    When most people think of fishing, we imagine relaxing in a boat and patiently reeling in the day’s catch. But modern industrial fishing -- the kind that stocks our grocery shelves -- looks more like warfare. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Jennifer Jacquet explain overfishing and its effects on ecosystems, food security, jobs, economies, and coastal cultures.

    Also worth mentioning, roughly half of all food caught, raised and farmed for the American market ends up in landfills. The US has a fraction of the worlds population, yet "consumes" and throws away enough food to feed much of the rest of the world. Recreational fishing regulations in America also causes as much harm as it does good. Rather than accepting whatever size is caught, regulations result in many fish having to be thrown back to die and more caught to fit regulations and limits.

    I fly fish for Atlantic Salmon in Eastern Canada (Gaspe, Quebec region) and I cannot agree more. The Atlantic Salmon population has been devastated by overfishing in the open ocean off Greenland and Iceland. As the video said commercial fishing doesn't respect boarders. So when Salmon come back to spawn there are less and less annually. Coastal communities, Native Americans, and most of all the Salmon population have been hurt severely.

    WWF and Greenpeace have published guides for consumers to know which fish is still "okay to eat". I would really recommend them (there are apps too) because we as customers determine the demand on certain fish species. And the demand determines the supply!

    • @MultiJoniboy
      @MultiJoniboy 7 лет назад +22

      why not just eat no fish at all? These diet guidelines put out by greenpeace or the ADA are created in regards to "what are people most likely going to follow", not "what is actually the healthiest/most sustainable way". There is probably almost no fish "ok to eat" when it comes to health and sustainability. So why not just stop eating them.
      Props to you though for at least caring about your environment :)

    • @TottiShares
      @TottiShares 7 лет назад +25

      Jonas Bergner I actually don't eat meat ^^ but I understand if people don't want to 'go all the way' and if everyone would just care a little bit more we could really make a difference. And there are methods that allow sustainable fishing! I think a huge problem is not that people eat fish but with how little awareness they do. Tuna pizza and tuna everything without questioning where it's coming from. If we would stick to less but then good fish (same with meat in my opinion) we wouldn't have that problem

    It doesn't mean every form of fishing is bad. In my country (Netherlands) fishing is very regulated and they invested tons money for innovative electric pulse fishing where fish is led into the nets with electric pulses instead of tickler chains so there's almost no damage to the sea floor and almost no unwanted bycatch. Green Peace still try to block them though, by throwing large boulders into the sea which damage the fishing nets. Those damaged fishing nets stay on the sea floor and catch all sorts of fish who die without any purpose. That's why I'm a little sarcastic when watching these video's. I know in other parts of the world overfishing is a real deal but still.

    Seafood is my favorite. Living on the coast I used to eat it multiple times daily. Fresh Lobster, snow crab, ahi tuna, cod, salmon, oysters, scallops..i niavely figured that the market would maintain sustainability by price and that if i could afford it that I wasn’t causing any harm.. I now save these things for more special occasions and only eat sustainable seafood. I have developed a huge taste for alaskan pollock, farmed shrimp and mussels,sardines, and imitation crab. If you are creative in the kitchen you can make incredible culinary creations with these ingredients. Its not ideal, but imagine a world without seafood for our grandchildren.. thats the reality.

    Our Yukon River king salmon were tossed over until we couldn't fish for them anymore.
    And that started in 1998 along with silvers and chums destined for the 2300 mile River. We now depend on donations from Fish and Game and Bristol Bay

    The problem isn't really people CONSUMING the fish, weather you're vegan or not. The problem is how fishermen are OVERfishing and how other fish are being killed leaving hem to waste when they're unwanted. They just need to be limited when it comes to fishing.
