Taco has long resided in Hamburg in Germany and it has a thriving musical theater scene. A music production company there decided that there would at least be enough of a market in the record business in German-speaking Europe for a performer like him, signed him, got him a record deal, and the rest is history.
Taco is TOPS! I could never understand why his innovative synth-pop never really clicked here in the U.S. - but it was OUR loss! I'm a few years older than he and always grooved on those classic songs from the 30's-40's but when Maestro Ockerse put his magical spin to them, they became classics all over again. Taco, THANKS[!] for 40 years of pure joy and here's one white-headed old fan who looks forward to many more!
I think sadly the American headquarters of his record label at the time just didn’t take him very seriously beyond the one hit single. By the time he performed this, his music production company no longer had a deal with his original record label and had one with another and they never were able to get an American distributor again.
His version of Puttin' On the Ritz did pretty well, but it was just about the only thing that got a lot of play time in the US. You'll find the video on RUclips, but it's been heavily edited since the original included performers in blackface.
Kind of interesting to see how this guy went underappreciated for his covers, and love of older music, do to all the new stuff that was coming out, and yet the generation that followed has started to discover it, both for that same love of older music, as well as a need to escape the drivel sold as music today. Don't get me wrong, there are some decent artists out there, but none top the charts, and you have to really look to find any of their work. Taco was before his time, in the sense that very few people in the eighties wanted new renditions of older music, or even old school renditions of newer music as some in today's generation do. I'm glad to see that some change was for the better, and that people are beginning to appreciate this man's work.
I'd say someone like Max Raabe is in a similar category today. The kind of artists that other artists (Raabe playing at Marilyn Mansons wedding) really like for their sensitivity to the originals.
Taco reminds me of an old school song and dance man from the twenties. Flamboyant and playful. He must have really stood out in the eighties with his big dance numbers . 🕺🤪🤩
Puttin on the Ritz brought me here. Against my metalhead will, I must say that I really like this song but don't tell anyone ok????? I have a reputation to maintain.
Secret safe. Taco was great putting an 80s spin on songs from about 50 years before. If anyone is unaware of them, check out Postmodern Jukebox. They are amazing musicians and vocalists changing up a lot of classic songs with different genres.
I think this version sucks, I was looking for the original, which in my opinion is much better. This performer has a creepy vibe about him like a gay ventriloquist dummy or something I cant quite point out
@@julianhermanubis6800 It's an American song sung by a Dutch artist to celebrate the 150th anniversary of German railroads. Why are you trying to make trouble?
@@mrdanforth3744 My comment was entirely a joke, and you're reading way too much into it. We all know modern Germany is radically different than the Germany of 80 years past. But, sorry, there is a bit of irony here, regardless. This sort of music would have been suppressed in Germany at the time it was originally recorded or at least the German government back then tried to suppress it.
I stay up all night listening to music and writing poetry. I've been on a Taco binge the last couple days. I was born in 1976 and Taco was popular in school in Hollywood. A bunch of girls did Puttin' On The Ritz at a talent show.
I’ve just discovered Taco today after never hearing about him. He’s so incredibly talented and entertaining, and I love how much he emulates the 80s. I’m absolutely LIVING for his hair especially!!
This is without a doubt one of your best television performances ever. It’s so elaborate the whole choreography. And how fortuitous for you that you had just released an album that happened to have a cover of “Chattanooga Choo Choo” right on the heels of the 150th anniversary of Deutsche Eisenbahn.
I just saw this. First time. It’s great! I don’t know why I never saw him. This video is adorable. Glenn Miller would love it! Also, “Puttin’ On The Ritz,” the choreography was different and very clever. He was a great tap dancer! Being a Ww2 baby, I love this.
Never heard of you Taco until this past Summer.....I had no idea what a talented guy your are!! Love the old music my parents listened to and loved from the '40s!
Love his voice with such a warm timbre.. Nice song and performance, but my absolutely favorite is still "Puttin on the Ritz". Taco is just brilliant there 🤗
I love this it reminds of the “Old Days” of Tap and Jazz, when I was young and do concerts and such with the Dancing School that I was in. At 64 I miss it and wish I could do it over again
As a big Glenn Miller fan ( pregnant pause for effect ) I give Taco & dancers 12/10 for this rendition. 👍 Third song I've heard by Taco { so far }. REALLY need to see if there's a CD available. 😎 Any info' anyone ?? 🤔
