T'Challa: "Vengeance has consumed you. It's consuming them. I'm done letting it consume me."
Shuri: "Vengeance has consumed us. We cannot let it consumes our people."
I love how subtle the movie shows the different between them. T'Challa was, as Killmonger said, a noble man who dropped his hatred and did the right thing, while Shuri never managed to drop her hatred towards Namor, she simply did what a leader should, which is not letting her people pay the price for her own emotions.
In many ways, Shuri was simultaneously more immature and mature than T'Challa

I never thought about how we’re conditioned as Marvel viewers to basically cheer for fighting, even if it’s a heartbreaking battle. You’re right, it was weird to have that disjointed tone between Shuri’s last fight and the one on the ship. It doesn’t jive with the rest of the film.

Things I loved about Shuri in this movie
1)She wasn’t written as a “strong female character”, she was written as a real person.
2)Unlike with other female leads, where the writers are too afraid to let them have actual emotion, she’s actually allowed to show emotion and have character flaws. She’s allowed to cry and grieve (I mean she looses her brother AND her mother for gods sake). It shows that, yes, it’s okay to cry and mourn, it doesn’t make you weak. Ironically, having emotion and not being afraid to cry actually makes you stronger than those who refuse to show emotion.
3)Shuri doesn’t get the black Panther powers until near the climax, and even then, unlike Captain Marvel, she doesn’t instantly become op. Sure she’s far more powerful, but she’s not invincible and does take hits during the climax (I mean for the love of god she gets stabbed through the abdomen). It shows that, while she’s still powerful, she’s still human
4)I love the fact that the writers weren’t afraid to make her seek revenge against Namor. Most Hollywood writers would be terrified of this idea for fear of the Twitter demons. Her wanting revenge doesn’t make her look bad, it makes her human.
5)I love the fact that even at the end, she’s still mourning for Tchalla. It’s like, yeah, she’s not suddenly magically cured of her depression and is all better by the end, these things take time to cope with.
Obviously this movie has its issues, but after the boatload of boring and pandering “strong female characters”, Shuri was a breath of fresh air.

we meet shuri in the first Black Panther as a funny young teenage girl. Then in this film she’s more mature and mourning the loss of her brother. She’s fighting against a side of her who wants to take her anger of not being able to help tchalla out on the world. Then when the Queen dies she lets that dark side take over and plans to take revenge. She goes through tchalla’s arc of not choosing vengeance. She ends the film more peaceful then was at the start and finally ends her mourning period and decides to move on from her brother’s death. She goes from irresponsible funny teenage girl to vengeful broken person/black panther to a peaceful but still broken person who has learned their lesson and is living with it. That’s an arc. Peter Parker has a super similar arc in no way home of not choosing vengeance.

This is honestly what I wanted in Phase 4, I don't know if it's Ryan Cooglers directing or the movie being a tribute to Chadwick, but it just felt so human. Phase 4 has been on this really goofy streak with it's films (unlike Eternals and Shang-Chi) that I walked into the theatre scared that it would be another MCU movie with a bunch of dumb MCU jokes, but I was so surprised with what I actually got. It's not a superhero movie, it's a movie about grief and loss and dealing with that and everyone's response to that. Queen Ramonda lost her husband and her son, when she felt like Okoye got Shuri killed, it only ampliefed how she was already feeling about her previous betrayel in the last movie.
Nakye couldn't stand to be at the funeral because she was scared to face the reality that the man she loved was gone.
Shuri goes through it the most, she couldn't create the heart shaped herb in time and T'Challa passed because by the time it was made, it was already to late. She knew that she was next in line to take the mantel of Black Panther but couldn't do it because she knew that she'd be taking the role of her brother, a role of she never felt like she could take and her mother dying only made it worse because not only did she end up having to be the new Black Panther, but she doesn''t have a family who can teach and help her.
And Namor, my God, I don't even need to say anything.
I really love this movie, yeah it stumbles a bit towards the end in it's third act, but it building up to the end with Shuri finally letting go and breaking down. MANNNNNNNNNNN (I cried, I really cried)

