Character relationships are probably just as important as the main story tbh.

If you ask me the Characters and the Plot are the most vital parts of any good story.
Of course things like Theme ,Worldbuilding ,Consistency ,Pacing ,Composition, Intend, Visual design, Acoustic design and Reversals are important aswell.
But they are more of a secondary aspect.
(Maybe not Theme but you catch my drift)

When it comes to secondary characters, a big favorite of mine is the rival character. Someone who can be, a friend, an antagonist, or neither; but there always someone who can challenge your protagonist to work on themselves to finally be able to surpass their rival.
Two of my favorite rival characters that I've created have completely different personalities. One is hard headed and stubborn. While the other one is rational and cautious. Yet even though both characters have different morals, their both working toward the same goal, and that gives them a reason to push forward.

I'm having a hard time setting up my stories deuteragonist. I want them to be very similar, except this one is much older and acts like a mentor figure with added regret and baggage. The main character learning about that character's past is also going to be a point of conflict.

this might be really helpful for me. I usually try to apply these videos to game design, as i want to be a game designer. In this instance even in games that dont have a massive story, its still important for characters to have relationships as a driving motivation. Take the first Mario game for example, there's Mario, and he has a relationship with Peach in that shes his princess and a damsel in distress. Mario also has a relationship with Bowser in that they are rivals, bowser is being bad kidnapping his princess, and so he doesn't like bowser.
Its not much but it is a small story based almost entirely around relationships.

My take on writing secondary or side characters is to not think of them as side characters. As the author / writer every character is like son or daughter to you. That being said it is equally important to know when to prioritize a characters personal story vs the ENTIRE story. I tend to write out short 3 act personal Arcs for each character I write, a sort of "Road Map" for their portion of the story. I love the template you made, If I didn't already have a dozen plus books on writing this would likely be an instant buy for me. I wish you the best of luck!

This channel consistently produces top quality content full of great advice to help artist develop. What I love so much is that the content really explores how to get heart and soul into your art. The honest and open discussions feel very genuine.
Thank you to both Brooks and Tay for sharing your perspective. I've been playing these videos in the background pretty much nonstop while drawing the past few days.

Me: why did I decide to write a character dynamic on hard mode?

    • @higher_designs
      @higher_designs 5 месяцев назад +1

Have grace on yourself, characters are hard. Nuance in human emotion and personality can take time to craft into a great character. So relax, take the character crafting one day at a time, and try to really write down a lot of your character likes, dislikes, beliefs, pet peeves, political alignment, parental upbringing, parent’s beliefs, etc., etc., etc., 90% of what you come up with for your character probably won’t show up in your story but it will round your character into an more real, tangible character in your head. The more info you write now, the easier it will be to write him when you’re writing your story.
Also don’t write out these facts like you’re coming up with it out of the blue. Imagine your interviewing your character and come up with how they would respond. This way it’s a bit more real, like your getting to know someone rather than coming up with them.

Going to write it here bc i want to & im bored (Btw trauma, dark themes, s**cide & death warnings-)
It’s edgy badass furry time /hj
      Cam
      Friend ig
Sort of complicated, they’re very good friends (and they each want to be more) but very very stressed out which strains their relationship a lot.
10, he’d probably end up dying without her (wether by lack of self care or s💔cide) He’s already lost pretty much everyone he’s known so she’s all he has keeping him going
Cam was selling little paintings in the mouth of an alleyway like she does everyday and Salt is distracted by one as he and his traveling companion walk by. It’s a little painting of a small flower with blood on it, i haven’t decided what kind yet though. It reminds him of when he had seen his mother after she had died- there was a flower (of the same kind in the painting) that had fallen out of a (now broken) flower-pot and been splattered with blood. Cam sees that this is important to him so she gives him a discount. He’s very quiet and looks a bit shell shocked. Later when him and his companion need to settle down for the night before moving on, they find a random alley to sleep in. It’s on the other side of the small town but because it’s my story and i make the rules they by chance picked the one where Cam usually stays. She walks in & sees Salt curled up, but he’s not asleep. He’s sobbing because hE’S JUST BEEN REMINDED OF SEEING HIS MOTHER’S TORN APART CORPSE WHAT DID YALL EXPECT HIM TO DO
Cam sits down next to this complete stranger out of pity & then decides to go with him bc. She’s not exactly living the life, homeless and selling paintings for a meager living. And also stealing she has no qualms about stealing
wOw um, love interest, she keeps him living when he’s in a bad place, she protects him, she gives him something to live for, she needs protecting at one point so he goes apeshit and realizes ‘wow i just killed a man’ and feels not as bad as he expected, also i could name a million things. It sounds cheesy and corny asf but she is his happy ending.
And their eventual husband. Poly cats poly cats poly cats poly cats
