  • Are you one of the many vinyl collectors that have been patiently waiting to add the Smashing Pumpkins’ iconic 90’s albums to your record collection? Both Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness were recently repressed for the first time in nearly two years. You would think that would be fantastic for everyone, right?!
    The reality is there is so much pent up demand for albums like these it’s creating a frenzy for buyers due to confusion around timing and availability. In this episode of Talking About Records we expose the reasons why your order with a big-box online retailer may get cancelled, why your independent record store may not get any at all, and what you as a consumer can do to navigate these uncharted waters for future reissues.
    ✶ Talking About Records is presented by NTX Vinyl, a local, independent, chain of community based record stores in the DFW area.

    This is how you kill the vinyl resurgence . When you make titles too hard to get or too expensive the new people you are relying on to grow the industry just get frustrated and leave. Jack White was right in calling out the major labels to create more pressing plants and take some of the responsibility in growing the industry.

    • @melovemusic69
      @melovemusic69 2 года назад +2

      Personally I would rather you leave as it was much more enjoyable without you new people that took a "pandemic" to get into it and enjoy what we had been enjoying for 20+ years.

    • @mattlupu152
      @mattlupu152 2 года назад +3

      @@melovemusic69 I respectfully disagree with your thinking. I remember when I first got into music and records 40+ years ago everything that came out was on vinyl.For me it is the best way to listen to music and I want it to be like before cds when you could get anything you want on vinyl. The only way that happens is when you have a lot of people buying it and that only happens with new people. For me 20 years ago was the dark ages because most things couldn't be bought on vinyl or a crappy sounding record would cost a fortune. Today I am buying albums I never could in the 90's and the rise in audiophile sounding albums makes this a resurgence I hope continues.

    • @mandomtz
      @mandomtz 2 года назад +1

      Yes. The music industry is allowing greed to kill their only lifeline. When teenagers (probably the largest consumer demographic for music) are priced out of buying music, there is NO Industry. The industry can't rely solely on well monied boomers and gen-xer's buying classic rock reissues forever. Eventually ppl will get cynical and see through the trite FOMO marketing campaigns as well. The skyrocketing prices in tandem with frustration of titles perpetually going "out of print" due scalpers buying up all the stock and selling it at a mark-up will push more and more ppl to streaming. Major label's will not invest in thier own pressing plants because it is NOT profitable for them to do so. It's too easy to max out the few remaining plants with their massive orders and big money. They see the current vinyl boom for what it is: a semi-luxury consumer trend that will not last forever. This is why big box stores may carry records but refuse to devote a lot of floor/shelve space to vinyl. They know it's a passing consumer trend for most of ppl currently going nuts.

      @@mandomtz Great comment and sadly I have to agree with you on all accounts and believe you are spot on.Unfortunately since the 80’s businesses have just looked short term and like a parasite bleed anything they can without any effort on their part. That is why we have these trends that constantly come and go. I believe certain trends like this that have some substance could be nutured and have some place, but maybe not as big in our culture. In this current atmosphere we probably will never know.

    Thanks for talking more about the business side of things. It's really unfair that big box gets the quantities they order quicker than smaller stores. Wish it was all done with percentages... like everyone gets 10% of their order; but really, that probably wouldn't go over very well either. But I'm mostly sad that the smaller shops ,who are just trying to make a living and stock their inventory for their tried and trued customers, get the shaft. America really isn't a capitalist nation any more... it's all about the corporations now. Thanks for putting up the great fight for it all! :-). Just subbed.

    at least they are still being reprinted, I do not mind waiting. luckily I got Siamese Dreams when it was 1st reissued in 2014. But people of a certain age (children of 60s-70s) remember having to wait for things ( the Wizard of Oz being shown on TV 1 x a year - and if you weren't there on that day, you missed it and had til wait till next year to watch it). Only recently no one can seem to wait for anything. I am looking forward to being able to get Mellon Collie box set - but I will wait until I can get it for reg retail price. Thanks for great video. One thing I will say about waiting is that it makes one appreciate it a little more, than always having everything at their fingertips.

    I purchased a reissue copy of Siamese Dream about four years ago when my local record store had a 33 1/3 % off sale for their 33rd anniversary. It was a one day sale. It was selling for $50 brand new then. I bought about 8 records for $220. No regrets about any of those purchases. I’ll probably never pick up Mellon Collie on vinyl. I’d rather pick up Gish or their greatest hits compilation on vinyl whenever it gets. If I’m being honest though, if I never own any other of their catalog other than Siamese Dream on vinyl, I’ll be good.

    Siamese Dream is my favorite album of all time and though I already have a copy I hope it becomes more available eventually so it can be accessible to others who love it as much as I do. A similar thing happened when Slipknot reissued some of their albums, particularily Iowa which has been out of print since 2001 and finally got reissued and almost instantly sold out. I ordered it but my order got cancelled a week later because it sold out but I found some on Walmarts website and I’m hoping I get my order.

