Cleaning Sage / Breville Bambino Plus

- Опубликовано: 17 окт 2024
- IMPORTANT - I messed up ;-), and figured something out, please read the description below for more info.
Due to popular demand, I've created this guide to descaling, cleaning & backflushing with the Sage or Breville Bambino Plus espresso machine.
A quick note first about a mistake I made while backflushing. Loads of other people have noted in forum threads etc., that they can't get the backflushing to work properly, the cleaning tablet doesn't dissolve, etc.,
When I was doing this, I couldn't see the lights around the buttons due to the studio lighting reflecting off the machine, but I could see on the video that it didn't appear that I was actually in the backflushing cycle here. So I doubled back & did it again, and I've figured something out.
1: I'm an idiot.
2: If the machine isn't blinking the 1 and 2 cup shot buttons intermittently to prompt you to backflush, all you're going to do when you follow the instructions, is to re-program the single shot button to the max length.
Meaning, that if you press the one and two cup shot buttons for five seconds as per the instructions, or however long you want, and then press the single shot button, you're now into re-programming the single shot button, and you'll just basically do one backflush for about 60 seconds.
So - if you want to do a backflush without the machine automatically going into the backflush cycle after 200 shots or whatever it actually is - just do a manual backflush.
To do this, whack your cleaning tablet in, and then pull a shot four or five times, basically until your tablet has more or less fully dissolved and is now sitting as soapy bubbles in the drip tray. Just remove the portafilter and have a look after four shots, if the tablet has gone, start rinsing, if not give it another shot.
Then empty the drip tray, and pull a couple more shots until the water going into the drip tray is now clean, and you're done.
That's just the backflushing, I didn't mess up the rest ;-), so you can watch the video for descaling and cleaning the steam wand tip, etc.
Please ignore the fact that I've put a bowl under the group when backflushing, I was mindlessly following the instructions when I did this ;-), but it seems the instructions are currently out of date - at the time they were created, the machine shipped with a cleaning disk with a hole in, so water would come out of the portafilter. Now, though, the Bambino Plus has a blind backflushing disk, so the water doesn't come through the portafilter, it goes directly into the drip tray, so you don't need a jug or bowl when backflushing. You do need a large container when doing the descaling though.
Also, the thinner needle bit on the steam tip cleaner is intended for cleaning the holes in the basket.

Don't know if others have mentioned - but it IS possible to force a backflush outside of the 200-shot cycle. Press and Hold 2-Cup and Steam buttons for 5 seconds when the machine is in standby - then go from there :)
I'm going to try this. Bravo says to hold the one cup and 2 cup for 5 seconds and it doesn't do anything different than holding the one cup into cup for 2 seconds which enters the shot timer modification mode. Very frustrating hahaha.
Thank you for your clear instructions, Breville should hire you...
Haha, thanks :-)
You are my hero. I cleaned mine yesterday, but when no water came out of the portafilter during the process, I figured something was wrong. That brought me to your video and the correct instructions. Thank you so much. As someone else mentioned, Breville should hire you! Love this machine, by the way. Have had it for just over a year, along with the breville dose control pro. I debated between that set and the barista express. Very happy with my decision. And your videos are very helpful. Cheers from Canada!
Same here
yes and me too. was freakin out.
I've had this machine for close to three years. Everytime I go to clean it and follow the instructions I am beyond confused. This video is clear and concise. Thank you!!
Thanks!! :-), happy to help.
What to do without your videos 😍 So much easier to undestand watching you than reading the manual 🤩
Thanks Ann,
Glad you are finding my videos helpful :-)
Cheers
Kev
I was planning on getting this machine and I’m a barista at sbux , this is exactly how we clean our mastrenas at closing. Wow great video.
Glad my video helped :-)
So glad I found your video. I was doing it wrong the entire time. I read the directions and watched the video and none of them explained it the way you did. Thank you, thank you!
Glad you found my video helpful Keith.
Thank you for your video! I watched a few of these and was confused because my machine wasn't doing what the video showed. You are the first that really explained the steps and the differences to the Breville instructions. Cheers
Hi Sharon,
Glad you found my video helpful :-)
Cheers
Kev
Yes!! Finally a video that actually helped me 😄 I was thinking I ruined the machine because no water was coming out😅
Glad to be of assistance 👍😎
Thank you for putting together this comprehensive video - I have struggled to find decent videos in the past! 😁
Thanks for the kind words 👍
Thanks for this, you're a legend. The sage instruction manual is ridiculous, video's like yours are the future. Keep up the good work
Come back to this video every time I need to do the cycles. Thankyou 😊
Me too!
