I played OoT when I was 8 years old. My father had bought a second hand N64 at a yard sale, which had it and a whole bunch of other games for dirt cheap. It took me over a year to beat it because I couldn't read very well, and some of my fondest childhood memories are of me playing the game next to my dad while he read to me what the characters were saying. Thank you for the retrospective
Thank you so much for sharing that. A Link to the past really helped me with my reading skills and Ocarina did the same as a teenager. Thank YOU for watching the five hours.
I liked your video. I actually shared it with my daughter and encouraged her to watch it because I've been trying to get her to play Ocarina of Time before Tears of the kingdom comes out because I'm hoping that there will be a lot of references to it and she doesn't want to play it but I told her that you have pretty much a blow by blow of the story and the game and it is probably the most comprehensive way for her to experience it without actually playing it or watching a let's Play. Ocarina of Time is a special game. I mean in a way almost every Zelda game is a special game but Ocarina of Time it really is like the Pinnacle and I also was upset with the same things that you were about breath of the wild but I really had fun with it and I hope that they have dungeons and sages and collectible items that you don't lose or break in tears of the Kingdom. Although I'm really excited about the new mechanics with fusing things together and building things. But Ocarina of Time was the best and it brought me and a bunch of friends together around the same time we were all seniors in high school and it was the perfect time to be the same age as adult Link. The funny thing is my daughter is now the same age I was when Ocarina of Time came out and she loved breath of the wild it's her favorite game and she's super looking forward to tears of the Kingdom. So for the first time in my life since Ocarina of Time I finally have somebody that I know very very well who will also be playing the new Zelda game alongside me! I can't wait to share that experience with my daughter. My very first exposure to Zelda was when I got to play what I always called Zelda 3 for the first time I was staying in my stepsisters over the summer and she had upstairs neighbors who had a kid that was the same age as me and he had a Super Nintendo and so I got to play it and I was so excited by it I didn't get very far but not long after that my brother got Link's Awakening on the game boy and that became the first Zelda game that I experienced by myself from start to finish without any help. I had a good friend who bought a PlayStation and she sold me her Super Nintendo and all her games and the first game I played was a link to the past I still love it I love Wind Waker Twilight Princess I didn't have any problems with Skyward Sword if you were patient the motion controls worked if you were violent with them they would get out of calibration. However I am actually enjoying going through the switch version using the joystick it's a little wonky at times but I feel it's a much more enjoyable playthrough than waggling. I think that every Zelda game that has released since Ocarina of Time every Zelda fan has wanted it to be like Ocarina of Time. Not in as much as identical but capturing that same magic. I do feel that there were parts of breath of the wild that were as awe-inspiring as the first time you play Ocarina of Time. But boy do I ever want tears of the Kingdom to be another Ocarina of Time.
I’ve watched just about every Ocarina retrospective there is on RUclips from big and small channels alike, and there are some great ones out there, but none of them take you through the entire game piece-by-piece the way this one does. Like many others, I consider OoT to be THE definitive video game of my childhood. It symbolizes and encapsulates my youth like no other video game. I grew up with an NES and a Genesis, but the N64 was the system that truly captured my heart and mind, and taught me how valuable and cherished a video game experience can be. OoT came out when I was 12-13, and I’ll always vividly remember the days and weeks (and months) I spent alone, on vacation with my family, or just in my bedroom playing and conquering this masterpiece. I was one of the lucky ones to get the Gold cartridge, and sadly I still have the box but the cart itself is long gone. Like many others who will comment, we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for laying down this masterpiece of a retrospective for the world to see. I’m glad this is a relatively unknown channel, that makes it even better. This game is so important to so many for good reason. It represents a time when the game industry itself had not fully matured yet. Many of us feel that it was a better time, for what the industry has become isn’t exactly pretty. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the kind words. This was one project I wanted to do as much justice to the game as as I could. I tried to do something different so I didn't watch the other retrospectives. No game since has matched the experience I had with Ocarina of Time, A true timeless epic.
Stuck at home with my 4mo son and have had this playing in the background for 2 days now. So calming and peaceful! Oot was the very first game I ever played by myself, and before I even played it I watched my mom, uncle, and brother play it first! I loved it so much. I can never get enough Zelda. This game especially will always make me think of family. I hope my son grows up to love Zelda as much as I do! I’m already raising him on the music lol. Thank you for this video!
Thank you for sharing this. I am glad this video has been a good in your life. I am positive your son will grow up to love this game as well. The story and themes are remarkably timeless and can connect on a deep level with anyone at anytime.
Another reason I was disappointed with the direction of BOTW. I feel it's better to leave voices to the imagination. I'm grateful that they haven't totally abandoned the textbox. Taking away what made this series distinct to make it less distinct
Brian, THANK YOU immensely for this work of art. This needs to get big, and it will just give it time. I love hearing fellow fans talk about Zelda and have been inspired to soon make my own Zelda content. I kinda don't like the other comment saying how you monetized it, I feel it's only fair for the quality, length and love that is in this video. Half asleep as I write this but again, thank you 💜 may the Goddess smile upon you. New subscriber btw
I absolutely love this retrospective. The way you tell story brings me back to my childhood, listening to my dad tell me fantasy stories before bed. You also brought me back to a long forgotten memory. My first time beating the game, i had heavy assistance from my brother, so about a year after, my best friend and I strove to beat the game ourselves. He was staying the night at my house one night, and we were on the Water Temple. With some struggle, we beat Shadow Link. After more exploration, we were missing a key. Taking turns, we scoured every room, using the map and changing water levels to make sure we didn't overlook anything. Hours go by, the sun is coming up. We can't find the key. The next morning, dejected, we ask my brother for help. Without even loading up the game, he asks about key locations, including the one beyond Shadow Link's room. We didn't even think to look there.
