Call me crazy, but I think I liked the way the shiplap looked with just the primer paint on? Otherwise I am so impressed by you & your husband doing all that work! Great job! You have an adorable family 😊
Just a helpful hint...cut along the top of the baseboard moulding with a utility knife before you use the prybar. You'll have a clean edge, and it goes faster and easier
First, thank you so much for the video!! I just wanted to warn you and anyone reading... We did some stuff on our last home and broke a small piece of the baseboard, same size as you. It was almost paper thin. We later found out it was big enough for mice to come in, and boy did they! They moved in and invited all their friends and distant relatives. If you don't fill it with wood, put some steel wool in the crack. Also, peppermint oil on cotton swabs help.
Love this video. Just a thought. Use a spray gun. You could even spray outside before installing. I've never thought about using plywood before. Great idea.
i did my hallway and my breakfast room all with a hand saw now I have a table saw if I want to make cuts...lol home depot in my town no longer cut 6 0r 8 inch cuts on;y 12 inch now i check two places i went to a family open lumber yard they charged 25 dollars to cut 2 sheets of plywood at 8 inch cuts i'm gonna learn how to use my table saw that's crazy how much they charged was gonna charge me38 dollars and the look on my face he went down some lol
I am seriously SO thankful for your video. I followed this to a T this past week and shiplapped a wall in our bedroom. It turned out amazing because of following your video. So thank you, SO, SO, SO much!
As some have already commented. It’s always better to remove the outlet cover. It would only take a few minutes and the look will be way better and the cut out doesn’t have to be perfect. Longer outlet screws are cheap and easily found at your local hardware store.
I Primed and painted the plywood strips before putting them up... So much easier, no paint between the lines to clean up. I layed 15 strips cut down into 5.5 inches at a time over a tarp, and by the time I was done rolling primer onto the 15th board, the 1st one was ready for paint. I used a fast drying primer and rolled both the primer and paint with a broomstick attached to my roller for comfort... After nailing them with a Brad nailer I covered the tiny holes, retouched and was done my entire 5x8 bathroom in under 2 hrs. What consumed a bit of time was all the prep work... ripping the plywood down to the 5.5 inches and all the sanding I did to make sure they were smooth. Your living rm looks awesome and I love the color you went with... I used the same color for my newly finished shiplap attic.
Love this and great explanation, so many videos just skip over everything and then voila , magic it’s done! You actually went through a lot of stuff thst doesn’t exist in others 👍
Your video is si helpful! Thank you for showing beginners, true beginners how to tackle this job and what things to look out for. I appreciate all the detail! Thanks again!
Glad to see young people doing this kind of stuff!, it looks great! One thing I will tell you though is That Is Not Shiplap, don’t feel bad, Joanna Gaines does not know what shiplap is either, lol , shiplap is exactly that, it was used to build ships and the boards lapped over each other making a watertight seam, Do your self a favor and look it up. , you will be glad you did .
This is the best ship lap beginner video. She tells you about little things that happen while they are working on it and what to do if it happens. Very helpful for me Thanks
You all did great work. I got the confidence to DIY my walls thanks to your video. Why didn't you all use a paint mixed with the primer? I'm definitely buying a brad nailer my RA would have my funds locked up big time nailing them boards manually.
Awesome job! For those about to start a project like this, buy an inexpensive nailer and compressor (can be purchased as a kit). I bought the cheapest one at Home Depot for $139.00 it's been worth every penny. I put up shiplap in my bathroom, new baseboards, crown mouldings around the ceiling and atop the kitchen cabinets.
100% agree. A small compressor can be used for a bunch of things too, and air tools are pretty cheap once you have the compressor. Even things like a tire inflator in nice to have at home, since you now have to pay for air at fuel stations most places.