Wakanda Forever is a masterpiece in a true essence 🖤, because it's a perfect amalgamation of a Tribute to Chadwick Boseman, introducing a new civilization (Talokan from Aztec Civilization), introducing two new characters in a very astonishing way (Namor & Iron-Heart), Global Representation, recreates the same cultural phenomena of it's previous installment & most importantly being stand-out as a Superhero Flick, they'd perfectly provided a Tribute to Chandwick Boseman, also it's less MCU and more Marvellous because the Art-Direction, Cinematography, Visuals, VFX, CGI all are just perfect and there aren't too many unnecessary Jokes in every 10 Minutes, Yaah there're some jokes but those are actually funny it makes you laugh effortlessly, and whenever there's any serious scene then it supposed to take you in the darkest side.

Honestly Wakanda Forever was the best MCU phase 4 product, not just movies but shows too. So much heart and soul went into the film. Letitia Wright deserves best actress award in my opinion. The only other phase 4 product that I thought was great was No Way Home and even that had some of the typical MCU moments.

What I loved the most out of this movie that I hadn't seen a lot in the mcu was the worldbuilding and how they tied events to the real world. Making Namor's story tie in to the spanish invasion of america, the way all of this conflict happened because of other countries thirst for some vibranium (which parallels the behaviour of real world countries with other resources), and the political climate of Wakanda at the start as well. It made it feel like the movie was happening in the world, it's hard to explain, I think what I mean, is that the actions of the political entities in the movie didn't feel as "cartoony" as most marvel films.

This might be second best in Phase 4 for me. My favorite aspect is the duality between science and spiritual. it feel like Wakanda more than Blackpanther movie ( which is a smart title for me). Also, Mbaku is the new King for sure while Shuri is still Blackpanther. Bad aspect is the "war" fight scene. I think Ryan Coogler love Grounded fightscene too much since BP1, he make Shuri vs Namor really great but Talocan vs Wakanda is weak. I would like to see more Aerial Ship from Wakanda and how Talocan counter them. Add more Fleet in both side in the background would help hype up the scale of the battle.

It fumbled every time it stopped taking itself seriously, the intro was pretty solid but it didn't pick itself up until the apartment fight.

  • @UltimateCL
    @UltimateCL Год назад +9

    *SPOILERS*
This movie handles the topic of grief really well. Chadwick's passing was one of the most heartbreaking losses we've ever gotten. The man became a symbol. And Wakanda Forever honored him both as a person and a symbol, and that makes it both beautiful and bittersweet. And having dealt with so many losses in my family since 2017 (great-aunt, dad, uncle, and, this year, grandpa), couldn't help but to completely understand Shuri's anger, her desire to just burn it all down. The people we love, the ones who better understood us, are no longer here. F*ck everyone and everything. I mean, a lot of scenes regarding death and characters dealing with it were very hard to watch because of the emotional rawness. When Shuri lost Ramonda and saw her body, man... It was like seeing my biggest fear take shape, y'know. Being alone and full of anger. When I cried during that scene, it was both because of Shuri's suffering and that fear of mine. A lot of moments made me cry for both the fictional world and the real world. It was heavy to deal with, and necessary. I just wanted to give a hug to everyone involved in this movie, to be honest, especially Ryan Coogler. Without his sensibility, Wakanda Forever wouldn't have been as powerful and meaningful as it is.

    1. Shuri isn't just a "strong female" character, she's finding her way through tragedy to become a strong character who are happened to be female.
    2. K'uk'ulkan/ Namor isn't just a "race swap for diversity" or "man are bad" character, he has an interesting backstory that give him an "understandable" motivation to protect his people and kingdom with it's own unique culture and history.

6:08, strangely enough, Shang Chi also had a similar arc of putting aside vengeance and while he does it to reject being like his vengeful and selfish father and Peter does it to preserve his moral integrity (and his willingness to fully accept his role in Aunt May’s death in his attempts to have everything be the way he wanted), Shuri does it out of empathy, managing to see herself, her story and that of her people reflected in her enemies. In that respect, I do agree this arc was handled better in this movie than the other two, with the sequences showing the similarities between the two civilizations as a visual representation for empathy being a pretty great directorial touch, having the audience experience Shuri’s thought process and allowing us to connect more with her decision.