Haha thank you so much for sharing this. I didnt realize there were song of time blocks in the floor behind the longshot chest. I was stuck for a day wondering where to go next.... hope you check out some other retrospectives i did and see what interests you. Stay Nerdporeal
This game, as well, as A Link to the Past, are what defined Zelda to me. Most people tend to say that the first game you play in a series will be your favorite, and I do believe that holds some merit. Final Fantasy IV was the first Final Fantasy game and is one of my favorites. Same deal with Tales of Phantasia for the Tales series and the original Kingdom Hearts for that one. Zelda was unique in that I first played both A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time at the same time. While I had a Super Nintendo since 1996, it wasn't until 1998 that I played A Link to the Past. I was blown away by the gameplay and its world, so imagine my surprise when I heard that a new Zelda game was coming out that same year on the new(er) Nintendo 64! My biological father passed away in 1996. I feel like part of the reason my mother bought us our Super Nintendo was to help us bond more together and recover from losing him. I was only 5 when he passed away, just old enough to understand what was going on. We would eventually meet our stepfather two years later who introduced us to the Zelda franchise with not only A Link to the Past, but to the first two games in the series on the NES. He and my mother would buy the N64 for me and my younger brother that same year. We watched our mother play through the game and were completely blown away by the graphics. Even today, I still think the old graphics in this game and Majora's Mask look better than any N64 game and many Playstation games from that era. This game was also the first game that we needed a guide to beat (the second being Riven, the sequel to Myst). Not only would my mom buy the Prima guide for this game, but my friend from school would ask his dad to print out a Game FAQ as well. Bear in mind, I asked him to do this in 1999, back when the internet wasn't quite as commonly used as today and back when that site was in its infancy! Despite all of this, we never beat the game that year. I wouldn't properly beat it for years, actually. I had a really bad habit of playing games up to a point and stopping for various reasons. For Ocarina, it was usually that damn Water Temple. The boots were a pain and the dungeon itself still trips me up even to this day (that Song of Time block behind the chest housing the Longshot being the worst offender for me since I Foret that nearly every playthrough, even my most recent one on Switch). Despite this, I still have nearly every version of the game except for the one that came bundled with the first 2 Zeldas and Majora's Mask a.k.a. the *second* GameCube port. Oddly enough, the first Zelda game I ever beat start to finish was Twilight Princess. I think part of the reason for this was its bigger scope and the fact that the dungeons were significantly easier compared to the N64 titles. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't think any 3D game's dungeons even come close to the difficulty level of those found in the Adult dungeons in Ocarina of Time and *EVERY* dungeon in Majora's Mask save the first (I *STILL* haven't beat the Great Bay Temple, even after all these years, something I hope to eventually rectify on Switch). After that, the next game I beat was A Link to the Past...in 2014 when I was 23. You think my favorite 2D Zelda game would have been beaten when I was younger, but no. I was foolish and tackled the Dark World dungeons in numbered order. Once I found ways to better optimize my routing, the game became significantly easier and that *one* puzzle in the Ice Palace was circumvented entirely by using the Cane of Somaria. A year later, while I was working part-time at Moe's and attending college, I took the time to finally beat my other favorite in the franchise: Ocarina of Time. My cartridge may not be the golden one, but it was still one of the earliest versions, so the chanting in the Fire Temple was still there as well as the red blood in the Bottom of the Well, the Shadow Temple and Ganondorf's red blood in both of his boss fights (yes, those were still red in the earliest North American release, as I was happy to discover). The feeling of finally beating a game I loved from my childhood was transcendent, a feeling I only got twice before when I beat A Link to the Past the year prior and Illusion of Gaia in 2010 when I was still on community college. This game means a lot to me, even now that I am an adult in his early thirties. No...I think in many ways it means more to me now that I am an adult. Going through the process of growing up with Link made me reflect on the wonder and beauty of childhood and the importance of keeping those feelings when you grow up and mature. I said earlier that this was *one* of my favorites. This phrasing is deliberate since I place 2D and 3D Zeldas separately. A Link to the Past is far and away my favorite 2D game, if not my favorite Zelda and Super Nintendo game in general, with the Oracle games (which I beat around the same time NintendoCapriSun was playing them) following very close behind. For 3D...it's actually a 3 way tie between Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess. Ocarina did a LOT to establish the concentions of the Zelda formula I love in 3D. Majora's Mask has a macabre and gripping overall narrative made up of many, MANY micro stories that enrich the world and the ganeplay experience. Twilight Princess has a great story (improved considerably by the same mangaka team behind Ocarina) and *EASILY* the most creative dungeons in the entire franchise. All that said, a lot of what I feel not not be there I'd I hadn't played this game and A Link to the Past. I played these games at the right place at the right time and I can never forget how these games made me think of games as true experiences rather than merely games. I eventually beat Final Fantasy VII the same year I beat Ocarina (or was it the year before, most of my college years blend a little too close together) and I reflected on how different and similar they were. Yes, the plots were different, but they both set out to make 3D versions of their 2D predecessors and are often touted as the Greatest Games of All Time for not only doing so, but setting the standard for all 3D games to come. *EVERY* 3D Zelda title is compared to Ocarina of Time. *EVERY* mainline Final Fantasy game is compared to Final Fantasy VII. Without these games, we wouldn't have quite the fandom for either franchise. I want to close off this wall of text by thanking *YOU.* Thank you for this wonderfully deep and personal retrospective. This game definitely means a lot to you, and that feeling was tangible with every word you said. I hope to see more Zelda retrospectives in the future (as well as that Metroid one you teased). Thank you, from a fellow Zelda fan.
