Gary, I just used Good Dirt Plant Food and worm tea about a week ago. Ok for me to do the fish emulsion so soon? I know you say not to “overlove “ your plants! My pepper just won’t grow past 3-4” and I’m wondering if it’s partly bc they are seeds from a store bought pepper? Thank you for your great videos
I have the opposite problem on a few of my pepper plants. I have them in a keyhole garden with a compost bin in the center where I put some clippings from healthy plants but mostly kitchen scraps. The plants immediately surrounding the bin are ENORMOUS, but not flowering. The only fertilizer they've been given was Dr. Earths Veg formula & worm castings at planting and fish emulsion, both before transplanting & about twice a week since. I bought a high phosphorus water soluble fertilizer ( has very low N, High P & high K) Flower Power 1-43-32 I haven't yet used it. Is this a reasonable fix? At what strength should I dilute it to? I believe it's too strong full strength. Any help would be appreciated! The ones having this problem happen to be my favorite pepper types... Thank for all you do, I watch every video!
@@SerafinaCakes It's not my place to say but it sounds like to much love. Were I am I have a very high Phosphorus level that has taken 7 years to reduce from 550 ppm to 350 ppm, still very high. You probably would benefit from a soil test so you know what your dealing with. Some states I'm told offer this to home gardeners but not mine. I have been pleased with Way Point Labs. I get one every 3 to 5 years. Just follow the directions. I have not made any radical changes to my gardens in forty years just minor adjustments every few years. and I'm doing well and following Gary's words of wisdom.
@@SerafinaCakes Just curious how it worked out for you, your plan seems perfect. I'm also very interested in a water-soluble 1-43-32 fertilizer I've never seen that before anywhere. By any chance do you remember the name brand of it or where you got it last year? Thanks.
I really appreciate your philosophy on calling it "processed" and not "chemical". It makes so much more sense than what most people have been telling me, especially the "organic" gardeners.
Thanks. I want to clarify it for people. All things are chemicals. A synthetic is not fake... it is synthesized or processed by people. Some of the processing is simple. Good luck. fish fertilizer (Neptune's Harvest), high quality compost tea (Boogie Brew makes a bad ass kit) and water soluble trace minerals (sea90 or ocean solution). My Jalapenos and Serrano's were over 6 foot tall and put out a supermega harvest. The entire garden does bad ass with these ingredients.
Thanks, Gary, for putting yourself out there and providing your POV on the use of processed fertlizers. Gardening can be expensive to do if you choose high priced organic fertilizers, and that should not be a turn off to new gardeners - having people judge you if you use non-organic fertilizers. Thanks for helping make gardening accessible to everyone.
I use a mixture of Organic and processer fertilizers whatever is reasonably priced and what I need. I have bone meal and etc for onions and garlic as they love it radishes as well. Also use it for sweet potatoes, also like Agrothrive General Purpose and I also like Espoma Tomato Vegetable Fertilizer, I use Miracle Grow Herb and Vegetable for apple trees as well, had a tree that was really suffering and have been giving it food every week for the last 2 months and its blooming out and growing the biggest crop of apples in years.
Works great for tomatoes as well. When your tomatoe plants begin to, we’ll not look that deep green add some fish fertilizer water soluble and they perk up plus tomatoes can grow very quickly and add to there mass plus the fruit production.
Have to concur 100% with you. I live at 7700 feet high in the Rockies and my number 1 problem is not enough nitrogen. Most soil nitrogen is produced by soil bacteria, and if you have cold soil temperatures then the nitrogen fixing bacteria are not going to be doing their jobs like they should.
My first time here! I like that you encourage others to do what they can afford! That is so priceless! Thanks for a great and well needed video! I had to subscribe.

My pepper plants are amazing. I used the fish emulsion as you recommended, from the beginning. I have lots of peppers and beautiful green, strong plants.

"Let's give our scientists some credit." Hear, hear! I really appreciate that you take the time to explain products like Miracle Gro, Gary, and allay unreasonable fears. It's so easy to spend money on soil amendments, pest deterrents and mineral supplements! Thanks to your advice and example, the new gardener need not overspend and then end up discouraged. You're doing God's work, dude!
Gary, you’re a Gardener after my heart ❤️. You always manage to post a video relating to a problem I’m having. Yes my peppers 🌶 are on the small side with yellowing leaves but thanks to you once I started feeding them fish emulsion they have greened up a d are looking healthy.