Thank you for your video you saved my sanity. The instructors in the leaflet are not very clear. I found your video very clear and informative. I have a Bambino Plus coffee machine. Thank very much. Cheers.
Hi Maria,
I'm so glad that I was able to help you :-)

Thanks for the vid. I learned enough to go ahead with cleaning/descaling my Bambino. If you re-do this vid, it would be nice to have you off to the side while pressing buttons coz your body obscures what you're doing. OTOH, your narration is great!
phew! what a relief. i was certain that i flooded my machine when i noticed that the bowl didn't have much water in it but that the drip tray was full. your explanation is wonderful. thank you!
Glad you found my video helpful Michelle :-)
Important note, Dec 2022, re Backflushing. Someone has contacted me to tell me their Barista express has come with a disk with a hole... They thought they'd been sent old stock, however, I've spoken with Sage, and some models are now shipping with a disk with a hole in, which is something to do with a slightly different firmware version which can detect prolonged higher pressure. So if you do get any machine with a disk with a hole, this is why, and you'll just need to put a bowl under the portafilter if this is the case.
By the way...If you're in the UK, and you're thinking of buying a Sage machine (any Sage machine, not only their coffee machines), join my mailing list at coffeeblog.co.uk and then drop me an email to see if I have a current discount code to share. I don't currently get Breville discounts, sorry, but I do sometimes have Sage Appliances UK discount codes to share.

Thank you so much! It was really helpful to me. I got some problems of cleaning this machine, but I couldn't find the answers before I see this video. Good day!
By far the best instructions for caring for the Breville Bambino + . The instruction manual leaves so much out. (e.g. that there is a fine needle on the tool and that you would use the 1 cup basket when backflushing and soaking the basket and portafilter) At some point it would be great if you would redo do the video to include the lessons learned (e.g. waiting for the backflush signal before backflushing, not needing a bowl for backflushing .
Great video, thanks so much! Quick question from the U. S. The powder you used to clean the baskets, filters etc. is it the same as baking soda?
For descaling process, i learnt from one youtuber where he placed the machine next to the basin so that water will drain off directly on the basin without the dip tray. I found this way is very convenient.
A great tip, Thanks :-)
Months of struggling to understand the instructions.. you are a legend!
Haha, thanks :-)
Thanks super useful ... the flashing lights freaked me out I just wanted my morning coffee without any stress!!!
Thank you, Sage should employ you to do future videos for them, helped me a great deal to get my machine working optimally.
While you can backflush this way it is not running the actual cleaning cycle, this only activates after 200 shots and is indicated by the single and double shot lights flashing alternately (also while the cleaning cycle is running). In this case, the cycle runs several times in order to properly dissolve and flush through the tablet - what you actually just did was a single shot quantity set.
Tip for de-scaling - don't waste money on sachets of descaler, just buy citric acid powder in bulk (which is what the sachets contain) and use 25g per cycle, WAY cheaper and the product also has many other uses...
Why is your comment not higher???? Mine had the one shot and two shot lights blinking constantly and it kept running a cleaning cycle over and over again. Thought my machine was stuffed. Eventually went back to standby and we're all good. Also, I can't get it to start the cleaning cycle from off, I need to turn the machine on, get the blinking one shot two shot lights then press them both for 5 seconds to go into cleaning mode for it to start.
Thank you for this comment. I had to do the same. Turn on by pressing and holding the 1 cup 2 cup for 5 seconds then press either 1 cup for the lights to flash and then again press and hold 1 cup and 2 cup buttons for the machine to enter the cleaning cycle
Thank you so much for this video, it’s so easy to follow unlike the others I’ve found
Glad it helped :-) Cheers.
When I insert the filter in water tank, water doesn't comes and machine stopes. when I remove filter, water comes and coffee makes ready. what is the useful of water filter here? Then, for two cups of coffee, water comes very little like half an small cup. Why? Then, after I've got my coffee, when is safe to open used coffee place to clean it? immediately? or I have to wait until steam inside the machine decreases? Thanks.
Cheers for this my. Lights just came on for the first time, well. Over 200shots and a whole year of use. My last coffee machine needed descaling once a month so I've go into the habit of pulling blank shots after everyday of use which has probably helped lengthen the time between descale.
No worries :-). Sounds like you're taking good care of your machine. Cheers.
