    5:35 Great video as always, Jarrett.
    I love my IKEA Kallax storage shelves which are tailor-made for records and one trick I use to hide some record clutter is to take one record out of every section and display it in front of the other 75 to 80 records behind it. That way, I can enjoy the cover art and change it as often as I'd like. :)

    *asking for a friend...*

    • @uhfch2358
      @uhfch2358 3 года назад +6

      Yes, but you may risk the possibility of ruining the record. That being said, I’ve had a fair amount of success using a blow dryer (not a heat gun) on high heat. Heat the affected area for about 30 secs. Then quickly sandwich the record between two clean, flat pieces of MDF board. This method will give more control than putting the record in the oven. If you need to flatten more, you can do it as many times as necessary. You may not get it perfect, but in most cases it will be playable.

  • @PCFixer
    @PCFixer 3 года назад +31

    Make sure you orient the Kallax the right way; i.e. you want your records on the "long pieces" that are the SHELVES and NOT on the shorter pieces which are the "walls" only supported by the dowels! I've seen horrible images of Kallax shelves that have COLLAPSED due to too much weight on them when they've been setup the wrong way! Other than that -- the Kallax is great!

    • @rasul01
      @rasul01 3 года назад

      I don't understand what you mean with storing things on long pieces instead of short pieces of the shelf. What does that mean exactly?

    • @logosrising4784
      @logosrising4784 2 года назад +2

      There are short boards, used as vertical divider walls to the storage unit, and long boards which are used for the horizontal shelving.
      It is very important to use the longer boards as the shelving to place and safely hold the records in place.
      To do otherwise invites the risk of the storage unit collapsing, and damaging the records.
      Keep’em spinning, be blessed.

    I reached the 600 LP milestone recently. I''m using a Kallax (2x5), Bestå (also from Ikea) and a couple of old port wine crates for my 12". As for my 7 and 10 inches, I had a couple of small crates built for my 7" which sit on top of my Bestå, which is turn sits atop of the Kallax, and the 10" fit perfectly in the hifi cabinet, where I also store a few odd size CD cases. My biggest headache for the past few months is finding a decent solution for store my cassettes.

    I currently have 17 records. I store 6 of them on the wall constantly and the others in a wooden box close to my TT. The nicest thing about that box is that is from my dad's old audio setup and it's at least 30-40 yo. It even has a support on top to store tapes/CDs. I usually store them behind the sleeve to minimize the ring formation on the front of the sleeve.

    I went with the KALLAX when I moved my collection 3 years ago. The record cabinets I had built years before were too high for the new room that my records are stored in and, as you said, the KALLAX from Ikea has cubbies that are just the right size and with the variety of configurations available work out perfectly for my record and reel tape collections. A total of 80 cubbies with 70 filled with LP's (over 4200) and 10 filled with tape reels. Up against a wall they work great and were easily bolted together at the back to form a solid storage system. I found 15 clear with red overlapped lidded containers that work great for storing and transporting my 7" vinyl disks (about 125 per container). And then there are my CD's and DVD's that I store on Ikea Journalist solid metal shelves (sadly no longer available) which are the strongest Ikea shelves I've ever purchased. Great look and easily disassembled /transported /and re-assembled. I would have bought and used more of them for my record collection if they had still been available because of there strength, durability and modern look.

    At present I have about 900 records, maybe a little more. I build myself a cabinet out of wood planks or boards. Also called shelfing boards from Lowes. The cabinet is 38 inches high, 16 inches wide, and 46 inches in length. I built it to have a top shelf and a bottom shelf. The top shelf is completely full of records. The bottom shelf is almost half full. The wood planks or board are half inch thick. I stained the cabinet a Red Mahogany. I used steel braces on the inside of the cabinet. It is strong enough to my Music Hall turntable/isolation pad and Pioneer RT-1020L reel to reel tape deck on the very top of the cabinet.

    A note on wood crates... Make sure the grain is completely flat, sanded down on the inside. If it's too coarse, it will chaffe the outer sleeves if you dont have plastic sleeves. So just sand it down, put down some paper on the bottom and use sleeves

    Absolutely do not get the larger kallax unless you plan on heavily reinforcing it and/or don't intend to fill it more than half full of records or other heavy objects. I've seen so many get destroyed under the weight of the records. They are very cheap (as with literally everything at Ikea) and essentially held together by dowels; dowels and the thin wood that makes up the cubicles aren't exactly stable enough to hold the amount of records you can fill one of those with.
    I'd say maximum would be the 2x4 cubes sitting horizontally instead of vertically for better weight distribution (plus this leaves a good amount of space on top for the player and speakers) but you'd be asking for trouble if you try to fill one of the 5x5 cubicles without a ton of reinforcements.