I appreciate you sharing all this with me and thank you so much for the kind words. The reason I do this is to connect with other fans and share my love for this series with others. I have done an older video on A Link to the Past and the first two NES games. I've covered other Nintendo games too (Mario and others). Once again, thank you and Stay Nerdporeal!
This retrospective really details everything Brings back memories when my brother brought home my first console with OOT (he originally intended the game for my sister) I may have not grown up when this game came out but the n64 was my newest console of that time (2010-2011) It was the first game I ever beat my myself and I'm so glad it exists
Yeah. I already miss the Zelda format. The open world play was beautiful but nowhere as compelling or rewarding as the previous games in my opinion. Yeah I know mine is in the minority but this was the first time I was bored with a zelda game. Glad you enjoy it though... Hopefully TOTK will be great
@@Nerdporeal Maybe they could do a “OoT Remake” someday and i mean like full redesign where they could make the journey to kokiri forest the way they originally intended It’s crazy how much this game was gonna have in it but they couldn’t do it do to storage space or something like that While i do miss the Zelda Formula the way they give the player so much freedom in BOTW When i play the old zelda games i feel like a mouse in a maze puzzle💀 BOTW does still have some elements of the Zelda Formula ie. all the shrines are practically paying homage to the Zelda formula (at least thats the feeling i got when doing them) Anyways i hope TOTK is amazing and thank you for this amazing video you put together. 10/10 i will recommend to my friend’s.
@@Nerdporeal Not even gonna lie though rewards in these old zelda games feels so much more special when you get them as opposed to getting items and equipment in BOTW They gotta find a balance with that
Agreed. Didn't feel as impactful. My issue with open world games. I barely felt an incentive to keep playing. I forced myself to finish it. Need some dungeons too....
I genuinely needed this play-by-play review after a rough time. Absolutely helped with a wonderful trip through this classic nostalgia. Thank you for this.
I make these videos to kinda create a memory of happier times. I was happy to experience this game and it has stayed with me since. I am real happy you got something out of this, that is the other reason i make these videos, to provide an escape. You have no idea, you sharing that makes me feel. Thank you for that! I hope you check out the rest of the channel and find something that interests you. Stay Nerdporeal my friend!
Hey, man. Just found this video in my suggesteds. Thanks so much for making this. It's like playing through OfT with a narrator, I love it! It must have taken a lot of work
I first played ocarina of time in my sophomore year of highschool. It was truly an epic experience!! My beloved dog passed around the time I beat it and it helped me with my mourning and it will hold a special place in my heart because of that.
Thank you for sharing your story. I'm glad this game helped you escape into Hyrule. This game truly raised my interest in epic fantasy and a few short years later, the LOTR films came out. No subsequent game after this lived up to this one.
I also got this game for Christmas .. I was 16 years old and working at a Meijer Dept. Store at the time. I had made enough money in the months leading up to Christmas and bought my own TV (13 in) and an N-64. It's probably the best Christmas morning I can remember.
Thanks for sharing your story. That was me a few years later with the gamecube and Mario Sunshine. I usually talk about this type of stuff in my video game related podcasts called chillporeal here on my channel.
I'm only 2 hours in, and while I appreciate the effort that was put into this video, I feel like this was 95% a video recap of what happens in the game. Generally for retrospectives some analysis and contextualisation is provided and I was hoping to hear your opinion on the different aspects of the design and story, how the mechanics either enhance or inhibit the experience, or something else, instead of a basal summary. The best aspect of this video was very much the intro when you were summarising your introduction to the game, it's development and related media. I'll update this comment with a reply if I have any notable changes to my opinion.
Thanks for watching. I am not going to attempt to change your opinion. There are plenty of other channels that already do what you stated. This was a personal thing for me and i wanted to retell this epic story in my own words with commentary. It is very much a retrospective but it's my own and no one elses. You can skip to the end to hear my opinions
I was feeling the same thing and while it's not to say the video isn't entertaining but I almost wonder if this kind of video should be categorized differently like I'm not even sure what retrospective means anymore, it's almost like this video was telling the experience of this game in a novel/story book form which is cool and I don't see that being done anywhere else which makes me wonder if it should be labeled as something else
What a tremendous video! It was thoroughly enjoyable to watch this over the course of a week and hearing your friends experience. This game was the first game I played a child and remains my favourite game of all time because of how special and fun it is to me. Keep up the amazing content!