Your video guide to cleaning the Bambino Plus is clear and helpful. You fill in huge gaps left out of the manual, for example that no water will come out of the portafilter and which basket to use.
When I cleaned my machine, I found water had escaped from under the machine and was on the counter. The drip tray was not full. What did I do wrong?
Thanks for the kind words. Hmm. Do you get water on the counter from normal use? If this happens again I'd get in touch with support. Cheers, Kev.
This happened to me too…. Which led me to find this video to see if I did something wrong
Excellent video. I was puzzled when I did the descaling and no water came out the group head. So, your video really helped. I really enjoy the little machine which is my first. I’m finally starting to get a little latte art , also! I use it every morning. Just got the signal to descale after about 200 shots and that’s exactly what the book says. Thanks!
Thanks :-), glad it helped. Cheers :-)
Great video, I love this machine but I found the backlashing instructions very confusing, now thanks to you it's clear! One observation however is that after backflushing soap was still coming through the basket with the water so its a good idea to do a couple of one cup operations with an empty basket so that all the soap is flushed out of the machine
HI James,
Thanks for your info,and tips.
Cheers
Kev
I’ve had my machine since before Christmas. I’m watching your video has made it so much easier.. Would you say you have to use the D scaler and the other cleaning products or can you use cheaper products out there? Thanks so much.
So I went on a coffee fast for 30 days and have gone to use my machine again realising I didn’t remove the basket 🤦🏼♀️😭😭😭 I left the old grinds in the basket and attached to the machine. I know coffee making sin. 😳🤯😭😭😭 I’ve taken it off today, it has green mold on grinds, the mesh basket tiny holes and also on the top of where the the machine where the basket sits in the circle. I’ve of course pulled apart the basket, the wall and even unscrewed the shower piece but I’m so concerned about mold in the tiny holes. What’s your advise on cleaning this moldy situation???? Thank you so much. Really kicking myself here.
Oops! I've done this myself (not been on a coffee fast but when not using my own machine for a while when reviewing another one). It's not a huge deal. I'd take off the shower screen and put this and the basket in very hot soapy water for a while to loosen it all off, then get some puly caff, dissolve some of that in not water and leave them to soak in that for a while. Maybe portafiter too but only the metal part, try not to submerge the handle. If it makes you feel better you could also put them to soak in a sterilising solution too. Will be good as new.
Thank you so much, the book is rubbish at giving a detailed description of how to clean. My tablet didn’t totally disappear so I set the cleaning program to run a second time. Not sure if this was the correct thing to do. Again thank you. I did need my bowl underneath as water shot out of the cleaning wand. And I found the pin underneath, I’ve been using a needle. Hurrah to you
The "2L container under the portafilter/steam wand" part had me scratching my head too (did the cycle per the manual, then checked the video to see if I missed anything), thanks for the clarification. Also, pretty sure it went to backflushing mode after 200 shots, I had bought it 3 months earlier and I usually pull 2 or sometimes 3 shots per day, so that adds up. I don't expect to see the de-scaling prompt for a while since I use filtered water.
Hey. Great video.
Should the tablet completely dissolved in the back wash. There was quite alot left in the blanking disk after I did mine?
Great video - thanks. What descaling liquid/powder should be used? Also what powder should be used to soak the frother tip?
Thanks for covering the indicator lights with your hands so we can see everything.
Thanks for this! I do have a question. I just bought this machine, and when I try a backflush cycle there is always some water that leaks from back of the tray. I’ve exchanged two machines because of this and the third still does this. Have you noticed this happen to yours as well?
Hey ! Thanks for the video super helpful. I have the Bambino (not the plus) and the excess water didn’t go into the drip tray? Any tips? Thanks
Really helpful thank you. I was baffled by the guidance in the manual and this makes much more sense to me. I hope Sage are recognising how much you are helping people who have purchased their machines. Do you have tips for cleaning the Smart Pro Grinder please?
Thanks Caroline 👍😀. Re cleaning the grinder, I've not done a video of this yet but I will do. Regular cleans, I'd just take off the hopper and top burr, tip it up, give the inner burrs a brush, brush any grinds from the chute, give the top burrs a good brush before putting back in. If you want to go a bit further, get a vacuum hose in there, down on top of the inner burrs, and then also into the grinds chute. Also you can run some puly grind through: coffeeblog.co.uk/puly-grind-review. Or you can just use uncooked rice, apparently achieves a similar aim. Cheers
ukcoffeeblog brilliant, think I probably need to give it some attention very soon as I haven’t done much but give it a little brush so far. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply 😊
@@CH-wo8mx I have to admit, I completely neglected the smart grinder pro for at least the first couple of years ;-), I don't think I cleaned it once - and it's still fine after over 4 years of use, so I wouldn't worry too much. I do think it depends on the kind of beans you use though, if you're using darker roasted oily beans, then it's probably more important to regularly clean. Cheers, Kev.