I totally agree! Others just say, try this and that but they don't explain it the way that Gary does. He explains it in a way that newbies like me, (I've been gardening for 4 almost 5 years) and I understand HIS versions better than others. Due to the way he thoroughly takes the time and patience to explain things differently for us to understand! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU Gary!
@@lisaruiz149 Ms. Lisa, You are so right. I’ve created a RUclips library for gardening. I’ve saved so many of Gary’s videos to reference back to a late date. Thank you Gary
Its almost like Gary is just sitting in our gardens and knows exactly what information to send us!!! I planted jalapenos LAST YEAR and for whatever reason they havent done ANYTHING. And in TEXAS no less! Id be shocked if i had any larger that a foot tall. Weak, barely any leaves, and yellowish at that. Well, i just completed my 4th week ( i know Gary said 3 ) of applying the Fish Emulsion once a week.....and OMG the difference......they are tall, and green and some are even baring fruit now. This was EXACTLY the advice i needed. Thanks Gary!
You cracked me up when you said you don't need magical ingredients 😆. I always feel validated when I just did something and you make a video on it. Yesterday I spent a while giving the whole garden some fish emulsion. I realized that I hadn't done it in a month, so everyone got a nice drink.
LOL Nothing magical. Plants just want the fertilizer in any form. You garden will love the drink. Mittleider method! Plants only need 13 elements (including Nitrogen). To me the only flip side to that is cost and then burning out your organic matter. Pouring in chemical N will start reducing organic matter as organisms are turbo charged. So then the garden devolves down to hydroponics. ;-)
I have ordered the same Alaska fish emulsion you use and lo it in my rusted garden journal so I know when to feed what plants next. Your advice is superior and has ways aided me in my garden adventures. Thank you

I like liquid hydroponics fertiliser used at 1/2 strength, often less or rarely more. It's top quality fertiliser that doesn't require tons of lime. Flower and fruit with trace elements. If you buy dry hydroponics fertiliser some grow formulas come with separate calcium nitrate which you can add for a nitrogen boost.
Great tip on the hydroponics. I think I will look into it. If I could add just a note to this excellent video and Gary for also taking the time to create it. When ever you add wood pellets in general , to the soil, wood chips, especially of certain types from certain trees they often have the unforeseen result of robbing the soil of its nitrogen RATHER then adding it to the soil. So just make sure to check the nitrogen levels after adding your particular sourced wood chips. Third gen gardeners here. Hi Gary! Thank you for posting this video for struggling plant. My peppers are struggling from frost damage that we had the 3rd week of May. I tried to nurse them hoping that they will come back(they look like stunted/yellow and slow growing so I found out to one of your 8 yrs. old videos about frost damaged peppers/tomatoes/eggplants. Nitrogen indeed what they need to perk up so I fertilized with fish emulsion(alaska 511) that was 3 weeks ago and now they are showing growth and greener color. But as of now we have plenty of rain, rain for 1 week. Thanks Gary for sharing. I learned from your expertise a lot. From your subscriber 5b in west Michigan.👍
human urine is very high in nitrogen. they say you should age it being the old guy that i am, ijust put a gallon jug next to my bed and dont have to run to the bathroom all night long. when its full i mix it with 7 gallons of water. thats it.
So timely! Leaves of my pepper plants are growing smaller and are a bit yellowish while profusely flowering and developing fruits. Time for some nitrogen fix! Thanks, Gary!

I agree on the half strength chemical fertilizer on smallish plants. I've been using full strength miracle gro on my large plants with no issues however. It all gets washed out of the container anyways, and I feel like the larger plants that are supporting lots of fruit really need the shot of nutrients.
All of my potted plants have a catch tray, you just pour it back in. my potted plants on the ground is not an issue they can suck it up from the ground.
Win! I did something right as I just added fish emulsion yesterday. Some varieties were fine, but others were pale. We had a frost and some are regrowing from a couple weeks back. Good to know, thanks!