Thank you for watching all five hours. I had this video in mind ever since I started my channel but I wanted to cover the earlier games first. The montages for each part are what I am most proud of, wanted to give the viewer an epic feel.
You took me right back to my earliest days of playing OoT with my brother right up to talking about TP with my friends in high school. What your friend described with Link’s different ages is similar to how I used to feel. I was 10 when I played OoT, so you can imagine how much I would have admired adult Link as a cool character. I thought that I’d have blue earrings when I grew up 😂 I’ve watched a lot of Zelda videos, but your intro and ending both had footage that I’d never seen before. Great job digging up so many clips from the past and thanks for sharing!
Thanks man. Did the opening montage get you pumped? I hope you check out some of the other retrospectives i did. This particular one took me three months to make and i was happy to include my friend in this. Very emotional editing
I’ve had this video playing in the background for the past 3 days while I’ve been working on some college assignments, and I finally finished it today. I am profoundly impressed. I really appreciate that you put so much time and effort into recording and editing this video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m only 20, but I first played Ocarina of Time on the Wii’s virtual console when I was a little kid, so I have a ton of nostalgia for it. It’s one of my absolute favorite games. Watching this video and listening to you go over every little detail took me back to when I was 10 years old and playing that game for the first time. I’m so grateful for that. You’ve earned my subscription today. I look forward to seeing more quality content from you. Keep up the good work, you’ve done something truly special here.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. It's so cool to see people your age holding the classics to high esteem. I have covered other Nintendo games as retrospectives including the earlier Zeldas (since I'm doing them in order moreorless) and plan to do plenty more in the future. Good luck with college and thank you for the kind words.
I love to watch Ocarina of Time video content such as icebergs, retrospectives,… and like to think that by now I know almost everything about it, but I remember the title screen different than in this video, yes indeed it starts with Link on Epona for sometime and than switching to the scene with Twinrova, but than my copy just started over. I never saw the scene with Link, Sheik on the bridge and Ganondorf riding on the the title screen??? Maybe its a version difference like the green/red blood and the chanting in the firetemple. Awesome video!!
@@Nerdporeal “Iceberg videos” embody this fandom; copious amounts of research go into a video to reveal information about a particular subject to pique the curiosity of those interested. This research is then organized into “tiers” or levels, with each level depicting how accessible or how well-known that aspect of a fandom is. So how deeper you go at the iceberg, the least know the information becomes :) hope you understand it, youtube is full of Iceberg video about everything, you should really check out some about Zelda if you want, maybe some video ideas for yourself come to mind ;)
This just came up in my suggestions and I am glad it has! Nice review and it brought back memories-and things I didn’t know- when I got this on release day as an undergraduate. Subscribed to see what else you have to offer.
2:04:33 I kinda chuckled when you said “The way out is blocked”. The “Hero of Time” can summon supernatural abilities such as Din’s Fire and smite creatures the size of Bongo Bongo, but he cannot step over rope… 😂
My fiance's little sister is obsessed with this game. Every time she comes over she wants to play on the switch and its fun watching someone new try to figure out what to do, but I give hints and help when she gets stuck.
During the Volvagia fight, when he drops rocks down on you, you can climb down the ledge of the platform. None of the rocks can touch you. Same goes for when he chases you, he can't reach you so he immediately goes back down one of the holes. In this way the fight is altogether easier and faster, and possible to do without taking any damage at all.
Bought the game used in 2000 when I was fifteen, and inadvertently had the original fire temple music and Ganondorf with red blood. My most poignant memory was the bittersweet moment when getting to the Water Temple. Before that point, you were in the "beginning" of the game. After beating that temple (which was never as terrible as everyone pretends it was) you were now closer to the end of the game.
Hey we are the same age! I got a similar feeling from beating the Water Temple. It was the beginning of the end of the game and my anticipation was high.
The water temple has absolutely atrocious pacing, that's why everyone hated (and continues to hate) it. It's a terrible level with terrible design, snd thsts ok. It's quite a bit more bearable on the DS, due to having the boots quickly changeable. The pacing is still awful, it's just substantially less annoying to play.
I got this game the year it came out and never realised the fire temple had a controversy. It was stupid controversy anyways and didn't hear about it until later on in life when RUclips became more popular did I hear about the controversy. Either way, the temple music is some sensitive person crying about nothing to have their way.
@@iami3rian394 I hate the water temple, it is the hardest one in the game and that's because the damn iron boots needing to be put on or taken off to get to certain areas. If it wasn't for the annoyance of having to sink to get to room to lower or raise the water levels, I think the water temple would been a little bit easier. Not the enemies that make it hard it the flawed design of the temple.
We are ao privileged to have played this masterpiece in our youth.. Ps: anyone else love spending hours fishing and using the blue tunic and iron boots to see all the fish 🎣?
I played this game for weeks and weeks, maybe months, I thought I was close to finishing the game when I finally got stuck, didnt know what to do, and gave up, and I was just at the WATER TEMPLE!! Looks like I was only half way there, had no idea ther was so much content still remaining.