Does this apply to a regular Bambino (not the plus)? I can't find the silicone thing anywhere, if it even comes with the Bambino...
Thank you!!! I assumed I hadn't been given the steam wand cleaning tool until this video, now I've found it you've saved me buying a new one hahaha
Glad you found my video helpful Heather :-)
Is it normal to have a puddle of water underneath the tray every single time the solenoid valve is in use (pressurised baskets)? Or huge puddle after performing cleaning cycle/backflush? Had it on the new machine I bought a month ago, and the replacement as well, hence concerned. First Sage said it shouldn't be doing that, then after reporting the same problem with 2nd machine, they said it's normal, and they shouldn't have replaced it in the first place... I need your feedback, please! Thank you in advance!
Thanks for this particular guide - sorted me out. I would say many Bambino Plus owners will find this helpful.
#sageappliances manual absolute rubbish as well as their customer support, but I love their Bambino Plus from day one.
Purchased mine in JAN 2020, had case opened with them in JUNE for descaling and cleaning cycle warning - at first they got back and suggested what to do - but after I tried and issue was still in place there was no reply to my emails...
Thanks Andrey :-). You still having issues or you've sorted it?
ukcoffeeblog thanks, all sorted thanks to your video.
@@andrym2004 good stuff 👍👍
@@Coffee_Kev Thanks to your video I got it sorted, but not for long - 5 days ago got lights flashing again. Tried to run full cleaning cycle, changed filter, tried without filter - no joy. Any advice?
As I said earlier - SAGE not very helpful. Coffee machine only 6-7 month old or less...
Thanks for the clear instructions! I have two questions. I’ve had this machine for two months now, and love it. But how often should I do this whole process? And could I use baking soda for soaking the wand tip and other elements or does it need to be a specific product? Thanks!
Hi Marina. I'd only do it with a cleaning tablet when prompted, but you can also do water only backflushing more regularly if you like: ruclips.net/video/jfsZ_jL-wYk/видео.html
I usually use Puly caff for soaking the wand tip etc., but any kind of cleaning solution should be fine. Cheers, Kev.
@@Coffee_Kev thanks. I always do a blank shot after each cup of coffee I make to clean off residue coffee anyway, so then I’ll just wait for the prompt and use a tablet then. I don’t have cleaning solution like the one you mentioned. That’s why I thought baking soda might work. But might do a better search for other cleaning solution.
Hi thanks for the video I have done it exactly as you have said
It does the porta filter flush but doesn't continue on to the steam wonder side and it still has about a 1/4 of the solution in the tank
Thanks. I’ve always followed the instructions even though how it actually works is completely different so good to see I’m not crazy. Agree Brevilles / sage need to release the current cleaning method in some updated guidance
No worries 👍😀
Thanks for well described instructions, much easier to understand now!
Thanks Geoffrey :-)
Sage has to pay YOU kind guy! Thanks a lot for your sooo appreciated HELP!
Thanks for this. The fact that it is even needed is massive fail by the manufacturer and their customer service. I have spent about 2 days and 10 litres of water cocking about with mine trying to understand why it won't leave descale mode! The manual contains so errors and omissions. It is so easy to update on line versions these days, so why don't they do it?
Hi, first of all thank you for the clear instructions! I have a question, according to the manual you have to do the cleaning cycle after 200 extractions. Apparently, the bambino will tell you to do the cleaning cycle. Should I listen to the machine or clean it more often. I won't be pulling 200 shots a month.
Hi Wilmar. Yeah it only puts itself into the backflush cycle after 200 shots, which is a lot of shots per clean. Personally I recommend regular manual backflushing (just pulling five or 6 short, 10 second shots with the backflush disk in) without a cleaning tablet, so just a water only backflush. I'd recommend daily, or every couple of days - water only. The fact that the manufacturer has set it to 200 shots would suggest that they think backflushing with detergent will cause wear, so I'd recommend backflushing with cleaning disk/powder just when prompted every 200 shots, but do regular water only backflushing. Cheers.
@@Coffee_Kev Thank you for the clear advice, I will definitely use it! Keep the bambino content coming, really enjoying it.