Your You Tube channel just popped up on my feed! 😃 I just subscribed and I’m so happy to be able to watch your channel now! You have sooooo many interesting videos I wanna watch! From what I’ve already saw, I think you and your husband are an amazing couple who both are so very talented! You are definitely very HARD WORKING ppl who find the time to do the things you’re passionate about (DIY’s) in between working full time, taking care your precious babies, and all the other things you multi-task! You’re a very impressive “couple team” and I felt from my heart to tell you that and I know your parents and in-laws must be so proud of the both of you! Thanks for sharing this DIY and you explained it all in such great detail! The makeover you did to your living room is absolutely beautiful and I love the rustic look! Wow 😮 you are awesome my dear! God bless you and your family and I’ll be watching many more of your videos. 🤗❤️
I saw this video when it was first posted in January when I was first thinking of putting up shiplap in my dining room and I loved the info and the lady who did the video. Now that I've decided to actually do the shiplap, I went back to watch the video again. Holy cow! The amount of commercials is great for the TheSImplifiedSaver and I am really happy for y'all. It is not great for those of us who are having to sit through them. I am a little over 13 minutes into the original video and have watched over 30 minutes of commercials and I am not even exaggerating. It is worth it to me because I think the info in the video is worth it. If I hadn't already seen the video, I would have been gone five minutes into the first 20 minute commercial on gut health. For those of you who are watching this for the first time, I think it is worth watching the commercials - just plan on doing something else during them.
Looks nice. Here’s some tips. 1. Get a nail gun, either air or electric. 2. Unscrew covers and outlets / switches. Cut wood the size of box only. Put outlets / switches back and then covers.
You sound like you're talking to 10 year olds. Also, you made it harder than need be. Just cut the majority of the 8ft boards in half, then stagger. Final step, cut boards to fit in the smaller areas. And you don't need to nail every 6 inches. Also should have used nickels or pennies for spacers.
Shiplap is easy until you have random width boards .Just today I worked with 4 and1/2 some were 4 and 5/8 and some were 4and 3/8 . It was trouble to match the reveal lines in the corners. But we managed. It turned decent .
Awesome job guys👍🤗 I love the way you both worked together! Team work god bless your family and home 🙏🌻 Thank you for sharing and for explaining everything in such great detail.
Hi great job and I agree if me and hubby did it together we definitely would need a marriage counselor to but after 40 yrs o would just get my cast iron skillet out and hit him hard over the head lol just kidding ( maybe ) we also got married at a really young age 16 and 19 so yeah im used to his tantrums so I would be doing it myself anyways just like I did our backsplash with real wood and cut it painted each piece dry brushed it to all I can say is I'm very proud of what I did anyways sorry got carried away did you use nickles for spacers I was told that was the best ?
Good job upgrading to a jig saw also instead of using popsicle sticks get tile spacers 1/8 you can get a box of 100 for $2 you only need like to use 8 at a time if you screw your shiplap to the wall
If you had a compressor and nail gun, You would have done it in half the time. My husband has both compressor and gun so I'm going to use them. I'm also going to prime my boards before I put them up.
I'm wondering why not cut the strips with an angle, something like 7 or 8 percent, alternating the cuts of course or flipping the boards over so you don't have to cut twice which should give the same effect as a nickle gap while still being able to butt them up toe ach other?
Just found your channel! Y'all are so cute! AND, great DIY peeps! I LOVE doing DIY's... once they're done, it's sooo nice to sit back and admire all your hard work!😉 I think your room turned out amazing! Now, I'm off to binge watch your channel! Have a blessed Sunday, girl! Hugs!
I used to tell my husband do you really need that tool? When we started working together I made sure he bought all the tools he needed. To get the job done quickly fast
Thanks for posting- first time I’ve seen cutting shiplap boards to fit the light switch after it’s on the wall. Would save having to get/make an extension for the box but also means your cuts have to be really clean since they are exposed. ....remodel & marriage counseling - Truth.
You did an excellent job explaining and an excellent job on your walls. They are beautiful. Enjoyed your video. You are so adorable ! Keep on DIY. As you found out, the more you do the better you get.
Thank you so much for this video! We just went to Home Depot and got all our supplies and plywood. Did you also use a popsicle stick to separate the boards beside each other or did you only leave a space between the rows?
nat319 we tried to eyeball those and make them a tad bit closer together than the horizontal spaces but you could definitely use a popsicle stick for those!