Water Temple i got stuck too at first. How was i to know when you raise the water to level 2 that there was an opening where the platform was........for a small key
Ocarina of time was the second video game I ever played. And it was the first 3D game I ever played. To this day, I love this game. I still play it quite often, although Twilight Princess is my favorite in the series, I still love Ocarina of Time more and always will.
@@Nerdporeal Gameplay, Story, art style, music, and dungeons all go to Twilight Princess, I just like it more, but I'm much more emotionally attached to Ocarina of Time. I hope that makes more sense! When I read my comment out loud for the first time I realized it sounded a little confusing, but I was too lazy to change it lol.
I hope you enjoy it. I and most of us adults, have too little time to play games, so....kinda what this video can be for too.... thank you for watching!
I'm just about to start watching the video. I plan on watching the whole but I thought I could comment first and then I will reply to this when I finished it. Ocarina of Time is my all-time favorite game. I was eighteen when it came out and I feel that was a great age to experience that. I had grown up with a link to the past and Link's Awakening up until this point Super Mario 64 was probably the only other big good 3D game.
Sorry I accidentally replied under somebody else's comment but I'm sure you saw it. I could tell you worked hard on this video and I could tell that you really have a heart for Zelda
I was a senior in highschool when this came out I took remember winter break my friends come over we took turns playing and helping each other solving dungeons spring I got my wisdom teeth out and was off for few more days that's when I got to gerudo dessert
Also, Bombchu appeared in Majora's Mask. And they appeared in the Oracle Games as seeker bombs. They also appeared in Phantom Hourglass where Link could draw their path on the touch screen. As a minor note, the "real" animal bombchu that these bombs were based on in-universes, appear in Majora's Mask and Windwaker.
Very awesome retrospective..I’m definitely a new subscriber and fan. Thanks for such great content! Btw I’m old school Iv been playing Zelda since the NES days. Right now I’m playing ocarina of time again on my old GameCube with the special edition that comes with part 1 and part 2, ocarina of time, Majoras mask and the 20 minute playable demo of windwalker.
Thank you so much for watching this. I actually saw the cartoon as a child first before playing the NES games. It took me years to beat them, long after I beat A Link to the Past. I stumbled onto the secrets when I was older and finally completed them.
This might be the best OoT retrospective I've seen. It's feels like I'm reliving my own experience with it. Do you have plans or any interest covering other Zelda games?
I am glad you got something out of this. I made other retrospectives like this if you're interested. ALTTP and the OG Zeldas I did as well as early Mario
@@Nerdporeal Both of these versions are masterpieces in their own ways. i love the artstyle and new content of the switch remake and I adore the gameplay and music of the original. One is not better than the other and that is perfect for me.
Yes. I barely have time to play games now, so I made this video for people to rexperience it in retrospect who are in a similar boat. Thanks for watching
The funny thing is, Koume and Kotake will really haunt you if you stay in the room for, how long was it, 8min? :D They come back invisible! Thanks for this video :)
I try to make sense of things in context of the games. Did the sages fall in battle before link finds them as the sage? Are they spirits in the cutscenes?
I kinda think they did but were protected by the Forces of Providence like Gandalf until their duty or mission was complete. Once it was done, they left or stayed in the temples. I forget
Probably one of the biggest and most detailed retrospectives. Thank for this. Critical note: please work on your pronunciations of certain names, hearing you butcher Nabooru’s name and others was rough to hear.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this. I appreciate your feedback but I was aiming To make this as authentic as possible, I pronounced the names the way I read them years ago. There was no guide in pronunciations then and I guess old habits die hard.
Hey these are some great retrospectives and stories! But, maybe it's just me, but the game sound and music are too loud, which can be a bit unpleasant to listen to when it drones out your voice
You are the first to state this. I thought the volume of music and sound was low enough for you to hear my voice. The intention was to be as immersive as possible. I hope you stick around and i will consider it in future vids. Stay Nerdporeal!
Yo, you monetized the absolute crap out of this video. It really interrupts the enjoyment of spacing out and listening to your script. I respect the hustle, you totally deserve the compensation for your time and effort, but it is disappointing that the only option to do so hurts the flow of the video. I hope that there eventually arises an opportunity to fund your videos that isn't damaging to the experience but until then, keep up the awesome work.
Cool video but watching an ad every 5 minutes for 5 hrs is kind of wak honestly. Made me stop watching after 30 minutes. But Definetly my favorite game of all time. Good cover of the game
I have the video divided into chapters so if there is a part you like, check it out. The post story part you dont want to miss. I hope you change your mind and check the rest out. Stay Nerdporeal
How does bro manage to pronounce every single name wrong. no joke, every name so far up to cuckoo has been wrong but since he's an actual oot og im inclined to let it slide im just a pronunciation freak when it comes to video games update: at least he doesnt say "Jerudo" like some absolute baffoons so that is good
Haha, when i was a kid that is exactly how i pronounced Gerudo. I think it sounds better than with the hard G sound. There was no pronounciation guide and i didnt know Japanese at the time. I had to do my best and use my imagination to sound these names and give them meaning to my gameplay. You are not the only pronounciation freak in these comments haha
Jesus 4 1/2 hrs before any actual analysis. If you write a book critique you dont generally summarize every single chapter…no one who clicked on your 5+hr video retrospective hasnt played the game already
Analysis is only part of it. I wanted to retell the story in my own words with some commentary of how i felt then. The chapters i made for this reason. This isnt a book critique brah, this is my retrospective lol and ill do it anyway i please.