@@Coffee_Kev That's a good point, but unfortunately, pulling an extra 6 shots every day or 2 will artificially add to the 200 shot counter. I reckon I'll do what you say but when it prompts for a backflush cycle, I'll do it without a cleaning solution except for when it's been 3 months since the last backflush with cleaner (I make 200 cups over 3 months).
@@Coffee_Kev As far as I can tell you are not entering the real cleaning/backflush cycle when you just push the 1&2 cup button when the lights aren't flashing alternately, but you are entering the programming mode instead. When the machine is really in cleaning/backflush cycle it doesn't heat the water or not as much (absence of steam) and it does multiple flushes, with pauses in between. When you do it the way you suggest it tries to pull/program a single shot and gives a lot of steam/gargling noise. Is it really safe to do it this way?
Such helpful videos, thank you! Can you tell me please if a water filter is necessary? I live in Scotland, very soft water and haven’t needed filter with previous machines at all! Also if I do need a filter, how often does it need to be changed? Many thanks.
Hi Rosemary, personally I'd say probably not if you live in a very soft water area. You'll still want to descale, although you shouldn't have to do this often. Cheers, Kev
@@Coffee_Kev thank you
Thanks for the informative video. Got to ask, maybe there is a video in it, how did you break your arm?
Thanks Ashley. I wondered when someone would ask about my battle scar, haha! ;-). Skimboarding, at Saunton Sands in Devon. Slipped backwards, board went from under me, landed with the full force on my left arm, in about an inch of water, on compacted sand.
Broke in three places, took quite a bit of metal work to put it back together!
Ta
Kev
Hey Kev! Have you ever experienced the machine not running this cycle properly? I've just tried to run this cycle on my machine 8 times. I'm now out of tablets and the 1cup and 2 cup buttons keep flashing. The machine is kinda out of control 🤯
Me too!!!
Also me! My machine always was ready to go in 3 seconds but after first backwash it’s now flashing several times before ready to go?
Just wondering how it matters whether you use the single or double shot basket for the back flush with the rubber disk inserted?
I mean the portafilter is blocked either way, so what difference does it make?
Hi Jesper, I agree I don't think it matters at all. Somewhere (I think on a Sage or Breville video) they said it should be the dual walled single basket, but I can't see why what type of basket or which size of basket would matter. Ta, Kev
Hi, great vid, very clear. Can I just what type of cleaning product you used to soak the filter basket & steam wand tip?
Cheers :-). I use Puly Caff. Best price I can find for it at the minute is Clumsy Goat: clumsygoat.co.uk/products/puly-caff-machine-cleaner-900g-1
Thank you! I had the same confusion and your video cleared it all up for me.
Thanks Bob 😀👍
Thank you so much Kev. I always refer to your cleaning video. 😊
Glad you find them helpful Rachel :-)
I love your videos , but I couldn’t get my machines 2 lights to blink right at the beginning before backflush ! Any ideas what went wrong please ?
Hi Liz, you can only do this when the machine prompts you to do a backflush, for a manual backflush see: ruclips.net/video/jfsZ_jL-wYk/видео.html
Hi, great video. What do you do when the machine is clean and working fine, but no water/coffee comes through the basket? It seems like the basket itself is blocked. How do you clean it?
Thanks
Hi, Have you replaced your filter, this could be the problem, if you remove the filter does the machine work?
If it does, soak the filter for a few hours or over night, then try it back in your machine.
Hopefully this will work.
Cheers
Kev
Yeah, take the basket off or put on unused single basket then no problem at all
Hi, I am to struggling to descale my bambino plus. There is no water flowing through the machine during the descaling cycle and the cycle is taking far longer than usual. I end up having to just manually end the cycle as the machine gradually becomes noisier. Any tips to resolve this?
Thanks for the very clear video. Just one question: if I do a manual backflush, will that prevent the machine from requesting one after 200 shots? My issue is that it ALWAYS does this between making the coffee and frothing the milk, and the override doesn't work. I was hoping I could circumvent it by doing a manual clean.
It did that to me as well. I just did the cycle and ditched the shot I had pulled, and then started again once the cleaning cycle was done.
Thanks a lot for the video while helping much. Therefore any idea how to skip on the cleaning process? Thank you
You said take your water filter out, where is it? I saw some little filter came with the machine but I did not know how install it, Thanks
Also please if I want skip the cleaning cycle and do it later, is any option can do that? I remember watched a video saying that but I don’t remember which one. Thanks
I really appreciate you showing how to use the wand cleaning tool. Have never seen it done before. I think I have decided to buy the Babino Pro. I am a colplete novice.
