Stand alone episodes are cool option that still needs to exist. everything being so serialized makes these huge commitments to these giant 10 hour long movies that end up being canceled after season 1. The fact is that not every show has Breaking Bad level of premise so they stretch arcs out far to long with even longer gaps in between seasons. There are always the front runners of a trend that set the stage for what follows. Breaking Bad wasn’t the first, but it was one of the first to do it exceedingly well AND connect into the culture on a deep level. We’re still early in this era of tv shows, but I can see it getting old fast because so many shows are either not good or instantly cancelled. I just want good stuff, I don’t care what form they take, and there are still good shows being made.
Very good and true conversation. I’m 76 and grew up on that “formula” tv, (and left it behind). Even feature films have to spin the story in about 90 minutes, ok to a point, but along came HBO and say Deadwood, then the magnificent Breaking Bad, that is where the quality viewing really started. A minor incident in say episode 3 may turn up consequences in episode 6 in the next series, those are the plot challenges I really appreciate , it gives the shows so much more depth than the old tv or even today’s Hollywood theatre films. To me it’s all about $ risk, so much money to make a big film , Oh , we can’t afford to take any real risks, but these new tv series seem quite willing and as a result have come up with some absolute gems.
It took 50 years but people finally realized TV could do literary storytelling better than movies. A lot of classic novels were originally serialized in weekly publications in the 19th century than later all the chapters were published in a book.
I grew up watching CHiPs, and loved it. Looking back, I know I wouldn’t now. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, so my family would drive on the 118 and 210 freeway in San Fernando, where they filmed most of the scenes, every day. I also loved that as a kid.
Not really, quality over quantity. If you’re everywhere nobody is looking forward to seeing you. That’s why people don’t like the rock in movies because we’ve seen it 100 times
@GritsAndEggsPod I think that's more due to the fact that the Rock can't really act beyond what he's done so far. Cranston doesn't have this problem. I'm sure you'd be hard pressed to find two of Cranston's characters that are as similar to each other as a lot of Rock's characters.