@@Nerdporeal you asked your audience to tell you what they think of your retrospective in your pinned comment. So i did. If i had said you did a good job would you clap back back by telling me thats a subjective opinion? The only feedback you’re interested in is having equally tedious nerds tell you what a special boy you are.
@aworldwithoutzinc3828 yeah i heard your opinion and rejected it. Theres plenty of videos out there for you that meet your standard. Saying my video is boring because there is not enough analysis for you is just rude. If you dont like it, thats fine but this was what i wanted to do. Not everyone feels the way you do, some havent had the chance or the time to play in years and this video can help satiate that nostalgia and relive their experiences when they did play. This isnt an echo chamber brah, go be rude elsewhere.
@@Nerdporeal compared to every other retrospective I've ever watched, this is not a retrospective. It's sort of like a condensed walk-through or something. Every other retrospective I have watched they tend to speak on development process to release of said game, game mechanics, the Era the game was released in, its impact on future games, among many other things. You are literally walking through the game and speaking about Link as if it's a story. Hence, not a retrospective. So your title is clickbait for whatever this is. I'm glad it's yours. I'm sure you spent a lot of time on it. But it's not a retrospective.
@@Nerdporeal I am gonna re watch just to make sure I am not being a complete ass, but as of right now, I still don't think this is a retrospective. Its a wonderful piece of Zelda content that I enjoyed, please don't take what I'm saying as not enjoying it or even criticism. I just wouldn't call this a retrospective at all lol. I kept thinking it the whole way through which pushed me to make my original comment.
I do recount the story. I do add some takes. You can skip to after the story part to get more takes. I try not to copy other channels. I get what you are saying. Others have had similar criticisms. So im cool man. I hope you can enjoy it. Stay Nerdporeal

Majora’s Mask next!
Thank YOU for watching the five hours.
those are the memories man
I liked your video.
Amazing how good you can get at games before you're even able to read. That's why I accept no excuse from those that find games too hard to get into!
Thank You so much for sharing this!

Hearing Malon's voice singing the lullaby in the credits... Always gives me chills
Same
I do still admire Nintendos dedication to text boxes in a world of voice overs. They keep helping the kids read better.
Another reason I was disappointed with the direction of BOTW. I feel it's better to leave voices to the imagination. I'm grateful that they haven't totally abandoned the textbox. Taking away what made this series distinct to make it less distinct
It's midnight and I should be going to bed but I can't resist a lengthy retrospective!
I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching!
Thank you, I am so glad you enjoyed this and am even more happy that you've been inspired to make your own Zelda content. I can't wait to see it
It looks like your prediction came true! It's getting big.
I’ve started this video like 5x
It’s so comforting and nostalgic I go to sleepy every time. It makes me feel warm idk
This retrospective really details everything
Brings back memories when my brother brought home my first console with OOT (he originally intended the game for my sister)
I may have not grown up when this game came out but the n64 was my newest console of that time (2010-2011)
It was the first game I ever beat my myself and I'm so glad it exists
Thank you for sharing your story. I'm glad you liked it.
Watching this while playing BOTW is surreal af
Crazy how far video games have grown and evolved over the years
Yeah. I already miss the Zelda format. The open world play was beautiful but nowhere as compelling or rewarding as the previous games in my opinion. Yeah I know mine is in the minority but this was the first time I was bored with a zelda game. Glad you enjoy it though... Hopefully TOTK will be great
@@Nerdporeal Maybe they could do a “OoT Remake” someday and i mean like full redesign where they could make the journey to kokiri forest the way they originally intended
It’s crazy how much this game was gonna have in it but they couldn’t do it do to storage space or something like that
While i do miss the Zelda Formula the way they give the player so much freedom in BOTW
When i play the old zelda games i feel like a mouse in a maze puzzle💀
BOTW does still have some elements of the Zelda Formula ie. all the shrines are practically paying homage to the Zelda formula (at least thats the feeling i got when doing them)
Anyways i hope TOTK is amazing and thank you for this amazing video you put together. 10/10 i will recommend to my friend’s.
@@Nerdporeal Not even gonna lie though rewards in these old zelda games feels so much more special when you get them as opposed to getting items and equipment in BOTW
They gotta find a balance with that
Agreed. Didn't feel as impactful. My issue with open world games. I barely felt an incentive to keep playing. I forced myself to finish it. Need some dungeons too....
I appreciate the kind words and who knows what the future holds....
It must have taken a lot of work
Thank you. I see you're in Chicago. Awesome! It took three months to make. I wanted to include as much as i could.
One of the coolest things about this is learning that navi is named for the navigation thing. I'll never look at her name the same lmao
Yep. Thanks for checking this out. I like the avatar by the way. Rereading the series now!
@@Nerdporeal The last section of the video, after the recap, I really like :)
Did you enjoyed it at least
It is a combination of things but it is my retrospective, making you experience this from my pov im 98 to 99 when i first played this.