Hi Fay, you're very welcome :-)
This video is wonderful and answers alot of questions I have about the cleaning process! Thanks so much for posting!
I have a question I hope someone can help with. I was washing my water tank the other day and at the bottom there is a mechanism with a spring in it that you can push in and out. I did not think this was removable, and normally when I am washing with soap and water I will push in and out a few times to clean it. However, this time it completely popped out. After draining the water, I was left with a spring and a little plastic piece. I am pretty sure that there is supposed to be a little rubber gasket maybe. I think it went down the drain. Now I cannot get this plug to go back into the bottom of the water tank so I can use it.
I have put in a ticket to Breville but never received a response. I would prefer to purchase the little rubber piece, assuming there is one and I didn't just break the water filter, but I don't know what the description would be to order online, or if you can order this online or not. I would prefer not to have to purchase a new water tank, but I will if needed.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is this supposed to be removed? Thanks in advance!
Thanks Ryan 😀. Re the missing piece, you'll need to get hold of Breville support - what I'd do is take a photo of the piece in question (the mechanism I mean) and tweet this at the Twitter account of Breville for your country, so @BrevilleUSA if you're in the states - mention that you have had no reply from support, and if they dont come back to you I'd keep tweeting them. I dont know why they're not responding to your ticket but I think you'll get a response this way. Cheers
Thanks i really enjoyed that. One question though if you have a machine that shipped with a blanking disc with the hole in it, can you safely swap if for the proper blank one? Thanks
Ni Neil, thanks :-). Yeah there's no difference in the machine, you'll be fine using a proper blanking disk. Cheers.
@@Coffee_Kev many thanks..
Thank you for the very helpful video! It answered a number of questions I had. What brands/products do you recommend for the back flush detergent, descaling, and soaking?
No problem :-). For backflusing I'd use Puly Cafe, so much cheaper than buying the tablets. For descaling personally I'd use the Sage / Breville descale liquid. I'd usualy recommend whatever the manufacturer recommends when it comes to descaling, and you don't have to do it all that often unless of course you're in a particularly hard water area - but for backflushing, it's something you should do fairly regularly, the tablets are really expensive, and I can't see any major difference between them and the puly powder when I've looked at the active ingredients.
Cheers
Kev
Thank you. I did the cleaning cycle but every time I turn the machine on again it flashes that it needs cleaning. I can press the steam button to clear it. But then when I press for the auto one or two shots of coffee it runs for ages. The machine has been brilliant and is only a few weeks old. Any ideas before I return it? Bought from Currys thanks
I followed your instructions for cleaning set up, but my machine keeps flashing back and forth betwn the 1 and 2 cup buttons but doesn't start cleaning. What am I doing wrong? Thank you for your content as the manual is pretty rough.
Hi Kev, great video thanks. When I have done the cleaning there was a large part of the cleaning tablet left in the portafilter. Is this normal?
I just wanted to say I realised after this comment that the cleaning isn’t done when the machine releases the pressure the first time. You have to let it keep going for a while and it will kick back into life and cycles a few more times.
@@keithweiland Looks like you've solved the problem, but the machine will go into 'ready' mode when the cleaning process is complete (all 3 buttons plus steaming temp and foam lights steadily lit).
How do you feel about the slightly larger models from Sage? The ones next up e.g. Sage Espresso. Worth the extra money?
Hi Herr, I've tried the Barista espress, and I think this and the Barista Pro are great machines, but I'm not a big fan of integrated grinder machines to be perfectly honest, I just don't think you're ever going to get the best of both worlds with integrated grinder machines. The Sage dual boiler is no doubt a very good machine, my only issue with it is that at this price point there's quite a bit of competition. Cheers, Kev.
Do you know if there is a way to override the cleaning cycle? I was in the middle of making my morning coffee when it came on, quite annoying as I just wanted to chill with my latte, not clean the machine.
yeah just press the steam button to ignore the cycle, it'll prompt you again the next time you turn it on. Cheers
Hi from California! What cleaning solution did you use for soaking for 15 minutes?
Hi :-). Can you send some California sunshine over to the North West of England please? Thanks :-). I used Puly Caff.
Thanks it helped me with the cleaning cycle of my Sage Bambino Plus. Cheers
Glad it helped :-)
Thanks for this. Does the tablet completely disintegrate? I ask because mine did not.
