a sort of Max Payne homage. Just update the graphics, copy the mechanics, change the characters and you probably have a Kickstarter success.
It'd be cool to see you look at other ports like this, be they very similar or totally different from the 'main' versions. I know Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear had a GBA version too.
This is one of my favorite GBA games. Gba has a lot of weird 3d ports that aren't the worst, lol.
I never had a GBA, and I've only played a small handful on my original DS, but looking back at games like this it absolutely amazes me the kind of power they were able to get outta' that thing...
I used to own this game,it was actually really impressive that they did something like this, like with the cg cutscenes in kingdom hearts chain of memories, the 2.5D perspective on some levels in gunstar superheroes,or the first person mode on need for speed, this little handheld had some cool games that pushed the hardware for the time... awesome retrospective/review/video ha
I remember getting this 20 yrs ago. I saw it in Best Buy and couldn't understand how it'd be on GBA. It was better than you'd expect.
A very underrated channel i hope you get more subs and now I will sub
Max Payne on the PC was a gamechanger... what an amazing game even after all these years!
I remember playing this game at my grandma's wedding years ago. It was pretty fun but I didn't really play any shooters at the time.
Great port from the looks of things! Surprisingly good in fact.
I’ve fond memories of playing LC & VC Stories on my PSP back in the day. Rockstar Leeds were a fantastic little studio.
It seems that they used the engine for A Sound of Thunder a lot more than just for Max Payne, as the Bionicle GBA game they created seems to be using the same engine. It has 3d polygonal models, isometric environments, etc.
Actually the Jackhammer IS in the game, it's in a secret room in one of the later levels.
This was actually my introduction to Max Payne, so I had a lot of fun recognizing the various levels in full 3D when I played the original game :)
Wasn't too bad. I bought it right after it came out, and remember playing it when I worked night shift.
Really pleases to see your subscriber list growing. I have found your videos really interesting and well made. Great stuff!
i started playing this yesterday and i gotta say, its pretty nice. the controls gets a while to get used to but its so smooth. i had fun
KEEP GOING !!!
I love your videos !
(especially those one where you talk in detail about the gba games ... like this one).
“The only weapons that have been omitted are the Jackhammer and the Sniper Rifle.”
Actually the Jackhammer is present in the game, which is only accessible through the cheat menu once you beat the game for the first time on Fugitive mode (Honestly I have no idea why the devs didn’t decide to give an enemy this weapon or let it spawn somewhere during Part 3).
The Sniper Rifle on the other hand is logic-wise. Why would you need a Sniper Rifle when you can almost see every enemy around the corners of the map.
there is a jack hammer in this game but its well hidden, if i remember correctly theres a photo you shoot with a switch behind it in one of the later levels, it leads to a secret room, This guns beastly
I'm glad you cover video games as you do so very well.
This was one of those mind boggling experience for me back in the day, but yeah if anyone interested, I would suggest to play the original first. This is not a masterpiece for GBA, but one of the technical marvels no doubt.
Watching this reminded me of that die hard trilogy game for the PS1. Good times...
Max Payne was my favorite game on GBA. I stuck in the lab, but after hundreds tryings i manage to avoid this flame or explosion or whatever. And it was the only game on my game boy that actually had savings.
They still both look visually appealing af. Both pc/ps2 and the gba version!
The GBA has some amazingly impressive games, it is probably my favorite system to collect for (I still like the PS2 more, but it doesn't have the same "how on earth did they do this" factor). My most recent pickup is a game called Wings, which is a WWI flight simulator for the GBA!
It's kinda sad that companies don't do wierd ports of their games anymore. I absolutely dig this kind of stuff
Not only have I been binging your videos lately, but I've been purchasing a lot of the games I remember, and even some I never played.
I now purchase these games from a local (New York, US) game store, but I used to get them from a US retailer with a nice online selection (estarland for those interested)
I think a retailer similar to that would see a worthwhile return of repeat customers if they sponsored you.
Just my stoned out 2cents
Awesome video, fun fact, you can play as the gba 3d model in max payne 3 as a skin.
I LOVED Max Payne for GBA as a kid! There are so many awesome hidden gems like this on the GBA, probably my favorite library of any system.
Its a unique port, the isometric view makes shooting a little hard to do but GBA limitations understandable but this port is unique
Dude, 2nd vid I see from u and I gotta say well done
man GBA keeps surprising me.
The game lasts about 4 hours, hey that's longer than most COD games single plauers
caravanning Most COD Singleplayers are 6-7 hours long though
Most single COD players only last like 30secs.
Yeah, maybe playing WW2 on the easiest difficulty will be around 4 hours. That's about it. CoD campaigns are pretty good about length.
But whatever, it's cool to hate on CoD and critically thinking it in a positive way is pretty much a thought crime.
Judge Judy Sex Dungeon don’t act like all the hate they get is unwarranted
For gba this game is a pure awesomness. I like that they removed sequences in the port. I guess, that's because it is unpossible to realize long-range sniper sections within the GBA restrictions.
Also after beating the game you will get nice set of cheats: unlimited ammo and stuff like that. Worth mentioning that those cheats adds few weapons from the original version of Max Payne, including jackhammer shotgun, which somehow didn't make it to the GBA version itself.