I love how old people here can't admit that Gen Z does have better taste in media. There's so much good content out there, and if all you see is crap, the problem is you.
As someone who's late millennial/early Gen Z age, I honestly have no idea what people my age want with entertainment. 90% of everything coming out these days is either some regurgitated retelling of a classic story that has nothing to do with the original source, or it's the next superhero movie that's been beaten to death for years now. My only demand is that the shows and movies feature interesting, original stories with a cast of actors/actresses who are passionate enough to nail the roles. Seems like every decent movie/show these days flies under the radar, while the crap nobody cares about makes all the headlines. It's only a matter of time before the current trend collapses.
I don't think that's Gen Z. Gen X and Millennials wanted the music and films and tv to have more to say. Gen Z just has social media which makes it seem they want it. When I was a teenager we had message boards. The last three generations all want elevated entertainment
What is elevated entertainment? Many Zoomers grew up on the MCU and they think those are great movies. Many of them can't put the phone down to watch adult movies like The Godfather or Deerhunter.
Counterpoint: Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad are popular amongst zoomers, shows that are the opposite of instant gratification. Also conveniently forgetting that every era had their fair share of shitty media people loved from the several -xploitation movies to trashy cliché rom-coms. And for every Pink Floyd and Nirvana we got, we get dozens of Jefferson Airplanes and other disposable music acts people listened to. Just like how for zoomers, they get dozens of Gunna's and Imagine Dragon's for every Kendrick Lamar or Kanye West (before he went off his rocker)
When something is mainstream popular, and then certain elements get a lot of attention for being special even though I am personally quite used to them, it makes me realize that common mainstream media does not explore what you're discussing enough. My prime example is Thanos. People were simply not used to a villain having motivations, bordering on antivillain.
But we also have the internet and have access to every piece of film or television ever made. I hate how older generations think we (gen z) are shallow in our entertainment consumption when many of us have good taste in film and TV and are willing to learn if we dont know enough.
@@BishopWalters12 I mean, the same was true for older generations too. There are young people that seek out art films, classics, etc. from every generation. In the 20th century, boomer, gen X, etc. all just vegetated watching TV or other mindless pass-times, just like millenials gen z just watch youtube video and tune out
@@BishopWalters12 many of us are already in our early 20s or reaching that age. Also are you gen z in making that conclusion sir 🤔? I notice older generations call gen z zoomers, we ourselves don't really use that term to describe ourselves.
Also, not only nowadays there are more entertainment options (i.e. quantity in the movies section), there are also new entertainment experiences which didn't exist before. Social media, producing content (which is entertaining by itself), hyperrealistic videogames in this world or other universes, haptics, VR, AR, and the list goes on. A person who has had all these experiences immediately knows that they are spending time doing 'x' while they could be doing 'y', 'z', 'r,', 'q', etc. I think the biggest accomplishment is to go mainstream, because it usually means its something universally liked, regardless of its form: Breaking Bad as a dark series, Malcolm as a comedy, Conan podcast, etc!.
I used to agree with these views on television and movies, that it should aspire, go deep, break ground and raise the bar. But now I feel like entertainment is entertainment. Be it high brow or predictable schmaltz. If you find it entertaining then it's all good. There's room enough for award winning fare as well as ridiculous cop series that make no sense. If there is an audience that finds it enjoyable then there's a place for it.
They want more from their entertainment but will watch 10 hour's streams of women sleeping watching gamers play games watching people sitting in their led light coverd rooms asking for donations sure as hell dont seem like they need alot to be entertained tho 😂
I completely disagree with that statement, I think its just the same, but its happening in a time where, there are a lot of changes, and they occur so fast, that It's hard to catch up, and the thing about Gen Z liking more Quality over quantity, it's kind of a fallacy, because there are so much reboots, and remakes, and reimaging of movies and or TV series, that has become absurd, Disney being the example on this matters.
I can't agree with that statement at all. For me what I've seen is the rise of tv shows from all over the world. Now watching US shows is very rare for me. We can be thankful to the streaming networks that now we can watch TV series from all over the world.
OMG! I remember the Playboy pinup of Kathy Shower,...I must have been in high school. Playboy magazine was such a big deal back then, for horny teenage boys. The magazines were under lock and key, at so called drug stores. You had to prove your were old enough to be able to buy them. I recall going with a buddy to "the bad part of our town",....a low rent neighborhood, where specific "men's books stores" and strip joints were. A grumpy store clerk would shout out to the patrons, reminding them it "wasn't a damn Library", and to quit pawing the merchandise, ( and drooling on the photo arrays), pay yo' money and git!....lol
If they won't take the same old dish, then why does everyone?? There literally isn't any show or movie out there that didn't copy off something else. It literally is the same old dish, but with a different name. There is absolutely no such thing as originality anymore.
@@BishopWalters12 that is such a bad take, there have been more shows and movies made in the last decade than in the last two and by no means have you seen all of them

Exactly, this is the generation that will riot at college just because they don't like a speaker or get a teacher fired for not using whatever made up pronoun is the trend of the month.
Personally, I want movies to be created from the heart as an expression, to have amazing character arcs about characters we can identify and love and hate and think about and reflect on, not media that puts ideology first to try and not be cancelled. A gen z member
this is definitely not what bryan and conan were talking about when they brought up gen z demanding more in their media take ur damn politics out of here bud, this is a comedy podcast