It's not pure nitrogen or pure phosphorus. That doesn't even make sense. Use it at your own expense, but saying that there isn't anything harmful cut into the mix beyond a doubt is pretty bold.
@@Editisement-Yes it is. Stop perpetuating conspiracy where there is none and no there isn’t anything “harmful” added. The naivety of people on the internet is astounding.
@@Editisement-Moreover, name what is “not pure” and the “harmful added stuff”. I bet you $1000.00 you can’t name one actually thing that has being shown by a reputable laboratory.
@@lajohnson1967 really? Naivety? Because I don't trust big corporations who don't give a shit about you and I? You do you. I go totally organic for a reason because that's the way nature intended and it works best for me. Like I said, use it at your own regard, but to say you totally trust synthesized material from big corps without ever seeing the process of how it's made, what's being added, and where are the materials being sourced is beyond me. Just don't call people uninformed when you're uninformed yourself.
N is the gateway for all other elements. They all interplay with one another in order to become optimally available for the soil life and thusly, the plant. So glad you touched on the fruit not holding the plant back at all thing. For some reason in the pepper community, that myth about “directing energy elsewhere” seems to hold strong. Thank you for that. I will say however, if you like your fish emulsion, I highly recommend you switch to fish hydrolysate and FAA. Hydrolysate is a much superior form and byproduct of a much simpler, cooler process, therefore more complex diversity of compounds.

Right to the point on explaining how we can’t have fake Nitrogen, fake chemicals, or ‘otherwise we would have all this fake Gold.’👍 Btw, thank you for all the videos and detailed yet simple explanations, that take out the guess work out of gardening.

I don't buy water soluble nitrogen (miracle grow etc...) or fish emulsion and I only use bone meal or blood meal when doing my transplants into the garden. When I feel that my plants require some nitrogen I mix up a mixture of 25% urine and 75% water. You put that down around the base of those plants every two weeks and you will have luscious, healthy and bountiful vegetables. Been working for me for forty years. I think that most serious gardeners are aware of this and use it but it's not socially accepted so we just don't broadcast it. Great show Gary, long time subscriber.

I guess if were talking nitrogen, then UREA is probably the most concentrated form? This is what they apply at the local sod farm to really hit the top growth and turn the sod lush green.
Excellent video, Gary. Question: can't too much Nitrogen turn leaves yellow as well? Prevent plants from extracting other nutrients from soil? So how can you tell if your plants are suffering from too much or not enough nitrogen?
It is possible but you would need so much. Nitrogen build up would be like 1 in 10000 gardens. If your whole garden is suffering, then I would worry. Otherwise, give it some nitrogen. Worst case is they don't green up.
I bought a high phosphorus water soluble fertilizer ( has very low N, High P & high K)
Flower Power 1-43-32
I haven't yet used it.

Yes! I'd rather garden than not be able to afford it.
I did this every 7 days for the past 2 weeks... they are looking great now! It works. Thanks.
This advice couldn't have come at a better time.
Same 😅
My first time here! I like that you encourage others to do what they can afford! That is so priceless! Thanks for a great and well needed video! I had to subscribe.

Mittleider method! Plants only need 13 elements (including Nitrogen). To me the only flip side to that is cost and then burning out your organic matter. Pouring in chemical N will start reducing organic matter as organisms are turbo charged. So then the garden devolves down to hydroponics. ;-)

Blessings and what a wonderful video and thank you for sharing with the community.

Amen - He ( Gary ) taught me at age 56 how to grow my own Transplants after years of buying the same old Transplants from the big box stores -
We wanted to taste other veggies & watching alot alot of Garys very informative content -
We have 3 times the garden we had last year !
Plus had a plant sale ( gave alot of Transplants away to my community as I wanted to bless them also )
Gary is a GREAT TEACHER & also gardening helps me therapeuticly daily ..
God bless you & I hope you have a GREAT harvest this year & always .

The videos really are high quality well put together to the point videos. It takes a lot of effort to put once of these together more then what people understand so my hats off to anyone who does.

You must live here in MO. That freeze stunted my peppers bad
human urine is very high in nitrogen. they say you should age it being the old guy that i am, ijust put a gallon jug next to my bed and dont have to run to the bathroom all night long. when its full i mix it with 7 gallons of water. thats it.
So timely! Leaves of my pepper plants are growing smaller and are a bit yellowish while profusely flowering and developing fruits. Time for some nitrogen fix! Thanks, Gary!
Yep. It should work

Been using fish imulsion for 10+ yrs..great stuff! But don't forget to use bonemeal couple times during season, especially when your leaves ripple.
Win! I did something right as I just added fish emulsion yesterday. Some varieties were fine, but others were pale. We had a frost and some are regrowing from a couple weeks back. Good to know, thanks!