3:35:47 Giant versions of them were in Hyrule Warriors. Being slow moving heavy armored high explosives you had to either guard or destroy.
I thought that I’d have blue earrings when I grew up 😂
I’ve watched a lot of Zelda videos, but your intro and ending both had footage that I’d never seen before. Great job digging up so many clips from the past and thanks for sharing!
Thanks man. Did the opening montage get you pumped? I hope you check out some of the other retrospectives i did. This particular one took me three months to make and i was happy to include my friend in this. Very emotional editing
1:48:27 I never knew you could jump over the main gate, I always jumped over the side wall.
Love when videos like this pop up on my recommended! Good shit. Subscribed
Thank you. Hope you have a great day.
Thank you so much. Not sure what an iceberg is though besides the thing that sunk the Titanic
@@Nerdporeal
“Iceberg videos” embody this fandom; copious amounts of research go into a video to reveal information about a particular subject to pique the curiosity of those interested.
There's plenty i did before this and plenty planned after. Thanks for watching this.
2:04:33 I kinda chuckled when you said “The way out is blocked”. The “Hero of Time” can summon supernatural abilities such as Din’s Fire and smite creatures the size of Bongo Bongo, but he cannot step over rope… 😂
Hyrule is full of mysterious forces, who knows what ancient magic keeps Link in. Some magic Evil Rope haha
My fiance's little sister is obsessed with this game. Every time she comes over she wants to play on the switch and its fun watching someone new try to figure out what to do, but I give hints and help when she gets stuck.
I love seeing younger people playing games I grew up with and giving them subtle hints. So Timeless... Thanks for sharing that
During the Volvagia fight, when he drops rocks down on you, you can climb down the ledge of the platform.
@@deathjoker666 They changed the logo on the shields too, for precisely the same reason. I agree, it's utter madness.
This was an absolutely amazing video. Keep up the amazing work
Thank you so much for watching all five hours. This is my most ambitious video. I did other Zelda retrospectives as well in case you are interested.
I love, long form opinionated deep dives into class games. Starting with your experience with the advertising launch took me back immediately. I was 8
I'm glad you enjoyed this. Thanks for watching this!
This video is incredible, amazing job man
Thank you so much for the kind words. I've done others on earlier games
I’m only sixteen but I used to play this game all the time on my grandma’s N64 that used to belong to my uncle when he was little
Thanks for sharing. I'm glad people your age are discovering this game and enjoying it. A timeless game that anyone from any era can connect to
Ocarina of time was the second video game I ever played. And it was the first 3D game I ever played. To this day, I love this game. I still play it quite often, although Twilight Princess is my favorite in the series, I still love Ocarina of Time more and always will.
I am curious. How is TP your favorite in the series but yet you love Ocarina more. Thank you so much for sharing by the way.
I love this because im not too interested in playing the game but im interested in the story, thanks!

I hope you enjoy it.
Awesome. Which dungeon did you yourself beat?
Also, Bombchu appeared in Majora's Mask. And they appeared in the Oracle Games as seeker bombs. They also appeared in Phantom Hourglass where Link could draw their path on the touch screen. As a minor note, the "real" animal bombchu that these bombs were based on in-universes, appear in Majora's Mask and Windwaker.
Interesting. I really need to replay all those.... Especially the Oracle Games
@@Nerdporeal Those games had a lot of stuff hidden in the link-cable/password system.
I fuckin love the n64 Zelda’s so much, can’t get enough of em, gonna listen to this at work 🙏🙏🙏
I hope you enjoy it.
For those that made it to the end - your the real ones!
As a big OOT fan, this was a joy to watch in its entirety.
Thank you so much. I've done other retrospectives for Zelda Mario and other series. This one in particular was a labor of love
That intermission claps soo hard
I wanted to make this like those old epic films hence the intermissions. Hope you enjoyed this vid
@ It’s one of my favourites to listen to as background noise when I sleep , I love this vid
not my first time watching, but this won't be my last, either.
you really nailed this one, Nerdporeal
Thanks Dempsey! I'm surprised you can get through five hours of my voice.
@@Nerdporeal Dude, this is enthralling. I was at the premiere, too. This is love, and it comes across as such. Superbly well done
Thank you so much for this video!!
You are so welcome! I am glad you enjoyed it
tomorrow, instead of feeling alone.
I'm gonna watch this video and eat popcorn ♥
I'm so sorry you feel like that. You're not alone. I hope you enjoy this.
Ah man this video is great. You should do one of majoras mask or twilight princess haha.
Thanks. I hope you check out the rest of the channel. I made similar vids for other games
@@Nerdporeal been watching for a while, i loved your house of the dragon reviews, can't wait for more content, especially zelda
Eventually. I did cover A Link to the Past and the original two. The former is my most viewed video
Ahh, memories of easier times, thanks, bud
I am glad you got something out of this. I made other retrospectives like this if you're interested. ALTTP and the OG Zeldas I did as well as early Mario
You did this game justice. Though I will forever prefer link's awakening to ocarina of time. This is the definitive 3D zelda game.
Did you like the Switch remake?
@@Nerdporeal Both of these versions are masterpieces in their own ways. i love the artstyle and new content of the switch remake and I adore the gameplay and music of the original. One is not better than the other and that is perfect for me.