Yeah it's very normal for not 100% of the tablet to disintegrate.
Cheers
Kev
Thanks for doing this, really helpful. What tablets do you recommend?
Hi Fergal. The machine comes with 2 tablets, you can buy these branded sage (in Europe) or Breville tablets directly from them, or use a powder such as puly caff, you can use puly caff for descaling too if you dont want to buy the branded descaling sachets. Cheers
Thanks for the video. Much better than the guide or sage video.
Thanks Evan :-)
Hey I followed the instructions for the cleaning and it doesn't seem to be working, I think my machine maybe broken? When I try to put a normal coffee cycle on no water was coming through the coffee holder, is that the way if being able to contact you or send you a video to see if it's worked or not? Although the descaling worked fine though, bit concernef about my machine, thanks!
Hi Karla, sure send me a vid - kev@coffeeblog.co.uk
You’re a life saver 🛟!!! I really thought that my bambino plus cleaning cycle didn’t work… phew. Thanks so much 🥰
Glad my post helped you Claudia :-)
When I try to get it to enter the descale mode by pushing the one shot and steam wand buttons at the same time for at least 5 seconds, it won't enter descale mode (the one shot and steam wand buttons do not go to solid lights). Instead, it just enters normal function mode (begins with flashing lights then all lights on solid). Is there another way I can get it to enter descale mode? I've tried unplugging and plugging it back in to reset, but no change.
Hi, I use 1.2g tablet instead of 2g, after the back flushing is done, I noticed that the tablet was only dissolved about 80-90%. Is this normal?
Hi Callum, yeah I I wouldnt worry about it if theres a little bit left over. If you like you can do some short manual shots with the blanking disk to fully dissolve the tablet after the cycle completes, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.
ukcoffeeblog Thank you sir !
You are definitely DIY Perks brother
Thnx for this, I literally wasted two tablets because there wasn't any water coming out and so I thought I was doing something wrong
I live in Scotland and we dont have any issues with limescale buildup on appliances. Should I still use the water filter in the tank and carry out the descaling process?
If your water is soft, you don't get limescale with other appliances, and you're happy with the taste and the quality of the water, my personal opinion on that is there's no need for either. Some would say you may still be better off doing one or two descales per year to be on the safe side, and I can see the point, but I'm also in an area with fairly soft water, I've never bothered with descaling as we just don't get scale on other appliances so it's not something I really worry about. Ta, Kev.
so manual cleaning cycle mode is technically just running through the blind shot manually? and then rinse the machinr manually as well?
Yup just a handful of short shots with the blind disk in place, water only. Cheers, Kev.
Your video is great but I can not remove the tip of my steam wand to clean. I’ve even managed to break the tool to help twist off the tip! Any suggestions, I would appreciate it.
Thanks Linda. Really? Hmm, I can remove mine just with my thumb and forefinger, don't even need the tool. Are you turning it the right way? You need to turn it towards the right, clockwise. Cheers
@@Coffee_Kev Thanks, I am turning the correct way! I have descaled once before without any problem! I’ll contact sage!
I have the non-plus version, and I didn't get a blanking disc or cleaning tablets? Should I have done? I've still got all the packaging, so I just rechecked, there's nothing in there.
Hi Peter, no - there's no solenoid in the non-plus version, so no backflushing. There's a brew valve instead of a 3 way solenoid. The good thing about this is that the drip tray doesn't fill as quickly as it does on the plus. Cheers, Kev.
Had no idea that the little tool for the steam was under the water tank - have had it for over six months and been trying to fit toothpics etc..! HAHA
Thanks a bunch
Hi Joe,
Haha ;-) no worries.

Hi Kev, Is it possible to make the required foam for coffee art using skimmed milk? I have been try without success, works ok with semi skimmed , only asking because that is the milk we use.
Hi Andy,
Its really hard to make latte art using skimmed milk, It tends to foam up and separate, Have you tried with a milk alternative?
Cheers
Kev
@@Coffee_Kev yes, can just about get some shape or other but not perfect yet, only had the machine a couple of weeks.
Awesome, thanks. Machine is back to its best.
Good stuff :-).
Thanks for your video.
I have one issue with my cycle, after 6 rounds of cleaning, the single cub and steam lights are keep flashing none stop. I have tried to press single cub button but nothing happen.
I turned off the machine and wait for it to cool down. Then turned it back, that 2 buttons is continuo flashing.