So trying this project out for our kids room and they informed us at Home Depot they are not allowed to cut ply wood in 6 or 8 inch strips only 12in strips per osha guidelines. So what did you say to get Home Depot to cut the strips in 6in???
Did you consider removing the outlet and switch covers? Will give you more room for error...screws should still be long enough, if not buy some new ones a 1/4" longer, they are inexpensive.
so just being helpful... around the outlets, take off the outlet covers, measure your cuts along the electrical box, pull the outlets out from the box, after putting the shiplap on the wall, re-secure the outlet to the box, and then put your outlet cover on.. .
Hii, I'm brand New to your channel & I'm so glad I found You guys !! Bless your hearts, you did an Amazing Job, with 2 little ones as well. I think you did Great, tackling that Monumental Job with babies in only a Week !! Well done ! Question, did you use any spacers between if piece?? Thx so much 🦋
I may have missed it early in the video but quick question: After you all had the plywood ripped at HD, did you all rip a tongue and groove pattern to better fit the boards or was that the purpose of the popsicle stick? TIA!
Tongue and groove is the ripping they do on the board when you buy the shiplap boards at places like HD. That way there’s a nice fit and finish. But I’ve seen the spacer work just as well. Maybe it’s a South Texas thing that we call it tongue and groove.
Y’all are so cute. Each time you do a project you will get better and better at it. You learn by doing. Glad to see you bought a jigsaw. It’s a very handy tool. Great job!👍
You are so photogenic and your voice is so calming.. I want to do ship lap over bear studs so I don’t think your way will work for me.. Remind your hubby how fortunate he is to work with his beautiful wife::)
Next time try painting the wood and trim before you hang it. It’s much faster. When your done just touch up where you nailed it. When you remove the trim pieces, run a box cutter between the wall and trim. It will come off cleaner. Kill is a good primer and you can’t go wrong w Sherwin Williams paint. When painting such a big area, maybe borrow or rent a spray rig to make the paining go faster. Also, rent a nail gun. It will really make it go faster. Great video! Great results!
Yall, buy a cheap nail gun to put it up. Especially if you're doing a whole room. Trust me it's worth it. Harbor freight has one for $20. And pait the board before you put it up...then you only have to touch up the nail holes
If i want my shiplap to be black should I pant my wall black or must i also pant it white? Very detailed video btw, I don’t have nail gun so this is very helpful. Thank you 😀
Im about to paint my shiplap fireplace but Im stuck on choosing the right white- i thought it had to match the baseboard and trim so now im back to square one. Would you chose alabaster again against your bright white trim if done over?
Mercy, I’m watching this to get an idea how hard it will be 🤪 Bless y’all, using a knife and hand saw on your first room, I definitely give y’all an A+ for sure! 😁 I’m so glad you got a jigsaw for doing your living room! Great job!😋
If you would have used underlayment plywood you would have had a easier time. It doesn't have knots in it and one side is super smooth and actually pretty wood.
I would recommend a higher grade paint next time so you don't need so many coats. SW is great paint but you probably bought an entry level paint. It turned out great though.
Bonus tip. Take your crown and base boards off and put them back on top of the installed shiplap. If you’re doing your entire room you’ll need to cut them down 1/2 (if your using 1/4 board on all walls) in length and you can cut boards in the center or at other straight breaks in the board if you don’t have access to a compound miter saw or don’t want to mess with angles. Furthermore, you can place a quarter round at the bottom of the base to finish off the flooring if you do get new floors without cutting up your current flooring.
Your boards don’t seem to have the lapped edge. When u use a lapped edge you won’t actually see the wall underneath, so then you don’t have the wall painted.
That gray "triangle-thingy" is called a Speed Square.
Call me crazy, but I think I liked the way the shiplap looked with just the primer paint on? Otherwise I am so impressed by you & your husband doing all that work! Great job! You have an adorable family 😊
That look would be what you would call pickleling. Thinner paint with would grain slightly showing through. I like that too.
Just a helpful hint...cut along the top of the baseboard moulding with a utility knife before you use the prybar. You'll have a clean edge, and it goes faster and easier
Wow thank you so much!! We will have to try that next time! :) thank you!

