  • In today's video, Tom will be showing us some very rare factory sample cutaway's. For mechanically minded collectors, or those who like to collect unique pistols, we believe these samples will fascinate you. As dealer samples, or training tools for the military, not many of these historical piece remain. So, finding six in one collection makes this video worth watching.

Thank you for this special video. The Walther P5 is the second modell cutaway. The first P5 cutaway models came without any numbers, the second P5 cutaway model came with an “S” following 3 digit numbers. The thirth and latest P5 cutaway model came with “AS” folowing 3 digit numbers. The “S” stands for “Schnitt(-model)”. These cutaway models were not intend for dealers or for resale, but for police instruction classes only. About 400 cutaway models were produced in slight different models. In my +40 years LE career I found these cutaway models only in The Netherlands and some German police agencies. Extremely rare to find in private collections. Many thanks for all your videos and kind regards from The Netherlands.

On an old episode of American Pickers someone had a cutaway of a Browning machine gun, I just don't remember if they bought it or not.

Thanks for this interesting video. I've never seen a cut-away of a gun (besides animations). It seems they would be great for training and troubleshooting. And it sure makes you appreciate the engineering and intricate inner workings of the firearm.

I have seen numerous cut aways through the years. A friend had a cutaway Lee Enfield. It was pretty cool.
Legacy should get some of those oversized cutaways the military use to use for training

Thank you for this episode. For me, the most important thing is the design of the weapon. My collection is not large, but each piece works on a different principle. That's why this episode was very interesting to me.

I went to the antique arms show in Nashville way back in the mid 90s they had a Winchester rifle display. Giant wood cabinet with every lever action for that year with a cut away rifle in the top. Price was like 1.5 million back then. I bet this still survives somewhere and you could probably find it. Pre dates that broom handle by 10 or 15 years

I rather like cutaways, they are often a training aid, whether that be for armourers in the case of firearms, or mechanics in the case of engines.

I had a Lee Enfield 303 Mk4 cut away and unfortunately it was confiscated by the police. There was no way you would ever attempt to fire it but I guess the police didn’t see it that way.

It always amazes me that the red paint adhered so well on Walther pistols.
What is the scoop on the paint?

I assume the "S" in the serial number stands for "Schnittmodell" as they are called in German.

I collect Luger cutaways (6 so far) but I also have a 1911 cutaway. I even have 2 of the original 50 Persian cutaways from their prewar contract. Unfortunately they are getting too expensive for me to expand my collection but I keep trying.😢

I'd imagine you could still technically shoot it if there's no barrel parts missing on some of them.
Not shoot it as in carrying it for defense etc, but no gas is going to be escaping from the in tact barrel so the bullet will function properly & I'd imagine it would cycle properly too.

Even though these are non-functioning I believe the ATF treats these the same as firearm