We’re the ones watching that stuff. I personally love to binge reactions/discussions/reviews on RUclips after finishing a show I really like because people will often have fun pieces of trivia that further extend the show and insights that I missed on my first watch.
If only bryan knows the gen z kids on reddit regularly post how much they hate walter white because he's the exact opposite of their superhero characters 😂
I just want a movie or a show where they aren't pushing a narrative because "it's relevant for the times we live in". That's something they didn't have in the 80's and 90's, till even early 2000's.
lmao a narrative has been pushed in every decade since movies and TV were created. It's the biggest propaganda tool. 80s and 90s films had narratives of American exceptionalism
@@THETRIVIALTHINGS if somebody has to ask that, then they've never seen a movie from those decades or the themes align with their world view, which would explain being outraged and triggered about a perceived change in filmmaking. Nearly every movie in those decades that featured war, espionage, foreign affairs, America as a foreign power, America as the military hero is an example. Hollywood has been the unofficial propaganda arm of the US since the 1940s. On the flip side, critically acclaimed movies like John Singleton's Boyz n the Hood (1991) transformed how black lives were portrayed on screen.
I've been thinking a lot about this recently and Cranston really hit the nail on the head on this point.
@@BishopWalters12 clearly you have no idea what you're talking about because marvel is most popular with millennials lmao
@@mackenzie1845 That's incorrect, buttercup
TV now just became more like movies from 1970s.
Hey, why is there no Turkish in automatic translation?
Conan is an expert in metalphors
A sign of a great comedian.
When something is mainstream popular, and then certain elements get a lot of attention for being special even though I am personally quite used to them, it makes me realize that common mainstream media does not explore what you're discussing enough.
My prime example is Thanos. People were simply not used to a villain having motivations, bordering on antivillain.
queue Moltar on Space Ghost.. "mmh , chips"
TV will never be the same as it used to. Movies too. It's all just sequels and superhero comics.
Maybe it's just getting old, but.. it's harder to get excited to see a new movie in the theaters like it used to
Well, Gen Z also watch 50 identical Marvel movies every year...
-Signed a member of Milleniel/Gen Z
But we also have the internet and have access to every piece of film or television ever made. I hate how older generations think we (gen z) are shallow in our entertainment consumption when many of us have good taste in film and TV and are willing to learn if we dont know enough.
@@known_film4081 Most Zoomers don't want to watch movies made for adults or read books for adults.
@@BishopWalters12 I mean, the same was true for older generations too. There are young people that seek out art films, classics, etc. from every generation. In the 20th century, boomer, gen X, etc. all just vegetated watching TV or other mindless pass-times, just like millenials gen z just watch youtube video and tune out
@@supwititproductionz3738 Nope, Gen-Z are the most brain dead and useless generation.
@@BishopWalters12 many of us are already in our early 20s or reaching that age. Also are you gen z in making that conclusion sir 🤔? I notice older generations call gen z zoomers, we ourselves don't really use that term to describe ourselves.
Geez Cones, love you dearly but you gotta let Bryan spin the yarn once in a while.

I'm like, "No Bill."
"and I'm like, no bill."
Metal is comedy gold.
A superb podcast.
Modern TV/film is just the mirror opposite of Old TV. It's predictable.
If they won't take the same old dish, then why does everyone?? There literally isn't any show or movie out there that didn't copy off something else. It literally is the same old dish, but with a different name. There is absolutely no such thing as originality anymore.
This comment definitely isn't original
They're out there but I will agree that the 2010's and 2020's so far are less creative compared to previous decades.
@@BishopWalters12 that is such a bad take, there have been more shows and movies made in the last decade than in the last two and by no means have you seen all of them
@@MegaPaco04 I can't help it if the truth upsets you, what stats are you going by to say more shows and movies get created now compared to the 90s for example?
Gen Z isn’t smarter, we’re just louder. Look at the top 10 shows on Netflix at any given moment, it’s filled with garbage.
Stranger Things, Squid Game, The Queen's Gambit, The Crown, Ozark, Cobra Kai, Black Mirror. Garbage?
@@imalwaysright those are some of the exceptions (and cobra Kai is absolutely garbage)
Well, you are lucky then. Check classic cinema, you have a lifetime of good movies.

How many people youtube'd Bryan Cranston in CHiPS after this?

If anyone wants proof that younger people demand more from their movies/shows, just look at the ridiculous number of video essays that pop up on RUclips whenever something new comes out. We’re the ones watching that stuff. I personally love to binge reactions/discussions/reviews on RUclips after finishing a show I really like because people will often have fun pieces of trivia that further extend the show and insights that I missed on my first watch.