How can i come back to all 3 button on as normal please
Hi Winnie. If it's the shot buttons & steam buttons flashing that's the machine asking you to do a descale cycle - not a cleaning (backflush) cycle. If you've back flushed, you'll now need to run a descale cycle to clear that. Cheers.
Absolutely loving your videos! As well as Bambino Plus! Something doesn't work the same way on my machine though... I have the one with the cleaning disc with a hole in it - and I can't put it in a cleaning cycle manually - I have to wait for the 1cup/2cup flashing to go through cleaning cycle, and it will need a container under the portafilter (quite a lot of water coming out because of the hole in the cleaning disc). Does this mean the older (I'm guessing my machine is older) machines don't do backflushing at all? If I try to put it in cleaning cycle manually by holding 1cup/2cups for 5 seconds it will go into programming shot volume mode, nothing else... And if the machine is off it will also reset it to factory espresso volume as far as I know... Not sure if I'm doing something wrong here? Also - smaller needle can be used to clean holes in pressurised portafilters:-)
Thanks :-). Yes I think they started out with the disk with the hole, and at some point changed it to a blind disk.
Actually, I made a mistake in this video, and I'm not going into the cleaning cycle either! I couldn't see the lights around the buttons due to the studio lights reflecting from the machine, but you can see it better from the angle of the camera than the position I was looking from, and it doesn't look like I've actually taken it into the backflush cycle, which makes sense as I'd expect it to have lasted longer.
So I tested it, and it appears that you can't actually get it into the auto back flush cycle until it wants to take you into it, at the 200 shot mark or whatever. What I was doing (and I suspect what some others have done too) is that I've ended up simply pre programming the single shot button for the max length, this is what happens if you follow the instructions but not at the point that the machine is prompting you to it.
But we're just backflushing here, so we don't need the machine to do it for us, it's really simple. To backflush manually, just put a cleaning tablet (or cleaning powder) into the blind basket and pull some shots until the powder or tablet has gone through.
I've done an update video on this: ruclips.net/video/jRMPWagKEcg/видео.html
You could contact Sage/Breville to ask them for a blind disk, but otherwise you just need to blank off the hole somehow.
Cheers
@@Coffee_Kev Awesome! Will give it a go, thank you!
Hi mate thanks for the video, once I’ve got to the end of the descaling process, my bambino seems to get stuck, just the one shot and two shot lights are flashing and I can’t seem to get out of it? Any ideas?!
If they are flashing alternately, it means it needs to run a cleaning cycle which is distinctively different from the de-scaling cycle.
You only held for a couple seconds so you just reset the shot button, you didn't enter a cleaning mode. You have to hold it for 5 seconds supposedly and then it supposed to flash while it's functioning just like when it initiates it on its own and forces you to do a backflush. No matter how long I hold the button so it never seems to enter the backflush cleaning cycle.
You basically just pulled one really long shot but it couldn't relieve the pressure so I'm assuming it didn't initiate a second shot and you still had a bunch of that tablet in the portafilter and had to manually keep turning on a shot until it cleaned?
Yeah, there's a note in the description about that. This is an old video, in this one I thought you could make the machine go into backflush mode, it's not that I didn't press it for long enough, it's that you can't get it into backflush mode when not prompted to do so. To use the machine-led backflushing you have to do it when prompted. Cheers.
@Coffee_Kev dang that's how I ended up back here LOL this is one of the First videos I watched that led me to you well I wish shopping. I'm digging around and even Breville says you can get it into back flush manually. Thanks for clarifying that they killed that feature. I ended up initiating a descale cycle while trying different button configurations 🫣 even unplugging it didn't reset it so I had to go through the descale anyway 😅😮💨
Can you recommend how often to clean out the sage bambino plus? And also where to order the cleaning tabs if you run out? Thanks 🤓
Thanks for the video. Greatings from Germany 🇩🇪.
Thanks Marc :-)
Hi - great video. Both the milk temperature and milk foaming buttons are flashing on my sage bambino machine - what does this mean and how can I fix this? Thank you
Hi Niamh. Thanks :-). This means the Bambino thinks the wand is blocked. Try manually purging the wand, pull the wand out as if you're steaming manually, and press the steam button. If that doesn't clear it, get the wand tip cleaning tool out from under the water tank, unscrew the tip, and use the needle thing to unblock any holes if blocked. If this doesn't help and they keep flashing, I'd get in contact with Sage support. Cheers, Kev.
ukcoffeeblog thanks so much!!!
@@niamhmyers7153 no worries :-). Did it work? Cheers
