I had a second stem to break off. I planted it right away in fertilized soil (3-2-4), worm castings, and watered in with fish emulsion. For 2-3 days, the leaves whittered. I almost got rid of it. The next day it was standing strong!! Hopefully the clone grows well.

I do prune the bottoms for air flow, and I do clip some suckers as the plants grow. I don't think I'm ready for single, or even double stem style. Maybe I'll try one plant that way, just for the experience. But I do love to see a lot of natural growth. Thanks for introducing the idea. Love to see your garden no matter what the subject is! Thanks for sharing all your tips, Gary. This year I have three beefsteak-size tomato plants I am growing in large pots. Since we get a lot of rain in Switzerland, and I didn’t have a place to place these under a roof, I covered them with large tomato covers with holes. However, after massive rain then heat, I was heartbroken that on removal there was SO much leaf mold. I had to cut back most of the branches, then spray with the 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Is there anything else I can do to save these plants?

Help! After our 6 day heat wave, all of my tomatoes, determinate and indeterminate, are flowering even though they are quite small. They have only been in the ground a couple of weeks here in my zone 6 garden. Do I leave them alone or take flowers off? I'm especially concerned about the determinate types because they are only about 10 inches tall.

Hi Gary. Should you allow your tomato plant to get to a certain size before pruning like this? It appears your plants are pretty far along. I wanted to grow mine using the single-stem method this year and when they were about a foot tall I pruned just the lower leaves so they wouldn’t be touching the ground. I also removed any little suckers. My plant is producing lots of flowers, but looks leggy to me. (It is an indeterminate type). Is this normal or did I prune too soon?
