@Sunflowers Are Awesome I do my nan introduced me to the Carpenters sound I love Karen's voice but her mum never showed much love to her than she did Richard and Karen wanted to be a drummer and her brother and her mum bullied her to sing out front of everyone
what's terribly sad to me is that Karen's name has become almost synonomous with anorexia nervosa. When someone brings up her name, usually the first thing I hear is, didn;t she die of anorexia? well, yes, and that was tragic, but she deserves to be remembered for her talent as a drummer and her beautiful, smooth voice RIP Karen
Yes, but not a lot was known about anorexia nervosa , even the psychologist mentioned it when talking to the family. , even treatment was undecided before of how to treat a patient.
Oh wow. I remember seeing this on TV when I was 8. It made such a massive impression. I remember asking my mom "wait, but I don't understand. why was she sick? why did she die?" My mom choked up and answered "because she thought she wasn't pretty. because she listened to lies. so she stopped eating and she died from that. never believe it if anyone ever tells you that. you are so beautiful you should always live. no matter what anyone says." Thank you for posting this.
I remember making cookies in the kitchen when I heard over the radio that Karen Carpenter passed away on Feb. 1983 while getting dressed that morning...So sad. Her voice was gift from the angels..
Sam Sung Yes it was- remembered reading that Richard AND Agnes made them rewrite and/or completely remove scenes that were not favorable to them, and the director would have to comply or Richard would threaten to refuse the movie the rights to their music. The director said he was practically held hostage by Richard and Agnes, and he wanted to make the film focus on Karen's desperate need of love and attention from her mother Agnes, and that Richard was always favorited and Karen was ignored...Its even reported, the line at the end where she FINALLY tells Karen I love you was added for dramatic purposes..How sad
Lauren Greenlee Yes your right agnes never could tell her own daughter she loved her that line in the movie was a falsehood. Can you imagine how emotionally abusive that family was to have to make up something like that to hide the truth. Shameful.
Sam Sung. It is worthwhile noting that Richard did not get his way the entire time. The famous scene in Steven Levenkrons office where Agnes cannot tell Karen she loves her, was included by the producers over the objections of Richard.
I'm MOSTLY pissed they pick a completely inadequate drummer to play Karen! Karen was GOOD. Then Richard goes and finds an ACTUAL pianist to play himself! He knows better. The man's many things. But he's not stupid.
Karen...no one has a voice quite like yours. My favorite female voice. Especially when you hit those low notes. Goosebumps. You left us far too soon and are sorely missed. You rocked the hell out of those drums too. You made a great team with your brother with his songwriting, arranging and piano. But you were the true superstar. Rest in peace Karen.
I know Rich hates this film now, but I have to say, that as a Biopic for TV, it was well done, & Cynthia Gibb was simply awesome. Mitchell Anderson had a more difficult role--thankless actually, but Cynthia was gorgeous, & spot-on as Karen. I saw them 5 times in concert, & loved them more & more each time. It still breaks my heart today--what a loss. Wolfsky9, 65 y/o now.
The beginning of this movie has always been eerie to me. The way they take her into the hospital and the 13 year old Karen there...when she's dying. Just always eerie to me. Great movie though.
Holly, I agree I watched this movie several years ago and remember like it was yesterday!! Young Karen roller skating, and singing to her lifeless body. I think they used the actual ambulance and drivers that took Karen to the hospital! Glad to hear someone else thought it was eerie as well.
I seriously think Cynthia Gibb did an excellent job or portraying Karen Carpenter from teenager to 32 year old. Mitchell Anderson is also very good as Richard Carpenter. I did not see this movie when it first came out in the late 1980s. I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago on RUclips. It is hard to believe it was made so long ago. I did not know what to make of the beginning scene with some person skating in the halls of the hospital . I had to watch it a few times before I understood. I don't find it scary or eerie in the sense that it frightens me, but it is curious. I think it is a good scene in that it presents the element of a person's younger self talking to one's older self in the very last minutes of one's life. This movie, is a particularly well done bio-pic even though a lot of critics and others say that it has a sensationalist nature to it. Of course even though the real Richard Carpenter and the Carpenter family (reportedly ) have in one way or other contributed to information for the story of Karen Carpenter, there will foreseeably will always be things that we will never really know but on the other hand it seems that there is more than enough certainty that Karen was indeed a "Little Girl Blue" and that her parents showed favoritism toward Richard as far as believing that he was the serious musician in the family and yes, Karen did deal with an eating disorder and Richard dealt with drug addiction.
I remember when she died - how tragic! SO young - my family had all their LP's and like Karen, I share the birth state of CT - probably the best female vocalist of the 20th century.
I've always liked this movie. My mom was a big fan of the Carpenters back in the Day, and it's easy to see why. They were both incredibly talented, it's a real shame that Karen had that problem with anorexia.
If he even was a prodigy on piano, without Karen he never would have seen a fraction of the success she brought to the group. She was THEE talent - by far.
Better late than never: lots of people play piano. So? He WAS a great music arranger, though. He was their "sound." It's pretty specific. Notice their songs all have the same sound and the same mix. In fact. Proof, and I'm mad he didn't hire a REAL drummer for this movie, her disco album bombed. Or would have if Richard didn't make her shelve it. It sounded dated, even by standards of the day, and totally unmemorable. She didn't even play drums on it and I'd have paid to see that. Jmo

@tonyf734atl yes your right it was the same paramedic crew as well. In fact one of the EMT's said it was really surreal to do this over again as Gibb looked a lot the late Carpenter did that morning. It was difficult to relive the events of that day again as he was a fan of the Carpenter's music...
i just watched my son walk through a scene with the band on the field at Downey high in ca.where Karen went to school, where my son went when they filmed the movie, they got out of class for two days and all the pizza and coke they could eat.

Well, that's because Cynthia Gibb played both parts. Karen probably wasn't the same height at 13 she was as an adult. They also added fat padding to Cynthia's young costume, as you can see in her fanny in those pedal pushers she was wearing at the beginning of the movie

She died because after all that time that she didn't eat, she had a heart attack because her heart needed protein cells. She stayed alive by water and smoking because smoking fills up the stomach by the smoke.... Ima science nerd;)
She gained 30 pounds in 8 weeks while in the hospital on an intravenous drip which caused further stress to a heart already stressed by years of anorexia.
I don't think the actress was the right choice to play her, the voice just doesn't go at all with the face plus I don't think she was convincing. Otherwise , fairly good movie.
