I never knew you could display it vertically. Since it doesn't fit in my Kallax, I leave it on top laying on it's side. The Merlin big box fits on top of it also on it's side. And nextdoor is the Castles of Burgendy Special Edition big box, and the Mage Knight Ultimate Edition top of that one.
Everdell isn't that bad for me to put put. I guess because I am used to other games taking even longer to setup.
Probably my worst insert is inside the Mage Knight Ultimate Edition. Almost half the box space is open air not even used. Clans of Caledonia desperately needed an insert, but it came with nothing. It took me forever to setup the game with over a dozen half sandwhich sized ziplocks. I ordered a wooden insert for it off of Etsy that took forever to arrive from Ukraine. This was 7 years ago. And it has been a huge improvement. I can setup in half the time.
I have heard the Gloomhaven insert was terrible and setup is legnthy, but I backed the second edition currently in production, and that insert should be a significant improvement.

I have entirely too many big box games that take up more then a Kallax cubby. Everdell is pretty good on the space utilization for sure. My worst was the original insert for Super Fantasy Brawl, it looked good but used way too much space. For box with no insert in my collection would be Gaia Project, which is a long setup only compounded by finding all the pieces.

What you’re not taking in to consideration is that the sheer amount of content in the box doesn’t lend itself to a simple design. Plus, if you wanted to be able to take the core game out of the box without taking everything out then you’d most likely be splitting the storage of like components, like having some boards here, others there, some cards here, some cards there. That type of design would take up more space and not be as elegant.

Actually it is set up rather nicely for base game play and adding the expansions but for the setup of the game it leaves me scratching my head why the main board/boards were put and designed to be on the bottom of the box.
My argument isn't that it isn't a good storage solution just that it is odd. You have to take everything out of the box before you can start setting the game up. You have to take out the Belfaire board before you get to the main board. You have to pull all parts of the tree out before you can start assembling. Things like that bother me.
But I agree with you that if you compartmentalized by expansion the design would be worst.

I couldn't imagine having the cardboard tree for fear of destroying it every time.

I've now heard from a lot of people that the Complete Collection has killed the game completely for them since it makes setup and teardown be an enormous hassle.

It does some things right like bringing it all into one box, but some of the organization choices are bad.

@@phillipbreja7243 I wholeheartedly agree. It isn't something I really used to put a lot of thought into before, but these days I really appreciate a well-engineered board game box.

So, maybe cut one of the short sides of the bottom box and turn it into a flap with a magnet? Then make shelves to slide things out of the new opening? I don't know. I only just discovered the game of everdell....
I agree with you on marvel united. I want a better storage solution. Gonna have to 3d print something.....

I need to take a minute with a glue gun and ribbon to ease pulling trays out much easier.

Yes, this is completely a first world problem but it just struck me as odd and thought I would share my thoughts on it.