    A few thoughts, Jarrett...Not all milk crates are the exact size of records...The Supreme Crates that The Container Store put out were just right...There may be other companies who put out similarly sized ones...I have a few old LP- and 45'-sized Platter Paks from the 50's and 60's that work, although I would stay away from the wire racks and Disk-Go-Cases from the same era unless you were just looking to use them for decoration...There are antique metal dairy crates that might work, too...There are also the newer cardboard boxes that come with lids via sites like Bags Unlimited, BCW, and Sleeve City, for example...There are some liquor and wine boxes that might also fit the size of records...And then, there are ones you can buy and put together from the office supply stores...A chest or an ottoman with internal storage might also work for the LP's...And then, don't forget the metal racks such as the ones Urban Outfitters has put out and the LPBin system, where the records are front-facing...You could also pilfer some used racks if your favorite record store happens to go out of business...Record album frames are another thought...A cheaper version of the Kallax might be the Better Homes & Gardens cubes that Walmart sells, as well...Finally, if you're into the DIY thing, you could custom make something to fit your individual needs or repurpose an old cabinet or shelving unit from the thrift store...There are way more options out there that what you've listed, so it's good to keep all thoughts in mind...

    On the subject of the Ikea Kallax and the look alike Better Homes & Gardens Cube Storage, it's a great idea to cut a piece of hardboard or pegboard to size and attach it to the back of the unit. This serves two purposes by adding great stability to the unit and prevents the records from sliding out the back. Also, once you have that in place you can take a pool noodle and cut pieces the width of the cube. Tuck those into the back and your albums will rest against it and not disappear into the back of the unit.

    Been throwing my euro light cases around for 14 years. They are lighter a little cheaper. The odyssey cases I have also. Heavy I mean back bracking heavy. But I could drop it out the back of my truck at 50 miles a hour. But I'm very happy with my 33 dollar euro lights.

    Is that a Carpenters vinyl box set I see on your shelf? I saw a video made by someone who purchased the Box Set and the records were very warped and had many defects. Universal was suppose to fix the problem around 2018, did they? To your knowledge?

    I've been using the Better Home and Gardens 2x2 shelf for a few years and it's really great! It's a bit easier to find if you're like me and don't have an Ikea in your area. I kinda need a new one though... because I'm running out of room on the shelf I do have! :)

    I preserve old media as a hobby like cassettes and vinyl records and I transfer them to compact disc, a couple weeks ago I bought a vinyl record that was new in factory sealed it was a circus record it was called, a day at the circus with Mr. singing ringmaster Harold Ronk, he was the first singing ringmaster for Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus from 1951-1981.

    Mile Long Records has its physical store where I live. Its the only record store that I can ride my bike to, since i dont have a car. Its a little pricy compared to walmart or target and it mostly has older music (Im more into music 2009+) but its nice since it has some records that stopped being sold in walmart/target for retail price 😎

    I'm a DnB DJ so naturally I have about 12 DNB records ATM. I also have about 6 other 12 inch records and a few 45s as well. Both in Vinyltonic cases (not great but I'm going to get something better for DJing at some point lol - maybe the odyssey cases if I can afford them lol).

    What do you suggest regarding outer sleeves if one has a boxset case? Are they safe or still liable to get damaged? Should you just take the individual albums out of the boxset case and cover them with outer sleeves?

    How many records do I have? I haven't counted lately. But I would guess it to be around 3000 give or take a few hundred. Storage? Hand built cases made from knotty pine and stained a dark brown. Would love to show them to you some day.

    I've watched your videos for months and slowly been collecting vinyl every month or so. However I've never owed a turntable until yesterday, I got the Piccadilly GPO and I'm enjoying it so much. Although my records sound extremely clear I'm missing the bass from a Bluetooth speaker I used. Would there be any salutation to increase it just a little as I play metal mostly by adding something or a way to adjust some of the settings? thanks in advance.