Just a thought. Use a spray gun. You could even spray outside before installing.
I've never thought about using plywood before. Great idea.
You are such a good teacher ii would never do this in a hundred years but you made this project interesting.
She is so pretty 🌺
I love your vloging style. Thanks for sharing your DIY for shiplap. I think we're going to do a wall in our bedroom.
Thank you so much! I wanted to keep it as real as possible. Goodluck with the shiplap wall. Let me know how it turns out!
i did my hallway and my breakfast room all with a hand saw now I have a table saw if I want to make cuts...lol home depot in my town no longer cut 6 0r 8 inch cuts on;y 12 inch now i check two places i went to a family open lumber yard they charged 25 dollars to cut 2 sheets of plywood at 8 inch cuts i'm gonna learn how to use my table saw that's crazy how much they charged was gonna charge me38 dollars and the look on my face he went down some lol

This video is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you from another non-professional DIYer😂
Lovely
But I'm afraid about the little one hanging around the project.
Good job 👏
I love this video and how you explained it was perfect. Best Authentic DIY I've seen for shiplap walls 💓

Great job! Wow, you favor Sandra Bullock
Even sounds like her too
It kills me they didn't cut the hole to go bbn underneath the switch plate for a smoother finish
Yes!!!! I was wtf noooo that looks so cheap
It’s probably easier to paint the wood first before putting it on walls. The good thing is u can hang any framed prints on wood.
i thought the same thing! at least primer it
Your video is si helpful! Thank you for showing beginners, true beginners how to tackle this job and what things to look out for. I appreciate all the detail! Thanks again!

Thank you!! I don’t think I’ve been told that before but I will take it!
I just did my own DIY shiplap and posted my part 1!!!!! Thanks for the inspiring video!!
Your videos are reallyvgood, Abby- makes me want to shiplap in our house!
Sally Clemmons you know Uncle Timmy could do this! He is a handy guy! Thank you!
Awesome job!

Home Depot no longer cut "project cuts." I guess to many "project cuts" and now only cut once per board. At least in my area.
I am surprised they did it the first time. Very time consuming.
Y’all did good for just starting out with DIY. Tools are expensive but investing in some would make everything you do easier . Great job..👍

Lisa Ivins Why say anything??? Rude!

I would suggest bringing the electrical boxes out the thickness of the boards. Take the baseboards off! This is NOT how to install shiplap properly.
Shiplap is easy until you have random width boards .Just today I worked with 4 and1/2 some were 4 and 5/8 and some were 4and 3/8 .

Seems like your children were excellent for something that took a week and a half. Are you able to buy prepainted board?
Excellent job!
Yay! We’re just about to do this in bathrooms
Let me know how it turns out? I want to do an accent wall in my bathroom
If you had a compressor and nail gun, You would have done it in half the time. My husband has both compressor and gun so I'm going to use them. I'm also going to prime my boards before I put them up.

Thank you for your video. I've wanted to do a feature shiplap wall in my bedroom. I'm off to buy the things I need tomorrow.
I can do it.
I'm confused, for painting did you use the alabaster from sherwin williams or the valspar?
Just found your channel! Y'all are so cute! AND, great DIY peeps! I LOVE doing DIY's... once they're done, it's sooo nice to sit back and admire all your hard work!😉 I think your room turned out amazing! Now, I'm off to binge watch your channel! Have a blessed Sunday, girl! Hugs!
Wow I love you! You are so kind and sweet. Thank you for the love! ❤️have a great week!
Quit listening when you were holding your cute daughter LOL. Thank you for the info.
thank you! :)
Do you know something >>> you are the most beautifull youtuber I ve ever seen ......LOL ^_^
thank you so much. so sweet!
Yes, I thought I was watching Sandra Bullock!
I miss your blogs. It’s been 10 days 😮💨Are you doing okay?
Beautiful room. Thank you for sharing your process. We are excited to do our breakfast room and will follow many of your suggestions.
The prime look is pretty too Its looking great 🌺
I used to tell my husband do you really need that tool? When we started working together I made sure he bought all the tools he needed. To get the job done quickly fast
Thanks for posting- first time I’ve seen cutting shiplap boards to fit the light switch after it’s on the wall. Would save having to get/make an extension for the box but also means your cuts have to be really clean since they are exposed.
....remodel & marriage counseling - Truth.
Why do you not prime and paint the boards before you put it up then you can just go around and touch up after? Sounds much easier.
Awesome job!!!
I subscribed.
Thank you for sharing.
You did an excellent job explaining and an excellent job on your walls. They are beautiful. Enjoyed your video. You are so adorable ! Keep on DIY. As you found out, the more you do the better you get.
thank you so much for the positive words! that's what we are finding out with DIY! It gets easier and more fun with time.
Excellent video. Thank you for all the tips.
You’re welcome!
I like your explain you have a good experience
Thanks
This girl kinda looks like Gina Carano🤔
Trial & trial and error it looks wonderful❤
So trying this project out for our kids room and they informed us at Home Depot they are not allowed to cut ply wood in 6 or 8 inch strips only 12in strips per osha guidelines. So what did you say to get Home Depot to cut the strips in 6in???
Gisele Pena mine let me do that. I wouldn’t make that up. Im sorry.
Did you consider removing the outlet and switch covers? Will give you more room for error...screws should still be long enough, if not buy some new ones a 1/4" longer, they are inexpensive.
I think it's cool you just used a hammer and not a nail gun😊
so just being helpful... around the outlets, take off the outlet covers, measure your cuts along the electrical box, pull the outlets out from the box, after putting the shiplap on the wall, re-secure the outlet to the box, and then put your outlet cover on.. .
Yes! Didn't get it on video, but we ended up doing that after realizing we didn't like the way it looked. It turned out much nicer.
Thx so much 🦋
I may have missed it early in the video but quick question:
After you all had the plywood ripped at HD, did you all rip a tongue and groove pattern to better fit the boards or was that the purpose of the popsicle stick?
TIA!
We used the popsicle sticks to add the spaces in between the boards. What is a tongue and groove pattern?
Tongue and groove is the ripping they do on the board when you buy the shiplap boards at places like HD. That way there’s a nice fit and finish. But I’ve seen the spacer work just as well. Maybe it’s a South Texas thing that we call it tongue and groove.
oh i see now! there is no tongue and groove since the pieces of wood are just split. the popsicles sticks are optional!
Awesome job you 2 im thinking of one wall in living room
nice team work really works, hi cutie baby
thank you!
Your room looks amazing. Thank you for sharing.