    I've been collecting vinyl seriously for almost 15 years now. In the past i used to pick up new releases and represses very casually. Sometimes i would grab them immediately, other times i would wait and pick them up eventually. That worked for a while, then about 4-5 years ago, i started noticing these releases starting to to disappear more quickly. If i didn't pick up a release in the first few months, I'd probably have to wait until it was released again, or pay big bucks on the secondary market. That had obviously gotten worse, today i pre-order multiple copies of a release i want from several retailers, hoping I'll get one copy.

    It also doesn't help that the original label, Virgin, went out of business, Billy had to get the rights back for the SP catalog, and now they don't have a label and have to release everything independently. Probably had to prioritize Atum. I can find new copies of Sublime's Greatest Hits, which was also out of print until recently too, but SP are in a difficult position right now, and really need a new album to sell well to get money flow and label interest.

    • @NinjaMatt2201
      @NinjaMatt2201 Год назад

      Well, physical copies of Atum sold well and got high on the physical sales only chart, but streaming numbers aren't nearly as good. Boy do SP fans hate every new album they release. It's not enough for them to release just a good album like Atum anymore, fans were spewing hatred of the album before you could listen to it. Their next album will have to be better than Siamese Dream and Melon Collie for them to admit it's almost as good as Machina.

So I sent an email to customer care requesting that they still send me Siamese Dream, because being in Canada, their policy states that they cannot ship unless the order is completely fulfilled. Customer care then responds to me and says that I, as in me, has it wrong, that Siamese Dream is out of stock, and do I still want Mellon Collie? If one is really into the music, just has to have that Smashing Pumpkins album, then one buys the CD and waits patiently for the LP to become available. That's what I do these days. I have no tolerance or patience for the "frenzy" and all that. Life is too short for that kind of collecting mentality. It just boggles my mind that Gish isn't one of the more desired titles. Maybe it's just the timing as to when I got into them, but I find Gish to be their best album.

      Agreed. GISH is a better album than Melon Collie which is bursting with filler and few tired radio singles.

      Love Gish as well. It's been in print a lot more recently so much easier to find. That, and it didn't have the big hits like the others so it flies under the radar on the mainstream level. Fantastic album though!

    Why can't we open up more pressing plants to help with the demand?

    • @NTXVinyl
      @NTXVinyl  2 года назад

      It's a logical question to ask. But who is "we"?
      You're talking about a major investment in a niche hobby that may or may not sustain. Serious time, effort, and of course MONEY would need to be invested. But even more critical than all those is the knowledge of HOW to do it. Presses themselves are not easy to manufacture, and the vast majority of the people who knew the art of this craft are long gone from the industry.
      The major labels would be the ones to solve this problem (as Jack White has pleaded for) but the likelihood of of them doing so is very slim.

  • @Matasky2010

    It really shouldn't be that difficult for the pressing plants/distributors(?) to produce what's on their upcoming pressing schedules.

    The first time these SP albums were repressed they sat around on shelves' for about 3-4 years before selling out at retail. They skyrocketed in value during the pandemic when more and more ppl latched onto the hobby are started panic buying album due to stimulus checks and boredom and the need for a new indoor hobby based on passive consumerism. The current frenzy is a little goofy. I don't see Virgin NOT keeping these titles in print forever just like Geffen does with all the Nirvana albums. You could pretty much count on any classic rock band's albums being in print forever. Every 5-10 years there will be anniversary editions, as long as they are profitable for the industry. Patience is key. Starve the scalpers. FOMO is the enemy.

    SP is not my thing but every genera has their bands they are waiting for to be rereleased.. Danzig, for me. Although his issue appears to be more tied up in legal tape with rights and ownership from past record labels. Sadly, these labels would rather make no money whatsoever, then compromising and making some and getting the music out there

    I still don't have any of those box sets that have been released since 2012, they are too expensive. I have "The Aeroplane Flies High" 5 CD box and the "Siamese Box" 4 seven inches box, both I bought them in the late 90's. I don't like the artwork of those reissues, they changed the original artwork.
    I find very stupid to rise the prices of vinyl records and CDs. It's a stupid practice by the music business and some parasite sellers to make it harder to get a simple disc. What's the point in all that? Pure nonsense.

    • @NTXVinyl
      @NTXVinyl  2 года назад +1

      In many ways, that's correct. A new/major release by an artist like that gets prioritized by the label in a HUGE WAY versus reissues of legacy acts. They contract the pressing plants out way in advance to insure they can meet the release date for retail. Reissues do not get this treatment, especially since there is no "release date" associated with them. They simply get pressed when they get pressed, in between other new/upcoming releases. It's one of the reasons for the frenzy, because NOBODY knows when they're coming, and then SURPRISE....they appear.