I didnt play that one growing up. Handheld wasnt my jam. Always a shortage of batteries
@@Nerdporeal Really? The gameboy color had a battery life of 40 hours with just three AAs.
Og gameboy for me....had 4 double As. Family struggled so batteries were rare in the house. Didnt have a GB color
Nice Video🎉
Thank you! There is one for Mario 64 and earlier games in those series that I did to your enjoyment
Great work Ayway we can get a breath of the wild Retrospective Thanks
Thank You so much. BOTW retrospective will happen eventually.
Love the comparison to FF6, another classic and great game. Great video!
I played FF6 after the fact and saw right away the similarity. Thank you!
This was awesome! Gotta do majoras mask now
Thanks. Majoras Mask will be an interesting one to tackle
Greatest game ever made hands down
Yes. I barely have time to play games now, so I made this video for people to rexperience it in retrospect who are in a similar boat. Thanks for watching
i love this
I am very glad you got something out of this. Stay Nerdporeal
The algorithm strikes again with a gem
You mean Spiritual Stone? Thanks for watching and i hope you find my other video content to your liking. Stay Nerdporeal...
I just can’t help but to believe darunia is canonically a brotha
Yup. I am with you there haha. A true man!
The funny thing is, Koume and Kotake will really haunt you if you stay in the room for, how long was it, 8min? :D They come back invisible!
Thanks for this video :)
I never knew that! Thanks for watching.
@@Nerdporeal I learned that last year, when watching an ice berg video! :)
I forget
Omg 5 hours worth, just enough to get some nappage for work. Don't mind if I do.....table for 1
Serving nostalgia, baked and crisped to perfection with love
@@Nerdporeal will high scores be served for desert
Would you ever consider doing this long form video on any other 3D Zelda such as majoras mask?
Yes. I will need to replay Majoras Mask first. It's been a long time since I last played
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it. All hail the Dragon!
I'll just sleep to this and remember nothing from it.
what is this a video guide book?
And More.... You're Welcome
Is the decu nuts password 2 3 1 for everyone or is it random generator
It's the same everytime
@@Nerdporeal very good amigo now let me sleep with my headphones on omw watching your 5 hour video as ASMR
@@thrjfi5360 I'm surprised you're still sane after doing that lol
Probably one of the biggest and most detailed retrospectives. Thank for this. Critical note: please work on your pronunciations of certain names, hearing you butcher Nabooru’s name and others was rough to hear.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this. I appreciate your feedback but I was aiming To make this as authentic as possible, I pronounced the names the way I read them years ago. There was no guide in pronunciations then and I guess old habits die hard.
KO-kiri
Or
ko-KIRI
THAT IS THE QUESTION
We are gonna drink till the fairy's hot
Spiked Lon Lon Milk?
@@Nerdporeal u first kind of sketches me out after seeing that funky writing on the bottle
Add Ocarina of time to the list of ridiculously long analysis videos akin to patriciantv. Hell Yeah!
I didn't realize until too late that I typed 40 Plus pages of Script...
Thanks for not being cringe. I mean it.
What do you mean? Are others cringe?
The video is way to long, and....
I just can't get enough of it!!!!
Stay Nerdporeal!
gone when you said deeku* and kokari*
That's how I pronounced it when I first played it. LOL
cool video, seems more like a glorified walkthrough than a retrospective though
Thanks. It is my retrospective and part of it was telling the story in my own words.
Playthrough or retrospective
Retrospective. It is not a playthrough, part of it is a retelling of the story with my own commentary. You can skip to the end if you don't like it.
Naviiiii... Naviiiiii.... get the pepto bismol🤮🤮🤮🤮
HEY! HEY! LISTEN!
I will keep that in mind. Care to share how you got into Ocarina of Time?
Cool video but watching an ad every 5 minutes for 5 hrs is kind of wak honestly. Made me stop watching after 30 minutes. But Definetly my favorite game of all time. Good cover of the game
I have the video divided into chapters so if there is a part you like, check it out. The post story part you dont want to miss. I hope you change your mind and check the rest out. Stay Nerdporeal
This is not a retrospective. It's a step by step instruction manual
Yeah it actually is and it's mine.
How does bro manage to pronounce every single name wrong. no joke, every name so far up to cuckoo has been wrong but since he's an actual oot og im inclined to let it slide im just a pronunciation freak when it comes to video games
update: at least he doesnt say "Jerudo" like some absolute baffoons so that is good
Haha, when i was a kid that is exactly how i pronounced Gerudo. I think it sounds better than with the hard G sound. There was no pronounciation guide and i didnt know Japanese at the time. I had to do my best and use my imagination to sound these names and give them meaning to my gameplay. You are not the only pronounciation freak in these comments haha
How is anyone expected to watch this when you have ads running every 3 minutes? Terrible.
That's what happens when you have chapters. We all deal with it.
15 min into the video, and no ads yet.
You're over exaggerating with how frequent the ads are.
@@Nerdporeal well its boring as hell. If thats what you going, for you did a great job.
Boring is subjective lol
This is not a retrospective.
It actually is and its mine.
@duncanedgin9433 i talk about all that stuff including my own experiences in that era. I just do it differently.
Stay Nerdporeal
intro way too long
