The stability of the Mat-49 appears to be far superior to that of the S&W-76. When he went full auto, the barrel of the Mat-49 hardly moved an inch but the S&W-76, you can see he was fighting to keep it on point.
You observe very rightly. Like most French guns after WW1, it was made so that wheezing forty-year-old reservists who hadn't been in uniform for twenty years could master them with just a few days hasty refreshing before going to the front. It is a crying shame that France closed all its arsenals because those engineers were wizards who knew their trade better than most.
It has a slow rate of fire

The owner of the gun store I worked for in the 90's had a S&W 76 (among many other full auto's ). It was the first sub gun my son fired at the age of 10 (of course I was kneeling behind him with my hands on his) he didn't seem to have a problem pulling the trigger. He did what all of us do when we get to fire a full auto for the first time, 2 short burst, giggled and dumped the mag LOL. thanks for the video Curtis.

General Mason-Macfarlane, the head of military intelligence, summoned journalists & told them that they were to inform the British public to blame the French for “not fighting,” & to proclaim that the B.E.F. was “undefeated.” Hard to see how 90,000 killed meant “not fighting.”

Given the early British determination to dis-continue the fighting & prepare for evacuation, the very low levels of casualties, it is a complete distortion of truth to “mock” the courage & commitment of the French forces to say they did not fight - particularly when they were fighting a completely new form of mobile warfare which the French High Command was completely un-prepared for.
The very existence of the Churchill Government was at stake and it was well-known his successor would most likely be Lord Halifax who wanted peace with Germany “Victory at all costs” Churchill was right to look for a scapegoat

the MAT 49 is a great gun for close combat , it was a favorite gun in the french army , 600 rounds per minute , 9 mm , very light to carry , super simple to clean , stayed in the army service until 1980 , remember when you arm the gun ALWAYS bring the lever foward , if not the gun may jam . ( army class 69/1b in west germany ).

I saw the MAT49 still in service in France in Gendarmerie highway unit in the year 1991.

Nice to see a MAT49 shooting. If i may : you're supposed to bring back the lever in the forward position after cocking the gun. It could jam or damage the level. It's how we have been taught in French Service. TY

Most MATs used in vietnam were converted to 7,62x25 tokarev and would've reacted much different to this french version
also, the MAT fires around 600rpm, not 400.

Great info/history, and proof that it’s possible to learn something new everyday. I’ve been in involved in the shooting sports since the 1960’s, and am fairly well versed on modern weapons, but I had never heard of either of these two pieces prior to this video. I’ve long been a big MP5 fan but have now seen something I’m going to have to explore closely. Thanks!

Spencer King: Swedish K copied by S&W. The Navy Seals used it in Vietnam until Sweden decided to stop selling them to the USA. The Seals liked the gun so much, they had S&W copy it. How awesome is that?

Wife and I shot a SW 76 with and without suppressor, it was fun and controllable. I wrote my initials in the target with suppressor on it. On same outing we were also shooting a WWII Thompson.
7:56 always check the chamber when you're done shooting. That's good safety practice.
I have a picture of my dad in Vietnam 1968 a guy in his squad had a MAT 49 . Contrary to Hollywood a lot of GI's carried weapons other than a M16. I had a old boss that was a Nam vet 1969-1970, 9th Infantry he carried a M1 Carbine.
Alot of GI's hated the M16 believe it or not and would readily trade it for an M14, M1 Carbine, or even an enemy's AK47

The Korean Marien Corps had one of those French SMGs on the wall in their FDC Bunker in the KMC Artillery compound just north of Hoi An when I was standing liaison duty in '68 '69.
I always think of the movie "Omega Man "with Charlton Heston when I think of the Smith & Wesson 76.....which Charlie owned .
Unfortunately the mat 49 is a great weapon and the VC loved them they were particularly dangerous when they did drive-bys the guy would sit on the back of the moped with the gun completely hidden and then fold it out of the last second dump mag and ride off

If I had to pick two guns to recommend you to take out in an apocalypse it would be The SKS Rifle and a Revolver in a common pistol calibre. Simple; heavy actions usually perform crudely and effectively and are rarely prone to stoppage and more hardy to wear and tear
SKS has no recoil either. Mine has a grenade launcher on it, never know when you'll need a grenade launcher...

I've always known about the Smith & Wesson 76. When I was a kid I used to see this gun in all sorts of movies during the '70s. though I never knew the name of the gun, I always knew it on sight and sound.

Wow, love the story of the gun at the end.
In the very early stages of the conflict I saw some of these that had been back with a simple weld in the chamber and the fixed fire pin broke off. As dependents of Special Force soldiers we were in a wonder land that few others visited. Shotgun News and the mail man could really make a Xmas one to remember.