Fun Fact: This version of Max Payne has higher review score or rating than the gta defective edition.
This one also doesn't look visually ugly unlike that other defaecation
Wow I can't believe just how much of this game I actually remember despite not playing it since my junior year in high school
The GBA really was an incredible little machine. Full of surprises like this. To make a full demake of a game like Max Payne in 2D essentially with 3D elements is incredible. Even with all the cuts to it the fact that it's got 30 minutes of pretty decent spoken dialogue is simply incredible. I miss ports like this.
The GBA version was one of those games that really pushed what the system could do. It looks even better on an emulator because the GBA's screen actually couldn't keep up with it.
I think this is the first time I've heard on this channel that a studio managed jumpstart a career from a port
This is great =)
Top 10 platformers on GBA!
Cooper Top Ten Blowjobs From Drunk Chicks!
Sonic Advance wins.
It’s funny because I remember Max Payne on GBA looking like Max Payne 1 and 2 on console 🤣 This version is actually what kick started my love for the franchise
the jackhammer is actually in the game! i dont know why buts its way more hidden than in the original game, i managed to find it in a secret room opened by a button behind a painting, im not sure how it works but im pretty sure enemies start spawning with it when you find it
Fantastic video! An extremely interesting port of a great game, thanks for sharing it with us!
Played this version before the original, blew my mind to how much more content I was missing, but this was still a good game.
I actually finished mp on gba first and then on pc and i liked it in both platforms
I recently got myself Max Payne on the GBA and this is the most fun I had in recent memory. The gameplay, the art style, the voiced comic panel style cutscenes are all here. It may have some cut content like missing chapters and missing weapons such as the sniper rifle, but this is still an impressive demake for the GBA. Oh yeah I almost forgot, the fight music theme in this game is straight fire! 🔥 It may seem to be an odd choice to use bongos at first during adrenaline-pumped sequences but it just works! Thank you Mobius Entertainment and Rockstar Games for bringing such a beloved classic into the GBA! 🥰

It is now automatically the best version of Max Payne
OMG this makes me want a Silent Hill game in this style sooo badly
This was actually my first Max Payne. We couldn't afford a ps2 back then and I Damn well finished this
Reverse-Engineering of Video Games to play on Video Game Counsels that were thought to have not as good processing power, however, with possibilities of cyber infrastructure of a nation, is this device reliant on external computer processing, and the processer is used for playing a "streaming" game within a 5D Cyber Environment.
Very fun (a bit short) rendition of Max Payne. Glad I picked this version up.
I remember before I had my gaming laptop the best games I could play would be PS1 era (re3 and such) on my chromebook, the frame rate would be quite low so I had to resort to GBA games as my main source of non console (FIFA, UFC, COD etc) fun, and oh my god this game was one of my favourites to play and its actually amazing how they managed to keep the core mechanics and fun there with the isometric approach.
The end of the game being hard isn't even really a con. Yes it's frustrating to die from off screen, but enemies spawn in the same location every time. It's the exactly same style of difficulty and "learning from mistakes" that hit titles like Dark Souls have.
I this is somewhat unrelated to the video but have you ever played the GBA version of Driver 3? The graphics on it are really good on it and it almost looks like the console versions.
I have! I'm a huge fan of Driver and have played a lot of the GBA versions of 2 and 3, would definitely make a good similar vid to this :)
I am really amazed that some one actually made this on the GBA and it looks and plays good on a simple handheld console. It really goes to show how much the GBA surprises me in every way possible. It really makes me want to have a GBA.
GBA was a damn good portable console for its time. i remember playing some good looking games on there like broken sword, crash bandicoot and spyro.
Minimme! Do you think you could do a look and review at "Jade Empire"? Biowares little eastern martial art RPG. Was a blast as a kid and would love to hear your thoughts on it!
I've been meaning to give it a try :)
I've played the GBA version and I have to say, it's pretty good, the top down camera is a little confusing at some times but once you get the hang of it, it's acceptable.
I think i had this lol can't recall, crazy times... it was the early 2000's... we were all stoked on Columbus.
remenber playing this in the gba emulator, what a inmmersive game, the ost its outstanding too
Good Review!
I’m a huge Max Payne fan. I’ve known about this game for years and always ignored it. But now I’ve gone and bought myself a physical version lol, some definite good times to be had come July 7th lol
That squint still cracks me the f*** up lmao. I never could take it seriously.
This game is sort of an inside joke between me and my older brother because he's a big Max Payne fan and he saw a screenshot and said it looked like a weird chess game. Now I want to get him a GBA and a copy...
I actually like demakes. Can't explain it really. There's something about playing a lesser version and trying to make it (to my self) as big as the original somehow. My favotite demake for the GBA is Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance ♡
You're wrong about the jackhammer, you can have this shotgun if you choose the cheat all weapons. This mode is unlockable after beating the game.
The game is really fun but the only thing weird about the GBA version is that sometimes the objective doesn't seem super clear.
I beat this game more than 10 times as a kid. Really good and music so good.
Great video =D
ProtoMario hey proto
Shut up
Minnime episode on A Sound of Thunder GBA would be fantastic.
