- This is an amateur video of myself tying a 4-string chotki (prayer rope) knot and how to make and finish a 33 knot bracelet. Hope to get something up better soon - so please forgive the bad camera shots over my shoulder!
I was told to make a chotki as a spiritual direction assignment to gain patience😂 first time making one and I’m very much growing in the virtue
This is the most wonderful and helpful tutorial I have found!! I have been looking at videos for 6 hours now and this is the first to make sense. I would love it if you would do a 100 knot tutorial!!!
Mother, this is a wonderful - and most helpful - tutorial. It is the only one that actually shows the steps clearly and slowly and, perhaps most importantly, to completion! A chotki can be an invaluable spiritual aid, the thought of being able to prayerfully make one for oneself (once you get the hang of it!) feels quite a blessing. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you Mother Gabriella for doing this video. I have now successfully made 6 prayer ropes. Three 33 knots, Two 50 knots, and one 100 knots prayer ropes. I have followed your method to the letter and success. Thank you again!
Thank you, I felt called to make a chotki and though mine isn’t as tidy as yours I am happy with the result using both knots. Now is time to pray the Jesus prayer.

As a former Greek Orthodox, who converted to Roman Catholicism and now getting back to his Eastern Tradition, but through the Catholic Church, I find it really blessing to be able to create my own Chotki!

Thank you Mother for this video. I have made a few rosaries using a two strand chotki knot. However, I was very surprised to see that you use FOUR strands, and I was wondering about this. How does this knot compare to the two strands one? Is it the same knot, except larger? Thanks again!

Great video. Best instruction I've found. Is there a method for making a chotki that isn't a bracelet?
Wow, the 4 strand seems SO much easier to tie than a 2 strand. Still a lot of loop-de-loops, but a bit more manageable. I am curious though as to some of the ones I've seen that just have one bead and no cross. They look absolutely seamless. No idea how they do that lol.

between this style and the winged style of chotki tying where you must go in and pull the string out through each side 3 times, it is the same knot right?

Sister, I am very confused. Can you please inform me where this "new" practice of chotki tying originated? Myself and my family always prayed the Holy Rosary in our Byzantine Catholic tradition. My family in Poland and Slovakia who are Greek (Byzantine) Catholic have always prayed the Holy Rosary. To my knowledge chotki tying is a Russian Orthodox Christian tradition NOT a Byzantine Catholic one. Perhaps you can enlighten me. Thank you every so for your time. God Bless.
Loyalty Coptic Thank you for your historical take on the origin of the prayer rope. How interesting. However, I was asking the sisters if they would explain their use of chotki tying, as it is not part of the Greek (Byzantine) Catholic tradition. The Holy Rosary has always been and still is prayed by Greek (Byzantine) Catholics, not the chotki.
Mari S. The Jesus Prayer has always been apart of the Byzantine Catholic as well as Orthodox traditions - there just happen to be some countries where there is a heavy influence from the Roman Catholic tradition, which has a long standing history of praying the rosary.

Dear Sr. G., thank you for your kind response. Please explain further how the Jesus Prayer has "always" been part of personal devotions for Byzantine Catholics. To my knowledge the prayer rope is part of the habit of Eastern Orthodox monastic communities. From what I have read the Jesus Prayer came into being in the Orthodox Church during the 14th Century. However, this was rejected by Roman Catholic Theologians until the 20th Century. If this prayer was rejected up until the 20th Century how then could it "always" been a part of Byzantine Catholic spiritual devotion. While comparisons have been made, the Holy Rosary and the chotki are part of two separate religions. Furthermore, the majority of Greek (Byzantine) Catholic Churches and Religious Orders that began in the United States were founded for the most part by a majority of those with Slovak, Ruthenian, Hungarian and Galician (Lemko) ancestry. The immigrants from these regions had Catholicism as their countries religion. So yes, they did have a "heavy influence" from the Western Roman Catholic Church, which was willingly absorbed into their Greek (Byzantine) Catholic Faith. Nowhere is there a mention in old Greek (Byzantine) Catholic prayer books or service books to the Jesus Prayer as a form of spiritual devotion. For example, I have a prayer book from my grandmother printed in Uzhorod, Ukraine in 1902. I have read through it many times and again no mention of the Jesus Prayer however, there are several pages devoted to the mysteries and how to pray the Holy Rosary.

To think that all these traditions and beliefs do not bring you one iota closer to Salvation....Jesus is the way, the truth and the life....
I believe the word you might be seeking is grace.
In what way does praying "Lord Jesus Christ Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner" bring you not one iota closer to salvation, which is ultimately Christ. I recognize you are probably protestant, but come on man, think a little bit. Also this is a lovely video of a woman sharing of her skill with the internet community, why do you have to tear someone down who is doing a lovely thing in assisting people cultivate greater devotion to the Lamb of God?
Sounds like protestant nonsense to me.