Your hard work paid off..looks great.
Beautiful job with the shiplap walls! Awesome video, too!
Thank you! My husband gets the credit!
OMG Thanks so much this help me so much... the rooms looks amazing!!!
Y’all need your own show. Thanks!
I’d use trim screws instead of nails.
Thank you 😀
You just made 10 min video to 25 min.
Im about to paint my shiplap fireplace but Im stuck on choosing the right white- i thought it had to match the baseboard and trim so now im back to square one. Would you chose alabaster again against your bright white trim if done over?
Thank you for this video.
The fast motion baby is hilarious.
Mercy, I’m watching this to get an idea how hard it will be 🤪
Bless y’all, using a knife and hand saw on your first room, I definitely give y’all an A+ for sure! 😁
I’m so glad you got a jigsaw for doing your living room!
Great job!😋
Beware, many Home Depot’s will not do this for free. They allow 2 cuts and then so much per cut. AND they won’t cut this much. Be sure to ask first.
I would have done a few things differently ... but all in Looks job and looks good ... but you know you actually made the room smaller ...
Great Job! Did you ever consider pre-painting the boards before you installed them then just touching up where needed?
I bet guessing, pencils, and box cutters have built A LOT of houses over the years. You're golden! 😘
Would priming and painting each board before nailing up be easier and/or prettier?
Not sure! Just a preference
Y’all are sooo dang cute! Y’all inspired me to shiplap .... thank you & keep your sweet videos coming ♥️
If you would have used underlayment plywood you would have had a easier time. It doesn't have knots in it and one side is super smooth and actually pretty wood.
I would recommend a higher grade paint next time so you don't need so many coats. SW is great paint but you probably bought an entry level paint. It turned out great though.
Good job. Tip for those looking@this: pre paint your boards - let dry then put then up no paint in the cracks or need to tape off anything -
Great job!!! Gorgeous living room now ❣️🙌🏼
Thank you!!❤️
Best video i have seen so far ! It looks amazing! My husband did my bathroom wall but it was kind of expensive with actual shiplap planks!
Your boards don’t seem to have the lapped edge. When u use a lapped edge you won’t actually see the wall underneath, so then you don’t have the wall painted.
9th and Vine has peel and stick shiplap, that's about as much work I like, but tysm for this tutorial
Love it. You two did a fantastic job.
You have to find the right worker on the right day to get them to cut now. I have them cutting to 2’ and cutting to 6” on my table saw.
