      Gary, I just used Good Dirt Plant Food and worm tea about a week ago. Ok for me to do the fish emulsion so soon? I know you say not to “overlove “ your plants! My pepper just won’t grow past 3-4” and I’m wondering if it’s partly bc they are seeds from a store bought pepper? Thank you for your great videos

      I have the opposite problem on a few of my pepper plants. I have them in a keyhole garden with a compost bin in the center where I put some clippings from healthy plants but mostly kitchen scraps. The plants immediately surrounding the bin are ENORMOUS, but not flowering.
      The only fertilizer they've been given was Dr. Earths Veg formula & worm castings at planting and fish emulsion, both before transplanting & about twice a week since. I bought a high phosphorus water soluble fertilizer ( has very low N, High P & high K)
      Flower Power 1-43-32
      I haven't yet used it. Is this a reasonable fix? At what strength should I dilute it to? I believe it's too strong full strength. Any help would be appreciated! The ones having this problem happen to be my favorite pepper types...
      Thank for all you do, I watch every video!

      @@SerafinaCakes It's not my place to say but it sounds like to much love. Were I am I have a very high Phosphorus level that has taken 7 years to reduce from 550 ppm to 350 ppm, still very high. You probably would benefit from a soil test so you know what your dealing with. Some states I'm told offer this to home gardeners but not mine. I have been pleased with Way Point Labs. I get one every 3 to 5 years. Just follow the directions. I have not made any radical changes to my gardens in forty years just minor adjustments every few years. and I'm doing well and following Gary's words of wisdom.

      @@SerafinaCakes Just curious how it worked out for you, your plan seems perfect.
      I'm also very interested in a water-soluble 1-43-32 fertilizer I've never seen that before anywhere.
      By any chance do you remember the name brand of it or where you got it last year? Thanks.

    I really appreciate your philosophy on calling it "processed" and not "chemical". It makes so much more sense than what most people have been telling me, especially the "organic" gardeners.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Thanks. I want to clarify it for people. All things are chemicals. A synthetic is not fake... it is synthesized or processed by people. Some of the processing is simple. Good luck.

    Thanks, Gary, for putting yourself out there and providing your POV on the use of processed fertlizers. Gardening can be expensive to do if you choose high priced organic fertilizers, and that should not be a turn off to new gardeners - having people judge you if you use non-organic fertilizers. Thanks for helping make gardening accessible to everyone.

      Works great for tomatoes as well. When your tomatoe plants begin to, we’ll not look that deep green add some fish fertilizer water soluble and they perk up plus tomatoes can grow very quickly and add to there mass plus the fruit production.

    Have to concur 100% with you. I live at 7700 feet high in the Rockies and my number 1 problem is not enough nitrogen. Most soil nitrogen is produced by soil bacteria, and if you have cold soil temperatures then the nitrogen fixing bacteria are not going to be doing their jobs like they should.

      Mittleider method! Plants only need 13 elements (including Nitrogen). To me the only flip side to that is cost and then burning out your organic matter. Pouring in chemical N will start reducing organic matter as organisms are turbo charged. So then the garden devolves down to hydroponics. ;-)

    I like liquid hydroponics fertiliser used at 1/2 strength, often less or rarely more. It's top quality fertiliser that doesn't require tons of lime. Flower and fruit with trace elements. If you buy dry hydroponics fertiliser some grow formulas come with separate calcium nitrate which you can add for a nitrogen boost.

    If I could add just a note to this excellent video and Gary for also taking the time to create it. When ever you add wood pellets in general , to the soil, wood chips, especially of certain types from certain trees they often have the unforeseen result of robbing the soil of its nitrogen RATHER then adding it to the soil. So just make sure to check the nitrogen levels after adding your particular sourced wood chips. Third gen gardeners here. I agree on the half strength chemical fertilizer on smallish plants. I've been using full strength miracle gro on my large plants with no issues however. It all gets washed out of the container anyways, and I feel like the larger plants that are supporting lots of fruit really need the shot of nutrients.

    N is the gateway for all other elements. They all interplay with one another in order to become optimally available for the soil life and thusly, the plant. So glad you touched on the fruit not holding the plant back at all thing. For some reason in the pepper community, that myth about “directing energy elsewhere” seems to hold strong. Thank you for that. I will say however, if you like your fish emulsion, I highly recommend you switch to fish hydrolysate and FAA. Hydrolysate is a much superior form and byproduct of a much simpler, cooler process, therefore more complex diversity of compounds.

I was every pleased to see much fungi at the ground level when I peeled some of it back. It has been on the ground about three months. I plan to plant tomatoes and pepper in this area. Mainly I had hoped the FE would give the fungi I had start, and help the worms. Anyone have a comment about FE hurting earthworms???

      Maybe but they are airless. They choked my compost and made it wet and slimy. I chuck it in the bin.

    Curious about your thoughts of blood meal instead of fish emulsion. Will it do the same thing? Or are there real advantages to the fish emulsion?

    • @bbingtube
      @bbingtube 3 года назад +5

      I use neem seed meal. Has some built in pest 🪳 control and almost perfect N & P ratio for most acid lovers .. K is my hardest part of the profile to master.. tomatoes need it in veg more than most are aware.

    I don't buy water soluble nitrogen (miracle grow etc...) or fish emulsion and I only use bone meal or blood meal when doing my transplants into the garden. When I feel that my plants require some nitrogen I mix up a mixture of 25% urine and 75% water. You put that down around the base of those plants every two weeks and you will have luscious, healthy and bountiful vegetables. Been working for me for forty years. I think that most serious gardeners are aware of this and use it but it's not socially accepted so we just don't broadcast it. Great show Gary, long time subscriber.

    I guess if were talking nitrogen,then UREA is probably the most concentrated form?This is what they apply at the local sod farm to really hit the top growth and turn the sod lush green.

  • @williamcorbitt7060
    @williamcorbitt7060 3 года назад +2

    Excellent video, Gary. Question: can't too much Nitrogen turn leaves yellow as well? Prevent plants from extracting other nutrients from soil? So how can you tell if your plants are suffering from too much or not enough nitrogen?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 года назад +2

      It is possible but you would need so much. Nitrogen build up would be like 1 in 10000 gardens. If your whole garden is suffering, then I would worry. Otherwise, give it some nitrogen. Worst case is they don't green up.