I was needing this info like yesterday 😂. My pepper plants looked so great before planting them in the garden. I am heading out there today to give them fish imulsion. Thanks for your straight forward delivery of great information.
Wow. This is such an important point you’ve made about all the different fertilizers. It’s very similar to what you said a long time ago about buying all these “fancy” bagged soils. There so much propaganda and power in advertising, the media, and exciting tag words!! Thank you for such great, relatable videos!!
It really is... I am cool with people using what they want but only after they get to the ingredients and understand what they are buying and needs of the plants. Saving money is good

Thank-you for pointing out that processed fertilizers are not “fake” or “man-made”. I get so tired of reading on gardening forums uninformed people ditching the processed stuff.
exactly.....We are caretakers of everything PROVIDED for us. We MADE nothing. A wheat berry is just that. Altering that berry provides many options. 🍯🥖🥫🍅🙏Blessings
Very true on nitrogen. Thanks

Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank you Gary for explaining this for the simple fact I need good explanations like this for fertilizers. You're the best!
I use Fish Emulsion. And really appreciate your information,. I recently covered a 10x10 grass area with hay. I have soaked the hay in with FE. I was every pleased to see much fungi at the ground level when I peeled some of it back. It has been on the ground about three months. I plan to plant tomatoes and pepper in this area. Mainly I had hoped the FE would give the fungi I had start, and help the worms. Anyone have a comment about FE hurting earthworms???
That will be nicely broken down come planting. Good luck. FE wont hurt worms

Check the NPK and nitrogen type. Ammonium and urea nitrogen are slow to turn into available nitrogen. Nitrate nitrogen works instantly.
This is exactly what I have going on. Will do fish fert tomorrow.
I will start using my fish emulsion every 7 days to see if that improves my pepper's issues. It looks like blossom end rot. Great information Thanks for sharing.

Ty, i have kelp. May have screwed up putting the magnesium rite in soil. Even tho i had a mind to water it in
what about tomatoes that are struggling? Would you add nitrogen too?
Right to the point on explaining how we can’t have fake Nitrogen, fake chemicals, or ‘otherwise we would have all this fake Gold.’👍 Btw, thank you for all the videos and detailed yet simple explanations, that take out the guess work out of gardening.
Curious about your thoughts of blood meal instead of fish emulsion. Will it do the same thing? Or are there real advantages to the fish emulsion?
I use neem seed meal. Has some built in pest 🪳 control and almost perfect N & P ratio for most acid lovers .. K is my hardest part of the profile to master.. tomatoes need it in veg more than most are aware.
Thank you.... I needed this.. fish emulsion stink tomorrow.... Nothing secretive!!! 💚😉
Good luck

Cal mag helps too
I don't buy water soluble nitrogen (miracle grow etc...) or fish emulsion and I only use bone meal or blood meal when doing my transplants into the garden.
Urine is water soluble. That works.

I pick my leaves off, as part of my pruning. I been using rabbit poop.., And chicken yard dirt.

What about using used coffee grounds?
Great but a slow release. Not water soluble.

Would you do the same for eggplants? When would you switch to a bloom fert? one we see flowers?
I have used bloom ferts and havent seen significant change. But you can follow the same idea.

Good morning is it every day the fish emulsion or 1times a week. If I don't have that can I use grass or chicken meneur.
Hi Gary thank you for this video. I have a blueberry plant that looks just like this plant, can you do a video on how to fix it plz? I'm in zone 6a and I have my bushel and Berry plant in the ground.
Gary, my peppers new growth is all deformed and i think it looks like 2,4-D herbicide drift or broad mites.. i cut off all infected growth and hit with more N fert.. any other suggestions to help them recover?
Nope. Thats all you can do. Nitrogen and let them grow. Good luck

Thanks Gary, always good to know. Cause sometimes, I think it's something else causing the yellow. Thanks bro.
Glad to help. Best to always start with more water soluble nitrogen and watch.