My father served in the French foreign legion 2nd regiment paratroopers in Algeria from 1957 to 1962 and loved his mat49

The Swedish m45B, what you Americans usually call the Swedish K, also has that barrel change function. There is a small spring loaded stop just by the reciever tube, not unlike the stop on an AK pattern rifle that goes in to the front sight to keep the thread protector/muzzle device in place, that when depressed, allowed for the barrel nut and shroud to be unscrewed, and for the barrel to thus be removed.
A funny story I heard about the m45 is that during the Congo crisis, Swedish soldiers armed with the m45C variant were seen using the guns with bayonets mounted, and apparently instilled quite a lot of awe from their allies for the sheer shenanigans of using bayonets, and fear from their enemies, for the same reason. The though of getting stuck with a bayonet is, apparently, bad for morale.

I worked in the early '90s with a S & W 76 like this, this machine gun is only useful if you train its use in bursts. It's a totally reliable but difficult to control weapon. My weapon did not have a suppressor in this time....

Yeah except the feature noted in conjunction with the quote you decided to post is not made possible solely by the use of a simple hinge. Not only that but if that is truly how you interpreted what the man had to say regarding the dust cover then you failed to comprehend a fairly straight forward statement which happens to be a matter of fact. That being that the mat49 is one of the early open bolt submachine guns to incorporate a dust cover that will open automatically when the bolt moves forward upon firing.
But the French didn't lose both world wars.

France did not lose WW1. And it was not thanks to the US who only came in the beginning of the last year of the war, lost a considerable amount of men and ressources because they were unprepared, didn't want black men serving next to their white soldiers, and only took part in some minor battles.
Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful to the US soldiers that came and fought with us, mostly liberated my country, France, in both World Wars. But still, don't forget that it was a favor you owed us for a long time. And, as much as we respect your dead, we would like you to respect ours as well. We lost 240 000 men in a few weeks in WW2, we still have grief and a sour taste of you helping Algerians and Vietnamese rebels...

had one of those on loan for my channel from 5th & 5th Armory and it went absolutely amazing. my buddy came over and i popped him in the gun like he was a magazine and just blew up every wrecked car on the compound. highly repeat highly recommend everyone under the sun use moonlight estate's sub sonic before firing your buddy through the gun with a suppressor.
I have an MK760 and was curious, who did the suppressor? Been looking for a suppressor for mine.

They were among the major contributors of the war effort and the main victors.
I know they don’t teach this in history class anymore, but had it not been for America’s entry into the war...in both instances, French would not be a language spoken today. The French, for all intents and purposes had fallen. It was only until American reinforcements arrived that they were able to mount any sort off offensive action. In both instances. The Central/Axis powers occupied large proportions of France and had routed their military in most engagements that mattered. France lost both World Wars, until America snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
WW1 was completely different than WW2.
France was still there and kicking in 1918, they were far from being routed. Germany occupied only a small part of Northern France and the French managed to stop German offensives both in 1914 and in 1916. sorry, but that it is not true. A lot of Americans died in the WW1 but doesn't compare with the losses of France or the British Empire. The arrival of the AEF it helped in reducing the pressure on the Allies and give the respite needed for starting new offensives. But, the Allies troops could stay in the tranches for another 2 years without any major changes and the result would have been the same, the Central Powers would loose because their only resources were just some food they obtained in the East Europe by forcing Romania in an armistice and taking some territories from the Russia which was in full Bolshevik Revolution. The needed industrial and agricultural resources were very limited and the civilian population at the end cracked. And this is the reason why the Germans considered they were betrayed at home because on the front they were doing quite well their job regardless off the AEF. They were not defeated on the front. Their home front was the one that collapsed.
This is the reason we had the second world war in Europe.

For sure they were trained by British, Canadians, Australians and New Zealand officers and used a lot of French equipment.
Their help for sure contributed at the end result but considering them the main contributors at the victory I would say it is a huge exaggeration.
First... great video which shows some of the weapons used for those close encounters during the Viet Nam Conflict... A friend of mine was hands on with the S&W while in Special Forces, during his tour in the South East Asian Games...I used one in the early 80's for a S.W.A.T entry weapon... It was very reliable...If I'm not mistaken, soldiers were able to ( with a CO's approval ) bring a Trophy of War home legally and registered till 1974... Most never knew about this...

2.5 Million US soldiers served in vietnam. And they lost the war.
We killed more of them then we lost. And we never surrendered so technically speaking not a loss. And only bc we had two dumb ass presidents being cautious instead of letting the marines do their jobs.

I like the MAT-49 on looks and it seems to have a more sturdy stock. And the mag-over grip is a great idea.

I had a MAT-49 while I was assigned to Eagle Dustoff, 101st Abn Div, Camp Eagle, I CORPS. When I left in Dec '71, I did not know at the time that had I done a DEWAT on it, I could have taken it home.
